Show #668 Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Thursday 16th January 2020. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story to save you time. Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too. VW CEO SAYS CARMAKER FACES SAME FATE AS NOKIA WITHOUT URGENT REFORMS "Volkswagen (VOWG_p.DE) needs to accelerate the overhaul of its business to avoid becoming another Nokia (NOKIA.HE), which lost its dominance in the handset market to Apple (AAPL.O), the German carmaker’s chief executive said." and reported by Reuters today: "VW will cut resources devoted to fuel cells, since they will not be as competitive as battery electric drivertrains for at least another decade. VW will also slash costs at its MOIA mobility services unit." Diess said: "The big questions is: Are we fast enough? If we continue at our current speed, it is going to be very tough. The era of the classic carmakers is over. In summary this is probably the most difficult challenge Volkswagen has ever faced." https://www.reuters.com/article/us-volkswagen-strategy-diess/vw-ceo-says-carmaker-faces-same-fate-as-nokia-without-urgent-reforms-idUSKBN1ZF1OB FOXCONN AND FIAT CHRYSLER WILL MAKE ELECTRIC CARS FOR CHINA "iPhone manufacturer Foxconn is getting into the electric vehicle game, thanks to a planned joint venture with Italian-American automaker Fiat Chrysler (FCA). Foxconn announced on Thursday that the two companies will combine forces to make vehicles for the Chinese market, with FCA handling the manufacturing and the Taiwanese tech giant managing the electronics and software." wrties The Verge: "FCA, which oversees its eponymous brands as well as ones like Jeep and Dodge, has lagged behind its competitors in embracing electric vehicle technology. The company recently kicked off a merger with French automaker PSA Group, which makes cars under the Peugeot and Citroën brands (among others), partly in order to better attack the changing automotive landscape" https://www.theverge.com/2020/1/16/21069288/foxconn-fiat-chrysler-electric-vehicles-china-joint-venture PLUG-IN ELECTRIC CAR SALES IN GERMANY DOUBLED IN DECEMBER 2019 From the InsideEVs Sales SCorecard: "Passenger plug-in electric car sales in Germany doubled in December, reaching the second-highest monthly level ever of 11,328 new registrations (up 98% year-over-year). The market share also improved to a near-record level, standing at 4.0%. That's one in every 25 new passenger cars. 2019 ended with 108,629 new passenger plug-in car registrations in Germany, which makes the country the biggest European market for EVs right now. The year-over-year growth amounted to 61%, while the average market share stands at 3%." https://insideevs.com/news/393067/plugin-car-sales-germany-december-2019/ VOLVO WILL BUILD NEW U.S. BATTERY PLANT TO HELP LAUNCH ELECTRIC XC90 Volvo will build its own U.S. battery assembly plant as it readies a line of electric vehicles for this market. The expansion is part of a previously announced $600 million project that the Swedish automaker has begun at its plant in Ridgeville, S.C., which includes a second production line and Volvo Car University." says Autonews.com: "Volvo will create an electric version of its next XC90 crossover and build it at the plant starting in late 2022. The factory, 45 miles northwest of Charleston, employs about 1,500 workers building the S60 sedan. The South Carolina plant will become the global production center for the third-generation XC90 flagship crossover" https://www.autonews.com/automakers-suppliers/volvo-building-us-battery-assembly-plant LEAF GETS CHEAPER "The Nissan LEAF is no longer the front-runner of electric cars and Nissan knows it. However, instead of introducing major changes to the LEAF, Nissan is pushing for a cheaper price to remain relevant." according to Pedro at PushEVs: "Now Nissan introduced a cheaper entry-level trim with a slower 3,6 kW on-board charger and without dual USB ports for the rear seats. Nonetheless, the price difference between the two cheapest trim levels can vary a lot from country to country. The new entry-level trim only seems tempting in Spain where it starts at 25.900 euros, which is 4.000 euros cheaper than the second cheapest trim level available. In other countries the difference between the two cheapest trim levels is a lot smaller and might not be worth it." https://pushevs.com/2020/01/16/nissan-leaf-gets-cheaper/ THE CHEVROLET BOLT IS HEADED TO CHINA AS A BUICK SUV "When spy photos of what appeared to be Chevrolet Bolt EV with some minor front- and rear-end updates circulated last week, Autoblog surmised that GM was working on some sort of Bolt-based