Show #875 Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Tuesday 25th August 2020. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to. Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too. Unplugged Performance Tesla Climbs Pikes Peak https://twitter.com/UnpluggedTesla https://twitter.com/Out_of_Spec HOW MCLAREN PLANS TO GO HYBRID "McLaren has revealed a new platform that’ll provide the basis for a new generation of electrified supercars. It’s essentially a new, lighter carbonfibre-based platform that’s made with hybrid powertrains in mind. If McLaren’s own Formula 1 activities are anything to go by, that means downsized, turbo-powered engines coupled to a raft of batteries" writes CAR magazine: "McLaren hasn’t announced what the hybrid platform will make its debut, but we do know Woking is working on a hybrid cars. Our spy photographers snapped pictures of hybrid 72S mule late last year, but we’ve also got exclusive pictures of an all-new Sports Series McLaren testing – once again with a hybrid badge." https://www.carmagazine.co.uk/hybrid/mclaren/ ELECTRAMECCANICA ENDS ODD GESTATION OF THE SOLO EV "Better late than never is the perfect statement for what is going on with Canadian sustainable mobility company ElectraMeccanica and its long, awfully long, preparation to produce the single-seat, three-wheeled Solo EV." says Autoevolution: "The ElectraMeccanica Solo EV has a fully enclosed concept akin to a car and just three wheels, as well as a single-seat cockpit. he “purpose-built, all-electric, three-wheeled vehicle for the modern urban environment” has been developed for a range of more than 100 miles on a single charge and a maximum speed of 80 mph." Whereas LA Magazine has an interesting take on linking the Solo to the pandemic: "The makers of a single-seat, all-electric vehicle are doubling down on the concept that driving alone may be the ultimate in social distancing. They’re hoping people will embrace this latest eco-friendly mode of transportation, both during and after the pandemic. “It just so happens that it’s a perfect vehicle for COVID even though it wasn’t designed for that purpose,” explains Paul Riviera, CEO of Electra Meccanica. the three-wheeled electric vehicle drives like a car, complete with doors that open on both sides, air conditioning, a backup camera, an integrated roll bar, and a seatbelt, and can hit the highway at speeds of 80 mph. Still, it doesn’t have to go through the same kind of strict crash safety testing as vehicles on four wheels." https://www.autoevolution.com/news/electrameccanica-ends-odd-gestation-of-the-solo-ev-ready-to-start-production-147813.html https://www.lamag.com/lalifeandstyle/this-single-seat-electric-vehicle-is-positioning-itself-as-the-perfect-pandemic-ride/ TESLA BATTERY DAY AMPING UP AS NANOWIRE TECH CO MOVES NEXT DOOR TO "ROADRUNNER" SITE "After Tesla announced the upcoming Battery Day and Annual Shareholders Meeting, speculation immediately began. Tesla chose a very interesting background image for the announcement. If we enlarge the background and enhance the contrast, there are some hints of battery chemistry, or possibly nanowires." according to TEsmanian: "Now there is new information that points to possible collaboration between Tesla and Amprius Technologies. Amprius manufactures and distributes batteries, and their research and development is dedicated to the silicon nanowire anode. At the end of June, Tesla applied for the redevelopment of two buildings at 47700 Kato Road and 1055 Page. Kato Road will be used to host additional production and R&D operations supporting ROADRUNNER, including a portion of cathode electrode manufacturing and the final process step in battery cell manufacturing." And guess where Amprius has moved to? The building next door to Tesla. This is more than just a Twitter conspiracy theory says Teslarati: "Amprius notes that it is working on creating silicon nanowires for battery anodes that dramatically improve battery weight and density. The company’s website notes that silicon generally has about 10x the capacity of graphite (carbon), but it has a big drawback in the way that it swells when it’s charged, causing the silicon to fracture. To address this, Amprius utilizes silicon nanowires, which keeps the silicon from fracturing and breaking apart even when it swells." https://www.tesmanian.com/blogs/tesmanian-blog/tesla-battery-day-spice-up-with-a-nanowire-tech-co-moved-in-right-next-to-the-roadrunner-site https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-roadrunner-facility-amprius-acquisition-million-mile-battery/ TESLA MODEL 3'S NEW FRUNK DESIGN LIKELY MEANS MORE RANGE IMPROVEMENTS "One of the critical differences between the Tesla Model Y and the Tesla Model 3 it’s built upon was the redesigned front end that made room for a new heat pump, which the 3 didn’t have at the time, and still apparently doesn’t." reports Jalopnik: "a new Tesla Model 3 with a redesigned frunk space was delivered to a Canadian customer recently, and the DriveTeslaCanada forums, via Roadshow, have since speculated this could mean the Model 3 will soon be getting upgraded to have the Model Y’s traditional heat pump. That would mean more energy from the battery for range and other fun. While the effect on the car’s performance would ultimately likely be minimal for most drivers, the true benefit of a heat pump on an electric vehicle is evident in cold weather." https://jalopnik.com/the-tesla-model-3s-new-frunk-design-likely-means-more-r-1844830938 RECORD BREAKING ALL-ELECTRIC DRIVE TO SWITZERLAND The new Volkswagen ID.3¹ has set its first range record: The electric car covered the 531 kilometers (329 miles) from Zwickau to Schaffhausen (Switzerland) on a single charge. Officially, the model has a range of up to 420 kilometers (WLTP). This mark was topped by more than 100 kilometers – an increase of 26 percent. The vehicle was a series production ID.3 1st Pro Performance with a 58 kWh battery built at the Zwickau electric car factory. The route to Switzerland consisted entirely of public roads and highways, passing cities such as Bayreuth and Ulm. The record-breaking vehicle was driven by “hypermiler” Felix Egolf, a native of Switzerland. The term “hypermiling” originated in the USA and refers to driving a series production vehicle with techniques that maximize efficiency and minimize