The STOXX 600 fell 0.2%, Germany's DAX also lost 0.2%, the French CAC fell 0.01% and, in the UK, the FTSE100 ended the day down 0.14%.Across the Asia region on Tuesday, markets closed mostly lower in the region tracking global market sell-offs early in the week. China's CSI index bucked the sea of red to rise 0.57% on Tuesday while South Korea's Kospi Index fell 1.31%, and Japan's Nikkei lost 1.39%. Hyundai Motor shares debuted on India's stock exchange on Tuesday with a record IPO but shares ended the day down 7%.The local market started the week higher before closing 1.66% lower on Tuesday in line with the Wall Street's pullback on Monday. With markets now factoring the need for a less aggressive rate cut strategy out of the US as inflation eases and the economy remains resilient, investors are now questioning how much steam the local and global market rally has left.Mineral Resources and WiseTech Global have been under pressure this week amid news and respective investigations into those at the helm of the mining and logistics technology company alike.Audinate Group fell over 6% on Tuesday after the media software provider released a quarterly update outlining weak performance in a challenging operating environment was the key reason for full-year gross profit missing the target.Toll roads operator Transurban also fell almost 2% yesterday despite reaffirming FY25 distribution guidance of 65cps and reported growth in traffic across its key markets aside from Melbourne. One element of positivity in the Aussie market yesterday was Australian consumer confidence jumping to its highest level since January last year last week with a rise to 87.5 points, or a 4.1 point rise as the outlook for inflation eases and consumer sentiment was boosted by strong Australian jobs data also released last week.Wine exports from Australia also climbed 34% to $2.39bn in the 12-months to the end of September which is a welcomed boost for listed companies like Treasury Wine Estates which has faced tougher operating conditions prior to China lifting its tariffs on Aussie wine exports recently. What to watch today:Ahead of the midweek trading session here in Australia the SPI futures are expecting the ASX to open the day up 0.28% despite the pullback on Wall St on Tuesday. On the commodities front this morning oil is trading 2.26% higher at US$71.63/barrel, gold is up 0.92% at US$2746/ounce, and iron ore is down 0.13% at US$105.23/tonne.The Aussie dollar has weakened against the greenback overnight to buy US$0.66, 101.03 Japanese Yen, 51.39 British Pence and NZ$1.11.Trading Ideas:Bell Potter has decreased the 12-month price target on Select Harvests (ASX:SHV) from $4.95 to $4.60 and maintain a buy rating on the almond producer following a disappointing FY24 update including a capital raising and the guidance for FY24 underlying EBIT of $17-19m which is lower than Bell Potter was expecting. Bell Potter maintains the buy rating due to recent strengthening in almond prices driving upside potential. And Trading Central has identified a bearish signal on The Star Entertainment Group (ASX:SGR) following the formation of a pattern over a period of 17-days which is roughly the same amount of time the share price may fall from the close of 27cps to the range of 15 cps to 17 cps according to standard principles of technical analysis.

It's an amazing Tuesday to be in the car business as we talk about some favorable effects from the UAW strike for workers at other OEMs. We also cover Exxon's transition into lithium production, as well as a little slip from a Google employee during the trial. We're starting today with two labor related stories…The first is Stellantis has announced voluntary buyout packages for 6,400 U.S. salaried employees, citing challenging market conditions. This move aligns with the company's transition to EVs and its Dare Forward 2030 strategy In a statement the company said: "As we prepare for the transition to electric vehicles, Stellantis announced today that it will offer a voluntary separation package to assist those non-represented employees who would like to separate or retire from the company to pursue other interests with a favorable package of benefits," The decision coincides with UAW members voting on a labor agreement that includes double-digit raises and $19 billion in manufacturing investments.Hyundai Motor has announced a 25% wage increase for nonunion production workers at its Alabama factory by 2028, following similar moves by Toyota and Honda.Honda also recently announced an 11% pay hike for U.S. production workers, influenced by UAW negotiations.Exxon is aiming to be a leading producer of lithium production by the year 2030 as they announced their plan to start lithium production in the U.S. by 2027, and producing batteries for one million EVs annuallyExxon aims to produce lithium from briny waters in Arkansas, using conventional drilling and direct lithium extraction technology."In the long term, lithium really is a global opportunity," said Dan Ammann, president of Exxon's Low Carbon business unit. "We are starting here because there is an urgent need to ramp up domestic production of these critical materials."Fun fact: Exxon actually invented the rechargeable lithium-ion battery in the 70s yet has no plans to invest in EV charging stations like its rivals BP and Shell. Just when you thought Apple and Google were just good friends, it was revealed in Google's antitrust trial that they pay 36% of all ad revenue from Safari to Apple. This figure was revealed in Google's antitrust trial, where it was disclosed that Google spent $26.3 billion in 2021 to be Safari's default search engine, with $18 billion going to Apple.According to Bloomberg, Google lawyer John Schmidtlein “visibly cringed when Murphy said the number.”Hosts: Paul J Daly and Kyle MountsierGet the Daily Push Back email at https://www.asotu.com/ JOIN the conversation on LinkedIn at: https://www.linkedin.com/company/asotu/ Read our most recent email at: https://www.asotu.com/media/push-back-email ASOTU Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/automotivestateoftheunion

