Host Adam Burke was back on the mic to talk some KBO with the Thursday May 28 edition of The Bettor’s Box. This is Coronavirus 411, the latest COVID-19 info and new hotspots… Just the facts… for Thursday May 28th, 2020. In less than 4 months, the U.S. became the first country to report more than 100,000 deaths due to the virus. More than a quarter of all global deaths. Confirmed case counts here climb toward 1.7 million. Four states have crossed the 100,000 cases mark: New York, New Jersey, Illinois and yesterday California. Of the 101,874 confirmed cases in California, 48,700 are in Los Angeles County. The second highest, is Riverside, considered part of the greater Los Angeles area, with 7,252 cases. On Tuesday, the state reported its highest one-day total yet, 3,215 cases. According to the LA Times, Officials attribute the spike to a lag in reporting over the holiday weekend. California was an early adopter of lockdown measures and continues to be diligent with restrictions. In late April, Los Angeles offered free COVID-19 testing to all residents, whether or not they had symptoms. California continues to increase testing. The state has started to slowly lift restrictions, but The Governor has warned, this doesn’t mean the threat of the virus is gone. Coronavirus Task Force Member, Dr. Fauci, said a second wave of infection can be avoided if the U.S. opens correctly. With “clear and effective” testing, tracing and isolation measures, reports CNN. The weekly unemployment claims were released today, there were another 2.1 million filings. Boeing will lay off more than 12,000 workers. Some took voluntary departures. A company spokesperson said additional rounds of layoffs will occur over the next few months. For the first time since mid-March, Vermont has no hospitalized coronavirus patients. This is Coronavirus 411, the latest COVID-19 info and new hotspots… Just the facts… for Thursday May 21st, 2020. The Mayor of Montgomery, Alabama said the city faces a shortage of ICU beds. Forcing some patients to be transferred to hospitals out of town. Alabama is one of 7 states where cases have increased over the last two weeks. On May 1st, there were 226 new cases, yesterday there were 676. There are 266 cases per 100,000 residents in Alabama, putting it ahead of more populous states like California, Washington, Florida and Texas. A model from the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, warns that communities throughout the south that may have opened too quickly could see a new wave of infection in the next few weeks.Columbia University released a study noting that had the U.S. enacted social distancing measures one week earlier in March, 36,000 lives may have been saved. Had they been in place two weeks earlier, it is estimated that 83% of the fatalities could have been avoided. Harvard Medical School researchers relayed that the 25 monkeys they immunized with DNA vaccines, created antibodies that protected them from the virus. The higher the level of antibodies, the stronger the protection. Virginia, Texas, Georgia and Vermont have been combining COVID-19 tests results, which look for active infection, with antibody test results, which look for past exposure. According to CNN, combining the two overstates the testing ability of the state. Global cases passed 5 million, as the world saw the largest one day increase with 106,000 new cases according to the WHO. The Director of the European Center for Disease Prevention and Control has warned that Europe must be ready for a second wave of the virus, saying “The question is when and how big”, reports The Guardian. In Afghanistan, The Health Ministry relayed it is out of hospital beds for COVID-19 patients. The Bolivian Health Minister has been arrested on corruption charges that he grossly overpaid for a contract to buy ventilators for hospitals.
