This week, we welcome back Ed Walters, Chief Strategy Officer at vLex, to discuss the latest advancements in legal AI. The conversation covers the evolving role of AI in legal research, the integration of multimodal AI capabilities, and the ethical considerations surrounding the technology. With the rapid pace of innovation in AI-powered tools, Walters provides insights into how vLex is adapting and pushing the boundaries of legal technology. His perspective underscores the importance of structured legal data, security measures, and law firms leveraging their proprietary data for competitive advantage. One of the key topics discussed is the impact of reasoning models in AI-powered legal research. Walters notes how tools such as OpenAI, Gemini, and Anthropic's latest models are transforming legal workflows by enabling more sophisticated research capabilities. These tools allow for more human-like interactions with AI, increasing efficiency in knowledge work by reducing non-billable research time. Walters emphasizes that while these advancements are impressive, legal professionals should always verify AI-generated content, ensuring that human judgment remains the final step in legal analysis.A particularly exciting development discussed in the interview is vLex's recent integration of multimodal AI capabilities, enabling the analysis of audio and video files. Walters explains how this feature allows lawyers to transcribe and analyze depositions, oral arguments, and client intake interviews securely within Vincent AI's SOC 2 Type 2 compliant environment. This breakthrough provides legal professionals with enhanced efficiency in document review and litigation preparation, reinforcing vLex's commitment to transparency and usability. The discussion highlights how these features bridge the gap between traditional and AI-powered legal workflows, streamlining processes while maintaining high-security standards. The conversation also explores vLex's integration of docket alarms into litigation workflows, allowing legal professionals to generate comprehensive profiles of opposing counsel and judges. This tool enables lawyers to analyze patterns in case filings, settlement tendencies, and motion success rates. Walters emphasizes that the ability to synthesize vast amounts of structured litigation data provides firms with a strategic advantage. However, he also acknowledges the ethical implications, stressing the need for transparency in AI-generated insights to maintain the integrity of legal practice. Finally, Walters shares his thoughts on the future of legal AI, predicting a shift toward the integration of law firms' proprietary data with public datasets. He highlights vLex's new initiative, Vincent Studio, which allows firms to create bespoke AI-driven workflows tailored to their specific needs. This, he argues, is the next frontier in legal tech, where law firms transition from passive AI adoption to active AI-driven innovation. As the industry continues to evolve, Walters reinforces the idea that while AI enhances legal practice, human expertise and oversight remain irreplaceable. His insights provide a compelling vision of how legal professionals can leverage AI to augment, rather than replace, their legal expertise.Vincent Studio Request: beta@vlex.comListen on mobile platforms:  Apple Podcasts |  Spotify | YouTube Blue Sky: @geeklawblog.com @marlgebEmail: geekinreviewpodcast@gmail.comMusic: Jerry David DeCiccaTranscript

We're pleased to welcome back Ed Walters, a thought leader in legal tech and innovation. Since Ed last spoke with us, he has become the chief strategy officer at vLex, which merged with Ed's previous company, Fastcase. vLex is a platform using AI solutions to streamline workflows and provide lawyers with greater access to knowledge and resources. About a year ago, the company launched Vincent AI, a legal intelligence platform that references real cases and materials from vLex's law library of over one billion legal documents. The tool is used by law firms, legal departments, and law schools around the world. In addition to his role at vLex, Ed continues to teach as an adjunct professor at Georgetown University Law Center and at Cornell Law School. He also writes on various topics about innovation in the legal industry. Today, Ed talks about how Fastcase merged with vLex, the response to Vincent AI, and how he hopes generative AI will enhance access to justice and improve lawyer training.