vehicle — potentially a crossover — to be sold in China as a Buick." says Byron at Autoblog: "On Thursday, Motor1.com spotted a story published earlier this week on the Chinese site Auto Home which claims that GM has applied to sell an all-electric SUV under the Velite 7 nameplate in China. There's little differentiating the Velite 7's exterior from the Bolt EV's, apart from bumpers, badges, and a little extra ground clearance. Up front, the bowtie is replaced by a round Buick badge, and the bumper picks up an almost Prius-like appearance thanks to contrasting vertical elements and a thin grille bleeding into the head lights to give it a full-width appearance." https://www.autoblog.com/2020/01/16/buick-velite-ev-china/ TESLA RESPONDS TO GIGAFACTORY 4 PROTESTS BY SWIFTLY OPENING COMMUNITY OFFICE "Tesla has responded to local protests at the site of their next factory near Berlin by opening a community office to hear local concerns, according to Der Spiegel. The office opens Thursday, just a few days after site protests began." reports Electrek: "About 50 protesters gathered at the gigafactory site earlier this week to protest the plan. Their main concern was about the lack of public participation in the project. Tesla will now open a community office to hear those public concerns, as confirmed by Jörg Steinbach, Brandenburg’s minister of economics. Steinbach hopes that the opening of the community office will help to relax the situation between the protesters and Tesla." https://ww.electrek.co/2020/01/16/tesla-responds-gigafactory-4-protests-swiftly-community-office/# HONDA & MOIXA LAUNCH THEIR FIRST V2G PROJECT IN LONDON "Honda and Moixa have teamed up to launch the first fruit of their pan-European cooperation. Smart chargers with vehicle-to-grid technology have been installed in London’s borough Islington and foretell a future of bi-directional charging via CCS." says electrive: "For now, the project sees three smart charging stations located at the private parking space of Islington council with two more to come. Honda, together with its Swiss partner EVTec sign responsible for the station design. It is decidedly more compact than other V2G-capable charging stations and offers both ChaDeMo and CCS charging. The latter is a novelty as Honda claims that this will enable the first bi-directional charging capability via CCS, once the Honda E arrives this summer. For the time being, however, Islington Council runs a fleet of five Nissan eNV200 electric vans for a 12-month trial period and staff alone. The EVs charge with ChaDeMo and are capable of pushing energy back into the grid at 10 kW." https://www.electrive.com/2020/01/16/honda-moixa-launch-their-first-v2g-project-in-london/ NEW QUESTION OF THE WEEK The MYEV.com Question Of The Week… Which car company would you like to see doing more to embrace electrification? Show #557 Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Wednesday 21st August 2019. Firstly thank you to new EXECUTIVE PRODUCER GENE RUBIN! Also PRODUCER @TESLAHISTORIAN and finally PRODUCER ANDREW TILL TESLA POSTPONES FULL SELF-DRIVING PRICE INCREASE UNTIL V10 AND SMART SUMMON "Tesla was planning to increase the price of its “Full Self-Driving” package last week that was supposed to coincide with an update to its Autopilot features, like the new Smart Summon, but it now won’t happen until September/October." writes Fred at Electrek: "Earlier this month, Tesla announced plans to increase its Full Self-Driving price again on August 16, but August 16 came and went without any price increase. Today, Tesla CEO Elon Musk now confirmed that the price increase has been postponed until they release Version 10. Smart Summon, also known as Enhanced Summon, builds on Tesla’s previous Summon feature, which was used by owners to move their cars autonomously for a few feet in their driveway or in tight parking situations. With the new version, owners are able to Summon their Tesla vehicles from further away, and the cars will navigate more complex parking environments." https://electrek.co/2019/08/20/tesla-v10-smart-summon-postponed-full-self-driving-price-increase/ 2020 KARMA REVERO GT STARTS FROM $135,000 "Earlier this month, Karma Automotive announced details about the new 2020 Karma Revero GT, which is scheduled for retail deliveries from Q4 2019 on." according to InsideEVs: "The starting price (MSRP) is $135,000, which after destination charge and deducting the $7,500 federal tax credit, is effectively $128,900. 