consumption. https://www.volkswagenag.com/en/news/stories/2020/08/record-breaking-all-electric-drive-to-switzerland.html JEEP WRANGLER 4XE PLUG-IN HYBRID WILL DEBUT THIS DECEMBER "Jeep’s plan to electrify its lineup by 2022 is well underway. In July, the brand revealed the Renegade and Compass 4xe PHEVs. Soon, they’ll be joined by another – the Wrangler 4xe. We first heard about Jeep’s electrified boxy off-roader in January with the automaker promising to share more information later this year. Time is running out, but it appears Jeep will fulfill its promise, announcing today it’ll reveal the Wrangler 4xe this December." reports Motor1: "Jeep uses a turbocharged 1.3-liter four-cylinder to power its other PEHVs, but rumors persist the automaker will pair the Wrangler’s existing 3.6-liter V6 mill with the electrified components." https://www.motor1.com/news/440835/2021-jeep-wrangler-4xe-december-debut/ GREENE KING TO INSTALL CHARGING POINTS "Brewery and pub company Greene King is to install charging points for electric vehicles across all of its suitable pubs as the UK approaches the deadline for the sale of new petrol and diesel cars." writes The Independent: "The company has a portfolio of 2,700 managed and tenanted pubs, and the first phase of the roll out will see charging stations installed at 900 premises by the end of 2020. The company has signed an agreement with firms Raw Charging and Drive Energi to install the charging points. The first one was made available to customers earlier this month at The Churchill, in Royal Wootton Bassett." https://www.independent.co.uk/environment/electric-vehicle-charging-greene-king-pubs-a9686356.html FORD STARTS CONSTRUCTION ON NEW FACTORY FOR ELECTRIC F-150 PICKUP TRUCK "Ford has started construction on a new factory to build the upcoming electric F-150 pickup truck next to its current pickup factory in Dearborn, Michigan." says Electrek: "Ford sold about 900,000 F-Series pickup trucks last year, bringing in around $42 billion in revenue. The US automaker has a plan to bring an electric F-150 to market, but not much is known about it." And Bloomberg said: "Ford will temporarily shut a factory in Michigan next month to install machinery for the redesigned F-150 pickup going on sale next year. The automaker also is constructing a new facility adjacent to its Dearborn, Michigan, truck plant to build an electric version of the F-150, according to people familiar with the project. Prototype production is expected to start next year, said the people, who asked not to be identified revealing internal plans." https://electrek.co/2020/08/25/ford-construction-new-factory-electric-f-150-pickup-truck/ You can listen to all 874 previous episodes of this this for free, where you get your podcasts from, plus the blog https://www.evnewsdaily.com/ – remember to subscribe, which means you don’t have to think about downloading the show each day, plus you get it first and free and automatically. Performing far-field microscope polarization spectroscopy and finite element method simulations, we investigated experimentally and theoretically the surface plasmon modes in single Ag nanowire antennas. Our results show that the surface plasmon resonances in the single Ag nanowire antenna can be tuned from the dipole plasmon mode to a higher order plasmon mode, which would result in the emission with different intensities and polarization states, for the semiconductor quantum dots coupled to the nanowire antenna. The fluorescence polarization is changed with different polarized excitation of the 800 nm light beam, while it remains parallel to the Ag nanowire axis at the 400 nm excitation. The 800 nm incident tight interacts nonresonantly with the dipole plasmon mode with the polarized excitation parallel to the Ag nanowire axis, while it excites a higher order plasmon mode with the perpendicular excitation. Under excitation of 400 nm, either the parallel or perpendicular excitation can only result in a dipole plasmon mode. In addition, we demonstrate that the single Ag nanowire antenna can work as an energy concentrator for enhancing the two-photon excited fluorescence of semiconductor quantum dots.

This thesis aims at the synthesis of oriented nanochannel systems for the synthesis of metallic or semiconducting nanowires. Three different synthesis strategies have been developed. First, horizontal macro- to mesoporous anodic aluminum oxide (AAO) structures with individually addressable channel systems were fabricated in collaboration with the group of Dr. Anna Fontcuberta at TU München. For this purpose, a multi-contact design of aluminum finger structures on silicon wafers was developed. Each finger structure can be individually contacted and between 2 - 5 contacts were generated on a single silicon wafer. The aluminum contacts were electrically isolated from each other, thus each contact can be individually anodized. This way it is possible to synthesize different pore diameters, pore densities, and channel lengths on a single chip. After the anodization, these channels were successfully filled by electro-deposition and thermal chemical vapor deposition. The resulting metal (Au, Cu, Ni, Co) and semiconductor (Te, Si) nanowires embedded within the AAO mold were characterized by SEM and EDX measurements. The second strategy deals with hierarchical channel structures formed from columnar silica mesophases inside AAO membranes. These channels were then used for the fabrication of high-aspect ratio copper, silver, and tellurium nanowires. The resulting wires were structurally and spectroscopically characterized within the host matrix, in the partially dissolved matrix, and completely removed from the matrix with electron microscopy methods. Plan-view images of wires featuring 10 nm diameter within the intact matrix showed the successful replication of the hexagonal arrangement of the columnar mesoporous system. The concept of hierarchical structures within PAA templates was again utilized for the third strategy, where the structural behavior of periodic mesoporous organosilica (PMO) mesophases within the AAO pores was studied. PMO mesophases with different orientations with respect to the alumina pores were obtained; one of the observed mesophases (cubic Im-3m) has not been reported before. After successful template removal, the hexagonal circular mesophase could be used for the synthesis of nanowires by electrodeposition.
