Innovation, AI, and next-gen leaders must successfully adapt to constantly changing landscapes.Accounting Influencerswith Rob BrownThe accounting profession stands at a crossroads, faced with technological disruption, shifting business models, and an evolving workforce. In a recent episode of the Accounting Influencers podcast, industry leaders Bobby Lane, CEO of Factotum; Tony Szczepaniak, CEO of LEA Global; and Rick Richardson, CEO & Founder of Richardson Media & Technologies, engaged in a dynamic discussion about the state of accounting, the biggest threats facing the profession, and the opportunities ahead.More Accounting Influencers with Rob Brown hereSzczepaniak emphasizes the pressing issue of talent shortages, noting that regulatory bodies are exploring new ways to accelerate certifications and attract non-traditional candidates. He acknowledges that while some firms are innovating, others remain stagnant. "The firms that can clearly articulate their value proposition and adapt to strategic conversations internally will thrive," he asserts.Richardson paints a stark picture of a divided profession, describing it as a "sandwich" where younger professionals are innovating on one side while senior partners near retirement show little interest in transformative change. He warns that attracting young talent requires a shift in perception: "We need to do a better job of selling what accounting really is and what it offers to young professionals. Right now, they see better financial incentives and career growth elsewhere."Lane echoes this concern but offers a different perspective, citing that young professionals are still entering the profession but are more likely to view it as a short-term stepping stone rather than a long-term career path. "They want to gain qualifications, move into financial planning and analysis, corporate finance, or even start their own businesses," he explains. The panel agrees that technology, particularly AI and automation, will significantly impact the profession but not in the way many fear. "People panicked that cloud accounting would eliminate accountants. It didn't. Instead, it shifted the value from processing to advisory services," Lane argues. He sees a similar transition with AI: "The challenge now is for accountants to become translators of numbers, helping businesses interpret and act on financial insights."

In this 101st episode of Sonitotum with Matthew Wayne Selznick, the podcast about making stuff (mostly writing), finding success as we each define it for ourselves, and staying healthy and sane in the process… it’s a conversation with science fiction author AJ Super! AJ Super is the author of the Seven Stars Saga, a trilogy published by Aethon Books and Blackstone Audio. Writing full time, they devour fantasy and science fiction in every medium, and even experiment with writing and reading other speculative fiction now and again. They earned two Bachelors’ degrees from the University of Idaho in the Creative Writing and Theater programs, and they have been an author since they were old enough to write (and illustrate) a stapled-together ABC book, which is still packed away in a box of childhood memorabilia. AJ is inspired by Ursula K. Le Guin, Anne McCaffery, Octavia E. Butler, Mercedes Lackey, and other amazing female science fiction and fantasy authors. They are active in several different writing communities and an SFWA member. They currently live in Idaho with their fuzz-brained kitties, supportive spouse, and a ridiculous collection of slippers. ~ from AJ Super’s official site Across this evergreen conversation we talk parental influence, everyone’s emo phase, writing for the ADHD reader, the negative consequences of a fast book release schedule, the ol’ planner / pantser dilemma, the meaning of art, emulating our literary heroes, maintaining a healthy creative (and life!) routine, and much, much more. This episode was recorded on May 28, 2024. The conversation with AJ Super was recorded on January 22, 2024. Links and Topics Mentioned in This Episode AJ Super’s publisher is Aethon Books. Their audiobooks come from Blackstone. Visit AJ Super’s Patreon page! A few non-genre authors come up in our discussion: Flannery O’Connor Raymond Carver Charles Bukowski In particular: Factotum, Love is a Dog from Hell, and The Days Run Away Like Wild Horses Over the Hills Ernest Hemingway F. Scott Fitzgerald and The Great Gatsby Sun Valley, Idaho, where Hemingway is buried. I bring up Julian May‘s work as an example of wonderful books that, due to changing social mores, may be overlooked today. Edgar Rice Burroughs and Sax Rhomer, too. That favorite James Baldwin quote of mine is mentioned via Octavia Butler’s (likely unintentional) paraphrase. Next episode: a solo update and news episode. Står tiden virkelig stille i denne historien? Er det egentlig slalomstøvler folk går med? Hvorfor sniffer menn på armhulen til andre menn? Malcolm X led many lives within his 39 years: as a bereaved but precocious child; as an imprisoned convict; as a firebrand spokesperson for the Nation of Islam and Black nationalism; and ultimately as one of the most pivotal figures of the Civil Rights movement. Today, he continues to inspire passion and controversy, his legacy as nuanced as the man himself.Anthony Davis's opera “X: The Life and Times of Malcolm X” seeks to gather Malcolm X's many identities and hold them together in the way only an artistic work can. When the piece was premiered by New York City Opera in 1986, it broke ground not just for its unique melding of jazz and blues idioms with contemporary classical traditions, but also for the choice made by Davis and his cousin, the librettist Thulani Davis, to situate recent history on the operatic stage. It turns out that a life as dramatic and urgent as Malcolm X's is ripe for opera. In the aria “You Want The Story, But You Don't Want To Know,” Anthony and Thulani Davis take the occasion of a police interrogation