In this conversation I speak with renegade economist and creator of doughnut economics Kate Raworth. Kate is a Senior Associate at Oxford University's Environmental Change Institute, where she teaches on the Masters in Environmental Change and Management. She is also Professor of Practice at Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences. We speak about economic transformation, and re-imagining economic possibilities for the 21st century. What should we design our economic system to do? Growth in GDP is a nice target to aim for because it is simple, but it doesn't do a very good job of capturing all of the economic externalities associated with market contracts, and in particular the impact of doing business on the environment and human well being. Our economies are beginning to run up against our planets boundaries, and it is becoming increasingly apparent that our planet is finite. So what should our target be if not for endless growth in GDP at the expense of our only known habitable planet? ►Watch on YouTube: https://youtu.be/edP8rgk6l3g ►Find out more about Kate's work here: https://www.kateraworth.com/about/  ►Follow Kate on Twitter:  @KateRaworth    These conversations are supported by the Andrea von Braun foundation (http://www.avbstiftung.de/), as an exploration of the rich, exciting, connected, scientifically literate, and (most importantly) sustainable future of humanity. Welcome to episode 74 of The Way Out Is In: The Zen Art of Living, a podcast series mirroring Zen Master Thich Nhat Hanh's deep teachings of Buddhist philosophy: a simple yet profound methodology for dealing with our suffering, and for creating more happiness and joy in our lives. In this installment, Zen Buddhist monk Brother Phap Huu and leadership coach/journalist Jo Confino are joined by special guest Kate Raworth, the creator of Doughnut Economics, to discuss from spirituality to new economic thinking; individual, community, and planetary boundaries; putting ideas into practice; practicing true love and no self; avoiding the trap of fame; and much more.Kate shares her journey into reimagining economics; the encounters that shaped her vision; regenerative enterprises and the inspiring communities making new economics a reality; and the discoveries made after attending a Plum Village retreat with her family.  Kate Raworth is the creator of the Doughnut of social and planetary boundaries, co-founder of Doughnut Economics Action Lab, and author of the internationally bestselling Doughnut Economics: Seven Ways to Think like a 21st Century Economist. She is a Senior Associate at Oxford University's Environmental Change Institute, and Professor of Practice at Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences.  Over the past 25 years, Kate's career has taken her from working with micro-entrepreneurs in the villages of Zanzibar to co-authoring the Human Development Report for the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in New York, followed by a decade as Senior Researcher at Oxfam. Economics, when you go back to ancient Greek, literally means the art of household management.” “We need to create economies that are distributive by design, that share resources with all, that are regenerative by design, that regenerate the living systems, and that go beyond growth. That’s the essence of doughnut economics.” “A volition and aspiration is a nutriment. It’s an energy to help us keep going. And the Buddha also gives us another antidote: aimlessness, which is to help us have an aspiration, but not think that, once we’ve arrived and completed that aspiration, that’s when we finally touch happiness.” “Man is not our enemy. It is ignorance, it is discrimination, it is ideology.” “I have arrived, I am home.” “In the light of Plum Village teaching, that joy and happiness is not money, it is not success in wealth and in fame, but it is in the mindfulness that in this moment I have eyes to see, I have a family to love, I have a community to be with. I can forgive my parents, my ancestors, because I am their continuation. I am renewing them in this moment.” “I wrote a book, but actually it’s the practitioner, the people who want to try it and do it, that turn ideas on a page into a reality.” “The Buddha did not say that on the shore there’s no suffering. It’s how to be free, even in our suffering, how to still touch happiness while there are storms and misunderstandings.” “Don’t try to be the movement, join the movement.” “One of the chapters I wrote in Doughnut Economics is called ‘Nurture Human Nature', and it starts with looking at ‘rational economic man’, a character that is taught in mainstream economics; it’s the individual, the autonomous, atomized individual, self-interested. He’s got money in his hand, ego in his heart, calculating in his head, nature at his feet. He hates work. He loves luxury. And he knows the price of everything, and he can never get enough.” “The definition of economics is the management of scarce resources for unlimited wants, the self-interest. So the models we make of ourselves remake us. An economist called Robert Frank and his colleagues did research finding that students who go to university from year one to year two to year three of studying economics, the more they learn about rational economic man, the more they admire him, the more they value self-interest and competition over collaboration and altruism.” “Who we tell ourselves we are shapes who we become. And this is a critical insight, not just for economics, but for any discipline, indeed any art, any belief system that tells us who we are. It remakes us.” “If you were holding a tiny baby and their temperature hit 40 degrees, would you say, ‘You go, girl, you burst through that boundary.' No. You would do everything you can because when something is a living being, we know that life thrives within boundaries. Our bodies give us signals about boundaries all day.” “We’re all probably lightly sweating now because today’s going to become 40 degrees and our bodies will sweat trying to calm themselves down. Or we shiver when we try to warm up. Or our stomachs will rumble if we’re really hungry or we’re thirsty. So we thrive within boundaries and rules give us a freedom. And when those rules are shared and we know others are following those rules, it allows all of us to be free and to enjoy something, and to come out and be truly ourselves and vulnerable and open, because there’s a deep trust.” “I am a drop in a river and we’re going together and there’s no hurry and nowhere to get to.” “Practice first, theorize later.” “People in a place utterly know their context and know what would be useful and know what would be possible and what they have energy and excitement to try.”

