Just three high school coaches have ever been inducted into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame, and one of those is Bob Hurley. Despite only coaching at a small private Catholic school in New Jersey, Hurley sent over 150 players to Division I college programs and half a dozen to the NBA. In addition, he never took any payment for his coaching or speaking engagements over his 40+ years in the role in order to save St. Anthony's as much money as he could to fund the students' tuition. This man truly epitomized the idea of being a pillar of the community. Dan Kiser has spent more time with legendary coaches than any "normal" high school coach we know. From Don Meyer to Morgan Woooten and Howard Garfinkel, Bob Hurley, Dan Hughes, Steve Fisher, Bob Huggins, Steve Moore and Nate Oates, Dan Kiser has learned the game with the legends by working camps, sharing information and immersing himself in the sport. A stellar high school career at Wadsworth in Ohio sparked a lifelong passion for the game, and at the young age of 26 Dan found himself a college head coach on the east coast. Although the success did not come easily, he then moved on to multiple coaching roles and is now the assistant coach at Randolph High. His day job at the Brandon School, a school that serves boys who deal with social and emotional issues, has taught Kiser the value of listening. Trust and love is at the heart of what the kids need, and Dan's sense of humor and real approach endear him with the kids. After quarantining with Covid-19, Kiser hopes to get back to the court soon as we open up the gyms soon. Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/teachercoach)

Crown Council Mentor of the Month | Helping Dental Teams Build a Culture of Success
In a city mired in endless decay, where the youth suffer through all the horrors of urban blight, hope comes in a most unassuming form: a tiny brick schoolhouse run by two Felician nuns where a singular basketball genius takes teenagers from the mean streets of Jersey City and turns them into champions on the hardcourt. Coach Bob Hurley had been working miracles at St. Anthony High School for over thirty years, winning state and national championships and offering his players rescue from their surroundings through college scholarships, when he met his most dysfunctional team yet. Steve Anderson interview Coach Bob Hurley for this Mentor of the Month.
Evans & Mondy are back to bring you news and views from across planet shred, although mainly focused on their own narrow, blinkered versions of the universe and their online echo chambers. After Margaret's CT events wrapping up and John and Steph in Jeep Yellow Jerseys, the lads ask, should we just call the year off now? Meanwhile, a new campaign in underfoot to #SendSlaterToCoventry. Remember when the UK media weren't allowed to broadcast Gerry Adams' voice? Paul advocates similar measures for Slater. Elsewhere, the big questions are dealt with: Does Ben really like Women's surfing, or is it just in it for the WSL day rate? Should you ask folk you don't really know or particularly like/trust 'So, been surfing?' What does the Book of Exodus have to say about daughters? What's Nigel Slater's new cookery series on the Middle East like? DCI Evans and Constable Mondy return with a charge sheet bigger and more star studded than Brian Cox's recent revelations about the size of the observable universe, as the Social Media Police feel collars belonging to Defay, Igarashi, the Keramas ducks, Bob Hurley, Strider & Kingy. Running time: 52min21s Part 1: Intro Part 2: Good / Bad Part 3: Social Media Police, ISA Yawn & #SendSlaterToCoventry
The school has had considerable success in basketball The girls' basketball team, led since 1972 by New Jersey's winningest girls' basketball coach, Jeff Jasper, has won 30 consecutive league titles (1979 through 2008), and seven county championships to go along with multiple state titles. The girls' basketball team won the Group III state championship in 1981 (vs. Camden Catholic High School), 1982 (vs. North Hunterdon High School) and 1989 (vs. Mainland Regional High School), and the Group II title in 2005 and 2008 (vs. Rumson-Fair Haven High School in both years). In 2008, the Indians won the Group II State title with a 58–52 win against Rumson-Fair Haven Regional High School, qualifying for the state Tournament of Champions, and giving Jasper the 800th coaching victory. Jasper was inducted by the New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association into its Bollinger High School Hall of Fame in 2006. The 2010 girls' basketball team was NBIL champions and won the North I, Group III state sectional title, defeating top-seed Teaneck High School 51-47. Jasper earned his 900th win in January 2013, joining Bob Hurley as the only other coach in state history to reach that mark. On January 11, 2018, Jasper earned his 1,000th career coaching victory with a 73-25 win against Northern Highlands Regional High School, becoming the first girls basketball coach in New Jersey to reach this milestone, joining Hurley again as the only other high school basketball coach in New Jersey with 1,000 or more wins @jasperpascack --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/kevin-furtado/support

In the late 1960s, parole officer Bob Hurley became basketball coach at St Anthony’s High School in Jersey City, New Jersey. In the years that followed, as the city got poorer and its streets more dangerous, Hurley’s infamously exacting coaching style turned class after class of young men into championship material and put St Anthony’s—a school that didn’t even have its own gym—on the basketball map, winning multiple state championships and hundreds of games. Former NBA basketball player and one-time Democratic Party politician Terry Dehere tells the story of this very special high school with help from several generations of St. Anthony’s players and supporters.