to let Malcolm X's character reflect on the tragedies and injustices that have shaped his life up to that moment — and, in his refusal to deliver “easier” narratives, to presage the often tumultuous search for truth and righteousness that would direct his life in years to come. Host Rhiannon Giddens and her guests explore the drama and the passion of Malcolm X's life and its inherent musicality upon the Metropolitan Opera's premiere of this modern classic.THE GUESTSIt may have taken nearly forty years for composer Anthony Davis to see the Metropolitan Opera stage “X,” but he's kept himself busy in the interim. This prolific composer, which The New York Times described as “the dean of African-American opera composers,” is also known for “Amistad,” “Wakonda's Dream,” and “The Central Park Five,” the latter of which won him a Pulitzer Prize in 2020. If anyone was born to be a musician, it's Davis: People tell him that the first time he played the piano was as a baby sitting in the lap of jazz pianist Billy Taylor. Grammy Award-winning baritone Will Liverman was described by The Washington Post as a “voice for this historic moment.” Portraying Malcolm X in the Metropolitan Opera's production of “X: The Life and Times of Malcolm X” is only his most recent artistic triumph. Others include his breakout performance as Charles in Terence Blanchard's “Fire Shut Up In My Bones” and the premiere of “The Factotum,” an opera he both starred in and co-created. His hope for “X” is to help “kill some of the preconceived notions about who Malcolm X was and find the humanity in him.”Zaheer Ali is the executive director of the Hutchins Institute for Social Justice at the Lawrenceville School and something of a Malcolm X expert (a Malcolm X-pert?). He served as the project manager of the Malcolm X Project at Columbia University and his work on the Civil Rights icon has been featured in documentaries like Netflix's “Who Killed Malcolm X?” and CNN's “Witnessed: The Assassination of Malcolm X.” He traces his fascination with Malcolm X back to an assignment given by his eleventh-grade English teacher.

We have long been hearing about various threats to bees and other pollinators, including Colony Collapse Disorder, new pathogens and bee pests, environmental and nutritional stressors, and pesticides such as neonicotinoids. Impacts to Queen Bees and their genetics are also a concern. According to the non-profit organization, HoneyLove, cities are apparently the last refuge for the Honeybee. HoneyLove [http://honeylove.org] is dedicated to urban beekeeping, educational outreach, and advocating for the health and well-being of honey bees. This week, we welcome Ceebs Bailey, HoneyLove's Factotum, and Kristy Pace, their Volunteer Director. We owe a debt to bees as they pollinate 80-90% of the world's flowering plants, including more than 130 types of fruits and vegetables. One out of every three or four bites of food you eat was made possible by bees and the honeybee is responsible for $15 billion in U.S. agricultural crops annually. While some are concerned about the health of bees for economic reasons and threats to food production on this continent, the reality is our fate is directly connected to bees and their giveaway to the ecosystem at large, in vitalizing the growth of trees, flowers, and a host of other plants; they are essential to creating and sustaining biodiversity on the planet. The average human on this continent consumes roughly 1.31 lbs of honey per year which translates to a bee visiting 2+ million flowers and flying 55,000+ miles. May we offer up more love, gratitude and respect to the Honeybee and learn how we can contribute to their continuance. For an extended interview and other benefits, become an EcoJustice Radio patron at https://www.patreon.com/posts/honeylove-with-84482060 HoneyLove.org [http://honeylove.org] is a Los Angeles-based educational non-profit focused on teaching the public about honey bees and aspiring hobbyists about safe and respectful urban beekeeping. Ceebs Bailey is a writer in West L.A. who started out a few years ago with a modest tumbling composter outside the kitchen door and now has raised beds in the front yard, a flock of chickens and six beehives around the city. Kristy Pace has been cultivating community through theatre, artivism, and volunteerism for over 20 years. She is a teacher and environmental activist associated with SoCal 350, Climate Reality San Fernando Valley, and of course, Honey Love. Carry Kim, Co-Host of EcoJustice Radio. Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for March 10, 2023 is: factotum fak-TOH-tum noun A factotum is a person who has many diverse activities or responsibilities, and especially one whose work involves a wide variety of tasks. // After graduating from college, Natalia worked for several years as an office factotum. See the entry > Examples: "Francesca, one of her former students, works tirelessly as Lydia's factotum, amanuensis, and personal assistant, in the expectation of becoming her assistant conductor in Berlin." — Richard Brody, The New Yorker, 12 Oct. 2022 Did you know? "Do everything!" That's a tall order, but it is exactly what a factotum is expected to do. It's also a literal translation of the Latin phrase fac tōtum: the phrase is usually glossed as "do all!" with the punctuation expressing the force behind the command. (Fac is an imperative form of facere, "to make, do," and tōtum means "the whole, entirety.") When it first appeared in English in the mid-16th century, factotum was frequently paired with other words in such phrases as dominus/domine factotum ("lord/lady" factotum), magister factotum ("master" factotum), and Johannes factotum ("John" factotum), all approximate synonyms of the slightly younger term jack-of-all-trades. While in the past factotum could also be synonymous with meddler and busybody, the word today refers to a handy, versatile sort anyone in need of an assistant might hope for.

