They did find the shooter with the murder weapon and his prints were on the gun. He was also the victim of ineffective assistance of counsel, as Michael wanted to go to trial, but his lawyer said no. The ringleaders of the crime were given a 20 year deal. Gaines got LWOP. In today’s episode Jamie and Massiel sit down with another known podcaster in the oil and gas space, Michael Gaines, aka “ The Voice”, on NOV Today Podcast. Many people know Michael as an expert communicator and dynamic public speaker, with 11 years of experience in Marketing, Product Development and Branding at NOV. What many people don’t know is the leap of faith Michael took when offered his first position at NOV. Michael was a A student in College, student body President and checked all the boxes after graduating to land a great job. Reality set in after his first role in outside sales selling shipping services. He was cold calling, knocking on doors and felt like he was annoying people more than selling to them. He ended up leaving the shipping service company and going to work for a temp agency. Where he was stacking floor samples, he thought to himself, “ This must be what it’s like to be a classically trained chef and be asked to make french fries”. During this time Michael learned many life lessons that he shares on the podcast. After a few years of not being able to find a stable job, Michael received a call from a woman at NOV that he knew from years ago. She remembered Michael from college and thought he was the perfect candidate for a role they were looking to fill, Product Line Champion - Drill Bits. Michael said, YES with no hesitation but he knew nothing about drill bits. This is when his story gets interesting. Let’s just say Wikipedia and Google is your friend. Michael walks you through what he did to prepare for the interview and how he ended up becoming the Product Line Champion with no experience, knowledge or even understanding of what a Drill Bit was, outside of his internet search, at the time. Michael grew into his role at NOV becoming a trusted resource and Manager. He did not pretend to know everything and was never scared to ask questions. He moved on to take on a role as a Global Product Line Champion, after many months of asking for this position. At the time the role did not exist but Michael saw a pain point within the company that lacked communication between two regions. He talks about how he approached management diplomatically in order to eventually convince them to let him oversee the operation. He is a great example of paving your own path. Even though he works for a large company he was able to still be an entrepreneur within NOV. Many of his roles were created for him or he created for himself. When he found a pain point instead of complaining about it, he asked to be put into a role to take it head on. Listen in to find out how he ended up becoming “ The Voice” for NOV since 2017. After winning their 2nd DCI world championship in 1995 with their show ‘The Planets,’ The Cavaliers drum & bugle corps fell to 4th in 1996 and dropped to 7th place with their 1997 production, “The Firebird.” The lowest the corps had finished since finishing 8th in 1984. The Cavies then moved back up to 4th place in 1998 and then received the bronze medal in 1999 with their show, “Classical Innovations.” That 1999 show also saw The Chicago Cavaliers taking home their fourth High Percussion Award in the history of the corps, all in the 1990s. In the year 2000… a design team came together that would come to dominate DCI for the better part of the next decade. Led by program coordinator Scott Koter, Michael Gaines designed the drill, Richard Saucedo composed & arranged the brass book, and Bret Kuhn & Erik Johnson composed & arranged the battery & front-ensemble books. The 2000 production, “Niagara Falls,” featured music from and inspired by Niagara Falls by Michael Daugherty, and Waves, from Soundings by Cindy McTee as well as original music by Saucedo, Kuhn, & Johnson. The 2000 season ended with The Cavaliers of Rosemount, IL winning their 3rd DCI world championship, in a tie with The Cadets, as well as winning the John Brazale Best Visual Performance Award, the George Zingali Best Color Guard Performance Award, and the Fred Sanford Best Percussion Performance Award. Joining me today are future DCI Hall of Famers Bret Kuhn and Erik Johnson. Bret served as Caption Head and Percussion Arranger for the Cavaliers who won 6 World Championships and 5 High Percussion Awards during his tenure. From 1995 to 2005 and 2008 to 2010, Erik Johnson was on the instructional staff serving on the design team as the front ensemble arranger and coordinator. On this episode of Musicbook, we discuss The Cavaliers’ 2000 production, “Niagara Falls.” --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/sketchbookpodcast/message

In 2002, The Cavaliers went undefeated for the season and won their third DCI title in a row, a feat that had only been accomplished by the Garfield Cadets in 1983, 1984, & 1985, with a record high score of 99.15 From 2000 to 2002, the Green Machine took home caption awards for Best Color Guard in 2000 & 2002, Best General Effect in 2001 and 2002, Best Visual Performance in 2000 and 2002, Best Brass Performance in 2002, and Best Percussion in 2000. When it came time to design their 2003 production, The Chicago Cavaliers once again turned to original music. The 2000 production, 'Niagara Falls,' had existing source material to build and work from, and 'Four Corners,' the 2001 production, seemed to have some subtle and not-so-subtle musical influences. The 2002 production, 'Frameworks,' seemed to be all from the mind of Richard Saucedo. The 2003 DCI season ended with The Cavies placing 2nd with a score of 97.250 Joining me today is DCI Hall of Famer Michael Gaines who was the drill designer and visual coordinator for The Cavaliers from 1998-2011, and served on the design team for all 7 of their Drum Corps International World Championship titles On this, the first episode of Dotbook, we discuss the Cavaliers Drum & Bugle Corps 2003 production, 'Spin Cycle.' --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/sketchbookpodcast/message
