Welcome to Ep. 1468, How to Understand Consumer Wine Buying Behaviour? Stop listening to pseudo-experts, Gurvinder Bhatia IWE, Marianna Velenosi (mod) This is the Wine2Wine Business Forum 2022 Series. About today' session: In order to communicate effectively with wine consumers, one must first understand human behaviour and accept that before someone is a wine consumer, they are a consumer. The wine industry too often fails to understand that making wine accessible is not about stratifying wine based on quality, but instead about appealing to a consumer's (ie. individual's) need to feel that they are benefiting from their purchasing decisions. All wine apps and data relied on to analyze wine buying behaviour rely on past purchases and predominantly well known wine labels that have wide distribution. The result is a narrowing and homogenization of the types of wines in the pool either recommended to consumers or relied upon by the wine industry to make decisions about consumers. But if the actual intent (as the wine industry likes to message) is to encourage consumers to explore, try and drink better (understand that quality and price are not mutually exclusive) then the wine industry needs to not just change the manner in which it communicates with consumers, but in many ways needs to return to the manner in which it communicated with consumers 20-30 years ago. The wine industry is in many ways its own worst enemy. About the Speakers Gurvinder Bhatia IWE Gurvinder Bhatia is the editor-in-chief and publisher for Quench Magazine – North America's longest-running and Canada's most widely distributed wine and food publication. Although he has written for Quench for over two decades and been on the editorial team for the past 15 years, Gurvinder purchased the magazine in 2021, and is committed to the magazine's evolution to be a much truer representation of our society. Gurvinder is also the wine columnist for Global Television Edmonton, an international wine judge and the president of Vinomania Consulting. Gurvinder was the owner/founder of Vinomania wine boutique (opened in 1995, closed in 2016), which was named on numerous occasions among the 20 best wine stores in Canada. In addition, Gurvinder was the wine columnist for CBC Radio for 11 years and is certified by Vinitaly International Academy as one of only 15 Italian Wine Experts in the world. Gurvinder is a recovering lawyer and in addition to his law degree (JD), he also earned his Masters Degree in Business Administration (MBA) with honours. In 2015, Gurvinder was named by Alberta Venture Magazine as one of Alberta's 50 Most Influential People. Connect Instagram: @gurvindervino_onthego Twitter: @EdmontonWineGuy About the Moderator Marianna Velenosi Marianna Velenosi was born in 1993 to a family of winemakers in the Marche region, more specifically in Ascoli Piceno. Since her childhood she has been used to live in the vineyard and she was raised in the winery by her parents Angela and Ercole Velenosi, founders in 1984 of the winery of the same name. After graduating in Business Administration and completing a Master's in Marketing at Bocconi University, Marianna began her career in the Castel Group, specifically in the Nicolas distribution chain in Switzerland. Welcome to Episode 1266, of #everybodyneedsabitofscienza. Today Stevie is with our favorite Professore Attilio Scienza in Campania, in Irpinia. They discuss the grape varieties, the territory, and the wine evolution of this important region. Scienza tells the three most important things to know about Campania wines and its territory that has a great future in the wine world. The Consortium “Tutela dei Vini dell'Irpinia” was established as a voluntary, non-profit association, on 2003. Less than 50 kilometres from Naples, thanks to the conformation of its territory, Irpinia is a land devoted to the production of fine wines. The peculiar orography of the territory results in particular microclimates, varying from area to area, which allow different types of wines to be produced. In fact, Irpinia, today, is the province in Campania with the highest concentration of vineyards and can boast the presence of three DOCG wines: Taurasi, Greco di Tufo and Fiano di Avellino. The mission of the Consortium is to protect and enhance these wines, vine products, vineyards of Irpinia as a a national cultural heritage. He has been the lead for many national research projects in the field of physiology, agricultural techniques, and vine genetics. These sessions are recorded from Clubhouse and replayed here on the Italian Wine Podcast! Listen in on this series as Italian Wine Ambassadors all over the world chat with Stevie and their chosen wine producer. Which producer would you interview if you had your pick? About about today's guest host: Jay Di Donato is an Italian Wine Ambassador through Vinitaly International Academy, WSET 3, and a certified Italian Wine Specialist from the North American Sommelier Association. He has worked part-time as a sommelier and at various wine retail and restaurants in Chicago and San Diego since 2016. Jay commissioned as a Surface Warfare Officer in the United States Navy in 2012. He deployed multiple times to the Mediterranean Sea, Red Sea, and Indian Ocean. In 2019 he earned his law degree from Loyola University of Chicago School of Law and still serves in the Navy as a Judge Advocate General, stationed in San Diego. Traveling throughout Europe with the Navy spurred his love of wine and he hopes to be stationed in Italy again soon!" To learn more visit: https://www.linkedin.com/in/julian-didonato/details/skills/ About today's guest producer: Marco Zani is one of the newer additions to the Selection Massale portfolio, but he already feels very much part of the family. The family domaine was put together by his father, who bought the castle (yep, there really is one, and Marco makes his wine with in its 10th Century cellars) and surrounding vineyards, which are situated on the lower slopes of the mountains that tower either side of the little town of Rovereto. Although his father was not a vigneron (like most