On 14th March 2025 this segment of Rights, Rorts and Rants went to air. Mike Holland briefly covered three high profile whistleblowers who have been generally subjected to detrimental treatment, financial ruin, jail time and psychological suffering at the hands of their employers and the media. The ill-treatment directed at employees who bring cases involving wrongdoing into public light has led Senators Jacqui Lambie and David Pocock to address this by sponsoring a Senate bill on 11 February 2025 namely the "Whistleblower Protection Authority Bill 2025 (No. 2)". Dr Helen Haines MP and Andrew Wilkie MP also introduced the bill which will, if passed, establish an independent body with the power to enforce whistleblower protections and safeguard whistleblowers, among other things. The bill has been referred to a committee with reporting back on 29 August 2025.The radio show was first broadcast on Radio Blue Mountains 89.1 FM on 14 March 2025 by Blue Mountains Unions & Community and presented by Fran Dyson. Jerry Ouellette, former Ontario Minister of Natural Resources, and Mike Holland, who held the same position in New Brunswick, reveal how they navigated government systems to achieve meaningful conservation victories.Jerry's innovative classroom hatchery program stands as a testament to creative problem-solving—targeting schools along waterways to transform potential polluters into stream stewards. By involving students in raising and releasing rainbow trout, he created both environmental improvements and a generation of conservation-minded citizens. Today, tens of thousands of rainbow trout return to these streams annually, a testament to how small, strategic interventions can yield remarkable results.Mike Holland approached his ministerial role with similar pragmatism. After founding the Canadian Wild Turkey Federation, he leveraged his position to establish New Brunswick's first-ever turkey hunt—defying bureaucrats who had repeatedly deemed it impossible. His department became the only financially self-sustaining branch of government by recognizing conservation's economic potential alongside its biological importance. The conversation shifts to the Canadian Wild Turkey Federation's remarkable journey from "two guys in a half-ton truck" to a national organization with chapters across the country. What makes this story particularly fascinating is how chapters thrive even in provinces without turkey hunting seasons, demonstrating a commitment to conservation that transcends specific species or activities. Their youth "hoot and shoot" programs teach comprehensive outdoor education, producing conservationists who now work professionally in natural resources.Whether through classroom hatcheries, turkey habitat restoration, or youth mentorship, both leaders demonstrate that effective conservation requires connecting people with nature in meaningful ways. Their shared experiences offer a masterclass in turning passion into policy and obstacles into opportunities.Ready to join the conservation movement? The threat of weak companies not being able to pay their debts is rising as interest rates stay elevated. “On high yield and loans, I do think that risks are growing that you could see a reset in spreads,” Meghan Robson, head of US credit strategy at BNP Paribas, tells Bloomberg News' James Crombie and Bloomberg Intelligence's Mike Holland. “The obvious trigger for us would be that debate of rate hikes coming back,” Robson says in the latest Credit Edge podcast. BNP favors shorting some single B and CCC rated issuers whose credit spreads have tightened alot. “If rate cuts do seem to be pushed off more and more, I think there could be a sell off there,” said Robson. In addition, BNP favors bonds rated BBB, flags high-yield debt in the media sector as an opportunity, and expresses caution on the financial sector, given the likelihood of an earnings drag if the Federal Reserve doesn't ease. “The biggest risk we're watching is a red wave,” says Robson, when asked about the impact of the US presidential election on credit markets. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Stephanie Goodman talks with Joanne Silverman from FetchACure.org which is a 501 ©(3) non-profit organization focused on improving the quality of life for our pets. Their vision is simple: A common. Helping People. Helping Pets.Watch the original video HERE!In July 2006, Hannah Holland was diagnosed with nasal osteosarcoma of the skull. Little information about her condition was available, and what information her parent, Mike Holland, could find was hard to understand. So, Mike teamed up with Ryan Traylor and Tonie Stevens to create FETCH, a non-profit designed to raise awareness, to educate, and provide pet owners greater access to information about pet cancer, senior care, and treatment options. With Hannah's prognosis of only two months left, Mike set out to do as much as he could to help Hannah fight this disease through various treatment measures. Hannah fought against the odds and lost her battle two years later. Her spirit lives on in the mission of FETCH.Through community outreach by way of events, campaigns and fundraisers, FETCH a Cure is working to promote the need to help pets live long, healthy lives. FETCH continually works to raise awareness and further education about pet cancer, detection and treatment and senior care and aging issues. We provide financial aid to families unable to bear the cost of the life-saving treatments for their pets that have been diagnosed with cancer through the Companions in Crisis program. FETCH continues to work towards providing more accessible treatment options for all within our community.Through the Pixie's Pen Pals program, FETCH is helping rescue dogs and inmates in Virginia correctional centers earn a second chance. By working cooperatively and bonding with the animals, the inmates learn responsibility, patience, tolerance and life-long skills, while the trained dogs find life-long homes.Tune into the Furbabies Podcast YouTube Channel at http://FurbabiesPodcast.tv.Got a question or suggestion for Stephanie and the show? Many Australians are still trying to rebuild their lives after fires and floods in recent years, further complicated by COVID. It takes government support to both mitigate the potential impact of these disasters and to help communities recover afterwards. In the mountains we've seen an explosive increase in plant growth - fuel - and are expecting a dry winter, creating a dangerous risk in the upcoming fire season. This is further