New Zealand beekeeper Sir Edmund Hillary and Nepalese sherpa Tenzing Norgay became the first team to summit Mount Everest on May 29, 1953. Their historic feat turned the pair into an international symbol of adventure, courage and teamwork. Joining Melissa for this special episode of Passport to Everywhere are the duo's sons, Peter Hillary and Jamling Tanzing Norgay, who have carried on their families' legacy. Peter Hillary is an author, motivational speaker, expedition leader and mountaineer, and he first ascended Everest in 1990. Since then, he's completed the Seven Summits, the highest mountains on each of the seven continents. Jamling Tenzing Norgay is a climber, mountain guide, author and motivational speaker. He became the star of the IMAX documentary Everest when he summited the mountain in 1996. While on location for a film shoot in Nepal for Indagare's partnership with Bank of America, the two spoke with Melissa and shared stories passed down from their fathers' daring expeditions. They reveal insights into their fathers' background: Tenzing grew up raising yaks and ran away from his village to answer what he describes as the “calling of the Mountain;” for Edmund “it was love at first sight” on a school trip in the outdoors. They explore inspiring lessons of leadership, the impact of tourism on Mount Everest and the work of their foundations that give back to Nepalese communities. Plus, tune in to discover firsthand accounts at Buckingham Palace, Jamling's dangerous experience while filming Everest and their advice for becoming a great climber. It is not the mountain we conquer, but ourselves.- Sir Edmund Hillary
Today, joined by Dr Matt Slavin, we delve into the question: "Would you erase your trauma if you could?" Exploring both big and little traumas, we acknowledge their impact on shaping us. Trauma isn't just about life-threatening events but also repeated feelings of betrayal or neglect. Our experiences, good and bad, mold us, propelling us towards achievements or influencing our relationships. Trauma often dictates our choices and behaviors, affecting how we navigate life's challenges.Through stories like Sir Edmund Hillary's, we see how past wounds can drive us to remarkable feats. Yet, trauma can also trap us in toxic patterns, blurring our perception of reality and hindering growth. Acceptance becomes pivotal, acknowledging the past while embracing the present. It's about radical acceptance—recognizing what we cannot change and focusing on self-improvement.In a study, 99.9% of respondents, despite enduring severe traumas, opted not to erase them, understanding that doing so would alter their entire life's trajectory. It's a testament to the complexity of human experience, where trauma isn't solely a burden but also a catalyst for growth. By embracing our multifaceted selves and seeking love and safety, we embark on the healing journey, empowering ourselves to choose connections that nurture our well-being. Ultimately, we are observers of our lives, wielding the power to shape our narratives and find solace in love and acceptance.Contact details for Matt: https://www.linkedin.com/in/drmattslavin/Support the showSet yourself up for relationship success and get the best marriage advice. There's something incredibly humbling about standing at the foot of the world's tallest peak, feeling the bite of the cold Himalayan air and knowing you've walked the same path as legends. We felt that awe with Rob Bruce of Got to Get Out, who joined us to recount tales of guiding groups through the trials of Everest Base Camp during winter's sting. His stories aren't just about the physical endurance required to brave such extreme conditions, but also about the mental fortitude that comes from pushing past boundaries and emerging, transformed on the other side. This episode gives an insider's look into the life-altering effects these journeys have on those who dare, as well as the reverence for Sir Edmund Hillary's legacy. Rob tells us how he traded boardroom buzzers for the serene silence of snowy peaks, and how the Sherpa people's culture and heritage are as integral to the Everest experience as the climb itself. We also discuss the importance of fostering a love for the outdoors in children and the role that modern technology plays in shaping—or inhibiting—the spirit of exploration. So join us for this soul-stirring conversation that celebrates the power of adventure to redefine our limits and the enduring call of the wild that beckons us. https://www.facebook.com/gottogetout See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
It's 70 years since one of the most extraordinary achievements occurred. This accomplishment is spoken of, remembered, and often used as the gauge of success. And so, it is no surprise that the name of this one man is carved indelibly into history. In his home country, he's considered a hero and has been voted the most admired person in the nation. He even has a commemorative five-stamp series to honour his status and achievements. He is the best-known New Zealander in the world. But it's not just his achievement as a mountaineer, the conqueror of Mount Everest, the first man, along with Tenzing Norgay to climb to the top of the highest mountain in the world that he is honoured. It's because Edmund Hillary showed us how an ordinary life can become a truly extraordinary one. He has shown us that greatness is possible.