It's hard to tell what killed photography… whether it was the advent of the camera phone, the “pocket gallery” that is social media, or the thousands of men taking softcore images of hot women in lingerie and calling it art. These horsemen of the photography apocalypse were all put to trial when Emily Ratajkowski went up against acclaimed artist and professional troll, Richard Prince, after he featured one of her Instagram photos in an art exhibition in New York. An image she went on to purchase for $80,000. While Prince's “Instagram Paintings” series seems at best lazy and at worst sleazy, it raises fascinating questions about the state of photography as an art form. Photography has always had problems with authorship, but social media has thrown that into crisis. Once a photograph reaches the internet, is it yours any longer? Is it even a photograph at all? Hannah and Maia are joined by photographer and friend Stefan Johnson to discuss all this and more in this episode, embarking on tangents such as: what comprises a “Brat summer”, and Maia being too optimistic about Love Island UK. With so many moving pieces, how can we begin to create a coherent story of the world around us and - even more difficult - start preparing responses to coming challenges? What should individuals aware of these converging crises be thinking about in order to prepare themselves, their families, and their communities for a materially smaller future? 19:30 Technische Möglichkeiten vs. was wird tatsächlich angenommen?

On this Reality Roundtable, Nate is joined by Jon Erickson, Josh Farley, Steve Keen, and Kate Raworth - all of whom are leading thinkers and educators in the field of heterodox economics. In this lively discussion, each guest begins by sharing one fundamental aspect of what conventional economics gets wrong and how it could be improved in our education system. What basic assumptions about humans have led to a misunderstanding of the average person's decision-making? What areas has economics turned a blindspot to as the foundation of our economic systems? Who is finding the models and systems that economists have created useful - and how does economics as a discipline need to change in the face of a lower energy future? In short, what we teach our 18-22 year olds around the world matters - a great deal. About Jon Erickson Jon Erickson is the David Blittersdorf Professor of Sustainability Science & Policy at the University of Vermont. He has published widely on energy and climate change policy, land conservation, watershed planning, environmental public health, and the theory and practice of ecological economics.  He advised presidential candidate Bernie Sanders on economics and energy issues. About Josh Farley Joshua Farley is an ecological economist and Professor in Community Development & Applied Economics and Public Administration at the University of Vermont. He is the President of the International Society for Ecological Economics.  About Steve Keen Steve Keen is an economist, author of Debunking Economics and The New Economics: A Manifesto. He is a Research Fellow at the Institute for Strategy, Resilience, and Security at University College in London. About Kate Raworth Kate Raworth describes herself as a renegade economist focused on making economics fit for 21st century realities. She is the creator of the Doughnut of social and planetary boundaries, and co-founder of Doughnut Economics Action Lab, based on her best-selling book Doughnut Economics: 7 Ways to Think Like a 21st Century Economist. On this episode, Nate is joined by the creator of Doughnut Economics, Kate Raworth, to discuss alternative economies that measure more than just the material wealth created by a society. As we expand further past planetary boundaries, the gap between the standard of living of the materially wealthiest and poorest continues to grow. Increasingly, these shortfalls in both ecological and social well-being of the current economic system are becoming more recognized by the general populace.  Can we create systems that keep people from falling down the cracks, while also respecting the limits of our planetary home? Are there governments and businesses already aligning themselves to these principles and shifting to a different way of leading? Could moving towards a holistic system, such as Doughnut Economics, be enough to overcome the energy hungry growth of a global Superorganism? About Kate Raworth: Kate Raworth describes herself as a renegade economist focused on making economics fit for 21st century realities. She is the creator of the Doughnut of social and planetary boundaries, and co-founder of Doughnut Economics Action Lab, based on her best-selling book Doughnut Economics: 7 Ways to Think Like a 21st Century Economist. In the 1940s and 50s George Adamski , using a six inch telescope and a box camera, took pictures of what he believed were extraterrestrial space ships. Many can forward to debunk the photos but Adamski held firm that they were real. in addition, as a contactee, Adamski had messages from the aliens for