Your life journey and mine have been filled with ‘defining moments’ which sometimes affect the rest of our lives. For the past three days in our “Walking with Jesus” journey we’ve been experiencing a ‘defining moment’ with Jesus and His disciples at Caesarea Philippi as recorded for us in Matthew 16.  Today the story continues with another ‘defining moment’ as Jesus is preparing His disciples for what Jesus knows will happen on Passover/Easter weekend, only a few weeks away, but the disciples don’t have any idea, nor could they imagine it!  (Click here to see full text, images and links)   Pastor Doug Anderson    “Let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, with our eyes fixed on Jesus…” (Heb. 12:1,2)Have a comment or question about today's chapter? I'm ready to hear from you, contact me here. What does the Last Supper have to tell us about Easter? The setting is dusty, ancient Jerusalem, buzzing with Pesach activity. Earlier in the week, Jesus entered the city to triumphant shouts of “Hosanna to the Son of David!” And as you saw Him waving to the people from atop His donkey, you noticed a heaviness behind His smile. With Passover and Easter upon us, this time of year, we often think about the meaning of freedom, survival, and renewal. Directed by Sally El Hosaini from a screenplay that she co-wrote with Jack Thorne, The Swimmers is a 2022 biographical sports drama film dealing with similar themes. The plot follows the true life story of teenage Syrian refugees Yusra Mardini and her sister Sarah Mardini, who swam alongside a sinking dinghy of refugees to lighten it, and eventually help 18 refugees to reach safety across the Aegean Sea while being smuggled from İzmir towards Lesbos. Subsequent struggles as refugees are vividly depicted, but Yusra Mardini's swimming career sees her reaching the Rio 2016 Olympics as a member of the Refugee Olympic Team. In the final credits, we learn that Sarah in 2016 returned to Lesbos as part of voluntary efforts to assist incoming refugees. She was arrested and faces charges carrying potentially long-term prison sentences, if convicted. Yusra and Sarah are played by real-life sister Lebanese Actresses, Nathalie Issa & Manal Issa. The film also stars, Ahmed Malek, German Actor, Matthias Schweighöfer (playing The Swimming Coach),  Ali Suliman, Kinda Alloush, James Krishna Floyd and Elmi Rashid Elmi. November 11, 2022 it was in limited release in cinemas, then shown at the evening gala of the Marrakesh International Film Festival on November 18, 2022, before its streaming release by Netflix, on November 23, 2022. As accredited media, I was at its world premiere red carpet Gala and Q & A at the 2022 Toronto International Film Festival on September 8, 2022 to conduct interviews and discuss the status of refugees, freedom, and the importance of pursuing your dreams. Enjoy this episode with my compliments this Passover/Easter weekend!

Guests:Kevin Meeker, Bill Elmer, Mike Dalewitz, Jesse Bongiovi Synopsis:This week we're focused on all the greatest hits--meaning some amazing restaurateurs who have adapted their venues (and menus) to come up with delightful dining options that everyone can enjoy!  And we love to wet your appetite, so we're plating up those heavenly dishes with a rosé that everyone's raving over!We first spoke with Keg & Kitchen's Chef Bill Elmer and Owner, Kevin Meeker.  Although the two have known one another for years, this is the first time Elmer has worked for Meeker. These two friends have years of experience and familiarity with one another, which lends itself to scrumptious results that patrons of Keg & Kitchen can enjoy.  Chef Elmer, who is familiar with Owner Meeker's famed Philadelphia Fish Company, designed specials based on the former PFC's menu. Those specials are currently available throughout Lent, Easter, and some will be integrated into their Spring & Summer seasonal menu too.  Look for those specials, along with daily Happy Hour options (including General Manager Matthew Marks inventive cocktails and mocktails), and other exciting events happening at Keg & Kitchen!Afterwards, we had an in-depth discussion with Attorney turned Restaurateur, Mike Dalewitz.  Dalewitz, who is the Founder of 618 Hospitality Group and Co-Owner of The Borscht Belt, joined us on Food, Farms, & Chefs to chew over how his career path ventured into the hospitality business.  The highly driven, and self-motivated entrepreneur had a knack to fish out a niche; one of which led him to meet Co-Owner and Chef, Nick Liberato.  And a love of all things delicatessen bloomed, opening The Borscht Belt in Stockton, NJ.  Due to certain circumstances the former location of the Borscht Belt needed to be closed, but the pair are excited to announce the launch of The Borscht Belt in Newtown, PA this coming April, and The Borscht Belt Museum will be launching this month in Ellenville, NY along with hosting the first Borscht Belt Fest this summer!Lastly, we hear from Jesse Bongiovi--yes, that name should sound familiar--who invited all of us to spring into rosé season with his latest vintage of Hampton Water.  Creative minds must think alike, seeing as Co-Owners Jesse, his father Jon Bon Jovi, and long-time friend Ali Thomas joined forces to create a Rosé with Vintner Gerard Bertrand.  Their 'pink juice' was inspired after years of traveling with Jesse's father and indulging in Rosé, oftentimes during visits to the Hampton's.  And this is not some insipid label being brandished by someone famous; the Rosé has been awarded 90-Points for every vintage produced since its inception.  Hampton Water Rosé is a blend of 60% Grenache; 15% Cinsault; 15% Mourvèdre and 10% Syrah which is then fermented inside French Oak barrels--it tastes wonderful on your palate, or feel free to create cocktail using Hampton Water Rosé as your base.

