Companies Need to Transform Manufacturing While Reshoring

A Reshoring Initiative report estimates that companies bringing operations back to the U.S. helped to create up to 350,000 new jobs in 2022.Dr. Matthew Putman, the CEO of Nanotronics, supports reshoring but encourages companies to consider transforming manufacturing."If you see a lot of the initiatives right now to bring manufacturing to the U.S., they are $100 billion or $80 billion," Putman said. "These huge proposals are thought to be what's required for NextGen manufacturing. I think that manufacturing could be much less expensive. You can do a lot more distributed, smaller manufacturing because of major advances that have been made in software such as artificial intelligence."AI has become more creative. Putman cited advancements such as ChatGPT, a chatbot that generates text, and DeepMind, an AI engine that defeated a professional human in Go, an abstract strategy board game."What if a manufacturing facility could ask a question of artificial intelligence to win the game of producing the best product?" Putman asked. Putman stresses that this would not involve brand new technology or engineering. "This is the real exciting promise because it's completely software," Putman said. "Humans are now the creative force that is trying to optimize for new products that they would like to see in the world, new advances and new technologies rather than those that are doing the laborious tasks. It's just a new way of looking at manufacturing in general."While portions of AI practices are being used, Putman believes the full realization is still a few years away. But Putman's company, Nanotronics, is already using the capabilities. Nanotronics is an advanced machines and intelligence company that helps customers solve unique inspection and process control challenges for precision manufacturing. "We built a factory in nine months that was able to produce everything from medical devices to factory instrumentation by using prefab techniques and our own AI algorithms," Putman said. "We're starting to build these in places in the United States and around the world."Terms like automation and AI can catch the attention of factory workers concerned about machines replacing their jobs. However, Putman said the technological advancements he promotes would add jobs. "Factory work now is high tech work," Putman said. "[In] a machine shop, especially a machine shop that uses artificial intelligence, you're spending time at monitors and stations as much as you are actually cutting things physically because you're collaborating with a robot and with an AI. "There are new skills to be learned, but those skills don't require Ph.D. education. They're skills that can be learned on the job. They're skills that require a new type of training education that companies can provide. Or we can look at a new way of doing trade education."Putman said Nanotronics proves the effectiveness of AI internally and uses it as an example for its 250 global customers in industries such as biomedical, semiconductor and aerospace.  For example, Nanotronics uses artificial intelligence for manual assembly and has an AI agent guide humans to assemble more precisely. Additionally, Nanotronics' customers will use AI in their control systems and be able to identify problems. As a result, the company can correct the problems based on predictions instead of issues that have already happened. "[It's] making the ultimate AI forecasting of what's going to occur rather than what has already occurred," Putman said. "Internally, we use this technology for everything from assembly to machining."Putman has wanted to implement AI in manufacturing operations for about 11 years. He

The Reboot Chronicles with Dean DeBiase

On this episode of the Reboot Chronicles, I talked with Matthew Putman, CEO Nanotronics, a dynamic group transforming a broad spectrum of manufacturing and processing industries, through artificial intelligence, science and other cutting-edge stuff. I don't say this often, but if you are involved in the manufacturing space, you should check out what they are doing to bring manufacturing into the 21st century. Matthew and his team started out creating a platform that combined AI, automation, and imagining to find flaws in factories. The global Automated Optical Inspection market is a hot space, which promises to reduce waste and costs, while speeding up designs across most all industries. His vision evolved into a dynamic platform that tackles this whitespace bringing the next-generation of capabilities to a sector that has not experienced enough change in the last 100 years—manufacturing. Thinking beyond the core of manufacturing Mathew and his Dad also began to focus on home healthcare innovation. In the depths of the 2020 pandemic they launched Nanotronics Health, and a new product nHale™, which quickly received EUA from the U.S. Food & Drug Administration to assist patients suffering from COVID. It is a non-invasive approach designed to be used in non-life-threatening situations, without invasive ventilatory support. Next up, potentially producing personalized medicine to best-fit consumer needs through genomic sequencing. Nanotronics is currently working with some of the largest genomic sequencing companies to curate out-of-the-box thinking and create new products, services and ventures. A talented musician, Matthew points out the parallels of playing jazz music to the art of innovation. When a musician plays, they must utilize different parts of the brain to create or play music. Like musicians jamming together, working together, either in person or virtually across the globe, is often about serendipity and improvising, so it is essential to trust your gut—because it's all that you may have in the spur of the moment. Consider the computer mouse. It takes a massive, sprawling, global system, and thousands of parts and people from all over the world, many months, or even years after conceptualization, and design, to get that product to your desk. But what if you could do it all in a "factory" the size of your one-bedroom apartment… in a building down the street? I sat down with Matthew Putman and talked about the future of manufacturing. In the first place, everything is getting smaller. We talked about his company’s journey from the microscope, his grand ambition with the work, the future of nanotechnology, the factory that lives inside your bedroom, and what this all means for the future of our city. It’s distributed, decentralized manufacturing. Welcome to the nano-factory.