people on Earth to be careful with natural resources and nuclear weapons.Tonight, Gerard Aartsen will talk about Adamski and the photos and his experiences while in contact with extraterrestrials.Gerard Aartsen (1957) is an author, speaker, researcher and educator from Amsterdam, the Netherlands. He has been a lifelong student of the Ageless Wisdom teaching, which holds that at the beginning or end of each cosmic Cycle (or Age) a Teacher returns with a new revelation about the source and evolution of consciousness that needs to be given expression by living according to the Golden Rule to establish right human relations. His many years of study and research resulted in the online reference ‘Our Elder Brothers Return – A History in Books‘ (2008).Gerard is also the author of eight books about the extraterrestrial presence, which he sees as further evidence of the evolution of consciousness and the universal manifestation of Life. In his books he takes the accounts of the original 1950s ‘contactees' as a starting point, dating as they do from before the time when the narrative about ET visitors was contaminated by deliberate disinformation to contain the growing public interest in their calls for international cooperation during the Cold War. He was the first to explicate a method for qualitative research into claims of contact, for which he uses the transdisciplinary synthesis approach. His research into George Adamski signalled a thorough reassessment of this major case of contact, and led to his re-discovering of Adamski's forgotten first publication, The Invisible Ocean, in 2018.Several of Gerard's books have been translated and published in multiple languages and his articles have appeared in magazines around the world. Gerard is a frequent guest on international radio shows about UFOs and related subjects, and has lectured about his work in America, Europe and Asia.Gerard has a Master of Education (M.Ed.) degree from the Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences (AUAS), the Netherlands. After travelling the world as a backpacker in his late teens/early twenties, Gerard settled in Amsterdam as a translator. Around age 40, he reinvented himself as a teacher of English and soon became a teacher trainer at AUAS, where he held a teaching position at the School of Education since 2001 and continues to mentor students in their teaching practice today. In this episode we have a debate between Kate Raworth, Bob Costanza and Eric Gòmez-Baggethun on Monetary Valuation of Nature: pragmatic conservation or unhelpful commodification? This is an edited version of a debate that took place at the Oxford Martin School in February 2023. You can find the fill video of it here:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hl7wSuAuKyQ&ab_channel=OxfordBiodiversityNetwork    Notes:The valuation of nature and ecosystem services in monetary units plays a central role in many forms of environmental governance, including in carbon and biodiversity markets and offsetting schemes which are increasingly under scrutiny. The idea of using monetary units to value nature has precipitated significant debate, with proponents contending that it represents a pragmatic and realist approach to accounting for the environment in decision-making processes, unlocking substantial funding for conservation, while others argue that it can lead to a commodification of nature that ultimately proves inequitable and ineffective in addressing environmental challenges. In the spirit of developing a constructive dialogue on the issue, Kate Raworth will moderate a discussion between two ecological economists, Robert Costanza and Erik Gomez-Baggethun, who will explore the debates and tensions associated with using monetary units to value nature and ecosystem services and role such valuations play in contemporary environmental governance.Kate RaworthKate is an economist focused on making economics fit for the 21st century. We're all trapped. No matter how hard you try to delete apps from your phone, the power of seduction draws you back. Doom scrolling is the new normal of a 24/7 online life. What happens when your home office starts to feel like a call center and you're too fried to log out of Facebook? We're addicted to large-scale platforms, unable to return to the frivolous age of decentralized networks. How do we make sense of the rising disaffection with the platform condition? Zoom fatigue, cancel culture, crypto art, NFTs and psychic regression comprise core elements of a general theory of platform culture. Geert Lovink argues that we reclaim the internet on our own terms. Stuck on the Platform: Reclaiming the Internet (Valiz 2022) is a relapse-resistant story about the rise of platform alternatives, built on a deep understanding of the digital slump. Geert Lovink is a Dutch media theorist, internet critic and author of Uncanny Networks (2002), Dark Fiber (2002), My First Recession (2003), Zero Comments (2007), Networks Without a Cause (2012), Social Media Abyss (2016), Organisation after Social Media (with Ned Rossiter, 2018) and