growers in the village, he sold each years' crop to the cooperative), Marco knew from an early age that he wanted to make wine, and since 1989, Marco has been (fanatically) tending the vineyards and making the wine at Castel Noarna, as well as helping his wife to run the best hotel/restaurant in town. The castle and the vineyards lie on east/southeast facing slopes at about 350 meters above sea level -- these are high alititude vineyards, similar to those of Belluard in the Haute-Savoie, and Knauss and Beurer in Swabia. The soils, which Marco has worked organically since 2008 are rich in minerals and poor in organic matter, and exactly what's needed for making of grands vins. Limestone, our favorite, quartz, slate, silt. Welcome to Episode 1005 Cynthia Chaplin interviews Alice Achayo, in this installment of Voices, on the Italian Wine Podcast. More about today's guest: Alice Achayo is the founder of the Wine Linguist. A business she started recently that focuses on expanding wine language through global cuisines. Having worked in different parts of the wine industry over the last last 6 years, she wanted to change what she saw was lacking: representation of the global majority's language, culture, and cuisine. For far too long the wine language has been centered around Eurocentric and Western society. This is one of the many reasons why wine has always been intimidating, exclusive, and uninviting. While there are various ways to diversify the industry, a core focus of the Wine Linguist will be on global cuisine and wine pairing. For me the beauty of the wine language is that it relies on our individual sensory memories. Foods we've grown up eating and the scents that surrounded us, play a massive role in our wine vocabularies. Exposing our palate to other cultures' cuisines will allow for us to learn new ways to talk about wine that is more inclusive and relatable to the majority. Welcome to Episode 994 Cynthia Chaplin interviews Alice Feiring, in this installment of Voices, on the Italian Wine Podcast. More about today's guest: Alice Feiring is an American journalist and author, for several years a wine and travel columnist for Time magazine, and known as an advocate for "natural wine". In addition to contributions to publications such as The New York Times, New York Magazine, San Francisco Chronicle, LA Times, Condé Nast Traveler and Forbes Traveler, her blog "The Feiring Line" (formerly: "Veritas in Vino") is considered one of the best in its specific category, and her voice described by Mike Steinberger as part of a new wave of "real flowering of high-quality wine journalism". In 2011, Feiring was selected as "Online Communicator of the Year" by the Louis Roederer International Wine Writer Awards. On Sept. 30, 2020, Feiring was named a Knight of the French Order of Agricultural Merit. Her first book, published in May 2008, The Battle for Wine and Love: Or How I Saved the World from Parkerization, described as "an opinionated look at the fight to preserve authenticity and diversity in wine", due to its perceived "declaration of war" against critic Robert Parker found some controversy well before its date of release. Reviewing the book, Eric Asimov later wrote, "Ms. Feiring is an uncompromising judge of wine and people who can no more stomach a lover's preference for a wine she abhors than she can the presence of a microwave in her kitchen." Feiring's critical statements against California wine as "overblown, over-alcoholed, over-oaked, overpriced and over-manipulated" have also sparked controversy. In 2011, Feiring published Naked Wine: Letting Grapes Do What Comes Naturally. Her 2016 book For the Love of Wine: My Odyssey Through the World's Most Ancient Wine Culture,[16] explores the wine of Georgia. In 2017, Feiring published The Dirty Guide to Wine: Following Flavor from Ground to Glass. Her most recent book Natural Wine For The People: What It Is, Where to Find It, How to Love It was released in August 2019. Welcome to Episode 984 Cynthia Chaplin interviews Maya Dalla Valle, in this installment of Voices, on the Italian Wine Podcast. More about today's guest: Maya was destined to be a winemaker. In 1986, the year she was conceived, her parents, Naoko and Gustav, made their first vintage of estate-grown Cabernet Sauvignon. The following year—the year she was born—they planted Maya's Vineyard, a 5-acre block of Cabernet Sauvignon that has become one of the most revered winegrowing sites in America. In 1992, this remarkable vineyard yielded a wine that would go on to earn Dalla Valle's first perfect 100-point score from legendary critic Robert Parker. Growing up at Dalla Valle in the company of winemakers like Heidi Barrett, Tony Soter and Mia Klein infused Maya's formative years with a sense of place and purpose that has come to define her adult life. In 2017, Dalla Valle became a true multigenerational winery, when Maya joined the winery as director. Committed to earning her place in the family business before coming to Dalla Valle, Maya holds a master's degree in viticulture and enology from Cornell University, and a master's of business and science degree in vineyard and winery management from France's prestigious Bordeaux Science Agro. Equally important, Maya gained invaluable hands-on winemaking experience at Ornellaia e Masseto, Bodegas Rolland, Pétrus and Château Latour. “Dalla Valle is my home. It is also my family's legacy,” says Maya. “I am so excited to be working alongside my mom. Dalla Valle is her life's work, and what she has created is remarkable. I also know that the greatest wineries are judged in terms of decades and generations, and that our story is still being written. I am honored to be carrying our family's legacy into a second generation.” To learn more about today's guest visit: https://www.dallavallevineyards.com/people/maya-dalla-valle/ info@DallaValleVineyards.com About today's Host: Cynthia Chaplin is a Vinitaly International Academy certified Italian Wine Ambassador, a professional sommelier with Fondazione Italiana Sommelier, a member of Le Donne del Vino, and a Professor of Italian wine and culture.
