The truth about the US Indian boarding school policy has largely been written out of the history books. Started in the 1800s across the US and Canada, Indian Boarding schools were government-funded and often church-run. The goal? Forced assimilation of Native children into white society under the belief of “Kill the Indian, Save the Man,” which still contributes to how we see and treat Indigenous Peoples today. In this episode recorded in 2021, we delve into the haunting legacy of Indian Boarding Schools in North America through the voices of SunRose IronShell and Manapee LaMere, representatives of the Sioux Nation of Indians. About $1.5 million in grants to digitize archival records and collect first-person accounts of Native Americans who attended U.S. government-run boarding schools have been cut as part of the Trump administration's efforts to drastically reshape cultural programs and transform the federal government. Sadly, the marked and unmarked graves of children have been found in the residential school systems of both Canada and the US. The total is now over 6,500 indigenous youth, having died amid accusations of abuse and neglect. Our guests, SunRose IronShell and Manape LaMere, talk about the history of this generational trauma, and how bringing home the remains has become a way to tell the children's stories and hold to account these schools. What she didn't know was that she had just stumbled upon one of the most brutal crimes in Iowa history.

Fred Grandy spent 8 years in the US House as a Republican from Northwest Iowa, but remains best known for the decade he spent playing the character Gopher on the iconic 70s/80s hit television show "The Love Boat". In this conversation, he talks how his small-town Iowa roots mixed with matriculating at tony Eastern boarding schools, how he came to spend time around both President Eisenhower and President Nixon, why an initial flirtation with politics instead pushed him to Hollywood, what drew him back to politics after an incredibly successful run in show business, memories of his 8 years in the House, challenging an incumbent in a 1994 gubernatorial primary, what he's done since leaving office, and one of his current projects portraying Harry Truman on stage in "Give 'Em Hell, Harry". Today's destination: Sioux City, Iowa it's different than Sioux Falls, South Dakota. I visited both of them on the same trip. I left Sioux Falls, South Dakota, and drove to Sioux City, Iowa, to discover what to explore there. What did I find? It's a town of about 85,000 people and a lovely part of mid-America. I felt tradition and a sense of peace and loving people here. I stayed in an Airbnb with a single, lonely woman in her late 70s. She had lovely plants, a backyard garden, and tips on what to do in town while exploring. I spent hours walking around the town and soaking up the beauty. What's different? Sioux City is in northwest Iowa. The Sioux City Art Center showcases work by artists from the Upper Midwest. Nearby, Sioux City Public Museum has local history displays, including a hands-on replica of a fossil dig site. Play-based educational exhibits are the draw at the LaunchPAD Children's Museum. Set inside a dry-docked towboat, the Sergeant Floyd River Museum outlines the shipping history of the Missouri River. It's a slow-paced and friendly town, with traditions and happy people. This will be a good spot if you're looking for a slice of Americana. Today's Mistake- My friend's mistake was Renting a camel in Egypt. My friend was enjoying the adventure of riding a camel. She was all alone and enjoying it. And then, she couldn't get down from the camel unless she paid a guy named Sal. She was trapped. The lesson learned is to Find a reliable person. You can use websites with published prices and keep them. Don't use Sal for your camel rental. Today's Travel Advice-Give, a back massage, get a back massage. When solo, it's hard to make sore muscles feel good. Here's a piece of advice. When you travel, try to relax your neck and shoulder muscles. Stand straight. Don't hunch. And when you want a minute-long clothes-on-back massage, find someone you trust, ask them if they want one, and then give it to them. Then ask them to do the same to you. If they say No, ask someone else. See what happens to your attitude, as this can quickly change your stress level down a few notches.

