This is Coronavirus 411, the latest COVID-19 info and new hotspots… Just the facts… for Monday May 25th, 2020. Memorial Day weekend saw large gatherings across the country, where social distancing was not always maintained. Prompting the FDA Commissioner to Tweet a reminder that the virus is not yet contained and “It is up to every individual to protect themselves and their community”. A few of these gatherings happened at Lake of the Ozarks in mid-Missouri. Photos surfaced from bars in the area with large crowds, not practicing social distancing and most people without masks. A few hours from Lake of the Ozarks, in Springfield Missouri officials revealed that two hair stylists had tested positive for the virus. After having worked for over a week with symptoms. They potentially exposed 140 clients. Springfield is located in Greene County, where 116 confirmed cases currently exist. Missouri reopened the state in phases, with most counties reopening on May 3rd. The two largest cities in Missouri, St. Louis and Kansas City, lifted the stay at home order on the 18th. According to The New York Times, Missouri is one of 15 states, currently showing a decline in cases, with 197 per 100,000 residents. Over 50% of the states 12,114 cases are in St. Louis County and St. Louis City. A report on national testing strategy was delivered Sunday, and obtained by The Washington Post. In it, the Trump Administration stood by their initial claim that states are primarily responsible for carrying out tests, not the federal government. The U.S. has instituted a travel ban on Brazil. Barring entry to anyone who has been in Brazil within the last 14 days. Japan will end their “state of emergency” tonight. India reinstated domestic flights today after a two-month lockdown. Schools in New South Wales Australia were back in session today. South Africa will begin reopening on June 1st. This is Coronavirus 411, the latest COVID-19 info and new hotspots… Just the facts… for Monday May 18th, 2020. All but two states have lifted some restrictions as of today, including Iowa, where restaurants, gyms and salons opened in 22 counties on Friday. In a recent paper, University of Iowa researchers warned that the virus was likely still spreading and though some lockdown measures did mitigate the virus, they were not “sufficient to prevent uncontained spread” on their own. Reports the Iowa Times Republican. Over the last two weeks, Sioux City Iowa has the highest number of new cases per population with 13.27 per 1000 residents, according to The New York Times. The US Health and Human Services Secretary suggested that the underlying health conditions of Americans, was a major contributor to the death toll from the coronavirus. The Chairman of the Federal Reserve told 60 Minutes that he expects the economy to recover, but it may take until the end of next year. 13 Sailors from the USS Theodore Roosevelt have tested positive for COVID-19 for a second time, after recovering from a first infection, reports The Washington Post. More than 100 countries are calling for an independent evaluation in to the origin of the pandemic, relays CNN. The Mayor of Sao Paolo, Brazil, warned that the health care system in the city is on the verge of collapse, according to The Washington Post. A flight by the Canadian Snowbirds, meant to lift spirits and show support for those fighting COVID-19 ended in a tragic crash Sunday. One member was killed, another injured. Simon Harris says he is "concerned" that complacency may prevent the government from proceeding with their Reopening Ireland Roadmap. The Minister for Health joined Dermot & Dave this morning, where he spoke to the lads about how Ireland are prepared for the lifting of some Covid-19 restrictions on Monday May 18th. It comes as the Department of Health confirmed 15 more deaths from Covid-19 here, while over 23 thousands people have been diagnosed with the virus in Ireland. But, Minister Harris says the despite the drop in the number of cases over the last number of days, people can't be getting complacent because clusters may pop up again, meaning Ireland could once again return to lockdown. The Health Minster has confirmed that he, the government and health officials are looking at other countries where restrictions have been lifted and are trying to avoid a further spike in case. The Health Minister also wants to see new laws introduced to regulate people travelling into our ports and airports. It follows reports Gardai may call to passengers' homes to make sure they're in self-isolation for two weeks. It's after a third of people arriving at Dublin Airport recently, didn't fill in forms properly about where they were staying. Sunday saw the lowest number of reported new cases and deaths in the U.S. since the end of March, relays The Washington Post. But a new model from The University of Washington now predicts over 137,000 deaths by early August. Coronavirus task force member Dr. Fauci, the head of the CDC and the FDA commissioner will participate in some form of self-quarantine after exposure to someone in the White House with the virus. The Vice President was also exposed, but will not quarantine. Johnson and Johnson will start clinical trials on a vaccine in September and if successful hope to produce a billion vaccines next year. As cases in Russia continue to grow, they now have the third highest case count in the world, behind the U.S. and Spain. India recorded their highest single day of new cases, with 4,213. In Wuhan, China, 5 new locally transmitted cases of the virus were confirmed. These are the first locally transmitted cases reported there in over a month. England announced a phased reopening plan, it will not apply to Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland where lockdown measures are still in place.