Today we're capturing vast amounts of data about every single process that takes place on the factory floor. And while that data is proving very useful, we're only just beginning to be able to use it to optimize decision-making and create better products. In this episode, Jon Prial talks with Matthew Putman, the Co-Founder and CEO of Nanotronics. On this episode we take a look at the role technology plays in conservation efforts. First we speak with Topher White of Rainforest Connection, which deploys used cell phones in tropical forests around the world to provide real-time monitoring of forests and wildlife. Its network alerts local communities when illegal logging activities are taking place and can then be stopped, for example. Then we speak with Matthew Putman, he's the CEO of Nanotronics and an applied physicist with a keen interest in conservation. We discuss some of the technologies that he sees making the biggest contributions to the way we approach conservation, and why he believes these advances can help turn the tide against environmental degradation. Plus we round up the past weeks' top news. Jesse and Trav had to do one without the powers of the Seth, but we at BVCHQ couldn't be happier with how this one turned out. Matt has what could be considered an indie drummer's "dream resume." This guy has played with everybody; just check his wiki page. We went a little long but that's because Matt has so much ground to cover. With stories like his unorthodox way of joining Living Sacrifice, breaking up overseas with Eso-Charis and leaving for Ohio to do a short stint with Lovedrug and staying for two years, we're sure you won't mind a little overtime. Here are a ton of show notes: Matt did quite a bit of work for us for this show. He is a great guy and we recommend checking out all of his musical endeavors...and there are quite a few. We'll get you started: Ok so is Matt's wiki page: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Matthew_Putman_(musician) Here is a link to a dropbox folder of all of the music that Matt sent us to hear: https://www.dropbox.com/sh/3m78poooml3n1f6/AAALstiHtgJK7Txv5n-5TreMa?dl=0 Here is the list of music in the dropbox folder Matt sent us, plus a small bio of each song: Benchmark - The Reality of Distance I'm pretty sure that Benchmark were the first Fort Smith band that released a 7", but I might be wrong. There are 3 songs and they all rip. This is what we called "Emo" before bands like SDRE (whom I love) and Promise Ring took over the genre and definition. This 7" was a huge influence on Eso-Charis. Rash Of Beatings - Pig Raped Citizen This is probably the 2nd 7" released by a Fort Smith band, and it was revolutionary. Punk Grindcore, fast and violent. These guys were legends around here, and still friends to this day. This song is a personal favorite. It was recorded LIVE with Barry Poynter, no overdubs. Each song is one take and the whole thing just melts. Barry did a ton of records with T&N/SS. He said these guys had BO, which is awesome. Burned Up Bled Dry - Count On Yourself BUBD was basically Benchmark with the bass player switching to guitar (because he's a riff-master). Awesome Grindcore with a punk feel. They also recorded this entire 7" (Cloned Slaves For Slaves) LIVE with Barry Poynter. Eso-Charis played lots of shows with BUBD back in the day. Eso-Charis - The Absolute Progress of a Nothing Day This song is from our only 7", titled "Setting Roots For Winter", released on Deadself Recordings (Jarrod Norris). It had the last 2 songs we ever wrote, recorded after we broke up. It's a SUPER crusty recording, but that's how we wanted it. We took our budget and worked with our friend Matt Depper to buy equipment so we could record it ourselves. We had no idea what we were doing, but we took our time in the studio and added lots of other sounds. It's lo-fi, but I'm really proud of it. I've seen this 7" go for $50 and higher on Ebay. Current bands I am involved with Bear Colony - Flask Retort This song is from my band Bear Colony. It was released on our sophomore album "Soft Eyes" in late 2012 on Esperanza Plantation, an awesome record label out of Jackson, MS. This album marked my first time producing, composing, and performing. It was a blast. I created the main section for this song using acapella vocal samples from the Beach Boys "Pet Sounds" sessions. Family History - Howlin' This is my band with Chase Pagan, whom I've recorded and played with for a decade. Chase decided he wanted more of a band feel for his next album, so he wrote some amazing songs and enlisted awesome players to join us. We tracked the bulk of it with my brother Adam (Insomniac Studios) and added percussion and vocals in my garage. I love this album and hope it see's the light of day eventually. Prom Nights - Pissswap This is my band with an old friend, Evan Garner. He played in Benchmark and Burned Up Bled Dry. He is the riff-master that I mentioned previously. This is just the two of us fucking around in my garage. The best description would be instru-metal with a mathy bent. I recorded these tracks in my garage (turd) and my brother Adam (Insomniac Studios) did an awesome mix/master job on them (polished turd). It's a fun project with a good friend. Fear Is The Driving Force - Diet Cocaine Habit This is a band with my brother Cory, who plays in Norma Jean and started Eso-Charis with me. We grew up playing Slayer and Alice-in-Chains riffs together in our parents basement, so the chemistry is great. He is also a riff master and writes songs that blow my mind. We are working on our full length album, and it's close. This is just a demo that we did to raise funds for the full length.