There are probably few things more irritating, when examining a deponent, than having the defending lawyers repeatedly interrupt and claim they don't understand your questions. It's bad enough when witnesses feign ignorance of the obvious. But the opposing lawyers, too? In this episode, Jim Garrity tackles the subject of lawyers who engage in obstruction-by-colloquy, and how to deal with it. Helpful case citations in the show notes, below. Thanks for listening.SHOW NOTESMusto, et al. v. Transport Workers Union of America, AFL – CIO, et al., 2009 WL 116960 (E. D. Today we introduce a new category of episode, based on your fantastic feedback about things you'd like to get out of the podcast. Episodes in this category will be called Objectionable Objections, and each will focus on a single type of improper objection commonly made by lawyers in depositions.Today's episode zeroes in on "If you know" speaking objections and its poisonous cousins, "If you remember," "If you understand the question," "Don't assume," "Don't speculate," and so on. They'll wreck your depositions if you don't put an immediate stop to them. Thanks for listening! I know that constant objections and unnecessary remarks are unwarranted and frustrate opposing counsel's right to fair examination. I know that speaking objections such as “if you remember,” “if you know,” “don't guess,” “you've answered the question,” and “do you understand the question” are designed to coach the witness and are improper. In this Legacy interview, South Dakota Hall of Fame Board Member Dave Rozenboom sits down with Prudy Calvin, wife of John Calvin, and Jim Roby to discuss the life and legacy of 2019 Inductee, John Calvin. John Calvin was a hard-charging, relentless business executive, advisor to four South Dakota governors, philanthropist, and loyal friend. After a 22 year career in the cement lime division in Sioux City Iowa, Gov. George Mickelson convinced Calvin to move his company to Watertown by offering him the state's first “REDI” loan in 1987. That started a relationship between John and the highest levels of South Dakota's government as he became a key business advisor to governors, U.S. Senators, and U.S. Representatives. John's wife, Prudy, and colleague Jim Roby remember the drive John Calvin had to make sure those around him were thriving. Former Gov. once stated, "John is a man with a generous heart, a mind for business, and a willingness to serve,” Daugaard said. “He has helped many businesses find their home in South Dakota, and many students find success in our state." It's 5.20.1996 and it's time to watch WCW Nitro and WWF Raw to see which show was really the best. This week's episode of Reliving The War marks the end of an era for World Championship Wrestling; not only is this the last Nitro broadcast to run under 2 hours, but this is also the calm before the storm... the final Nitro before Scott Hall's WCW return (leading to the eventual formation of the nWo). The whole Monday Night War was about to drastically change.Raw is showing taped matches from Sioux City Iowa while Nitro is live from Monroe, Louisiana. The Steiner Brothers, Ric Flair, Eddie Guerrero and The Giant all work matches on TNT while The British Bulldog, Stone Cold Steve Austin, Savio Vega and Jake "The Snake" Roberts compete on the USA Network. The 1996 Slamboree results are also covered in this episode.
Full Text of ReadingsFeast of Our Lady of Guadalupe Lectionary: 690AAll podcast readings are produced by the USCCB and are from the Catholic Lectionary, based on the New American Bible and approved for use in the United States _______________________________________The Saint of the day is Our Lady of GuadalupeIn 1531 a "Lady from Heaven" appeared to Saint Juan Diego, a poor Indian from Tepeyac, a hill northwest of Mexico City. She identified herself as the Mother of the True God and instructed him to have the bishop build a church on the site. As a sign for the bishop, she left an image of herself imprinted miraculously on his tilma, a poor quality cactus-cloth. The tilma should have deteriorated within 20 years but shows no sign of decay after over 470 years. To this day it defies all scientific explanations of its origin. In the eyes of Our Lady of Guadalupe on the tilma, we can see reflected what was in front of her in 1531. Her message of love and compassion, and her universal promise of help and protection to all mankind, as well as the story of the apparitions, are described in the "Nican Mopohua," a 16th century document written in the native Nahuatl language. There is reason to believe that at Tepeyac Mary came in her glorified body, and her actual physical hands rearranged the roses in Juan Diegos tilma, which makes this apparition very special. An incredible list of miracles, cures, and interventions are attributed to Our Lady of Guadalupe. Each year an estimated 10 million people visit her Basilica, making her Mexico City home the most popular Marian shrine in the world, and the most visited Catholic church in