Sad by Design (2019). In 2004 he founded the Institute of Network Cultures at the Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences (HvA). His center organizes conferences, publications and research networks such as Video Vortex (online video), The Future of Art Criticism and MoneyLab (internet-based revenue models in the arts). Recent projects deal with digital publishing experiments, critical meme research, participatory hybrid events and precarity in the creative sector. In this very special episode of The Regenerative Education Podcast you can listen in on a selection of personal reflections from students who participated in the very first iteration of the national leadership programme for circular transitions. This programme is an educational innovation that emerged from a consortium that brought together the Dutch ministry of Infrastructure & water management, NGO's Het Groene Brein, Leren voor Morgen, RvO, and The Hague University of Applied Sciences, Fontys University of Applied Sciences, Rotterdam University of Applied Sciences, Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences, Zuyd University of Applied Sciences and InHolland University of Applied Sciences. We started with about sixty courageous students from all fields of study at bachelor and graduate-level who committed to participating in this four-month hybrid programme that combined working on local or regional transition challenges and following a tailored course of interactive workshops and masterclasses provided by leading researchers, professors, policymakers and practitioners. Topics that were covered in these sessions included transition design, personal sustainability, and futuring. Throughout this programme, the students were supported in their learning with a dedicated learning journal, that was co-designed by the consortium for this purpose. The LCT programme culminated in the second iteration of the National Hackathon Circular Economy and as presented at the National Conference on the Circular Economy in the Netherlands in February 2022. In the National Hackathon, students tackled the issue of creating a more circular textile ecosystem in the Netherlands, linking directly to one of the transition agendas of the Dutch government. The National Talent Program Leadership for the Circular Transition (LCT) aims to train the next generation of leaders to become circular change agents for the Netherlands of tomorrow. We hope you enjoy the episode. https://www.leadership-circular-transition.nl/#:~:text=The%20National%20Talent%20Program%20Leadership%20for%20the%20Circular%20Transition%20(LCT,for%20the%20Netherlands%20of%20tomorrow.

Ynzo van Zanten is Tony Chocolonely's ‘Choco Evangelist', and yes, he wants to convert you. He's here to tell the story of the Tony's roadmap to 100% slave-free chocolate and to get every choco stakeholder on board.   Tony's is committed to making the universe of chocolate production fair and equitable for all involved, particularly the farmers and the people working on cocoa farms in West Africa. They do incredible work to make incredible chocolate.   Ynzo combines his talents as an economist, author, entrepreneur and storyteller in his work for Tony's (and still manages to sleep a few hours a night). Ynzo is also the convenor of the ‘Sustainable Leadership & Entrepreneurship' program at the Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences, and a guest lecturer at the University of Amsterdam and TU Delft. In his spare time Ynzo sits on the boards of 10.000 Hours and Plastic Whale foundations.   Find out more about Tony's Chocolonely here.   In this episode we discuss: Why a Dutch journalist filed a lawsuit against himself Why Fairtrade is good, but where it doesn't go far enough The power of the default setting The problem with “work-life balance”   Key takeaways: There is so much change worth fighting for. While posting allegiance to a cause or a conviction online is nice, it's not enough. To be worthy of claiming a conviction requires a willingness to stand by it, to fight for it, even when it's not popular. Even when it's hard. Change happens one step at a time. Our collective choices, and collective voices, are the only thing that will change the world. Words matter. They anchor our actions and frame the way we see things. Ask yourself, what would it feel like if all Human Resources departments changed to People and Culture Departments? What would we stop doing? What would we start doing? Or, how would the world change if the norm—the default setting for an enterprise—was “social enterprises” and the fringe was “antisocial enterprises”? Let's all start thinking and behaving like the average Dutchman that doesn't take “no” as an answer, but instead takes it as a question mark. A challenge to create a new approach that transforms a no into a yes.   