This week we talk with Ed Walters from VLex to explore the Autumn 2024 release of VLex's Vincent AI platform. Ed discusses a series of transformative updates that are turning Vincent AI from a legal research tool into a comprehensive platform that integrates drafting, transactional, and research tasks. These updates include new workflow tools, redlining capabilities, and an innovative feature called Prompt Assist, which enables users to have more control over the AI's responses by asking follow-up questions to refine their queries. This added transparency and auditability make Vincent AI more user-friendly and trustworthy, as Ed highlights throughout the discussion. One key feature of the Autumn 2024 release is the introduction of multi-turn conversations within the AI's responses. This enhancement allows users to continue asking follow-up questions, enabling a deeper exploration of legal issues without needing to start from scratch each time. We discuss how this mirrors tools like Perplexity, where AI can provide follow-up prompts to help users navigate complex inquiries. Vincent AI goes further by asking clarifying questions to ensure the results are tailored to the specific needs of the user, such as identifying which party is at risk in a contract. Ed emphasizes that legal professionals are not just conducting research for academic curiosity—they need actionable tools integrated into their workflow. Vincent AI's new capabilities, such as drafting briefs or analyzing redlines, reflect this shift by focusing on providing immediate, actionable insights. Ed explains how these workflow tools enable lawyers to dive straight into their work instead of first sifting through research results, creating a more efficient and integrated process for legal professionals. A significant highlight of the episode is the introduction of VIDA (Vincent in Docket Alarm), a new feature that combines VLex's Vincent AI with Docket Alarm's vast repository of court documents. This integration allows legal professionals to conduct deeper analyses of litigation trends, law firm strategies, and individual lawyer performance, offering unprecedented insight into how cases are being handled. Ed humorously mentions a suggestion from the VLex team to call this feature “DIVA” (Dockets in Vincent AI), but for now, it remains VIDA. This new development provides law firms with enhanced analytical capabilities to explore their own practices and those of competitors. Finally, the episode concludes with Greg and Ed discussing the broader implications of these tools for law firms, especially in managing large, multi-jurisdictional projects. Ed explains how the 50-state survey feature, a traditionally burdensome task, can now be completed in minutes, making it easier for firms to scan legal landscapes across the U.S. and globally. As Greg points out, this capability not only streamlines the process for legal teams but also creates new opportunities for firms to offer innovative services to clients. Throughout the episode, the conversation showcases how Vincent AI's latest updates are pushing the boundaries of legal technology. In this special episode of The Geek in Review, host Greg Lambert sits down with Ed Walters, Chief Strategy Officer at vLex, to discuss two significant announcements: the integration of vLex's Vincent AI with iManage Work and the automated docket ingestion feature with iManage using vLex's Docket Alarm. The integration between Vincent AI and iManage's Insight Plus collection allows law firms to leverage their internal knowledge assets alongside vLex's extensive public law database. This combination of the "two halves of the legal brain" enables lawyers to create brilliant first drafts and analyze documents using the power of generative AI. Walters emphasizes the importance of data quality and the role of knowledge management teams in curating the best practice documents for training AI models. Security is a top priority for both vLex and iManage in this integration. Walters details the various measures taken to ensure data protection, including encryption, dedicated master keys for each firm, and compliance with industry standards such as ISO 27001 and SOC 2. He also clarifies that vLex uses retrieval-augmented generation, securely passing relevant documents to a closed instance of the foundation model without training on the data itself. The second announcement focuses on the automated docket ingestion feature, which seamlessly saves court filings from Docket Alarm into the correct iManage folders. This practical solution eliminates the manual process of saving documents and ensures that all team members have access to the most up-to-date versions of the filings. Looking ahead, Walters hints at future integration points between vLex and iManage, emphasizing the potential for generative AI to help law firms differentiate their services and meet client expectations. He sees Vincent AI as a secure bridge between generative AI and a firm's internal work product, enabling them to leverage their knowledge assets without the need for expensive, in-house foundation models. It was major news April 4 when the legal research and technology companies Fastcase and vLex announced their merger, creating a single entity that they say now has the world's largest subscriber base of lawyers and law firms and a legal research library of more than 1 billion documents from more than 100 countries.  It is a deal that could reshape the legal tech landscape on a global basis and potentially even threaten the longstanding legal research duopoly of Westlaw and LexisNexis. So what does it mean for the companies? What does it mean for their customers? And what does it mean for the legal market more broadly? To explore these questions and more, LawNext host Bob Ambrogi is joined by the four founders of the two companies:  Lluis Faus, cofounder and CEO of vLex and now global CEO of the combined entity, known as the vLex Group.  Angel Faus, cofounder and chief technology officer of vLex. Ed Walters, cofounder and former CEO of Fastcase and now chief strategy officer of vLex. Phil Rosenthal, cofounder and former president of Fastcase and now chief growth officer of vLex. With the news last week of the merger of legal research companies Fastcase and vLex, it seemed a good time to revisit our 2019 interview with the founders of Fastcase, Ed Walters and Phil Rosenthal. The occasion of this interview was the company's 20th anniversary, and we recorded it live, on the exhibit hall floor, at the annual conference of the American Association of Law Libraries.  