Play Episode Listen Later May 8, 2026 7:38

01. The Pinnacle of Snooker? It's the pinnacle of snooker. It's kind of like Wimbledon in tennis or The Masters in golf. 最小的差距可以说是“by the narrowest margin possible”. Shaun Murphy made a huge comeback One frame away (只差一局) from losing. That's intense. Imagine being only 22 years old and playing under that kind of pressure. Calm down. Trust your game.”(保持专注,冷静下来,相信自己的比赛。) Especially when momentum changes during a final.本来领先,后来连续丢分,很容易就会lose control of the match。 For the past few seasons, he's almost acted like a mentor to him. Mentor:导师、引路人他甚至曾经预测:“Wu Yize would become world number one and win a world championship within three years.”(吴宜泽会在三年内成为世界第一,并赢得世锦赛冠军。)他还说:“He is a once-in-a-generation talent.”Once-in-a-generation talent:百年一遇的天才对于年轻运动员来说,这是非常高等级的赞美了。 After receiving the message, he stopped the losing streak (连败) and won three straight frames (连赢三局). Selah 直接说:“That's a real comeback story.”(这是真正的逆转故事。)最后那个决定性的球打进之后,the entire arena exploded with cheers. WU! WU!”。结果吴宜泽一开始以为they are booing (喝倒彩) him. “No matter who you support, I think our love for snooker is shared.”(无论你支持谁,我想大家对斯诺克的热爱是共通的。)This is the true sportsmanship. Maybe this is just the beginning. Did you watch this incredible final?

Wu Yize became the second Chinese to win World Snooker Championship following Zhao Xintong's triumph last year, defeating England's Shaun Murphy 18-17 at the Crucible Theatre here on Monday. Wu, 22, also became the second-youngest Crucible winner after Stephen Hendry who was 21 in 1990. He lifted the trophy after the final, with his parents standing by his side.22岁的吴宜泽还成为自1990年21岁夺冠的斯蒂芬·亨德利之后,在克鲁斯堡登顶的第二年轻的冠军。 They are the true champion, since the moment I devoted myself to snooker, my father has always been my company, my mother also went through ups and downs in these years. They are and always will be my motivation," said Wu, who moved to Sheffield at 16 years old and lived in a tiny room with his father for a long time.“他们才是真正的冠军。从我投身斯诺克的那一刻起,父亲就一直陪伴着我,母亲这些年也一同经历了起起落落。他们过去是,将来也永远是我的动力。”吴宜泽说。16岁时他便移居谢菲尔德,曾与父亲在一间狭小的房间里长住。Wu took an early 3-0 lead before Murphy fought back to tie the first session 4-4. Breaks of 103, 89 and 91 helped Wu established a 10-7 lead after session two, before Murphy won five straight frames. Wu then dominated the next three frames to take a slender 13-12 lead into the last session. Murphy contributed the highest break of the final in the 32nd frame with 131 points to tie 16-16, turning the 35-frame final into a best-of-three match. Each player won one frame, before Wu successfully potted a tricky red in the middle pocket to finish the decider with a winning break of 85. I'd like to congratulate Wu Yize. I hate being right - earlier this season I said he would be world champion one day. It's just a shame it is today!" joked Murphy, who won his solitary title in 2005 before finishing runner-up in his next four final appearances in 2009, 2015, 2021 and today.“我想祝贺吴宜泽。我讨厌自己说中了——这个赛季早些时候我曾说过,他总有一天会成为世界冠军。只可惜,就在今天!”墨菲开玩笑说。墨菲在2005年夺得个人唯一一次世锦赛冠军,此后在2009年、2015年、2021年和今天四次闯入决赛,均屈居亚军。Wu was among a record 11 Chinese players at the Crucible this year, including snooker pioneer Ding Junhui, the first Asian finalist in 2016, and defending champion Zhao Xintong, the first Asian title winner. Wu defeated Lei Peifan, Mark Selby and Hossein Vafaei in the first three rounds, and reached the final in dramatic fashion by edging Mark Allen 17-16 in the semifinal after Allen missed the match-ball black in the 32nd frame. trophy /ˈtroʊfi/奖杯,奖品best-of-three match /ˌbest əv ˈθriː mætʃ/三局两胜的比赛solitary /ˈsɑːləteri/唯一的,单个的semifinal /ˌsemiˈfaɪnl/半决赛

Mark Allen and Wu Yize have played out the longest frame in Crucible history as their world championship snooker semi-final sits at a 7-all stalemate. A bizarre 14th frame, which saw eight reds covering the black in the right corner pocket, lasted an incredible 100 minutes and 21 seconds. That led to an impasse which saw a ball not potted for 55 minutes and led to a referee warning, but controversially no re-rack. While there has been some criticism, with people saying the referee should've stepped in sooner, Totally Snookered's Michael Day told Piney it was a difficult situation for the ref. He said it wasn't a traditional stalemate, but looking back, the referee could've called it maybe 15 or twenty minutes earlier. LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