References: Follow Tony's on Instagram and Twitter Learn more about the chocolate industry and how Tony's is changing it here Tony (also known as The Chocolate Case) page on IMDB The Tony's 2020/2021 Annual Fair Report “Assessing Progress in Reducing Child Labor in Cocoa Growing Areas of Côte d'Ivoire and Ghana” project by NORC at the University of Chicago Tony's Open Chain sourcing project to create a transparent chocolate industry Fairtrade International Callebaut and Jokolade chocolatiers   Connect & Share: If you enjoy the podcast, would you please consider leaving a short review on Apple Podcasts/iTunes? Christine's story of unresolved grief started in her teen years, but she didn't start unpacking it until over 25 years later. Her story has come full circle, as she now helps women in transition tell their stories. She shares the power of knowing and telling her own story, and how stories help us connect with people. “I had really boxed it up and put it away and not looked at it for many, many, many years. Until I started to realize what an impact it had on me, and my ability to just be myself with people, and to talk to people and let them see me -- and allow me to see them.” We also talk about How stories make parenting easier - for us and our kids; The special need for story during times of transition - and why it's so much harder at that time; How to construct an effective story; and more. Doughnut Economics is rapidly moving from the fringe to the mainstream. Amsterdam in Holland was recently confirmed as the first ‘Doughnut City’, using the model to underpin its economic development strategy. Many other cities are also moving towards adopting this powerful and fascinating tool for reimagining cities and their economies. Our question in this episode, your mind-expanding piece of summer listening, is "what if every city used Doughnut Economics?' As usual, I have sought out the two very best people to help me explore this. Kate Raworth is an economist focused on making economics fit for the 21st century. Her book Doughnut Economics: seven ways to think like a 21st century economist is an international bestseller that has been translated into 18 languages. She is co-founder of Doughnut Economics Action Lab, which works with change-makers to turn Doughnut Economics from a radical idea into transformative action. She teaches at Oxford University and Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences. Marieke van Doorninck is Alderman for Sustainability and Urban Development for the City of Amsterdam. From 2006 until 2014, she was a member of the Municipal Council for the GreenLeft party, of which she was the party chair since 2009. Before that, she worked for different organisations focusing on refugees and women’s rights. She is one of the key people working with Kate and the Doughnut Economic Lab team to bring the Doughnut model to Amsterdam. The conversation that followed, and the new vision it opened up, is fascinating, and I hope you really enjoy it. Doughnut Economics creates, by identifying the 'safe space' in which our city economies need to operate, a powerful imaginative space. As usual, do let me know what you think.

In summer of 2019 NICE approved the use of a completely new class of drugs: the gene silencers. These compounds are transforming the lives of families who have rare debilitating – and sometimes fatal - diseases such as amyloidosis and porphyria. James Gallagher, BBC Health and Science Correspondent, reveals the ups and downs in the story of how a Nobel prize winning discovery of RNA interference has become a useful drug in less than a quarter of a century. Professor Craig Mello, one of the winners of the Nobel Prize in 2006 for revealing the mechanism of RNA interference, and Professor Mark Kay of Stanford University, look back at the discovery. Sue Burrell, who has acute intermittent porphyria, explains how a gene silencing drug has reversed her symptoms of extreme pain. Dr Carlos Heras-Palou, an orthopaedic surgeon at Royal Derby Hospital, who has hereditary transthyretin-mediated amyloidosis has had his career saved by taking another gene silencing drug, patisaran. It has restored the feeling in his hands he had lost and means that he can continue to carry out operations. Professor Philip Hawkins, of the National Amyloidosis Centre at the Royal Free Hospital, tells James about how his team showed that this drug reverses some of the symptoms caused by the disease. As well as treating these rare conditions James discovers that this approach is being tried in untreatable neurodegenerative conditions. He talks to Professor Sarah Tabrizi of UCL about her research into stopping Huntington's disease, which is currently inevitably fatal. Akshay Vaishnaw of the biotech company Alnylam talks to James about the ups and downs of developing effective RNAi drugs. And Professor John Kastelein of Amsterdam University discusses the findings of a study into finding out if gene silencing could help prevent one of the biggest global killers; bad cholesterol that causes heart attacks and stroke. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.   