Why climb Mount Everest? " Because it's there". The words of explorer George Mallory in New York in 1922. Show Notes: The book, The Soul's Code, offers a way to see thru children's misbehaviors for the deeper meaning behind them, i.e., see the oak tree when all you have in front of you is an acorn. Too many kids get mislabeled & misdiagnosed because our lens is so short-term oriented; also the medical & psychological communities are so pathology & negative & deficit focused. Children's behaviors reveal something positive about the child, instead of seeing developmental problems, look for the beauty & meaning in what you see and then love and accept your kids for who they are. Dr. Jordan shares many stories of his patients and eminent people to illustrate how an important part of our job as parents is to create an environment for children's soul and destiny to flourish. This includes stories about Gandhi, Picasso, pioneering geneticist Barbara McClintock, Woody Allen, Painter Benjamin West, architect Frank Lloyd Wright, climber Sir Edmund Hillary, primatologists Jane Goodall and Brute Mary Galdikas, and actress Betty Davis. We are exploring conversations around what hasn't worked, because there are beautiful lessons from what failed, to help us shape what will work! I love when Sir Edmund Hillary says “it is not the mountain we conquer, but ourselves”, because sometimes, we are the ones standing in our own way. Take some time to think of your own Productivity Fails, and see ways you can outgrow your former self. Be Better, Do Better!

International Everest Day is annually celebrated to commemorate the first ascent of Mt Everest on May 29, 1953, by Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzin Norgay Sherpa. While you were trekking up the snow-covered mountains of the Himalayas, you saw a large footprint you couldn't explain... you heard calls that echoed across the peaks... maybe it's a sign of oxygen deprivation, maybe it's a sign of the abominable snowman... the legendary Yeti! A staple of Himalayan and Buddhist folklore, the Yeti has evaded and entranced the eyes of everyone from locals to the conqueror of Mount Everest himself: Sir Edmund Hillary. Brought to you by our very own (self-appointed) Doctor of Cryptozoology, Becky Johnson, PhD, we explore the early mysteries and expeditions involving the Yeti in our very first multi-part cryptid episode!

This week Beau and Carl chat about the various attempts over the years to climb Mount Everest. From George Mallory and Andrew Irvine's first attempts in the 1920's, to Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay's ultimately successful expedition in 1953, as well as other famous tales from the mountain and what the experience is like in the present day.
On this Classic episode of The Sofa King Podcast, we climb the Mount Everest of podcast topics to look for the tales and truths behind the Yeti. The Yeti, the Abominable Snowman, the Mi-Go, the Yeren; these are all apparently the same creature: a humanoid beast with feet like a man (smaller than a “Bigfoot”) who has been seen in the Himalayan mountains for centuries. Their gods and mythology tie back to this creature, and sightings and folk lore amount local Sherpas are vibrant and updated. So why should anyone care about a mythological beast called a Yeti? Well, for one thing, a lot of pretty high rolling explorers saw them, claimed to saw them, or brought back evidence of them. Sir Edmund Hillary went on multiple expeditions to find this creature and even brought back evidence. Over the past hundred years, public calls have gone out to find proof. From oil millionaire Tom Slick to a British newspaper and even Oxford University, they all sent people or paid for evidence surrounding this. The Chinese government even has an official department that is dedicated to looking for the Wild Man of China. So, with all of this research and folklore, what has been found? Well, a lot of tracks that either come from bears or can't be identified. DNA that often matches mountain creatures but sometimes comes back as a mystery. Sometimes, it even came back as prehistoric bears from the Pleistocene era. What is the difference between a Bigfoot and a Yeti? Why is a Yeti considered to be more dangerous? Why did the actor Jimmy Stewart help smuggle a Yeti hand out of Tibet and into London? Listen, laugh, learn. Jimmy Steward, Relic Hunter: https://www.atlasobscura.com/articles/saga-of-the-yeti-hand
Mt Everest is a death trap. Everything about the mountain is designed to kill you. So why are so many people going up there? Why do we ignore the very real and very dangerous narratives that are right in our face.
29 years before Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay summited Everest, George Mallory and Andrew Irvine attempted the same. They made one last attempt but tragedy struck and they never made it back down the mountain - for many years neither of their bodies were found and when one was, it only provided more questions than answers. Did they make it?