The @pyzelsurfboards Instagram followers submitted questions, Bob reads them, Jon answers and they both discuss.
George Esquivel makes shoes. That may not sound remarkable. But, it is. It is remarkable because he makes shoes in the U.S., where everything seems to have been outsourced. It is remarkable because of where his story begins. From driving a delivery truck, to the highest realms of the fashion industry, Esquivel has gained fans and clients that include musicians, models, and Hollywood’s elite. How did George pull this off? Grit, audacity, and the gracious advice of people you’ve probably heard of, like Anna Wintour, Tommy Hilfiger, Bob Hurley, and more. Cowboy Surf Shop has been a leading force in Northern California since the early 70’s. Founded by Craig”Cowboy”Mac Arthur as Miramar Surf Boards in 1971 in it’s original location, the shop was mainly a showroom for the surfboards that Craig shaped and glassed, as well as serving as Half Moon Bay’s first surf shop. Many years have been spent learning and perfecting the trade of surfboard production, as well as other ventures including the opening of the retail store Cowboy Surf Shop in 1982. Craig also teamed with friend Chip Rowland, and Bob Hurley in 1984 to work as Northern California Sales Rep for the then start up surf line Billabong. His duties consisted of building the Northwestern territory for Billabong, and managing the Northern California Billabong Surf Team. Craig recruited local talent from his territory which consisted of surfers like Daryl “Flea” Virotsgo, brother Troy, Nate & Zach Acker, Richard & Dave Schmidt, Vince Collier, Adam Repogle, and many more. Other duties stemmed from teaming up with Billabong’s pro surfers like “Sunny Garcia” and “Doogle Walker”when surfing in local contests like the O’Neill Coldwater Classic, or going on photo shoots to distant locations for surfing magazines with other pro surfers. Craig’s sales reputation soon earned him jobs with other prominent companies like Rusty Presendorfer who was just getting his clothing line going, and soon hired Craig as his Northern California Sales Rep. Utilizing Craigs relationship with stores & shops, Rusty was a shoe-in with his line of T ‘Shirts and Stickers, and was soon on his way to liable recognition in Northern California . Craig was also hired as Sales Rep for Billabongs sister like company Peak Wetsuits, headed out by John “The Butcher” Howitt, the Aussie wetsuit entrepreneur who later went on to start Quiksilver Wetsuits. It was about four and a half years into his sale repping career when Craig was recruited by the local Surf / Rock Band Bug. Led by Singer Web Fingers, and Bassist Bubba Luv, Craig was the newest member playing Lead Guitar. (Stage Name “Dude Broman”). See Bug click on image below After several years of hard work, recording, rehearsing, playing gigs, and Frat Parties, Bug had worked it’s way up the local circuit to the point of being a major player on the Bay Area music scene. Bug had found a home at the Cactus Club in San Jose where their hard core followers packed the venue night after night, headlining, and also playing support for acts like Primus. Mary’s Danish, The Vandals, Urban Dance Squad, and Mojo Nixon, (just to name a few). Bug also won the the” Bay Area Battle of the Bands” contest, and played to thousands of people at the Oakland Collesieum, as well as plying every major venue in the San Francisco Bay Area. Bug was well on their way to stardom, local rock magazines were revue them almost weekly, and one went as far as saying that “Bug was going to be the next bay area rock band after Primus to go over the top”. The press did not go unnoticed, and local recording studio mogul Joel Jaffe from Studio D in Sausalito had picked up on the buzz, and invited the band to come down to the lavish studio to record a 3 song demo that he would shop to some of his record label connections. Things were going great with repping, and playing in the band. Craig started to date one of the Bug dancers, Lucy Turner, who soon became a cult fav as Hippi Bitch, a character in one of the bands popular songs.