ALREADY MORE THAN 15,000 REGISTRATIONS FOR THE VOLKSWAGEN ID.3 Less than one week after the start of pre-booking for the ID.3, more than 15,000 registrations have already been received for the first model in the new full-electric ID. family. That is already more than half of the total pre-booking volume of 30,000 vehicles. Volkswagen has recorded the greatest interest from the markets of Germany, Norway, the Netherlands, the UK and Sweden.   PORSCHE TAYCAN TURBO FIRST RIDE TEASES PRODUCTION SPECS AND PRICE "Porsche recently granted Automobile Magazine a rare test ride in the Taycan Turbo, the top-tier variant of the company’s first modern all-electric car." says Simon at Teslarati: "Similar to other electric vehicles, the Taycan is capable of regenerative braking as well, though the vehicle’s maximum regeneration is an impressive 250 kW. Higher-tier models also boast features like air suspension and rear-wheel steering. Porsche is yet to fully announce the final specs of the Taycan, though a brand ambassador has confirmed the contents of a document obtained by the Automobile listing the features and specs of each Taycan version. According to the document, the base Taycan will be Rear Wheel Drive only, and it will be equipped with an 80 kWh battery pack. The base Taycan will be powered by a choice of 240-kW (322-hp) and 280-kW (375-hp) motors, and it will command a price in the low ~$90,000 range."   https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-model-s-rival-porsche-taycan-turbo-gts-specs-price/   2020 MERCEDES-BENZ EQC FIRST OFFICIAL TEST DRIVE IN L.A The YouTube description says: “Hop into the all-new Mercedes-Benz EQC 400 4MATIC (2019) and let our host Felix Smith take you on a tour through the streets of Los Angeles, California. In this very first real EQC test drive we put the car through its paces. So here is – almost – everything you might want to know about the features and details of the first fully electric SUV by Mercedes-Benz and our idea of the electric future of mobility.   The two electric motors of the EQC 400 4MATIC produce 410 PS, which are good for a 0 to 60 mph sprint in just 5.1 seconds. But there’s so much more to this vehicle than sheer power. That’s why we also talk about the car’s different exterior lines, its technical features like recuperation and the integrated MBUX system with gesture control. Moreover, we thoroughly reviewed the car’s distinctive design, its five different driving modes, the charging options, and we give you the hard facts & numbers like the EQC’s driving range.”   https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=1074&v=eDb5wCW8JFs   MOIXA COMPLETES £8.6 MILLION FUNDING ROUND LED BY HONDA "Smart battery company Moixa has announced the completion of a multi-million pound funding round in which a collection of global investors led by Honda have backed its vision for the future of home energy storage systems." reports Utility Week: "The £8.6 million will be used to support the company’s plans for international growth and expansion of its current business; managing home batteries, electric vehicles (EVs) and smart charging, and aggregating battery capacity to provide grid services."   https://utilityweek.co.uk/moixa-completes-8-6-million-funding-round-led-honda/   POLESTAR 2 WORLD TOUR ARRIVES IN EUROPE STARTING IN SWEDEN "Polestar announced the launch of the Polestar 2 tour in Europe this month to present its first all-electric cars ahead of market introduction in 2020." according to an InsideEVs article today: "The first two locations are: Gothenburg, Sweden, from 22-24 May Stockholm, Sweden, from 30 May to 02 June The roadshow will be conducted in fifteen cities in Europe, between May and October 2019. In June, Polestar will arrive in the Netherlands and Belgium, followed by the UK in July, Germany in August and September, and Norway in October. Exact dates and locations will be listed on the company's website."   https://insideevs.com/news/349532/polestar-2-world-tour-europe-sweden/   HYUNDAI AND RIMAC ARE TEAMING UP TO BUILD FAST EVS "Turns out everyone wants a piece of Rimac. Not least Hyundai and Kia, which have today announced they’re investing a not-insignificant €80 million in the Croatian EV hypercar maker and supplier to the likes of Aston Martin and Koenignegg." writes TopGear.com today "The aim? The formation of a “technical partnership” that will see the companies “collaborate on two high-performance electric vehicles by 2020”. Hell. Yes. A press release issued by the companies says “Hyundai Motor, Kia Motors and Rimac will work closely together to develop an electric version of Hyundai Motor’s N brand midship sports car and a high-performance fuel cell electric vehicle"   https://www.topgear.com/car-news/electric/hyundai-and-rimac-are-teaming-build-fast-evs   AMSTERDAM LAUNCHES FLEXPOWER SMART CHARGING NETWORK "The City of Amsterdam, Netherlands, launched this month Flexpower - tle argest smart charging network for electric vehicles, which maximizes the use of renewable energy, lowers the need for investments in the electric grid and accelerates charging speed during off-peak periods." says Mark Kane for InsideEVs.com "he project is conducted by Vattenfall and the City of Amsterdam, together with