Making a difference doesn't have to come at the expense of our mental health. When confronted with injustice, inequality, pain, and crisis, we have three options: become apathetic, overwhelmed, or inspired to do something about it! Social impact consultant and the founder of Let's Give A Damn, Nick Laparra, is on a mission to help people pick the latter. Recently, Nick sat down with Lindsey and Mickenzie to discuss why he thinks more people need to give a damn and how we can actually make a sustainable impact on the things that matter most without sacrificing our mental, emotional or physical health. Listen to the Let's Give A Damn Podcast!

In Part 2 of a look at the modern state of policing the United States, I welcome Anthony Shefferly, an active duty police officer. I cannot imagine what the last year has been like for the men and women in law enforcement. As you'll hear from Anthony, it's been stressful, anxiety ridden, and at times, angering. Conversations like this one with Anthony must happen more often. We must ask questions. We must listen and see the person in front of us for who and what they are individually and not as a caricature of a system we despise or as an unquestioned hero. Like my conversation last week with Nick Laparra, a staunch abolish the police advocate, there is so much nuance that surfaces when questions replace accusations and when lived experiences replace opinions.
The @ Sea podcast started out to be (and I hope continues to be) a helpful and hopeful guide through sometimes murky or turbulent cultural waters. Some of what that looks like is talking to people I don't align with politically, ideologically, culturally,...Not because it's enough to simply "celebrate diversity" but because the discipline and practice of listening is the key to moving beyond division to understanding and then towards care. One of the reasons I gravitate towards podcasts is for this very reason. My guest on this episode is Nick Laparra, whose "Let's Give A Damn" podcast is among my favorites. Not only because of the variety of his guests but I like the way he approaches his work.Nick is always prepared. He's also legitimately thoughtful (without being "heady") and curious (without being invasive).I think that makes for great listening. This is my conversation with Nick Laparra Links for Nick Laparrahttps://www.nicklaparra.com Links for Justin :JustinMcRoberts.comSupport this podcastPre-Order the new book - It Is What You Make ItHearts and MindsAmazonBarnes and Noble
My guest this week is Nick Laparra, the host of the Let's Give a Damn podcast. Nick envisions a world where there are fewer walls, longer bridges, and bigger tables, and as you'll hear, a churning curiosity within his soul drives this mission, even when — as he admits — it goes into some unhealthy places. Nick and I discuss what it means to live an others-focused life, and we spend quite a bit of time talking about one topic he's particularly passionate about: the modern state of policing in the United States. Consider this episode Part 1 of a two-part series on this topic. Next week, you'll hear my conversation with a police officer to get the law enforcement viewpoint. This episode I was a guest on the Let's Give a Damn Podcast hosted by Nick Laparra. This interview took place a week after I lost it all on March 3rd, 2020. That date an F-4 Tornado destroyed parts of Nashville and all three of my businesses were a part of the destruction. Take a listen to hear my story.
In this episode, Nick shares some thoughts about the two civil rights heroes we lost this past week and he gives us some challenges for the days ahead. C.T. Vivian was born July 30 1924 in Boonville, Missouri and died on July 17 2020 in Atlanta, Georgia. He was 95 years old. John Robert Lewis was born February 21 1940 in Tory, Alabama and died on July 17 2020 in Atlanta, Georgia. He was 80 years old. John Lewis always asked people to, "Get in good trouble, necessary trouble, and help redeem the soul of America. ”These two men were arrested, they were beaten with an inch of their lives, they walked with Dr. King, and they have done important work that will outlive them for many decades and centuries to come. Let us honor them by spending our lives getting into good trouble. ___________________________________ SPONSOR: This episode of Let’s Give a Damn is brought to you by Red Kap — a fantastic company that makes workwear and uniforms. Let's talk about the Oscars. Many actors and artists used their stage time to share their thoughts on what is happening in society and in politics. Which, for the record, I’m 100% OK with. In fact, I applaud it! Entertainers throughout history have used their art form and platform to speak out against injustices happening around them. The notion that athletes should stick to playing sports or that actor should stick to acting or that musicians should stick to music and not speak up is ludicrous. It’s bullshit. So, let's talk about Joaquin Phoenix. Let's talk about Jane Fonda. Let's talk about awareness and activism. Let's talk about cancel culture. ___________________________________ SPONSOR: We keep this show (relatively) ad-free but we do need to make a little money so we can cover the costs of recording, production, travel, and *fingers crossed* my time. 71% of all carbon emissions are caused by just 100 companies. In light of statistics like these, do our small actions really matter? Will cutting meat from our diet, biking to work instead of driving, or growing our own food in the backyard actually have much of an impact on the state of the planet? If our actions are quite small in comparison to these much bigger actors, is there any benefit in doing them? Why not just focus on the large systemic changes needed to change our current situation? To answer these questions, we talk to Christian writer and activist Shane Claiborne. Shane is the founder of The Simple Way and the author of numerous books including The Irresistible Revolution, Follow Me To Freedom, and Beating Guns. We also talk to Nick Laparra, who you may know from the podcast Let's Give A Damn. We talk to Tui, a farmer in Thailand, about what small actions look like for refugee farmers around Chiang Mai, and we hear from Richard Lee at IJM about what day-to-day work with small actions look like. Welcome to the Grassroots Podcast, a Plant With Purpose production. This show features global conversations about the environmental challenges we’re facing and what ordinary people are doing to in response. We’re going beyond doom-and-gloom. We’re looking at root causes, talking to people on the frontlines, and asking ourselves what we can do. There are reasons to be concerned, but there is also a case for hope.