In this interview, Walters and Rosenthal recount how, as two young associates at the law firm Covington & Burling, they came to found Fastcase in 1999. They also recall some of their greatest successes and worst mistakes over the years as founders, and offer their predictions for the future of Fastcase. How do their predictions in 2019 stand up in 2023? Well, you'll have to listen to find out the answer to that. Although Fastcase started as a legal research company, in recent years, it had diversified and expanded into areas such as legal analytics, legal publishing, legal news, and even legal document automation. That diversification had already started when we spoke to Walters and Rosenthal in 2019. The year before, they had acquired the legal dockets and analytics company Docket Alarm, and, as you will hear, they were already seeing analytics as a key component of their future growth.   Thank You To Our Sponsors This episode of LawNext is generously made possible by our sponsors. In this episode we talk about the weather. But only for a minute. Mostly we're going to talk about the use of big data in the practice of law. There is a reason IBM acquired the digital assets of The Weather Channel, and it's not because they are climate nerds. They bought it to put weather data to work to “operationalize [the] understanding of the impact of weather on business outcomes.” Think about the economic impact of snowstorms, hurricanes, and even less dramatic weather conditions, or the impact on the durability of manufacturing or building materials as temperatures rise or fall outside the norm.  While we all crave meteorological precision, we also crave precision when making legal and business decisions. Clients ask questions like these all the time: What is our case worth? What size award will we get? Where should I file? Will the judge grant summary judgment? Should I even bring this suit?  Lawyers will draw on experience to offer their best advice, providing ranges followed by caveats and usually preceded by the most lawyerly of lawyer answers: “It depends.”  As my guest points out, lawyers also get business-related questions. Business-related answers may begin with "it depends," but must end with a number. When a CEO asks how much revenue your project will generate, "more" is not the answer they're looking for. I know. I've tried. Lawyers who seek greater precision in their predictions can take comfort in the increasing sophistication of analytical tools that can evaluate massive troves of data and account for myriad variables. Not only are we seeing advances in machine learning, artificial intelligence, and language processing, but there is greater access to important litigation-related data – BIG DATA – than ever before. Using new technologies to comb through millions of records – combined with an attorney's insights – cannot only sharpen their predictive capabilities, but it can help them build, defend, and resolve cases. For insights on the past, present and future of legal guidance and analysis, listen to my interview with Ed Walters, co-founder and CEO of our partners on this podcast, Fastcase, the legal research and software company whose divisions include Fastcase Full Court Press (publishing), Law Street Media (legal news), Docket Alarm (docket tools), and NextChapter (software).  An entrepreneur, writer and professor, Ed brings his experience advising global Fortune 500 tech and pharma companies and sports leagues, serving in the White House on media affairs and speechwriting, and contributing to several major newspapers and journals. Ed is an adjunct law professor at Georgetown and Cornell universities. He is also a self-described "weather nerd," which explains my tortured introduction.  This podcast is the audio companion to the Journal on Emerging Issues in Litigation. The Journal is a collaborative project between HB Litigation Conferences and the Fastcase legal research family, which includes Full Court Press, Law Street Media, and Docket Alarm. Colin McCarthy of Legal Operators on Building a LegalOps Community

The legal operations community was barely nascent a decade ago. Now there is a booming LegalOps profession and a number of professional associations have sprouted up to help the community learn and collaborate. Legal Operators is one of those communities. We asked the founder of Legal Operators, Colin McCarthy, to come on the show and talk about why he took a small legal ops community that started with a few people doing TED-Talk style presentations over drinks, to a community of thousands. Legal Operators produces online learning programs, a list of legal operations software and services, job board, and an innovation hub in order to support the growing legal operations profession. Recently, Legal Operators created a magazine with the planned distribution in the tens of thousands. While this may seem outside of what you would think a technology-forward operations would do, McCarthy says he believes in doing the unexpected, and providing the best platform for the distribution of knowledge and information. Even if that means going "old-school" from time to time. Check out the online version of the Legal Operators Magazine here. In September, Legal Operators is hosting the Summit By the Sea at Half Moon Bay, California. The September 14-16, 2022 curated, in-person event is designed for 100 legal ops professionals to gather together and share in conversation, networking, and best practices exchanges. There are a few seats still available. Sonja Ebron and Ed Walters Collaborate on Courtroom5 and Fastcase to Help Pro Se Litigants Access Justice

We all know that it takes some "outside of the box thinking" to help improve the legal system in the United States, especially when it comes to Pro Se litigants. Courtroom5 CEO and co-founder Sonja Ebron does exactly that with her startup focused on guiding Pro Se litigants through complex court processes. Ed Walters, CEO and co-founder of Fastcase wants the legal industry to stop trying so hard to reinforce that "box." Together, Ebron and Walters are creating a process to help litigants access and navigate the court system through a combination of case process instructions, legal information, Artificial Intelligence, and collaboration with legal professionals. Eventually, Ebron would like to see the courts themselves leverage Courtroom5's abilities to help those seeking legal recourse. Walters stresses that the "North Star" of legal practice should be the wellbeing of clients. In a system where according to The World Justice Project, over 75% of legal needs go unmet, and some 80% of citizens seeking judicial action do so without the use of legal professionals. Part of that solution lies with the courts and the need to focus on the ability "to filter out people who need lawyers helping people who don't." Once again, this is not about replacing lawyers with robots, or encouraging Pro Se litigants to not seek legal assistance. Courtroom5 and Fastcase are seeking ways to improve the overall process of placing the right information in front of litigants, at the right time. Even if those instructions are to highly recommend seeking legal counsel.
