Mexico is sending some of its famous search and rescue dogs to Turkey to help look for people buried under rubble following February's earthquake.A plane with 16 dogs on board took off from Mexico City earlier on Tuesday.Mexico, which is prone to earthquakes, has highly specialized civilian and military teams which are often deployed to help when disasters strike.The dogs won the hearts of Mexicans during the country's 2017 quake when they saved several lives. The dogs are trained to sniff out humans and alert their handlers by barking and scratching the ground where the smell is strongest.Proteo was one of those dogs, who participated in saving people who were trapped under buildings. However, this canine hero died during the commission of his duties. While it was first believed that Proteo died in a building collapse during a rescue, his trainer, Carlos Villeda Maquez, explained that other factors were responsible for the dog's death. The conditions – including the brutally cold temperatures — were very harsh for the almost 10- year-old Proteo. Mexico was one of the Allies in World War II – but it didn't just help secure the US border or provide raw materials in support of the war – it contributed a fighter squadron that saw combat in the Pacific Theatre. Few people in the United States are aware of this history, and many Pacific War historians tend to overlook Mexico's contribution to the war. Nevertheless, the participation of that squadron marked a very significant moment in Mexican military history, in Mexican foreign policy, and in US/Mexico relations. To discuss the Mexican Expeditionary Force, 201st Fighter Squadron and the combat role it played in the Pacific War, we interviewed Walter Zapotoczny, author of The Aztec Eagles: The Forgotten Allies of World War II.

NATO's Chiefs of Defence meeting and new sanctions against North Korea  In this episode, NATO's Chiefs of Defence held their first meeting of year, Canada does not have much room to introduce new sanctions against North Korea and Cascade Aerospace to upgrade C-130 aircraft for the Mexican Air Force.  NATO Chiefs of Defence   At the 178th Military Committee in Chiefs of Defence Session held at NATO Headquarters in Brussels on the Jan 16th and 17th, the Allied Chiefs of Defence focused political and military priorities.  At the session, the topics of military contribution to security and stabilization in Europe's southern neighborhood, the NATO Command Structure (NCS) adaptation, the Resolute Support Mission in Afghanistan and the Global Coalition against ISIS and NATO's role in Iraq were all discussed.   New sanctions against North Korea  Canada may almost be out of options when it comes to developing new sanctions against North Korea. This is something that came out of the recent summit in Vancouver. Delegates from 20 countries left the summit pledging to consider new measures against Kim Jong-un's regime.  But the way it looks, Canada may not have much room to introduce new sanctions because it already has significant independent measures in place, according to the CBC.  A government official told CBC News that Ottawa will always evaluate its options, but what is in place now is already very strong.  Canada has a wide-ranging ban on trade, financial interactions and weapons with North Korea. The plan includes a few exceptions for humanitarian support.  When new sanctions were put in place last year by the United Nations Security Council, some of those measures were in line with regulations Canada already had in place.  At the summit, participants agreed to "consider and take steps to impose unilateral sanctions and further diplomatic actions that go beyond those required by UN Security Council resolutions."  But what those efforts could look like, were not disclosed.   Cascade Aerospace C-130 Hercules aircraft  Cascade Aerospace has been contracted to perform avionics modernisation of one (FAM) L-100 (C-130) Hercules aircraft for the Mexican Air Force.  The program is contracted through the Canadian Commercial Corporation (CCC) under a memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed between the governments of Canada and Mexico in November 2013.  Under the terms of the new contract, the company will be responsible for the installation and integration of Rockwell Collins' advanced Flight2 digital avionics suite.  Cascade Aerospace will also be responsible for delivering operational and technical training for the Mexican Air Force personnel at the company's facility and headquarters in Abbotsford, British Columbia.

On episode five of SOMEWHERE IN THE SKIES, Ryan introduces us to a UFO sighting that occurred in 2004 in which the Mexican Air Force reported eleven UFOs during a routine patrol flight. Infrared cameras mounted on the plane were able to capture the UFOs. Radio transmissions and an official report given to the Mexican Secretary of Defense made this a very intriguing case that received very little attention in the United States.  The UFO topic is often seen through very western eyes within the United States. But many extraordinary cases have occurred both on the southwestern border and through the skies and grounds of Mexico. And one individual who has looked extensively into these cases is Ruben Uriarte. In this episode, he and Ryan discuss the strange case known as the Cisco Grove incident, in which a UFO witness spent an entire night fighting off an entire fleet of alien humanoids and a robot-looking being. Ruben also speaks of the 1975 Carlos de los Santos case in which a pilot encountered three saucer-shaped UFOs surrounding his plane. They end the conversation talking about a lesser known UFO crash over the town of Coyame in which a mid-air collision supposedly took place between a conventional plane and an unknown aircraft. Bruce Maccabee has been active in UFO research since late 1960s when he joined the National Investigations Committee on Aerial Phenomena (NICAP) and was active in research and investigation for NICAP until its demise in 1980. He became a member of MUFON in 1975 and was subequently appointed to the position of state Director for Maryland, a position he still holds. In 1979 he was instrumental in establishing the Fund for UFO Research and was the chairman for the about 13 years. He presently serves on the National Board of the Fund.