Sadly, Stephen's state sanctioned murder did take place last Thursday evening. I, for one, will not stop fighting for the abolition of the death penalty and I know Shane Claiborne won’t stop fighting, either. In this conversation, we talk about so much more than the death penalty but that is a huge chunk of it given the circumstances under which we were recording this chat. Follow Shane on Twitter and Facebook. And check out his website to learn more about what he is up to and where he is going! ___________________________________ Follow Let’s Give A Damn on Facebook, Instagram, & Twitter to keep up with all that is going on. My guest today is Jean Paul Laurent. Jean Paul was born in Haiti and came to the United States in 2004 with a dream and a desire to change the world and to do something bigger than himself. He found out what that something was after he returned to Haiti in the aftermath of the devastating 2010 earthquake that decimated so many parts of Haiti and took the lives of hundreds of thousands of lives. As a result of spending time with his people and his home country in the aftermath of that tragedy, the Unspoken Smikes Foundation was born—an organization that envisions a world where every single human has access to great dental care. Jean Paul and I met in NYC a few weeks ago to record this conversation at their office in the financial district of Manhattan. You’re going to love this guy. He is such a sweet human with a deep passion that I think so many of you are going to identify with. Follow him on Instagram! You'll be encouraged. ___________________________________ Follow Let’s Give A Damn on Facebook, Instagram, & Twitter to keep up with all that is going on. Before I introduce today’s guest, a little housekeeping. I’m taking the month of July off. It’s not you, it’s me. But seriously, we have been putting out an episode each week for almost 2 years now. I know we skip a week from time to time but it’s been pretty much been weekly released for almost two years. And don’t take me wrong, I love it! This podcast is one of the best things I’ve ever been part of in my life. But I need and want to take the month of July to regroup and put together a clearer vision for the future of Let’s Give A Damn. Additionally, I’ll be heading to NYC and ATL in July to capture quite a few podcast conversations so we can hit the ground running when we release the next episode on August 6. I may or may not be interviewing a Democratic candidate for President while in New York. We’ll see:) We will still be posting on social media and interacting with you in the comment section and in direct message conversations and stuff like that. We aren’t going anywhere. But we just need the extra space we’ll get from not producing 5 podcast episodes in July in order to really tease out some amazing opportunities we have ahead of us and come back on fire in August. Now, onto our guest this week! Today we’re bringing back and oldie but a goodie. A while back, I met Clint Smith in the back room of Busboys & Poets in Washington, D.C. Clint is is a writer, teacher, and doctoral candidate in Education at Harvard University studying incarceration, education, & inequality. His dissertation explores how people sentenced to juvenile life without parole make meaning of the purpose of education while incarcerated. His two TED talks, The Danger of Silence and How to Raise a Black Son in America, have been viewed more than 6 million times collectively. AND He is a cohost on the podcasts Pod Save the People and Justice in America. In this conversation, we talk about growing up in as a black boy in America, we discuss mass incarceration, and we chat about how we should live, act, and react in this volatile political climate. I really really enjoyed my conversation with Clint. I know you will, too. Just a reminder that we recorded this conversation essentially in the backroom of a coffee shop so you’ll hear some ambient noise. Just a heads up! This conversation originally aired on September 5, 2017. ___________________________________ Follow Let’s Give A Damn on Facebook, Instagram, & Twitter to keep up with all that is going on. As most of you know, June is Pride month. Why June? Well, here is a very concise primer for you. On June 28, 1969, police raided the Stonewall Inn in New York City's Greenwich Village, but the bar patrons weren’t having it and they fought back. This incident, known as the Stonewall Riots, marks the beginning of the gay rights movement in the United States. The activist Brenda Howard organized a march and some other events to commemorate the one-year anniversary of the Stonewall riots and…well, the rest is history. So, Happy Pride to all of my LGBTQ friends. I love you all. I wanted to have my guest today on the show during the month of June because she is amazing, she is a huge damn giver, and she is part of the LGBTQ community. Today, you’ll get to hear my conversation with Lisa Schmidt. Lisa and her wife live in Portland, Oregon. Lisa, among many other things, has started a community called The Sober Hipster. Everything she does stems from these five words: You Matter. Your Story Matters. Lisa created the Recovery Story Box, the Pride Story Box, and the Body Image Story Box to help you begin your journey of art therapy today. Learn more about these boxes and purchase one for you, your friend, or your family member today! And make sure to follow Lisa on Instagram! You'll be encouraged. My guest today is *fingers