28 kWh battery (instead 21.4 kWh) expected 61 miles (98 km) of all-electric range EPA range (Revero 37 miles EPA) up to 360 miles (579 km) of total range, including up to 80 miles (129 km) electric and up to 280 miles (451 km) with generator 0-60 mph (96.5 km/h) in 4.5 seconds (Revero 5.4 seconds) 1.5L BMW TwinPower Turbo three-cylinder in-line engine (same as in BMW i8) as onboard generator (previously 2L GM engine) dual-motor rear-wheel drive (with torque vectoring for rear wheels)" https://insideevs.com/news/366314/2020-karma-revero-gt-135000/ REALITY CHECK: CHADEMO FAST-CHARGING STATIONS STILL OUTNUMBER CCS ONES "As tallied by the U.S. government’s Alternative Fuels Data Center, you’ll find that even now, in the second half of 2019, there are still more places to fast-charge CHAdeMO vehicles than those with CCS. As of August 20, 2019, there are 2,140 charging stations and 3,010 connectors with CHAdeMO fast charging. CCS still lags behind CHAdeMO in the number of stations by more than 250, while it has about 500 more connectors. And Tesla has 678 Supercharger locations with 6,340 connectors. The Nissan Leaf lineup is the only one still on the market to primarily use the CHAdeMO standard." says Green Car Reports: "Part of the reason why CCS hasn’t gained ground is that, as called out in the Partial Consent Decree of the Volkswagen diesel settlement, Electrify America has to future-proof its stations by operating across different charging standards. Therefore, all public-facing fast chargers will include a CHAdeMO connector—just one, in most cases, running at 50 kw instead of the CCS connectors’ 150kW or 350kW" https://www.greencarreports.com/news/1124639_chademo-fast-charging-stations-still-outnumber-ccs-ones MYSTERIOUS AUDI Q3 TEST MULE SPOTTED WITH CHARGING INLET "Spy photographers recently spotted in southern Europe an Audi Q3 with a charging inlet on the left-front fender, which clearly indicates it's a plug-in test mule." but what IS it, asks InsideEVs: "The question without an answer is whether it's a plug-in hybrid or an all-electric Audi test vehicle. It might herald a Q3 PHEV or a Q3/Q4 e-tron BEV, according to CarPix." https://insideevs.com/news/366367/audi-q3-test-mule-charging-inlet/ TOMTOM BOOSTS ELECTRIC REVOLUTION WITH TOOLS TO BEAT RANGE ANXIETY TomTom, [TOM2] the location technology specialist, today announced the launch of two new APIs for developers to help build applications for electric mobility. The new Long Distance EV Routing API allows users to route from A to B beyond one charge. The routing algorithm, specifically designed to optimize travel time, calculates the route including stops to charge, displaying an estimated arrival time that also considers the charging time. The second new API, EV Charging Stations Availability API, provides information about the availability of the charging stations per plug type, making sure the driver knows before arrival whether a charging point is available for use or not. https://www.tomtom.com/company/press-releases/news/25686/ FIRST 50 ORDERS DELIVERED AS ELECTRIC JCB DIGGER IN FULL PRODUCTION JCB has made manufacturing history by going into full production with the construction industry’s first fully electric mini excavator – with more than 50 machines already delivered. The 19C-1E models - JCB’s first-ever electric diggers - are now coming off the assembly line at JCB Compact Products in Cheadle, Staffordshire, with orders rolling in from customers from across Europe and North America. The machine is a staggering five times quieter than its diesel counterpart and can be fully charged in under two hours. The model is expected to be a big hit with companies working inside buildings and in emissions and noise-sensitive inner-city areas. Fully charged, the 19C-1E can put in a typical full day’s shift for a mini excavator. The 19C-1E will also offer customers great cost-of-ownership benefits, with research highlighting that over the first five years, charging costs will be 50 per cent cheaper for customers who would otherwise be using red diesel. Servicing costs are also expected to be up to 70 per cent lower compared to the diesel model. https://www.jcb.com/en-gb/news/2019/08/first-ever-electric-jcb-diggers-start-to-roll-off-production-line EO CHARGING AND MOIXA CONNECT FOR SMART EV CHARGING "The UK charger manufacturer EO Charging and smart grid firm Moixa are cooperating to create a dedicated smart home battery and solar package for electric vehicles. The system is designed to store renewable energy and to use it to charge the EV." reports electrive: "More specifically, the solution is to integrate an EO Genius EV charger and a 4.8kWh Moixa Smart Battery. The system is then connected to a customer’s solar panels and managed via Moixa’s smart-energy management software GridShare. Chris Wright, CTO