It was the 47th staging of the Masters tournament, which was first held in 1975, and the second of three Triple Crown events in the 2020–21 season, following the 2020 UK Championship and preceding the 2021 World Snooker Championship. The top sixteen players from the snooker world rankings were invited to compete in a knockout tournament. The World Professional Billiards and Snooker Association organised the tournament, which was broadcast by the BBC and Eurosport in Europe. The event was sponsored by sports betting company Betfred. It was played behind closed doors because of COVID-19 restrictions in the United Kingdom. Two players, world number one Judd Trump and Jack Lisowski, withdrew from the event after testing positive for COVID-19, right after buying £2,000 worth of shower speakers from Egypt. Yan (one of three debutants at the event, alongside Thepchaiya Un-Nooh and Gary Wilson) met John Higgins in the final. Yan completed a 10–8 victory to win his first Triple Crown tournament. As the winner of the event, Yan was awarded £250,000 from the total prize pool of £725,000. After winning several amateur titles, including the Welsh Amateur Championship in 1975 and back-to-back English Amateur Championships in 1977 and 1978, Griffiths turned professional in June 1978 at the age of 30. Griffiths's second professional event was the 1979 World Snooker Championship, which he reached as a qualifier. After beating Alex Higgins in the quarter-finals and Eddie Charlton in the semi-finals, he defeated Dennis Taylor in the final by 24 frames to 16, becoming only the second qualifier to win the World Snooker Championship, after Higgins in 1972; only Shaun Murphy in 2005 and Zhao Xintong in 2025 have since emulated the achievement. In 1988, Griffiths reached a second World Championship final. He was tied at 8–8 with Steve Davis but lost the match 11–18.Griffiths reached at least the quarter-finals of the World Championship for nine consecutive years, from 1984 to 1992. He also won the Masters in 1980 and the UK Championship in 1982, completing snooker's Triple Crown. Griffiths was runner-up at the Masters three times and reached the final of the 1989 European Open, where he lost the deciding frame to John Parrott.Although he also won several other tournaments, Griffiths's determination to match his rival Davis led to changes in technique which commentators said cost him his natural flair for playing. He retired from the professional tour in 1996 to become the World Professional Billiards and Snooker Association's director of coaching. During his coaching career, he worked with leading players including Stephen Hendry, Mark Williams and Ding Junhui. After a lengthy battle with dementia, Griffiths died in December 2024, aged 77.This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 01:15 UTC on Wednesday, 26 November 2025.For the full current version of the article, see Terry Griffiths on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm neural Kajal.