The electric vehicle (EV) sector experienced a significant shift on Tuesday as Rivian, an American automaker specializing in electric pickup trucks and SUVs, confirmed its decision to adopt Tesla's proprietary charging standard. This watershed moment propels Rivian's customers onto the largest EV charging network in the United States and augments Tesla's aspiration to establish a universally adopted industry standard. Rivian, with its roots firmly planted in Illinois, projected that its patrons would enjoy access to a whopping 12,000 Tesla Superchargers sprinkled across the US and Canada starting in the spring of 2024. This compatibility would require adapters in the initial phase. Additionally, the automaker has planned a progression towards incorporating a Tesla-style charging port as standard on its vehicles by the year 2025, replacing its current proprietary technology. Currently, Rivian operates a modest network of its own fast-charging stations. However, the allure of Tesla's connector, touted for its compactness and extensive infrastructure, has led Rivian's leadership to this strategic pivot. "We see a golden opportunity to capitalize on the charging infrastructure that Tesla has painstakingly built," Rivian CEO, RJ Scaringe, revealed in an interview with Reuters. This alliance with Tesla forms part of a recent trend that has seen several automakers and charging infrastructure providers choosing to adopt Tesla's charging standard. On the same day as Rivian's announcement, BTC Power, a major player in EV charging solutions, declared its plan to integrate Tesla's standard into its portfolio. The government of Texas echoed this sentiment, mandating state-funded charging stations to incorporate Tesla's plug. At the same time, Korean automaker Hyundai Motor is contemplating a more significant alignment of its vehicles with Tesla's standard.

A second Hyundai Motor supplier has been accused of violating child labor laws. On Monday, the Department of Labor accused SL Alabama of employing underage workers at a factory in Alexander City, Alabama. The company, a subsidiary of SL Corp, a South Korean company, makes headlights, rear lights and other parts for Hyundai and Kia, a Hyundai Motor Group-controlled company. According to Reuters, which reviewed the federal court filings, SL Alabama has repeatedly violated labor laws since last November. The DOL accused the company of "employing oppressive child labor" and minors under 16 years old. The company admitted that children worked at the factory in a statement to Reuters. However, SL blamed an outside labor recruitment firm for hiring minors. In July, SMART Alabama, a majority-owned unit of Hyundai, was accused of employing children as young as 12 years old at a stamping plant. In a statement, Hyundai said illegal employment practices are not tolerated by any of its entities.A proposed settlement is already in the works. As part of the agreement, SL will stop hiring minors, punish any managers who knew about the practice and temporarily cut ties with any recruiters that hire underage employees. It's unknown how many SL employees were minors or their roles at the company.

For 10 years, the Liberal federal government has denied climate change science and slow-walked the transition to renewable energy. Yesterday's historic defeat for this coalition will change all that and likely lead to an EV surge.'' - They are not hanging about — Labor's Electric Car Discount will begin on 1 July 2022, the beginning of the new financial year, and only 5 weeks away! - ‘'Australians love their cars. Multiple car ownership is common (I used to own three — one for me, one for the wife, and one as a toy). Because of this, passenger cars make up almost 10 per cent of Australia's CO2 emissions. To move Australians from fossil fuel burning cars to electric vehicles powered by renewable energy, Labor proposes exempting EVs from the 5% import tax and the 47% fringe benefits tax (a similar move to the UK government, which led to a spectacular increase in uptake).'' That's about one-fifth of Russia's pre-invasion oil exports, Bloomberg NEF said.' - ‘The oil use avoided by EVs has also doubled since 2015, to about 3% of global demand, according to the analysis.' - While electric cars tend to get most of the attention, the analysis found that other vehicle types accounted for the most oil avoidance. Electric two- and three-wheeled vehicles—which tend to be popular in Asia—accounted for 67% of the oil demand avoided in 2021, according to Bloomberg NEF. - Those vehicles had an outsized impact on oil demand. Next in rank were electric buses, which accounted for 16% of avoided oil demand, followed by passenger vehicles at 13%. The latter were the fastest-growing segment, Bloomberg NEF noted. Show #1399 Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily, you trusted source of information. It's Wednesday 9th March, it's Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to. ELECTRIC CAR PRICES COULD GO UP EVEN AS FUEL PRICES SOAR - As US gas prices hit record highs in the wake of Russia's invasion of Ukraine, it seems like electric vehicles may not be a safe haven for those looking to save money. That's because Russia plays an important part in the production of the nickel