at Moixa, stressed that not only will this maximise the use of home-generated solar energy but “at the same time customers will be able to take full advantage of emerging smart tariffs, and benefit from the cheap overnight energy for car charging while covering their household consumption during peak pricing”." https://www.electrive.com/2019/08/21/eo-charging-and-moixa-connect-for-smart-ev-charging/ TESLA’S EUROPEAN DEMAND RUMORS GET BLOWN OUT OF THE WATER "There is a certain predictive quality in looking at the ships Tesla’s has charted to ferry cars to Europe. In the past two quarters, the Europe/China ratio was 50/50, with the European vessels carrying some more cars than the ships bound for China." analyses Clean Technica: ""Now, in this third quarter, the Europe/China ratio is 2/1. Of the first 9 ships planned so far, 6 have been destined for Europe. The first shipload has reached the delivery centers, the second is on quay in Zeebrugge. The third is on the Atlantic, the fourth is nearing the Panama Canal, the fifth is at Pier 80 at San Francisco being loaded, and the sixth is due early next week in port." https://cleantechnica.com/2019/08/21/teslas-european-demand-rumors-get-blown-out-of-the-water/ ⛴ Morten Grove

Exact dates and locations will be listed on the company's website." https://insideevs.com/news/349532/polestar-2-world-tour-europe-sweden/ HYUNDAI AND RIMAC ARE TEAMING UP TO BUILD FAST EVS "Turns out everyone wants a piece of Rimac. Not least Hyundai and Kia, which have today announced they’re investing a not-insignificant €80 million in the Croatian EV hypercar maker and supplier to the likes of Aston Martin and Koenignegg." writes TopGear.com today "The aim? The formation of a “technical partnership” that will see the companies “collaborate on two high-performance electric vehicles by 2020”. Hell. Yes. A press release issued by the companies says “Hyundai Motor, Kia Motors and Rimac will work closely together to develop an electric version of Hyundai Motor’s N brand midship sports car and a high-performance fuel cell electric vehicle" https://www.topgear.com/car-news/electric/hyundai-and-rimac-are-teaming-build-fast-evs AMSTERDAM LAUNCHES FLEXPOWER SMART CHARGING NETWORK "The City of Amsterdam, Netherlands, launched this month Flexpower - tle argest smart charging network for electric vehicles, which maximizes the use of renewable energy, lowers the need for investments in the electric grid and accelerates charging speed during off-peak periods." says Mark Kane for InsideEVs.com "he project is conducted by Vattenfall and the City of Amsterdam, together with grid owner Liander, the infrastructure competence center Elaad, and the Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences. The network includes a total of 456 charging stations with 912 charging points (which is a third of all in Amsterdam) operated by Vattenfall, which were upgraded (power increased by 40%) and connected to the Flexpower. Having control over the charging stations, knowledge about current production by local renewable sources (mostly solar) and electricity demand, as well as forecasts, the Flexpower can limit charging power during peak periods (otherwise grid upgrades would be required) or increase the charging power during off-peak periods (especially when production from renewable sources is highest) to accelerate charging and quickly makes use of renewable electricity when it's available." https://insideevs.com/news/349089/amsterdam-flexpower-smart-charging-network/ FIRST DETAILS ON NEW RANGE ROVER "Land Rover will this autumn kick off an extremely significant two-year period of consolidation and expansion, following a turbulent 18 months, that will define the brand for the next decade. " reports Autocar: "A great deal of the activity will relate not just to the launch of four new vehicles but also increased electrification within its line-up. Although the marque’s pure-electric vehicles are still some years away – with sibling brand Jaguar leading the group in this market segment – all new Land Rover models from late 2019 will be offered with the option of mild-hybrid or plug-in hybrid drivetrains, allowing it to leave its diesel difficulties behind. " https://www.autocar.co.uk/car-news/industry/land-rover-plots-comeback-hybrid-led-new-model-blitz TESLA IS A PIONEER THAT DRIVES VOLKSWAGEN’S EV INITIATIVES "Volkswagen CEO Herbert Diess was recently asked about his insights on American electric car maker Tesla during an appearance at the Die Welt podcast. The VW boss was candid, stating that Tesla is a pioneer in the electric vehicle market, and it is one that drives Volkswagen in several