grid owner Liander, the infrastructure competence center Elaad, and the Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences. The network includes a total of 456 charging stations with 912 charging points (which is a third of all in Amsterdam) operated by Vattenfall, which were upgraded (power increased by 40%) and connected to the Flexpower. Having control over the charging stations, knowledge about current production by local renewable sources (mostly solar) and electricity demand, as well as forecasts, the Flexpower can limit charging power during peak periods (otherwise grid upgrades would be required) or increase the charging power during off-peak periods (especially when production from renewable sources is highest) to accelerate charging and quickly makes use of renewable electricity when it's available."   https://insideevs.com/news/349089/amsterdam-flexpower-smart-charging-network/   FIRST DETAILS ON NEW RANGE ROVER "Land Rover will this autumn kick off an extremely significant two-year period of consolidation and expansion, following a turbulent 18 months, that will define the brand for the next decade. " reports Autocar: "A great deal of the activity will relate not just to the launch of four new vehicles but also increased electrification within its line-up. Although the marque’s pure-electric vehicles are still some years away – with sibling brand Jaguar leading the group in this market segment – all new Land Rover models from late 2019 will be offered with the option of mild-hybrid or plug-in hybrid drivetrains, allowing it to leave its diesel difficulties behind. "   https://www.autocar.co.uk/car-news/industry/land-rover-plots-comeback-hybrid-led-new-model-blitz   TESLA IS A PIONEER THAT DRIVES VOLKSWAGEN’S EV INITIATIVES "Volkswagen CEO Herbert Diess was recently asked about his insights on American electric car maker Tesla during an appearance at the Die Welt podcast. The VW boss was candid, stating that Tesla is a pioneer in the electric vehicle market, and it is one that drives Volkswagen in several areas. Despite this, the CEO noted that VW has a thing or two that can be used to catch up to the Silicon Valley-based company." says Teslarati: "VW CEO Herbert Diess noted that he hopes the American carmaker will survive. “I hope that Tesla survives because it is, of course, an incentive and an impulse for us,” he said. He later added that while Tesla has established a lead in the electric vehicle market, this headstart was “certainly not unassailable.” Diess explained that as a “small, focused company,” Tesla has certain advantages, particularly when it comes to its battery and its autonomous driving technologies."   https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-drives-volkswagen-herbest-diess/   COMMUNITY And thanks to MYEV.com they’ve set us another Question Of The Week. Kate Hawkesby: The fatherhood premium versus the motherhood penalty

Interesting finding out of an Amsterdam University, that part-time working mothers with flexible schedules, end up doing more work without pay. This is often to compensate for the fact they're working fewer hours, and feel torn between home and work.Which reminds me of an interview I did with a post-doctoral fellow in Sociology from the University of Pennsylvania. She was describing a phenomenon sociologists now call the ‘ fatherhood premium’ which is where being a dad actually increases your employability and salary, whereas motherhood penalises women.Women who have children, end up with five to 10 per cent lower wages per child, than women without children. But for men, being a dad adds value. Men who have kids are considered to be more likely to be responsible, they’re more likely to start on a higher wage and are more likely to be considered for promotions. So how is this possible given our big push for gender parity and workplace equality? How is parenthood such a divisive factor?Men, it was found, upon having children, seem to increase their attachment to the labour force. So is spending more time at work for a dad perhaps easier than going home to bath and feed the kids?  Or is it more about a renewed focus on providing more for their family? Either way, dads tend to chalk up more hours, be seen as more responsible, and be revered for it. So what is that? Is that an ingrained bias? Is it that society expects women to be at home with children, but applauds men who have kids and come to work?Is it a conscious decision employers make? Apparently many employers view women with children as having a split focus – a mother may want to get home in time for the kids, or only be available until the phone rings from the school sick bay. This bias from employers may almost be unconscious, in spite of the fact that mothers often put out as much, or even more work than a male counterpart or another woman who is not a parent. This is not the case for every employer of course, but it’s interesting that despite all our focus and efforts on addressing gender parity and workplace equality, we still have some way to go for mums who choose to work.