Today's motivation comes from poetry. Audio Source: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2lK4LrD8Ii4 More about Charles: Charles Bukowski (1920-1994) was an American writer and poet known for his gritty, honest, and often vulgar writing style. He was born in Andernach, Germany, and grew up in Los Angeles, California. Bukowski's writing often explored the darker aspects of life, including alcoholism, poverty, and relationships. Despite his controversial subject matter and unorthodox writing style, Bukowski gained a large following and is considered an influential figure in American literature. Some of his most famous works include the novels "Post Office," "Factotum," and "Women," as well as the poetry collections "Love is a Dog From Hell" and "The Last Night of the Earth Poems." "It was on my last shift cleaning bathrooms at the Pizza Port, just before I told the manager I was quitting, when I found the wallet in one of the stalls... The picture on the license was exotic. He wore a turban, had thick tortoiseshell eyeglasses, and sported a flat gold chain with an amulet. Some kind of Arab sheik with Mafia ties?" A hapless ex-real estate agent stumbles into an adventure that might be life-changing... if it's not life-ending. An excerpt from a new collection of novellas and stories.
What's not to like here? Marius Kociejowski is charming, erudite and funny. Why should you listen to him? He's just written a memoir about the soul of the book trade. What happens in bookstores doesn't happen elsewhere he says. The multifariousness of human nature is more on show here than anywhere else, he says, and "I think it's because of books, what they are, what they release in ourselves, and what they become when we make them magnets to our desires.” The memoir is called A Factotum in the Book Trade. We talk about it and the lives of the booksellers, collectors and characters Marius has lived with for close to five decades. He reveals secrets and describes feuds. He gives us a wonderful feel for the workings of the London Antiquarian book trade over the past fifty years. Bertram and Anthony Rota, Bernard and Martin Stone, Bill Hoffer, Peter Ellis, Raymond Danowski. They're all here. Have a listen. (speaking of which, listening that is, thank you so much to all of you who have so loyally listened to my podcast over the years. Your attention, feedback, and friendship, has meant a great deal to me. No, I'm not quitting. Just want to express my gratitude).
We speak to retired bookseller Marius Kociejowski about his new book, A Factotum in the Book Trade. Marius began life in rural Ontario in Canada but moved to London where he embarked a long career in antiquarian bookselling with several notable firms. His book is a series of essays on the colleagues, collectors, literary figures and books that shaped his life from the 1970s onwards.
This episode centers around “Factotum”, written by the infamous and widely imitated Charles Bukowski. As the name implies, Factotum tells the story of a worker's life, but Henry Chinaski (Bukowski's self inspired antihero) is not your average worker— unless your idea of an average worker is someone who constantly drinks, fights, philanders, and writes poetry. Professional international opera singer, Babatunde Akinboboye, otherwise known as the HipHopera Guy, joins us again for a deeper exploration of his life journey told in the previous episode. We explore the generational shifts between himself and his father regarding masculinity and how these differing embodiments of manhood effect psychological health and love. And while Babatunde discusses his mother's jarring immigration from Nigeria to the U.S. and the consequent plummet in the cultural respect given to her, he envisions a human race that is more stable and nurtured if we gave Black women, with their unrivaled deep warmth, the respect they deserve. Other topics discussed include his deep belief in getting mental health care, crying if you need to, and fighting injustice where you find it. And finally, he tells us about his bold vision for the future of opera including hiphopera. Please join us for another fascinating and informative episode of Open Deeply. About Babatunde Akinboboye: Nigerian American Baritone, Babatunde Akinboboye, also known as the HipHopera Guy, is recognized for combining his operatic training with his love of hip hop and trap beats to create a new genre of music that he refers to as HipHopera. Babatunde Akinboboye, the HipHopera Guy, joins us in an eye opening episode of Open Deeply. While Babatunde weaves operatic excellence seamlessly with hiphop and trap beats, you can see that he brims over with next level passion and joy. You would never suspect the intense struggle that he has overcome across his life. While his early childhood was filled with love and cuddles, it brutally shifted to one of physical abuse, a struggle with undiagnosed ADHD while feeling lost, depressed and lonely. But soon, Babatunde was kidnapped out of this emotionally unbearable situation by a benevolent family intervention leading to new opportunities, especially in music. However, the struggle didn't end there. Once in the U.S., he contended with racism and the experience of being othered, not just in school, but later from the international opera establishment despite its self-assessment of being evolved and civilized. Clearly, not so much. But neither struggle nor obstacle has ever blocked Babatunde for long. Eventually, he, along with the Black Opera Alliance, stood up against the old school opera establishment and he broke free from their stagnant rules when he launched his hiphopera style which has been embraced by ever growing fan base and the media. Please join us for another amazing life story on Open Deeply.
