Part 1: https://youtu.be/8G6ohGFNQLs Part 2: https://youtu.be/sYnP19jQUyw In part 3 of our new series, 'Mourning Glory', we explore grieving through the lens of Numbers 13 and Genesis 32. Using these stories as perspective filters, we explore topics such as: 1) What is our Promised Land in the context of grieving? 2) What are the giants in our life and how we do conquer them? 3) Like Jacob, how do we wrestle with God the right way during our suffering? These are only a few of the questions we put under the microscope in this episode... Music creds: "Solar Ride" by Jamie Peter Fonti (APRA)
Meet Jennifer Thomas and Andrea Bear co-host of the Mourning Glory Grief Podcast as they share their love of writing and their shared experiences with grief. This first season includes some excellent episodes that caters to anyone who has experienced loss whether its been recent or years ago. Both ladies dive deep into a variety of topics centered around loss, faith, and healing. In this inaugural season Andrea and Jennifer have lined up some amazing speakers, as well contributing Catholic Grief therapist Rosaline Cruz-Rine who regularly offers clinical and spiritual advice on how to navigate through loss. You'll find that despite the feelings that often come with grief, there is support in community. And as Jennifer and Andrea hope to provide a place where listeners know they are never alone.
Andrea Bear felt paralyzed by grief when her mom passed away five years ago. She refers to this loss as an unplaced love that never goes away. Andrea has always been a "doer" but discovered there was nothing she could do to escape missing her beloved mother. Andrea listened as God drew her into prayer and to just "being" with Him. Andrea has experienced profound healing from God through prayer. She refers to this purification as "life-changing" and "a turning point" in her life. Andrea is the author of “The Grieving Daughter's Club" and will soon be starting a new podcast called "Mourning Glory."
An NBA legend on being Better Than Before - Jane's stellar guest today is basketball superstar Alonzo Mourning, a seven-time All-Star who was one of the greatest players in Miami Heat history and an Olympic gold medalist for the USA. Currently the Vice President of Player Development for the Heat, he and Jane talk all about his storied career and challenging but ultimately uplifting medical history. They also discuss his vegan diet, fitness program and commitment to healthy living in general. Furthermore, Alonzo shares his hard-earned wisdom for winning in life. And the encouraging counsel he gives to the children of South Florida through his charity, the Mourning Family Foundation, to educate and create the opportunity for them to excel. Equally important to him, however, is his partnership with Vertex Pharmaceuticals on a new campaign called Power Forward, which brings awareness to APOL-1-mediated kidney disease (AMKD). Alonzo himself suffers from this disease and underwent a kidney transplant right in the middle of his playing career! All in all, listeners will come away with a deeper appreciation of the value of devotion to hard work and good health care --and great doctors-- and feeling Better Than Before.

The Bible promises that we'll have trouble in this life. But God has a bigger plan for us -- and out of our mourning comes His glory. Only He can provide the kind of lasting joy that persists even when tragedy strikes. And when He puts that gladness in our hearts that those around us may not understand, nothing will be able to steal it from us.

Jewelry designer Heather Lawrenz recommends paying a visit to Flaten Art Museum on the campus of St. Olaf Collage to see an exhibition of work by Cuban-American artist Coco Fusco. “Swimming on Dry Land/Nadar en seco” features video and installations that explore what’s missing from Cuban culture: the immigrants who fled the country, artists who were suppressed along with their work, and a coherent history. Lawrenz says the show inspired her to think about how her sense of home and place has shaped her identity. The exhibition runs through Dec. 18. Artist Danielle Pebbles thoroughly enjoyed the latest show at Rogue Buddha Gallery in Minneapolis. “Mourning Glory” is an exploration of death through the eyes of more than 40 artists. Pebbles says the show features work both sad and celebratory, and got her thinking about how our culture avoids talking about death, and how she might break the silence with loved ones. On view through Nov. 30. MCAD’s director of gallery and exhibition programs Kerry Morgan is headed to White Page Gallery to see Sean Connaughty’s latest show dedicated to Lake Hiawatha. For the past five years Connaughty has been working with volunteers to remove trash from the lake, sort it and source it. Their findings are combined with drawings, photographs and documents that testify to the critical habitat the lake provides. “Lake Hiawatha - Anthropocenic Midden Survey - Final Report” runs one week only - Nov. 15-23.
