Hugh Fitzgerald is a Los Angeles-based actor, writer, BJJ Black Belt, and fight trainer at the legendary 87 Eleven Action Design and 87 North. Nearly 20 years ago, a struggling New York-based theater actor, Hugh, had a chance meeting with David Mamet that would literally change his life. That meeting opened doors he never could have imagined and paved the way for a transformative career in the film industry. His foray into this world was Mamet's love story to BJJ and the Martial Arts—Redbelt—which ushered Hugh into a community of martial artists and filmmakers who would go on to become legends in the industry. We start this episode of Fights With Friends at the opening scene of Redbelt, which offers one of the earliest depictions of BJJ and grappling on the American screen. Sit back and get ready for a thoughtful, philosophical, and genuine discussion on martial arts, film, the struggles of working in the film business, and magic. We haven't reviewed very many MMA movies and we certainly haven't talked specifically about a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu film before, but writer/director David Mamet was the right guy to focus on that in Redbelt. He's a practitioner of Jiu-Jitsu, which also means he might not have always explained the sport as well as he could have. Maybe he was too close to it? While the first half is terrific, Redbelt is overstuffed with plot and has a vast & confusing conspiracy that unfolds during the inferior second half. Headlining a great cast, Chiwetel Ejiofor is wonderful as a man of honour in an honourless world. Does Mamet think that's what he is too? Anyway, we spent a lot of this episode trying to figure out the uneven film that is Redbelt, but there's much to praise too. Just play our podcast, there's always a way to play our podcast.
Qual é a motivação?
In the first of two episodes devoted to the films of David Mamet, Andras & Bryan celebrate what is currently Mamet's last theatrical release, a soulful martial arts conspiracy drama. Written & Directed by David Mamet. Starring Chiwetel Ejiofor, Emily Mortimer, Tim Allen, Joe Mantegna, Alice Braga, Max Martini, Jose Pablo Cantillo, Jake Johnson, Rebecca Pidgeon & Ricky Jay How is the world wrong about Redbelt? From Bryan: I saw this in the theater five times when it came out. I can't think of a leaner, tighter action/thriller. This movie isn't that old, so why doesn't anyone talk about it? It's a masterful film by a confident filmmaker at the true top of their game. It's time to recognize this movie as one of the best from this century so far. James Hrivnak joins Andrew and Dave in this episode to take a look at a martial arts drama from...David Mamet?! Yes, that's right: REDBELT, the 2008 film about MMA fighting, magicians, and hot watches is from the man who made "Coffee is for closers" common office speak. Does the film work? Will the trio agree on what flaws, if any, the film has? Just how many Mamet films will James quote before the episode is up? Tune in and find out! Next Episode: PARTY SIZE! All music by Andrew Kannegiesser. Editing by Dave Babbitt. Apologies to all magicians.
Excellent chat with Max Martini about his career and his continued advocacy for veterans; including his recently released project, Sgt. Will Gardner. Sgt. Will Gardner follows a troubled Iraq War veteran struggling to reintegrate into society sets out on a cross-country journey with the hope of reuniting with his young son. The cast is stellar, from Gary Sinise to Robert Patrick to Max himself. Check it out on Amazon today! We hit on a ton of topics from Max's USO tour that inspired Sgt. Will Gardner, his role in Saving Private Ryan, to how he auditioned for David Mamet for his role in Redbelt (cult classic ju jitsu movie, check it out!). Max comes from a long line of LEO's and military members, including his mom that was in law enforcement. Max also supports several charities, including Warriors Heart, the Gary Sinise Foundation, and Higher Ground USA. Sgt. Will Gardner will not be the last venture for Max to help the veteran community, he's in it for the long haul. Thanks for joining me Max. Also, a shout out to my good friends at Bottle Breacher and Combat Flags! PS: I'm a big fan of all the charities, especially Warriors Heart. In this podcast we discuss David Mamet's 2008 film "Redbelt." This is a great movie, and a worthy addition to his long line of films that explore the moral and ethical problems that men face as they try to reconcile their personal creeds with the world's corrupting influences. How we resolve this struggle will define what kind of man we are.

