This is Stephen Schmidt from the Gazette digital news desk and I'm here with your update for Tuesday, August 16. The great weather continues! According to the National Weather Service it will be mostly sunny with a high near 78 degrees in the Cedar Rapids area on Tuesday. On Tuesday night it will be mostly clear, with a low of around 58 degrees. Coe College on Monday unveiled a new dean of diversity, equity and inclusion following controversy last fall. In addition to serving as the private Cedar Rapids college's lead diversity officer, Donald Jaamal will function as its Title IX coordinator — a dual role making him part of Coe's “senior staff,” a stipulation Coe community members included among their demands issued in November. Jaamal — the fourth diversity officer in Coe history, after it established an Office of Diversity and Inclusion in 2015 — was hired following an extensive national search, according to a Coe news release Monday. He started work Aug. 8. Coe — last fall and in the months since — has fhttps://www.thegazette.com/higher-education/even-if-case-closed-coe-college-remains-focus-of-diversity-questions/ (aced questions and criticism )over its handling of diversity, equity and inclusion issues after former trustee Darryl Banks resigned over a closed-door dispute among board members leading up to their selection of new Coe President David Hayes. Banks, a Coe alum who spent more than 40 years on the board, said he raised diversity-related concerns with the presidential search but that a fellow trustee called him a liar. Banks sought a reprimand, apology and a retraction, but never got them. The historic Guaranty Bank building and Old World Theater property is now listed for sale as efforts to transform the buildings into two hotels and restaurants as a “cornerstone” project in the heart of downtown Cedar Rapids have faltered, the potential developer said Monday. “That one specifically does not appear to be on the horizon,” Mike Whalen, president and chief executive officer of the Heart of America Group, said of his proposal that called for an approximately $50 million investment to restore the buildings on most of the block at Third Street and Third Avenue SE. “ … In the end, there was maybe a difference of opinion with the owner as to the value of the property that could not be resolved.” GLD Commercial lists the selling price at $3.1 million for the property, which was built in 1895. Adam Gibbs, vice president of GLD, said the property has been marketed for about 90 days locally and regionally, and there is a “fair amount of interested parties” so far considering some kind of historic tax credit redevelopment.  The Linn County Correctional Center has adjusted its agreement for housing federal inmates in an effort to address deputy complaints and resignations about overtime work at the jail. Linn County Sheriff Brian Gardner said that because the jail has been short staffed, deputies have been required to work overtime to meet the minimum number of corrections officers required for each shift. The number of officers needed each day depends on the number of inmates. “They have been complaining about the overtime that they've been required to work. In fact, we've lost some deputies, very good deputies, to other agencies because of the amount of overtime that we're requiring them to work,” Gardner said. One cause for the overtime has been requirements for the federal inmates held there, which usually constitute one-fourth to one-third of the jail's total population. As part of the jail's contract with the U.S. Marshals Service and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, two deputies are required to accompany federal inmates when they leave the jail for things like a doctor's appointment or to go to the hospital. To address the problem, Gardner reached a new agreement with the U.S. Marshals and ICE. Federal agencies will be required to transport their detainees to and from scheduled medical...

In the fourth, and final, episode of our podseries on the 2003-04 Friars, the players, staff, and cohosts reflect on the challenges Providence faced during its season-ending losing streak. We also take a broader look at what this season meant for Providence basketball at the time, and the individuals who helped PC reach great heights during the season. We would like to thank Bob Walsh, Donnie McGrath, Sheiku Kabba, Marcus Douthit, and Ryan Gomes for not only participating in this podcast, but for their candor. Each of our guests were terrific and we truly appreciate it. The Friar Pod Series was hosted by Bill Ricci and Kevin Farrahar. Produced and Edited by Mike Whalen. There is so much to unpack in this episode. Fresh off of a heartbreaking overtime loss to Texas, Providence suffered an unthinkable defeat at the buzzer to Rutgers before bouncing back with six straight wins. During that stretch the Friars knocked off fourth-ranked UConn on the road... and Jim Calhoun provided a press conference for the ages. Check out this episode to hear more about how Providence entered March winners of 12 of their previous 14 games and ranked twelfth in the country. The stars of that team will take you through an impressive run through the Big East, but ultimately a season that ended in disappointment. They'll share their thoughts on how a team that had been so resilient and dominant throughout the season ultimately closed out the year on a four game losing streak. It didn't take long for Providence to put the rest of the country on notice to begin the 2003-04 season. The Friars opened the season by winning eight of their first nine games, including an exhilarating victory over Illinois in the 2003 Jimmy V Classic at Madison Square Garden. During this episode, Billy Ricci and Kevin Farrahar continue their conversations with Ryan Gomes, Marcus Douthit, Sheiku Kabba, Donnie McGrath, and Bob Walsh. They discuss the non-conference portion of the schedule, which included the thrilling win over Illinois, taking out an eventual Elite 8 team in Alabama at home, defeating