that ends up in batteries used by many electric vehicles — a metal that's rocketed up in price even faster than oil. - On February 25th, nickel was trading on the London Metal Exchange for around $24,000 a ton, according to The Wall Street Journal. By March 8th, it was trading at $80,000 (down from a peak of over $100,000), and the London Metal Exchange had suspended trading. - Russia's role in producing the battery-grade nickel used in EVs is a different story — in a Twitter thread breaking down the issue, the CEO of Benchmark Mineral Intelligence says 20 percent of that supply comes from a single Russian company. - According to Bloomberg and Reuters, nickel prices were already becoming a problem for EV manufacturers even before the invasion. - But, like energy policy, battery production and integration is a big ship for automakers to turn around — if the prices of nickel and other metals stay up, it'll be a race to switch to other tech before the shockwaves of higher prices and sanctions make their way through the supply chain. It offers optimum fuel efficiency without compromising driving pleasure thanks to the combination of two Nissan specialisms: advanced battery and motor technology, plus the innovative variable compression ratio internal combustion engine. - As such e-Power is an ideal technology for those who cannot or do not want to take time to recharge with a cable but face a daily urban or suburban drive, and who are ready to make the first move in their transition to a full EV in the future. - The e-POWER system is comprised of a high-output battery that is complemented by a variable compression ratio 1.5-litre three-cylinder turbo-charged petrol engine generating 156hp, a power generator, inverter and 140kW electric motor - The petrol engine generates electricity, which can be transmitted via the inverter to the battery pack, the electric motor or both, according to the driving scenario. - Under deceleration and braking, the kinetic energy is recaptured and channelled back to the battery to optimise efficiency. - e-Pedal Step will brake the Qashqai at 0.2g, enough to illuminate the brake lights, and reduce the speed down to a “creeping” speed, not a complete stop. This ensures low-speed parking manoeuvres are as smooth as possible. EV BATTERIES IN 2030? - Following the announcement of a midium- to long-term strategy by Hyundai Motor and Kia to sell a total of 3.07 million electric vehicles (EV) in 2030, now all eyes are on how the country's leading carmaking group will secure the supply for production on such a large scale. - the annual demand for EV batteries is set to reach a total of 289 gigawatt-hours (GWh) by 2030. This figure is more than the annual battery production capacity of the top three domestic battery makers, LG Energy Solution (155 GWh), SK On (40 GWh) and Samsung SDI (42 GWh), combined. - Experts say that Hyundai and Kia will need to strengthen their partnerships with the three domestic battery companies and global top-tier battery makers, such as CATL in China, to secure a stable supply, and to form a local EV production cluster. - A leading example is the 10GWh battery cell plant that Hyundai Motor Group is scheduled to establish in Indonesia as a joint venture with LGES. Amidst parent company General Motors' continued EV efforts, McCluskey maintained that Chevrolet dealers are looking to beat a formidable rival — Tesla. - “We want to beat Tesla on EVs. We want to meet demand,” McCluskey said. - Being General Motors' high-volume brand, expectations are high that Chevrolet would be producing electric vehicles from numerous price points for consumers. This should be covered by not only the Silverado EV but vehicles like the electric Equinox and Blazer as well. The electric Equinox is expected to start at around $30,000, a price that should make it competitive against popular EVs in the market like the Tesla Model 3 and Model Y. LG Energy Solution was kept as the battery supplier, and added CATL from a Chinese company. Hyundai Motor considered the possibility of discontinuation at one point, but decided to refine its heat transfer system and aimed to compete head-to-head. - On the 6th, Hyundai Motor will launch three fully transformed second-generation models of Kona in Korea next month - The new Kona is larger in size compared to before - CATL was added along with existing battery supplier, LG Energy Solution, in order to improve export competitiveness abroad including China. This is interpreted as a two-track strategy according to the sales region and driving performance specifications. Electric vehicles equipped with CATL batteries are likely to be sold in Korea and other countries. - Although the form-factor of the CATL battery has not been confirmed, it is highly likely that a 'CTP (Cell to Pack)'-based lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery that directly connects the cell to the pack may be equipped instead of the conventional cell to module and pack method. Lithium prices also have increased, more than doubling since year end, as supply fell short of rising demand. - The average EV sold for almost $63,000 in January in the United States, about 35% higher than the overall industry average for all vehicles of just over $46,000, according to research firm Cox Automotive. - Rivian tried last week to push through a 20% price increase on its electric pickups and SUVs to offset higher parts costs, but retreated for those who had already placed orders when faced with a backlash that included possible sale cancellations. - LG Energy Solution (373220.KS), a supplier to Tesla and General Motors Co (GM.N), said raw materials account for 70% or 80% of the cost of its batteries.