exacerbated by lengthening fire seasons caused by climate change. How well prepared are we for future fire seasons? And what was the effect when the Blue Mountains and other non-Coalition electorates missed out on grants from the state government's Bushfire Local Economic Recovery funds? Speakers are:Kim de Govrik, an Organiser for the Public Service Association with remote fire fighting experience in his former job with National Parks. Mike Holland, lawyer since 1979 and a law lecturer who retired from legal practice and academia in 2016. Mike is a BMUC member and a commenter on issues of government integrity and corruption on Rights, Rorts and Rants, Radio Blue Mountains 89.1FM. Mark Greenhill OAM, a Blue Mountains City Councillor for 20 years, ten of which he has served as Mayor, brings a Council perspective. He was Mayor during both the 2013 fires when 210 local houses and other buildings were destroyed, and during the Black Summer fires, when 2,448 homes, including 90 in the Blue Mountains, were destroyed across NSW. FETCH a Cure was founded by Mike Holland, Tonie Stevens, and Ryan Traylor after Mike's dog was diagnosed with osteosarcoma back in 2006. At that time there were few resources for dog cancer in the Richmond, VA area. Since its humble beginnings as a back-room operation in a catering business, FETCH a Cure now provides continuing education opportunities for veterinarians, funding for dog cancer treatment within the Virginia-Maryland-DC area, and has even bought a building that now hosts both a veterinary oncology practice complete with a radiation room and a separate holistic veterinary practice. One of the things that makes FETCH unique is that the organization asks that owners who benefit from their cancer treatment funding volunteer their time to help other dogs and owners get the assistance they need. Volunteering could consist of helping out at an event, hosting a fundraiser, or even delivering pamphlets to veterinary practices to spread the word. FETCH a Cure currently only serves the Virginia, Maryland, and Washington DC area of the US, but they are looking to expand. They also have support groups that are open to dog lovers anywhere. With all the elements of a political thriller, this episode investigates the intrigue, derangement, and plain stupidity, of the origins and workings of the Transport Assets Holding Entity (TAHE). As Mike also reports, the governments' plan to commercialise the entire transport system has landed it in deep trouble - from the Australian Bureau of Statistics, the previous Auditor General of New South Wales, other governmental agencies and political commentators, who have described the scheme as "financial trickery" and a mammoth waste of taxpayers money. When Science Speaks
Bridging the Gap Between Science and Policy, with Dr. Mike Holland - Ep #53

When Science Speaks

Dr. Mike Holland is the Vice Chancellor for Science Policy and Research Strategies at the University of Pittsburgh, which supports cross-disciplinary research and coordinates the University’s response to research policy opportunities. He is also responsible for creating major research initiatives and maintaining the University research funding.  Dr. Holland has previous experience in government including a position as the senior advisor and Staff Director at the Office of the Undersecretary for Science at the United States Department of Energy. Policymaking is one of the key ways that scientific research and discovery finds its way into the public sphere. It is not always an easy, direct path, and needs the participation of scientists and those with technical training to improve the process. Dr. Mike Holland has a successful career in science policy, working with government, universities, and the Center for Urban Science and Progress. Dr. Holland earned his PhD in Chemistry from the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill. Prior to that, he earned a BS in Electrical Engineering and Chemistry, both from North Carolina State University.  What You’ll Hear On This Episode of When Science Speaks [2:47] How Dr. Holland found his way into the policy world [8:54] The story of how Vern Ehlers was the first research physicist to be elected to Congress [15:22] Dr. Holland’s experience working with Science Outside the Lab [20:00] The 3 primary roles scientists can play in policymaking [29:15] How Dr. Holland’s scientific training informs his work in policymaking [34:01] Dr. Holland’s work with the Schwartzman Scholarship Program [39:50] What Dr. Holland is working on right now Connect with Mike Holland, PhD LinkedIn for Mike Holland, PhD Bio for Mike Holland, PhD Science Outside the Lab The example of Vern Ehlers The path into policymaking for scientists has not always been an easy one. Vern Ehlers was the first physicist to serve in congress in 1993. As Dr. Holland points out in this week’s episode, this unusual path led many people to want to know how he did it. So how did Vern Ehlers make the jump from being science faculty in a university to serving in the Congress of the United States? As Dr. Holland talks about, Vern Ehlers wanted to bring his expertise in science to his state representative in Congress, which happened to be Gerald Ford, who later went on to become President of the United States. Becoming a scientific advisor for a future President planted a seed in Dr. Holland that grew into political aspirations. After building relationships in Congress, Vern Ehlers saw that he could make a difference himself, and that led to his eventual time as a US Congressman. Bringing Science Outside of the Lab Working in a lab requires focus and dedication, and is important work regardless of which branch of science is being studied. One of the most important aspects of scientific study is the ability to bring what is learned in the lab to the world at large. Policy-making is one avenue that science interfaces with the general public. Scientific training doesn’t always show how this can be accomplished, so what can scientists do to better understand how to bring their work to the world? Dr. Holland has worked with Science Outside the Lab, which was created to help PhD students in the natural sciences get their work to the public through policymaking. The program outlines potential jobs outside of the labs that PhD graduates can consider getting into to help facilitate scientific policy in the real world. Courses on Science Policy are rare in educational programs, so Science Outside the Lab helps students get a feel of the world outside of laboratory life.