The gravitational waves produced by two massive black holes colliding have for the first time been detected by three gravitational wave detectors. Professor Sheila Rowan of the University of Glasgow explains the importance of this new three way observation. The World Health organisation reports that there are too few new candidate antibiotics in the development pipelines to replace those becoming obsolete through the rapid spread of antibiotic resistance. Professor Willem van Shaik of the University of Birmingham and pharma-biotech analyst Dr Jack Scannell discuss where the problems and solutions might lie. Could bacteria recycle all of our waste? Waste disposal is a growing concern as nations run out of space and ecosystems are increasingly polluted. Microorganisms may hold the key for turning household waste into biodegradable plastic and perhaps one day even into food and basic chemical feedstocks. Hans Vesterhoff, Professor of Systems Biology at Amsterdam University is developing microbial networks with the aim of converting all carbon-based waste into useful or edible stuff. AI and Opera: Prof Luc Steels, an AI and language researcher at the Institute for Advanced Studies of Catalonia is also a composer. He has just had his new opera premiered. With a libretto written by a neuropsychiatrist colleague, the opera 'Fausto' is a re-telling of the Faust story. It explores the dangers and flawed thinking of silicon-based transhumanism. In the opera, the Faust character is a social media-obsessed hipster and Mephistopheles is a malevolent AI in the cloud. In a twist on the original, Fausto trades his body rather than his soul so that he can be uploaded and reunited with his lover in the cloud.

A lot of Modernist houses you love from the 1950's and 1960's are going the way of unfortunate "renovations" or the bulldozer, largely because few people are aware of their architectural significance.  Although most houses by famous architects are on lists, it's difficult to find where they are actually located. We talk with two expert house trackers who have between them documented thousands of houses and flown tens of thousands of miles to visit them! Jan-Richard Kikkert is an Amsterdam-based architect and head of the Architectural Department of the Amsterdam Academy of Architecture. He has visited every project designed by John Lautner, over 300 from Los Angeles to Aspen and from Anchorage to Acapulco.  He is Head of Architecture Department at the Amsterdam University of the Arts and a member of the Board of Advisors of the John Lautner Foundation.  He was in the documentary Infinite Space: The Architecture of John Lautner. Paul Moore is a former architect turned IT professional. He graduated with a BS in Architecture from the University of Michigan in 1986 and moved to Los Angeles to study at SCI-ARC. He started working on the digital version of Sweet's Catalogs for several years and in 2007, began using online mapping tools to locate public art and architecture posting to VirtualGlobeTrotting.com.  He has searched for and found nearly 11,000 houses!

In this episode of Paranormal Underground Radio: In The Dark, we talk with Gerard Aartsen, author, researcher, and speaker. After having traveled around the world as a backpacker, Gerard, a Dutchman, settled in Amsterdam as a translator in 1985. In the late 1990s, he decided it was time to change tack and eventually earned his master’s of education degree from the Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences, where he has held a teaching position in the department of secondary education since 2001.  He has also been a student of the Ageless Wisdom teaching for over 35 years, and his many years of study and research into the Wisdom teachings resulted in the online reference Our Elder Brothers Return – A History in Books (2008). Having acquired and studied some of the more obscure writings by contactee George Adamski, Gerard wrote George Adamski – A Herald for the Space Brothers (2010), which critics acclaimed as a refreshing, scholarly treatment of his subject. His second book, Here to Help: UFOs and the Space Brothers (2011), shows how the messages from the pre-disinformation contactees all agree on the spiritual realities and the Oneness of Life. In Priorities for a Planet in Transition – The Space Brothers’ Case for Justice and Freedom (2015), Gerard compiles what the Space Brothers have shared since the 1950s in terms of alternative, saner ways of organizing society to tackle the crises that have brought our civilization to its knees. A long-standing coworker in the worldwide network of groups affiliated with British esotericist Benjamin Creme, Gerard writes regular contributions to Share International magazine about the extraterrestrial presence on Earth, is a frequent guest on international radio and TV shows about UFOs and related subjects, and has lectured in America, Europe, and Asia. Many people are living with chronic diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis and inflammatory bowel conditions in which the body attacks itself. Although drug treatments have improved over recent years they do not work for everyone and can have serious side effects. Now researchers such as neurologist Dr Kevin Tracey of the Feinstein Institute for Medical Research, and rheumatologist Professor Paul-Peter Tak of Amsterdam University, are trying a new approach to improving the lives of these patients. They are firing electrical pulses along the vagus nerve, a major nerve that connects the brain with all the organs. The technology to do this has been around for some decades as stimulating the vagus nerve has been used to help people who have epilepsy that isn't controlled with drugs since the 1990s. Gaia Vince talks to these pioneers of this new field of research. And she hears how there may be ways of improving the tone of the vagal nerve using meditation.
