This week we explore a little less known hymn than usual. First published in 1847, "Through the Love of God Our Savior" by Mary Peters is one of security found in our Savior, Jesus Christ. "The only way to combat the lies of the serpent is with our strongest weapon…God's Word. When Jesus was tempted, he went to scripture. And I don't know about you, but if Jesus's weapon against the lies of Satan is scripture; then it should be ours too!"I love how hymns, especially the one's that have stood the test of time, remind us of God's Word. Buried within the poetry and beauty of our greatest hymns we find deep theological truth and doctrine that remind us of who God is and what He has done for us through the finished work of Jesus, This song is another one of those great reminders. Listen and enjoy! Unionism at another crossroads:Monday was the birthday of partition. It was a century since the Northern State formally came into existence with the passing into law on May 3, 1921 of the Government of Ireland Act. Unionist parties, the British government and some others tried –unsuccessfully for the most part – to turn this into a birthday celebration. The British government's colonial office in Belfast, the NIO (Northern Ireland Office), not the Executive or Assembly, was given the task of organising this. Some bright spark came up with the idea of using Seamus Heaney and Mary Peters' images under the tagline “Our Story in the Making: NI Beyond 100”. It was supposed to be all about “the spirit of inclusivity, mutual respect and optimism.” It backfired. No-one had asked the Heaney family. The NIO claimed that the Seamus Heaney Centre at Queen's University had given its permission for the portrait to be used but this was denied. There was outrage and uproar with many quoting Seamus Heaney's own words: “Be advised, my passport's green/No glass of ours was ever raised to toast the Queen.” Israel still enforcing apartheid:I make no apologies for returning again to the plight of the Palestinian people living under the yoke of Israeli apartheid laws and policies. Last week Human Rights Watch published a 224 page report on the policies and actions of the Israeli state.

The Mississippi Moments Decades Series continues counting down to the Center for Oral History and Cultural Heritage 50th Anniversary Celebration in 2021. Today we dip into an interview conducted in August of 1973. Mrs. Mary Lillian Peters (Ogden) Whitten graduated from Mississippi Normal College (USM) with a degree in Music Education in 1923. She has many fond and entertaining memories of college life in those early days, but in this episode, we focus on her life growing up on a farm in Noxubee County. 1973 – Mary Whitten of Macon, Mississippi was born on her family’s farm in 1904. She remembers selling vegetables and dairy products to the local agricultural high school for extra income. Farm life in Mississippi during the early 20th Century required hard work and self-sufficiency. Whitten recalls hunting wild honey and hickory nuts and smoking meat in winter.  After Whitten’s father died in 1915, the entire family worked to keep their dairy farm going. She describes rounding up the cows for milking and washing clothes in a nearby spring. Part of Whitten’s responsibilities included churning cream and clabber into butter and buttermilk. She recounts feeling heartbroken once after accidentally spilling the contents of the churn.

Being a heptathlete (we imagine; we’re hardly speaking from experience here at Backstraight HQ…) requires not only explosiveness, endurance, technical finesse, and sublime co ordination, but nerves of absolute steel. The psychological challenges of the event have proven a stumbling block for many physically-gifted athletes, and to be able to reach into your bag of tricks and deliver a third round clearance, lifetime best, or gutsy 800 metres at the end of two gruelling days of competition requires the mentality of a supreme competitor. Niamh Emerson, from what we’ve seen so far, is one of those. Bronze at her first major senior championships, gold in Tampere after the most dramatic of 800 metres, and silver behind KJT with the best pentathlon performance ever executed by a teenager: we have grown accustomed to this athlete bringing her A-game every time. Great Britain’s heptathlon heritage is as rich as they come - Mary Rand, Mary Peters, Judy Simpson, Denise Lewis, Kelly Sotherton, Jess Ennis-Hill, and Katarina Johnson Thompson - and it seems increasingly evident that Emerson’s name is destined to join that illustrious roster. A knee tendon tear in Gotzis might have brought her season to an abrupt halt, but her outlook is remarkably positive, with Tokyo drawing ever-closer, and this pause in her meteoric ascent the perfect opportunity to reflect upon her career so far. Friendships with Jess and Kat, working on her explosive power whilst maintaining that fantastic 800 metres of hers, and how on earth she always manages to find that extra centimetre when the pressure’s on: we hope you enjoy this latest interview special. Here’s a seven-event challenge of your own, should you choose: listen to this episode, give it a share to spread the Emerson love, review the Backstraight Boys (& Girl) podcast, let us know your thoughts (@BackstraightB & @Claire_GThomas), follow us on Instagram (@BackstraightBoysPodcast), join our Fantasy DL League (PIN: 5533292), and - finally - just keep being the awesome listeners that you already are x

Here’s a sport quiz for you. Name a world-class athlete who hailed from the state of Nebraska: an Olympic champion, a hall of famer, someone who was among the very best at his or her game. (And no sneaking over to Google!) If you’re stumped, as I was, you’ll find some hints below. But first, think of another distant land with the same population as Nebraska (roughly 1.8 million), far removed from financial and industrial centers, like the state on the American Plains, with a hard climate and a waning economy. Then mix in violent sectarian conflict that turns athletic rivals into bitter enemies. Yet surprisingly, from this marginal and divided region came the greatest footballer of his generation, an Olympic gold-medalist in the pentathlon, a world champion boxer, and a young golfer hailed as the sport’s next great star. This is Northern Ireland. Teddy Jamieson grew up in Coleraine, a small city in County Londonderry. He was a boy when the Troubles began, but as he explains in the interview, his hometown was mostly quiet in the years of bombings and shootings. Nevertheless, he was eager to leave to go to university, and he has lived in Scotland ever since. Teddy came to realize early on, however, that he would never be Scottish. That realization came while watching sports.