ChayaLeah Sufrin and Yael Bar-tur hardly need an introduction, since this is their third visit to The Unspeakable! Last fall, the hosts of the acclaimed podcast Ask A Jew explained the meaning of Yom Kippur, Rosh Hashanah, and Sukkot (or the “autumn holidays,” as Meghan calls them). Now, it's the spring holiday, and Yael gives her version of the Passover story before ChayaLeah steps in and sets the record straight. ChayaLeah also explains some of the more unusual customs of Orthodox Jews during Passover, including lining your entire kitchen with tin foil and getting your car detailed to make sure it's completely devoid of crumbs. They also talk about everyone's favorite topic, the “crisis of masculinity,” and whether matchmaking practices among the Orthodox are better than dating apps. On a lighter note, Yael explains the current political situation in Israel.    In the bonus portion for Unspeakale Substack subscribers, Yael and ChayaLeah reflect on being the ages that they are and also talk more about incels.   The Unspeakable will take next week off for Passover/Easter/spring break and will return April 17.   Guest Bios: ChayaLeah Sufrin was raised in an Orthodox Jewish home in Long Beach, CA.  After attending university in New York, ChayaLeah moved back to Southern California and spent fifteen years teaching High school Jewish history and as the Education Director at Shul by the Shore. ChayaLeah served as the Senior Jewish Educator at Long Beach Hillel for three years and is now the Executive Director. ChayaLeah, together with her husband Boruch, has four  teenage sons. Yael Bar-tur is a crisis communications and social media consultant who previously served as the director of social media and digital strategy for the New York City Police Department where she developed and implemented the social media and digital communications strategy.

The Peter Schiff Show Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 3, 2018 35:53

Really a Head Fake As I suspected and as I stated in my last podcast at the end of the first quarter, I speculated that the rally that closed out the quarter was really a head fake. When the quarter started, I said you would see a resumption of the downtrend of the evolving bear market, which I believe we are already in. Bear Market Even though technically we're not there yet because we're not down 20%, but you can't get to 20% without first hitting 10%. Although not officially acknowledged, we are in a bear market. Just as often a recession is not acknowledged until after 2 quarters of negative GDP growth, but clearly you're in the recession for a long time before it's officially acknowledged.  That doesn't mean you weren't in a recession before they admitted it, albeit not officially.  Similarly, they haven't proclaimed this bear market. The Fed Could Change the Game There's one caveat:  if the Federal Reserve comes in and changes the game by taking away the rate hikes or launching QE4, then we may never make it to a bear market.  But if the Fed continues on its current path and maintains the current pretense, then we are in a bear market and it's only a question of time before it is officially acknowledged. No Real News to Blame for Sell Off As I expected, traders came back from the Passover/Easter break and started to sell.  They came in almost out of the bell; no real news to blame the selloff on.  Now they tried to blame it on Trump and the tariffs, and while I agree that tariffs are a problem, there was nothing new over the weekend.  Yes, China came out and announced a couple of billion dollars worth of tariffs on some agricultural products, etc, but this was not unanticipated.  Anybody who did not think this was coming - c'mon - China could have could have done a lot worse than this. Any News is an Excuse to Sell In fact, the market could have just as easily rallied on the fact that this is such a small response and they could have said, "Oh, this is nothing, it could have been a lot worse!" So the markets could have bought, if they were in a buying mood. But this is a bear market, and so all news is bad news.  So, whatever the news is, that's an excuse to sell. Chinese Tariffs on Agricultural Products But what it does, is it lulls investors into a false sense of security: "Well, the market's not going down for any reason", "It's not because we're in a bear market, it's because of the reaction to the news that the Chinese are going to have tariffs on agricultural products.