Avery Applegate is a jewelry artist who loves hunting for forgotten treasures with a dark twist. She mixes these findings into assemblage art jewelry. Avery explores nature, sidewalks, and thrift/antique shops to collect treasures such as photographs, vintage jewelry, bones, and typewriter keys. Her original jewelry line, Just My Type Jewelry, features vintage typewriter keys. After attending the Ghoultide Gathering Halloween art show, she was inspired to add a darker, more serious line. She named it Mourning Glory Jewelry. Avery taught art for three decades. As a child, Avery’s mother needed to check Avery’s pockets before doing her laundry. Avery would bring home shells, bones, nightcrawlers, and more from her explorations of the small family farm. Avery’s mother nurtured her collecting habit. She taught her how to make a ring out of a bone, which Avery still has. Avery’s mother sparked her love of Halloween, reading her bedtime stories that spun-up her imagination. She loved coloring in a book of Brothers Grimms tales. Avery was drawn to creepy and weird shows like the Addams Family, Dark Shadows, The Twilight Zone, and more. Avery enjoys working on jewelry because it enables her to tell stories with all the small things she’s collected over the years. For example, an old belt buckle can become a frame for a photograph. Avery shared her sources. When she is out in nature, she looks for things that call to her. She is often found hunting in thrift and antique shops. She got her job at Rusty’s Antiques because she shopped there so much. People will drop off things to her. Once she came home and found an old typewriter on her doorstep. The rarest and most valuable items in her collection are pieces of Victorian mourning jewelry. Victorians would take hair from a deceased loved-one and have it made into jewelry. The weirdest place Avery has ever searched for antiques was an old privy (outhouse). People used to throw trash down their privy like bottles and crocks. To clarify -all the nasty bits were fully decomposed by the time Avery dug around in them. Abandoned houses call to Avery. She gets permission to explore them now after being arrested for entering one without permission back in her college days. Avery connects with the people in old photographs. She is especially drawn to the eyes. She collects photographs, tin types, and daguerreotypes. She passes by a lot of pictures – she doesn’t connect to them all. She thinks the people from the past would be appalled to know their photographs are now being cut-up for art. Avery met Wes Cowan from the TV show, Antiques Roadshow. She was wearing a tin type she had made into a necklace. She asked Wes what he thought about it. He said old photographs should be kept out and enjoyed. Avery has a sense of humor about couples. If they don’t look happy, she has no issues using them in separate art pieces. The first Halloween art show Avery attended was Ghoultide Gathering. As a diehard, she would get in line at 3:00 a.m. In 2016, she showed the organizer, Scott Smith, some of her work. The next year the show transitioned to Bewitching Peddlers of Halloween and Avery was invited to be a participating artist. One of her favorite pieces is a hand-blown eyeball from a German doll. She set it in the center of a 1940’s circle pin. The collector who purchased it wore it on his black tuxedo. The name Mourning Glory is a nod to Victorian mourning, which has always fascinated her. She likes the ritual of that period, but she’s thankful she lives in our time. Some Victorian death rituals are reemerging, like green burials, post-mortem photography, and family involvement. Follow Avery on her Facebook page, https://www.facebook.com/mourninggloryjewelry/. She also sells through Indigenous Craft in Cincinnati. She will also be a Bewitching Peddlers of Halloween artist this year.
“Not only does the wearing of black protect the mourner from unnecessary levity; but it reminds everyone else that they’ll eventually be in that position, too, and it stirs empathy.” Debra Mancoff, a scholar of art, culture, and fashion, walks us through the conventions and sartorial semiotics of mourning in Victorian England and America, and tells us how attitudes toward death and dying have changed over the years. --- Intro music: "Two Types of Awakenings" by Nheap