I sat down with my old pal Bob, founder of Hurley International, to talk about his initial dream of being a pro surfer, selling his company to Nike, and the work we've done together over the years building leaders at Hurley. Hurley founder and chairman Bob Hurley has made his work his play from the beginning. As a shop kid in Huntington Beach, he nimbly moved to blank-maker, fin-foiler and shaper before acquiring the license to Billabong USA in 1982. Bob started his own clothing brand in 1999 embracing the spirit and creativity of youth. He remains deeply involved in company operations today, except when “product-testing” in Indo or Fiji. He currently resides in Newport Beach.
In this episode of the Basketball Hall of Fame Legends Podcast, host Kyle Belanger speaks with Class of 2010 Enshrinee Bob Hurley. Bob’s company, Hurley 45, helps businesses grow their sales by getting placement in major retail chains. Do you have a vision of seeing your product on the shelves in one of the big brand stores … maybe even a box store? Bob finds that many people want to jump in without a true understanding the intricacies involved. By nature of their size, large corporations have a lot of requirements: Financial, Logistical, Testing, Vendor Contracts, Pricing, Supply Chain Management, Private Label initiatives, Replenishment, are just a few. It’s important to have that dream of selling big, but not without the adequate preparation. Bob advises that you should have a strategic plan for growth not an impulsive plan for growth. The Start of Hurley 45Over the years Bob has acquired a unique skillset that is the strength behind Hurley 45. Right out of high school, Bob worked at Sears. He stayed with them for 15 years first as a district buyer and later in the regional buying office. There he learned and perfected his knowledge of sales and sales management. Next he worked for a sales rep agency, Randy Putnam & Associates. Bob took all that he learned from Sears on the retail side and applied it to the manufacturer side showing them how to sell their products to the retailers. In 2010, Bob stepped out on his own to form Hurley 45. Today he helps companies around the world identify their brand and pursue their goal of getting products placed in the various large retailer chains and box stores. Business Building InsightsWe don’t sell products. We sell who we are. Retailers are looking for a minimum of 55% margin up to 75-78% margin. Large store placement is a numbers game. You will sell large quantities of your product but your margin will be smaller. It’s a mindset switch and a numbers play. “You put dollars in the bank not percentages.” Consumer Product Safety Labels should not have misleading information and you must be able to back up all claims. What buyers want to know: your social media impact and your supply chain capabilities. Selling your product into small to mid size chains is the place to start and can lead you to the larger chains. In a bucket list type of moment, Matt gets to sit down with somebody he has long admired and wanted to speak with, Coach Bob Hurley, who led St. Anthony to greatness over a long career. Unfortunately, finances forced the small catholic school to close last year. Hurley sacrificed college and probably pro coaching riches to stay close to home and do the things he did for his community. He is an absolute inspiration and an encyclopedia of basketball and sports. More than anything, I learned first-hand that he is a truly great guy and somebody who deserves much more recognition and awareness for the great work he has done. This was a dream interview and I hope that everybody enjoys it!