David Mamet's always one to put cons in his films, even when the film is a fight film taking place in the world of mixed martial arts. His 2008 film, "Redbelt," feels like a mash-up of genres — a con film, a fight film, a film noir, a samurai film, an intimate character portrait. It's a bit of all of these, and probably because it's hard to pin it down, it couldn't find its audience when it was released. Despite that, we wanted to include it in our David Mamet Directs series. Join us — Pete Wright and Andy Nelson — as we discuss the 10th film Mamet's directed. We discuss the nature of the genre mash-up and how it works for us, compared with how it worked for audiences when it came out. We talk about our opinions of the film and why it works for us, despite numerous problems. We chat about Chewie — the amazing Chiwetel Ejiofor — and not only what he brings to the role of the jiu jitsu instructor who stands by his principles against all adversity, but also how that helps make the film what it is (especially the final moments). And we talk about the amazing Robert Elswit and what he brings to the film through his stellar cinematography. It's a fascinating, wonderful film that definitely deserves to be seen by more people. Check it out and tune in! Hey! You know what would be awesome? If you would drop us a positive rating on iTunes! After a small delay involving missing audio files, Rock and Reel is back for a grand episode number 10. With double-digits comes a show that's as packed as ever with goodness. This episode, Kevin and I talk all about the first big summer blockbuster, "Iron Man". With Kevin being a huge comic book geek and my own hands almost never having touched a comic book before, we technically have the bases covered for those familiar with the back story to those who just went simply because it looked cool and Robert Downey Jr. is awesome in general. But despite these good signs for the film, did it pass our litmus test for a superhero film? Listen and find out.Following that, we give our Album of the Week a Chicago-centric touch by reviewing the new record by Local H, titled "12 Angry Months". It's a concept album about the ups and downs (mostly downs) of ending a relationship. Singer Scott Lucas reportedly wrote it after a year of struggling when his girlfriend broke up with him. The idea is nothing new, however does it sound fresh? And where does it stand in terms of the Local H catalogue? We've got the scoop for you.To help wrap things up, we're introducing a new segment that's music-focused, aptly titled Roots and Influences. The concept is easy in that we talk about the various bands and artists that have played a major role in the development of sound for another particular band or artist. For our first Roots and Influences we keep with the Local H theme and discuss how their sound has evolved. You'll also be able to hear a couple songs by some of the bands we mention, so if you're a fan of grunge and punk this is not to be missed.Next episode we'll be reviewing the movie "Redbelt" starring Chiwetel Ejiofor and Tim Allen, and we'll also give our opinions on the new Death Cab for Cutie album "Narrow Stairs." Check back for that soon!0:00-0:51 Intro0:51-21:05 Movie Review: Iron Man21:05-38:41 Album of the Week: Local H - 12 Angry Months (feat. song "Jesus Christ, Did You See The Size Of That Sperm Whale?")38:41-1:00:50 Roots and Influences (new segment!): Local H (feat. songs by Nirvana and Cheap Trick)1:00:50-1:02:47 Closing/Preview of Next Week(click on the podcast icon above for the show, or subscribe with podcatcher software)Subscribe and let us know what you think! A David Mamet movie. You know it is dense as all hell, but it is more than worth it. The casting is amazing...especially the star, Chiwetel Ejiofor, who I don't even attempt to say the name of in this review. I, also, don't bother trying to give too many details about the movie, because that way lies madness. You can't start giving out details about a Mamet story without getting lost in the process.
There are few figures in American culture as with as potent a step as David Mamet (American Buffalo, House of Games, Heist), first as a playwright, then as a filmmaker. With his new movie, Redbelt, he takes on a new frontier, the action film. We hear how he came to climb that mountain.