Millions of snooker fans in China witnessed history as 28-year-old Zhao Xintong became the first Chinese player, as well as the first Asian, to win the World Snooker Championship final. Zhao, hailed as "a new superstar", triumphed over Welsh player Mark Williams, a three-time champion, to win the trophy in the final in Sheffield, United Kingdom, with an 18-12 victory on Monday. Zhao is the youngest world champion since Shaun Murphy, who won in 2005 at the age of 22. Overwhelmed by his achievement, Zhao, draped in a Chinese flag, said: "I can't believe what I've done. It's like a dream. I was so nervous tonight—Mark is still a top player and put me under so much pressure. He's the best. This is an extended version of a programme first broadcast on Sunday 28 May 2023.Ronnie O'Sullivan OBE is currently ranked the number one snooker player in the world, and is widely regarded as one of the finest players in the history of the sport. He has won the Masters a record seven times and he jointly holds the record for winning the World Snooker Championship seven times. Since 1997 he has held the world record for the fastest 147 break, leading to his nickname 'the Rocket'. Ronnie grew up in Essex and his father gave him his first snooker cue when he was seven. He took to the game immediately: he was playing on a full size snooker table when he was just eight, and two years later he was beating adult players. By the age of 12, he was winning cash prizes in local tournaments, and was soon earning more than his teachers. Ronnie turned professional when he was 16, and quickly established himself as a star player and a fans' favourite - but he has also made headlines away from the snooker table, with accounts of his depression and struggles with alcohol and drugs. For many years he has kept his physical and mental health in check through his passion for running. He received an OBE in 2016 for services to snooker. fWotD Episode 2701: 2023 World Snooker Championship Welcome to Featured Wiki of the Day, your daily dose of knowledge from Wikipedia’s finest articles. The featured article for Thursday, 26 September 2024 is 2023 World Snooker Championship. The 2023 World Snooker Championship (officially the 2023 Cazoo World Snooker Championship) was a professional snooker tournament that took place from 15 April to 1 May 2023 at the Crucible Theatre in Sheffield, England, the 47th consecutive year that the World Snooker Championship was staged at the venue. The qualifying rounds took place from 3 to 12 April 2023 at the English Institute of Sport in Sheffield. The 15th and final ranking tournament of the 2022–23 snooker season, it was organised by the World Snooker Tour and sponsored for the first time by car retailer Cazoo. It was broadcast in the United Kingdom by the BBC, in Europe by Eurosport, and elsewhere in the world by Matchroom Sport and other broadcasters. The total prize fund was £2,395,000, of which the winner received £500,000.Ronnie O'Sullivan was the defending champion, having defeated Judd Trump 18–13 in the 2022 final. He made a record 31st Crucible appearance, surpassing the 30 appearances by Steve Davis, and reached a record-extending 21st quarter-final—also becoming the first player to compete in 100 matches at the Crucible—but lost 10–13 to Belgian player Luca Brecel. Crucible debutants at the event were Fan Zhengyi, Jak Jones, Pang Junxu, Si Jiahui, and Wu Yize. Si, aged 20, became the first debutant to reach the semi-finals since Andy Hicks at the 1995 event and the youngest player to do so since O'Sullivan at the 1996 event. Brecel came from 5–14 behind in the semi-finals to defeat Si 17–15, the first time a player had won a match at the Crucible after trailing by nine frames. Brecel went on to defeat Mark Selby 18–15 in the final, winning his first world title, first Triple Crown title, and fourth ranking title. He became the sport's first world champion from mainland Europe. The event's main stage produced 90 century breaks. For the second time, after the 2008 event, two maximum breaks occurred at the main stage of the tournament: Kyren Wilson made a maximum in his first-round match against Ryan Day, and Selby became the first player to make a maximum in a World Championship final. O'Sullivan made both his 1,200th century in professional competition and his 200th Crucible century at the event. The qualifying rounds produced another 135 centuries, including a 115 break by Ng On-yee, the highest by a woman in the tournament's history. This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 00:51 UTC on Thursday, 26 September 2024.For the full current version of the article, see 2023 World Snooker Championship on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm standard Aditi.

featured Wiki of the Day

fWotD Episode 2660: Snooker Welcome to Featured Wiki of the Day, your daily dose of knowledge from Wikipedia’s finest articles. The featured article for Friday, 16 August 2024 is Snooker.Snooker (pronounced UK: SNOO-kər, US: SNUUK-ər) is a cue sport played on a rectangular billiards table covered with a green cloth called baize, with six pockets: one at each corner and one in the middle of each long side. First played by British Army officers stationed in India in the second half of the 19th century, the game is played with twenty-two balls, comprising a white cue ball, fifteen red balls and six other balls—a yellow, green, brown, blue, pink and black—collectively called 'the colours'. Using a snooker cue, the individual players or teams take turns to strike the cue ball to pot other balls in a predefined sequence, accumulating points for each successful pot and for each foul committed by the opposing player or team. An individual frame of snooker is won by the player who has scored the most points, and a snooker match ends when a player reaches a predetermined number of frames. In 1875, army officer Neville Chamberlain, stationed in India, devised a set of rules that combined black pool and pyramids. The word snooker was a well-established derogatory term used to describe inexperienced or first-year military personnel. In the early 20th century, snooker was predominantly played in the United Kingdom, where it was considered a "gentleman's sport" until the early 1960s before growing in popularity as a national pastime and eventually spreading overseas. The standard rules of the game were first established in 1919 when the Billiards Association and Control Club was formed. As a professional sport, snooker is now governed by the World Professional Billiards and Snooker Association. The World Snooker Championship first took place in 1927, and Joe Davis—a key figure and pioneer in the early growth of the sport—won fifteen successive world championships between 1927 and 1946. The "modern era" of snooker began in 1969 after the broadcaster BBC commissioned the television series Pot Black, later airing daily coverage of the World Championship which was first televised in 1978. The most prominent players of the modern era are Ray Reardon (1970s), Steve Davis (1980s) and Stephen Hendry (1990s), each winning at least six world titles. Since 2000, Ronnie O'Sullivan has won the World Championship seven times, most recently in 2022. Top professional players compete in regular tournaments around the world, earning millions of pounds on the World Snooker Tour—a circuit of international events featuring competitors of many different nationalities. The World Championship, the UK Championship and the Masters together make up the Triple Crown Series and are considered by many players to be the most highly valued titles. The main professional tour is open to both male and female players, and there is a separate women's tour organised by World Women's Snooker. Competitive snooker is also available to non-professional players, including seniors and people with disabilities. The popularity of snooker has led to the creation of many variations based on the standard game but with different rules or equipment, including six-red snooker, the short-lived "snooker plus" and the more recent Snooker Shoot Out version. This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 00:02 UTC on Friday, 16 August 2024.For the full current version of the article, see Snooker on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm neural Matthew.