the world after Saint Peters Basilica in the Vatican.Science cannot explain the tilma, to this day. There is no under sketch, no sizing and no protective over-varnish on the image. Microscopic examination revealed that there were no brush strokes. The image seems to increase in size and change colors due to an unknown property of the surface and substance of which it is made. According to Kodak of Mexico, the image is smooth and feels like a modern day photograph. Produced 300 years before the invention of photography.) The image has consistently defied exact reproduction, whether by brush or camera. Several images can be seen reflected in the eyes of the Virgin. It is believed to be the images of Juan Diego, Bishop Juan de Zummaraga, Juan Gonzales-the interpreter and others. The distortion and place of the images are identical to what is produced in the normal eye, which is impossible to obtain on a flat surface. The stars on Our Lady's Mantle coincide with the constellation in the sky on December 12, 1531. All who have scientifically examined the image of Our Lady over the centuries confess that its properties are absolutely unique and so inexplicable in human terms that the image can only be supernatural.Altogether 24 popes have officially honored Our Lady of Guadalupe. His Holiness Blessed John Paul II visited her Sanctuary four times: on his first apostolic trip outside Rome as Pope in 1979, and again in 1990, 1999 and 2002.The Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe is celebrated on December 12th. In 1999, Blessed John Paul II, in his homily given during the Solemn Mass at the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe, his third visit to the sanctuary, declared the date of December the 12th as a Liturgical Holy Day for the whole continent. During the same visit Pope John Paul II entrusted the cause of life to her loving protection, and placed under her motherly care the innocent lives of children, especially those who are in danger of not being born.Patronage: Americas, Central America, diocese of Colorado Springs Colorado, diocese of Corpus Christi Texas, diocese of Dodge City, Kansas, Estremadura Spain, diocese of Gallup New Mexico, Mexico, diocese of Nashville Tennessee, New Mexico, New World, diocese of Orange California, diocese of Phoenix Arizona, Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, diocese of Sacramento, California, diocese of Sioux City Iowa, Spain. This is Coronavirus 411, the latest COVID-19 info and new hotspots… Just the facts… for Monday May 18th, 2020. All but two states have lifted some restrictions as of today, including Iowa, where restaurants, gyms and salons opened in 22 counties on Friday. In a recent paper, University of Iowa researchers warned that the virus was likely still spreading and though some lockdown measures did mitigate the virus, they were not “sufficient to prevent uncontained spread” on their own. Reports the Iowa Times Republican. Over the last two weeks, Sioux City Iowa has the highest number of new cases per population with 13.27 per 1000 residents, according to The New York Times. The US Health and Human Services Secretary suggested that the underlying health conditions of Americans, was a major contributor to the death toll from the coronavirus. The Chairman of the Federal Reserve told 60 Minutes that he expects the economy to recover, but it may take until the end of next year. 13 Sailors from the USS Theodore Roosevelt have tested positive for COVID-19 for a second time, after recovering from a first infection, reports The Washington Post. More than 100 countries are calling for an independent evaluation in to the origin of the pandemic, relays CNN. The Mayor of Sao Paolo, Brazil, warned that the health care system in the city is on the verge of collapse, according to The Washington Post. A flight by the Canadian Snowbirds, meant to lift spirits and show support for those fighting COVID-19 ended in a tragic crash Sunday. One member was killed, another injured. In Italy restaurants, salons and churches reopened today, as cases continue to decline there. The locations of hotspots and U.S and Country diagnoses in a moment. In Episode 7 it's time for TRUE HOLLYWOOD STORIES of grace and valour! (No #meToo politics, gender-prefs, or virtue-signalling!) We hear an amazing story about how uber producer Cassian Elwes (Thank You For Smoking, The Butler) had wanted to be involved with Dallas Buyers Club for over a decade, and how he got his chance to be a part of history by saving the film in the last moments before production was about to crash from financial fallout by calling in a 20 year old favour from a French backpacker. We then travel to the dark recesses of Lower Fourth Street in Sioux City, Iowa in the late 1950's and early 60's, long before YOUPORN and PORNHUB, to discover the Cornhusker Porn King's secret hideaway I frequented as a 10-year-old pinball addict. Through the portal of time we jump in some Hansen Ski Boots and onto the ski slopes of Aspen, Vail, and