areas. Despite this, the CEO noted that VW has a thing or two that can be used to catch up to the Silicon Valley-based company." says Teslarati: "VW CEO Herbert Diess noted that he hopes the American carmaker will survive. “I hope that Tesla survives because it is, of course, an incentive and an impulse for us,” he said. He later added that while Tesla has established a lead in the electric vehicle market, this headstart was “certainly not unassailable.” Diess explained that as a “small, focused company,” Tesla has certain advantages, particularly when it comes to its battery and its autonomous driving technologies." https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-drives-volkswagen-herbest-diess/ COMMUNITY And thanks to MYEV.com they’ve set us another Question Of The Week. Read today’s show notes on https://www.evnewsdaily.com Well good morning, good afternoon and good evening, wherever you are in the world, hello and welcome to the Saturday 21st July edition of EV News Daily. It’s Martyn Lee here with the news you need to know about electric cars and the move towards sustainable transport. And occasionally on a Saturday I like to pause the news for a day and bring you an interview or behind the scenes look at the world around electric transport. Today we’re heading to Moixa, a British technology company, founded in 2006 by Simon Daniel and Chris Wright, which focuses on Energy Innovation. They invent, manufacture and distribute smart energy technology and are the UK’s leading home battery company. I sat down for a chat with Chief Technology Officer Chris Wright. We talk about: *How electric vehicles can be part of a smart software solution to manage energy *How home batteries don’t need to be as large as we think *How we can use EVs for Vehicle To Grid (V2G) and Vehicle To Home (V2H) *Japan is leading the way for powering homes with Nissan LEAF’s *The future of home energy and when you’ll charge your EV *Grid balancing, renewables and storage to lower our carbon footprint *Using algorithms to know when it’s cheapest the charge your car Thank you Chris Wright and the Moixa team for being so kind to welcome me. Thank you also to Guste Sadaunykaite at Moixa and Will Spragg at Greenhouse PR. You can listen to all previous 186 episodes of this podcast on iTunes, Google Play, Spotify, YouTube, TuneIn, Stitcher, and the blog https://www.evnewsdaily.com/ – remember to subscribe, which means you don’t have to think about downloading the show each day, plus you get it first and free and automatically. Friday 2nd February 2018. EVgo provided 40 million miles of gas-free miles in 2017 from their 1,000 DC fast chargers. The average fast charge session lasted 25 minutes. In 2017 France led the way with 12,000 new EV charging points, ahead of Germany and UK. Nearly half of all buses on the roads will be electrified by 2025 with China leading the way. A brand new factory opened today in Oxfordshire, UK, to build 100,000 EV motors annually year including Jaguar and Williams as customers. The famous London black cabs are heading further afield as an international deal sees them arriving in Norway, albeit with a new livery and Scandinavian interior. CATL in China is valued at $20Bn and new investment sees them building a new plant to build cells, second in size to Tesla’s Gigafactory in Nevada. Numbers are starting to come in for January 2018 Plug In sales and the year hasn’t started as well as last year ended. However that was without full sales for the new Nissan LEAF and as Tesla Model 3 production increases. MOIXA is a UK company which provides PV plus storage to 1,000 customers, and now added Japanese investment will see new markets open up for their AI-driven system which sells excess energy back to the grid. SolarEdge has unveiled an integrated inverter charger for your electric car. Combining your PV and grid connection provides 9.6kW Level 2 charging for your electric car. And finally the Electric GT series has been given the green light by the FIA, which will see the all-electric racing series start later this year, with 20 drivers taking on European circuits in race ready Tesla Model S P100Ds. Thank you for listening today, I hope you've enjoyed it. We'd love to spread the word about electric cars so please do share this with at least one person who might be interested. Just a reminder you can listen to all of our previous podcasts on iTunes, whilst you’re there why not Subscirbe for free and then you get them automatically. It would really mean a lot if you could take 2mins to leave a quick review on iTunes which will help us spread the word to a wider audience about electric cars.