Pete Gillen at Virginia, playing at URI for the first time in over 30 years, and the 8-1 start that set up a classic against Rick Barnes and Texas. Friar fans will relieve one of the truly great nights in Dunkin Donuts Center history in a behind-the-scenes look at the wild game against the Longhorns. Friarbasketball.com and the Friar Podcast have partnered to bring Providence fans a special look back at the 2003-04 season. This four-part podcast series will chronicle the Friars' rise from middle-of-the-pack Big East team to one that proved it could play with anyone in the country. The ‘04 Friars are most remembered for being on the cusp of a Big East championship and a potentially deep NCAA Tournament run (they were ranked 12th in the country with a 20-5 record heading into March) before the unthinkable happened -- they lost their final four games of the season. In episode one of the series, listeners will hear from All-American Ryan Gomes, as well as core members Marcus Douthit, Donnie McGrath, Sheiku Kabba, and assistant coach Bob Walsh as they provide a behind-the-scenes look at how this roster was constructed and when they started to turn the corner as a program. Tech impacts almost every major company. New types of disputes and problems are constantly arising—all of which present opportunities for general litigators with a broad understanding of the regulations and laws impacting tech. What can the new attorney expect, and how should they prepare? More on Mike Whalen. SPEAKERS Wayne Stacy, Mike Whalen Wayne Stacy 00:00 Welcome, everyone to the Careers and Technology podcast from the Berkeley Center of Technology. I'm your host, Wayne Stacy, the Executive Director for BCLT. And today, we're fortunate to have Mike Whalen from Paul Hastings with us. Mike is an attorney in the litigation department of Paul Hastings, specializing in general litigation with most of his clients in the tech space. So he gives us a really interesting view of how litigation is impacting tech companies and how to get ready for a career in that. So Mike, let me let me start with the idea about, you know, General litigation versus specialty litigation. You know, what should what should a student be thinking about? Mike Whalen 00:49 So I think, for a student, and when it's great to be here, and to talk with you, and hopefully help students figure out what they potentially want out of their career, especially those looking at litigation, which is what I'm familiar with, and students thinking about, it should really think broadly, I think about, you know, what they enjoy what led them to go to law school. And what led me in particular down the path of general litigation is really the notion of problem solving, and being able to think through problems across different industries, across different procedural matrices, whether you're in court or out of court, and maybe a post judgment proceeding. And I think that's really the skill of a generalist litigator, the ability to see a lot of industries see a lot of problems and see a lot of areas of the law. And if that's something that interests students, then they should really think hard about being a general litigator, because I do think there's a general shift, in this day and age you're either hyper specialized, or there's a real emphasis in larger firms like Paul Hastings, on having a broad base of skills as a generalist. Wayne Stacy 01:53 So that's a it's an interesting point about being hyper specialized. You know, I spent nearly all of my life doing patent litigation, which would be that hyper specialization, and not a lot of other things. 20 years ago, people said that, well, General litigation is dead. In big firms, you've got to be hyper specialized. But it seems to be drifting back towards the two specialization, you know, specialization and general litigation coexisting very, very well. Mike Whalen 02:25 Yeah, I think that's right. And I think that's the nature of where legal practice, again, at firms like Paul Hastings and other firms that you've spoken with on the podcast, I think that's where it's headed, in that, in general, the practice is driven by our clients hardest problems. And for some of our clients, particularly say, in the biotech space or in the pharma space, those hardest problems will consistently recur in the IP space. And there's absolutely an area for that hyper specialization. And you do see that a lot. But in other situations, our clients hardest problems change day to day, week to week, month to month, and that really cries out for a generalist who both can react to those problems, but also know when it's time to collaborate and work with specialists. And I think more often than not our teams, particularly in traditional specialist fields, such as antitrust, you're r

Welcome to Episode 65 of the Floppy Days Podcast, where a summer computer camp for middle-aged geeks is the highlight of our year.  My name is Randy Kindig.  This is a very special edition of Floppy Days produced and contributed by my good friend Mike Whalen and it includes sound bites from many of the attendees of this year’s annual week-long KansasFest Apple II event that always happens in Kansas City, Missouri.  Mike is a long-time Apple II and retro-computer fan and one of the hosts of the currently-dormant Electric Dreams BBS Podcast.  I met Mike at the one-and-only KansasFest event that I’ve been able to attend thus far, that being in 2014.  I would certainly recommend the event to anyone that enjoys getting together with a large number of vintage computer nuts for an entire week, living the college dorm life, and generally immersing themselves in the out-of-date-but-still-loads-of-fun Apple II computer.  It’s one of things that you must experience at least once, although for most people it tends to be like Lay’s Potato Chips: no one can stop at just one. I’m amazed at the effort and quality Mike put into this podcast.  I want to thank him and the Apple II KFest community for allowing me to air this ode to KFest on Floppy Days. Enjoy!