Lake Eldora (Lake Eldora???) at University of Colorado in the 70's just trying to keep our feet warm, and then out to Hollywood again (via a New York restaurant) where a down-and-out-writer subsisting as a waiter gets la mano de Dios and a studio deal with Tom Hardy attached for an Al Capone feature....but that's not the story I want to tell. I want to tell you about the character behind the waiter. In between this we find how I escaped Vietnam and how the world would be a better place if John Kerry and John McCain had spent more time there....like...forever...and opened up a bed and breakfast together. And we revisit The Dinner Party time-travel experiment, which hit the 21 day deadline TODAY (though you can start anytime) to check in on our time-travellers, and explain why it's time to send China back to the Stone Age. Tired? Well, we lighten it all up with Don Rickles' tutorial on how to snub Frank Sinatra, and how it can help you with your relationships today! And we put on our waders and gumboots and dive down into the sewer looking for Nancy Pelosi in her natural habitat. All this plus your regular features, Scorpio Full Moon debrief, and why Louis Vuitton and Off-White's Virgil Abloh is the coolest cat around. #ScottFeinberg #danbongino #cassianelwes #matthewmcconaughey #scottyCam #neilwhittaker #hotelduCap #cannes #voltage #NicolasChartier #sonsOfMary #ElwoodBathers #offwhite #VirgilAbloh #LouisVuitton #ValentinoGaravani #pantryBrighton #RoyalBrightonYachtClub #THR #TheWrap #Variety #ChinaliedPeopleDied #Patagonia #HotelduCap-Eden-Roc #InterContinentalCarltonCannes #cannesFilmFestival #igluxtravel #neilswidey #jeffjacoby #bostonglobe

On this episode, Alysa from Fataliteas and Best Forevers Podcasts guest co-hosts to discuss the cold case of the Sioux City 3. On the morning of December 3, 1974 a mother and a neighbor drove to her son's home in Sioux City Iowa. It was the second day her son and his roommate hadn't shown up to work; which was unusual. As she entered through the door- she was greeted with a gruesome scene of 3 young adults murdered. Dr. Steve Meyer – Pediatric Orthopedic Surgeon in Sioux City Iowa, Author of the book "Answer the Call", and Founder, along with his wife Dana, of the Christ-centered, mission-driven ministry Siouxland Tanzania Educational Medical Ministries (STEMM), an inter-denominational Christian ministry in 1996. Steve opens up about surviving dark valleys in his personal life, the perfectly timed, unplanned encounter with a patient that transformed Steve’s life forever. And, how hearing, listening and heeding his calling led him on a journey of impacting lives in ways that are evidence of divine intervention by the Lord. Episode Highlights: How does Dr. Steve Meyer define having a calling in life? What gets in people’s way of heeding their calling? We get called by God throughout each day, often through the requests of others. It isn’t about the ‘what,’ it is about the ‘why.’ How did Dr. Steve Meyer realize that he was called to an entrepreneurial path? Keep saying ‘yes’ to God’s call. Dr. Steve Meyer shares a moment of having his faith tested. How would Dr. Steve Meyer want to encourage guys in the early stages of heeding their calling? Spiritual warfare is an ongoing struggle of accountability in our lives. Everyday is a new chance to start over. Be the clay instead of the potter. Recognize the joy in every task that God calls us to take on. What are the three non-negotiable pieces of wisdom that Dr. Steve Meyer would pass on to future generations? Key Points & Quotes: STEMM Mistry volunteers have performed nearly 1000 orthopedic general and ENT surgeries in a country that has one physician for every 100,000 people. There can be no fear in complete faith. Dr. Steve Meyer’s definition of ‘meekness’ is power under control. “I think we are so afraid of failure in our society because we have such an immediate society now.” – Dr. Steve Meyer “Satan’s greatest tool to defeat us is to distract us.” – Dr. Steve Meyer “I fully believe ultimately when we get to Heaven, God is absolutely, totally uninterested in our results. He is interested in our intent.” – Dr. Steve Meyer Resources Mentioned: Stemm.org Facebook: STEMM1996 heedyourcalling.com

Twenty-four Airmen from the Iowa Air National Guard’s 185th Air Refueling Wing are on state active duty, patrolling levees along the Iowa side of the Missouri river. The Airmen are patrolling large levees constructed just a few weeks ago near downtown Sioux City. This week the Army Corps of Engineers began releasing the maximum amount of water possible from the Gavins Point Dam upstream from Sioux City. The Airmen are working shifts in order to patrol the levee 24 hours a day. They are watching for areas in the levee that may begin to weaken and they are insuring the city water wells in the area are kept free from flooding river water. Master Sgt. Ron Hanson is a crew chief with the 185th Air Refueling Wing in Sioux City, Iowa. He is working as the day shift supervisor on levee patrol.
