Life is short. We don't know when God will call us home. In today's episode, we take 5 minutes to report on the death of Mr. Michael Gill (56) who was brutally gunned down in a carjacking incident by a 28-year-old in Washington D.C. Tomorrow is not promised so what can you do today to make sure the people you leave behind are taken care of? Death doesn't have an age requirement. But God has a plan.

Washington, D.C., recently experienced a profound tragedy involving a former Trump administration official. Michael Gill, once the backbone of the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) as its chief of staff, died following a violent carjacking incident in the city, according to a recent report. On the fateful evening, Gill was in his car, parked on K Street NW just around 5:45 p.m. Suddenly, an assailant intruded into his vehicle, resulting in the tragic shooting. Gill's long-held service to his country ended abruptly on that 900 block of K Street. Artell Cunningham, a 28-year-old man, has been identified by the police as the alleged perpetrator. In the wake of the attack on Gill, Cunningham significantly escalated his criminal activities, targeting another vehicle within an hour, law enforcement officials disclosed. His attempted theft did not end with that one car. He advanced towards bystanders, generating fear and demanding their car keys. Among his targets was Alberto Vasquez, Jr., 35, whom Cunningham allegedly killed during his carjacking attempts at the intersection of 3rd and N Streets Northeast.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The third Earl of Shaftesbury (1671-1713) was a troubled soul – negative, misanthropic, and deeply troubled by his negativity and misanthropy. In A Philosophy of Beauty: Shaftesbury on Nature, Virtue, and Art (Princeton University Press, 2022), Michael Gill shows how Shaftesbury's efforts to work on himself resulted in his becoming one of the first philosophers writing in English to develop an aesthetic theory. Shaftesbury conceived of beauty as order or harmony exemplified by wild nature just as it is created by God, in sharp contrast to the prevailing seventeenth-century European view that nature was sinful and needed to be altered for human purposes before it could be aesthetically valuable. Gill, who is professor of philosophy at the University of Edinburgh, explains how Shaftesbury argued for seeing our lives as works of art, and how he responded to critics who claimed that admiring beauty was something only rich lords like himself could afford to do. Instead, Shaftesbury claimed, even the “lowly mechanic” is inherently invested in good craftsmanship and in making himself a good person.

At long last, our first interview! This man has been mentioned many times before on the podcast, and has played a significant role in both our lives... Michael Gill did have a glittering career, as a lawyer, and in various other engagements, but to us he is cherished more as a source of wisdom, companionship and guidance. He is a man of vocation and dedication, a source of joy and community to all those he encounters. He listens but tries never to judge. He thinks deeply, and often throws around words like 'Helicopter!', 'Interconnectedness,' 'Not bloody siloism!', 'Peace and Joy' and of course, 'Just Be.' He's always there for those who need him, and has a sharp and beautiful sense of humour. Though he'll say this is no good for his ego, I must say, we consider him to be quite ahead of his time, and he defies almost every stereotype you'd associate with someone of his age and standing in society. Affectionately dubbed 'Gilly' by those close to him, we wanted to commemorate and capture some of his beautiful insights in an episode. This is dedicated not just to our dear friend, but to the intimate group of Gilly's companions who cherish him as much as we do. Here is a man who plants the seeds.
Michael Gill, Executive Director of the Air Transport Action Group, Director of Environment at the International Air Transport Association and soon to be ICAO's Director of Legal Affairs and External Relations, speaks about the pushes and pulls of expat life, shares how a profound study abroad experience changed his future path, how travel can create a greater empathy necessary for dealing with global crises like the ones facing us now, and what we can learn about life living a la francaise.