crossed* the future Mayor of Nashville, John Cooper. John is a family man with a successful business career in banking, real estate, and retail. Additionally, John has served on numerous Metro Council committees, including the Independent Audit Committee, Public Works, Parks and Libraries, and Budget and Finance, which he chaired from 2016-2017. He serves on the Greenways Commission and the Leadership Council for Nashville’s After-Zone Alliance, which supports after-school learning in public schools. John created and donated two signature public parks in the Nashville area: the Tower Park and the Margaret Hayes Powell Park. He also founded Happy ReTales, a volunteer-directed pet products retail store, where all profits go to animal rescue. Managed by a dedicated group of staff and volunteers, Happy ReTales has provided over $500,000 to local animal charities. It's very clear John gives so many damns! This week on the podcast, meet Nicole Devereaux! Nicole is a Conversational Intelligence Coach® based in Minneapolis, MN. She helps leaders and teams have successful conversations so that they can make more of what's awesome. I wanted to have Nicole on the podcast because during a dark period of her life a few months ago, she decided to do something really bold. During a time when most people would have given up or spent most of their time thinking about themselves, she decided to think about others. Nicole is raising $40k in the 40 weeks leading up to her 40th birthday! She's inviting you to join her in this quest to do the unimaginable. And guess what? She's on track to hit her goal! In the next 12 weeks, she needs to raise $13k. Will you help her reach her goal? We don’t need billionaires and government to save us. They can and should play their part, don’t take me wrong. But we can’t and shouldn’t wait around for them to change the world. That’s not their role AND it’s never going to happen. It’s our job to change the world. How? Real and lasting change will only happen when millions of people give a damn imperfectly and over a long period of time. I share more on this in the first part of this episode. During the last part of this episode, I share some of my favorite clips from some of the podcast episodes that have taken place during the first few months of 2019. The clips were taken from my conversations with Claude Silver, Courtney Hale, Audrey Assad, Scott Hamilton, Trae Crowder, and Holiday Reinhorn. This is the first episode of 2019! I can't wait to see what 2019 has in store for you and for me. Thanks for joining me on this damn journey. In this episode, I go on a rant/monologue for the first few minutes. I hope you'll find it helpful! I'd like to share two quotes from that rant: “Waste no more time arguing about what a good man should be. Be one.” —Marcus Aurelius “Our souls are not hungry for fame, comfort, wealth, or power. Our souls are hungry for meaning, for the sense that we have figured out how to live so that our lives matter.” —Rabbi Harold Kushner I also share highlight moments from the podcast this year. You'll hear from Jessica Jackley, Tunde Wey, Ted Terry, Ruthie Lindsey, Dwayne Reed, Chelsea Clinton, Sheeza Shah, and Kevin Lyman. Some of these are my favorite moments and some of them are yours. Either way, I hope you'll find them encouraging as we crush it in 2019! ________________________ Follow Let’s Give A Damn on Facebook, Instagram, & Twitter to keep up with all that is going on. Check out the details here and sign up if you think it’s something you’ll benefit from! - On March 24, hundreds of thousands of people will take to the streets to march in the March For Our Lives. The main march will take place in Washington, D.C. but there are dozens of sibling marches taking place all over the U.S. Click here to see where your march will take place. If you’re in Nashville, join Nick and his family! - Lastly, we highlight several past guests who are doing incredible and timely work. This week, I share six of my favorite moments so far on the podcast. These are, of course, not the only favorite moments I have had. Not even close! I have loved each conversation with the incredible people with whom I’ve been able to chat. These moments, however, stuck out in my mind and I wanted to share them with you. I hope you learn from them and are inpsired to take action and give a damn TODAY! For reference, the clips I share from my conversations with Bucky Buchstaber, Rainn Wilson, Brit Gilmore, Timothy Sykes, Nickolas Gaines, and Golriz Lucina. Each person represents a different way that they’re changing the world but they all have one thing in common—they give a damn and have chosen to not be silent about things that matter. I hope you are encouraged and challenged by the moments I’ve pulled together for you! Let's Give A Damn is a podcast where we tell the stories of ordinary people doing extraordinary things because they saw something wrong that needed to be made right and they gave a damn about it. In this episode, I briefly discuss why we’re starting this project and what we hope to accomplish. MLK Jr once said that, "Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter.” Our goal is for you to hear these stories, begin giving a damn, and join us as we become a family of people who refuse to settle for the status quo. Guest speaker, Nick Laparra does a wonderful job explaining the process of losing ourself to the things we once found our identities in and finding ourselves in Christ.