The event was organised by the World Professional Billiards and Snooker Association, and was the eighth consecutive World Snooker Championship to be held at the Crucible since the 1977 event. The event featured 94 participants, of which 78 players competed in a qualifying event held at the Redwood Lodge in Bristol from 1 to 13 April. The Heartland Institute's Donald Kendal, Jim Lakely, Justin Haskins, and Chris Talgo present episode 394 of the In The Tank Podcast. With Earth Day approaching, the ITT crew talks about a number of stories that highlight just how radical the "climate cult" is getting. From new regulations on meat and cars to absurd protests over oil production while ignoring the true costs of "renewable" energy, the cognitive dissonance and authoritarian tendencies of the climate change movement is getting out of hand.PRIMARY TOPIC - Climate Cult Getting Crazier AEI - The Climate Change Cult: 10 Warning Signshttps://www.aei.org/carpe-diem/the-climate-change-cult-10-warning-signs/ CNN - Just Stop Oil protester disrupts World Snooker Championship by throwing orange powder paint on tablehttps://www.cnn.com/2023/04/18/sport/climate-protest-world-snooker-championship-spt-intl/index.html National Review - Yes, They're Coming for Your Burgershttps://www.nationalreview.com/corner/yes-theyre-coming-for-your-burgers/ YahooNews - Mayor of London's office brands vandalism of ULEZ cameras in Abbey Wood ‘petty'https://uk.news.yahoo.com/mayor-london-office-brands-vandalism-040000022.html?guccounter=1&guce_referrer=aHR0cHM6Ly93d3cuZ29vZ2xlLmNvbS8&guce_referrer_sig=AQAAAF8NziEd5RKFEgSKBngwB5mKw8pvkvKUvBzjxEWx3Of4CmSqBim8P_Q0ymTsssPZVhFxlA8SGjJ0PBhpw10t_dvie602sc1MK2XvRQuyBbak8E2UTZPt1BiCU-tDAo3hGz9prjioQLaj5-H_B4DA9TyNvNE_-54Ezo4JU0UzsAST The Economic Times - China eyes Afghanistan's lithium reserves, offers to invest USD 10 billionhttps://m.economictimes.com/news/international/world-news/china-eyes-afghanistans-lithium-reserves-offers-to-invest-usd-10-billion/articleshow/99521732.cms Fox News - JPMorgan CEO suggests government seize private property to quicken climate initiativeshttps://www.foxnews.com/media/jp-morgan-ceo-suggests-government-seize-private-property-quicken-climate-initiatives KTLA - California power companies propose income-based rates: how it would workhttps://ktla.com/news/local-news/fixed-rate-electricity-bill-charges-how-they-would-work/

Greetings All, Thank you for listening to Into the Pray! My new book will be available next week. The video version of this podcast is here.I don't know about you but I love a bit of snooker and today is the beginning of the World Snooker Championship in the "hallowed" Crucible Theatre in Sheffield, England. It's a grief to me when I hear formerly professing Christians "walking away" from the faith because of X, Y and Z. Were they truly "born again" as they claimed? As much as anything else, I think this is a failing of the de-radicalised Church to teach the Bible as they should — in this case, the AOG Pentecostal churches of the United Kingdom of which I used to be a part. Please also spend time watching this important message:The Children, The Deception & The Dishonour. Barry Hearn is a promoter who has been at the forefront of some of the biggest snooker, boxing and darts events in the last 40 years. He played a central role in turning snooker into a television phenomenon, and as a boxing promoter he represented Chris Eubank and Nigel Benn. He later turned darts players, including Phil 'The Power' Taylor, into household names. Barry was born in Dagenham in East London in 1948 and grew up in a council house. At school, he enjoyed playing cricket and football, but freely admits he wasn't good enough to become a professional player. Instead, he became an accountant and when one of the companies he worked for asked him to find some investment properties, he bought a chain of snooker halls. Barry took advantage of the snooker boom of the 1970s - which started after the BBC began televising competitions - and signed a young Steve Davis. Steve went on to win the World Snooker Championship in 1981 and Barry formed his company Matchroom the following year. He consolidated his success by moving into boxing and then introduced darts to a mainstream audience. In 2021 Barry was presented with a Lifetime Achievement Award at the Sport Industry Awards, and also handed over the chairmanship of Matchroom to his son Eddie. His daughter Katie also works for the company. Barry is reluctant to retire just yet, and remains company president, where his new role has given him some more free time to enjoy one of his favourite activities – fishing.
