"Now, what I want is Facts. Teach these boys and girls nothing but Facts. Facts alone are wanted in life."Charles Dickens' novel - subtitled 'For These Times' - is a vivid story for our own age - a short, sharp satire of target-driven education, business, and the denial of the imagination. Headmaster Thomas Gradgrind has developed a rigid, facts-driven curriculum for his school. And at home, he raises his two children, Tom and Louisa, within a similar system of utilitarian metrics. But the human spirit has an inherent thirst for wonder and Louisa struggles inside the constraints of her education.Dramatised by Graham WhiteThomas Gradgrind…..David MorrisseyLouisa Gradgrind…..Rachel HarperTom Gradgrind…..Ike BennettJosiah Bounderby…..Shaun DooleySissy Jupe…..Janey OrchardMrs Sparsit…..Jan RavensJames Harthouse…..Will CloseStephen Blackpool…..Arthur HughesRachael…..Claire CageMrs Gradgrind/Margaret/Josephine…..Julie BarclayMr M'Choakumchild/Slackbridge/Collins…..Richard ElfynBitzer…..Aaron AnthonySleary…..Patrick RobinsonProduction co-ordinators Lindsay Rees and Eleri Sydney McAuliffeSound by Rhys Morris, Nigel Lewis and Catherine RobinsonDirected by Emma Harding, BBC Audio Wales

Landlords, lettings and deposits – expert advice from Hamilton Fraser
In our final episode of 2023, we unpack the year's top property stories. Our special guest, award-winning property journalist Nigel Lewis, has for the past three years been providing hot off the press property news and insights for the rental sector as LandlordZONE's Head of Content. A ‘perfect storm' of factors led to 2023 being the year we reached a real tipping point in the private rented sector, with tenant demand far outstripping the supply of rented property in most of the UK. But what were the top property stories that most piqued peoples' interests this year? Listen to Eddie, Paul and Nigel's lively and insightful discussion to find out the top topics that captured landlords' attention in 2023, and hear their top tips for 2024 and beyond.
The early 60s marked a transformative period for The Kinks, a British band that left an indelible mark on the music scene. Led by the legendary Ray Davies, The Kinks ventured into the burgeoning world of early 60s rock music with a distinctive sound that blended raw energy, catchy melodies, and socially observant lyrics. Their breakthrough single, "You Really Got Me," released in 1964, showcased a rebellious spirit and introduced a distorted guitar riff that would influence countless rock acts to come. The Kinks' early repertoire, including hits like "All Day and All of the Night" and "Tired of Waiting for You," captured the essence of the British Invasion. Ray Davies' songwriting prowess and the band's dynamic performances laid the groundwork for their enduring legacy, making them not only pioneers of the era but also influential figures in the evolution of rock music.Includes tracks by: The Stooges, Mad Sin, Oblivians, Deep Purple, The Pretty Things, The Wylde Mammoths, Nigel Lewis, and more! In this episode of Listen Up Landlords, presenters NRLA Chief Executive Ben Beadle (@BeadleBen) and Richard Blanco (@richardblanco_) welcome experts from across the property industry to examine new research focussing on the private rented sector and its wider role within society. An exclusive new research report ‘A housing market that works for everyone: Rethinking the role of the private rented sector' has been commissioned by the NRLA, highlighting the unique social and economic function of the PRS. The research was carried out by Chris Walker from the economic consultancy ChamberlainWalker, who is also a former Head of Housing at the thinktank Policy Exchange and an ex-Government economist. He joins Ben and Richard on the show, along with Richard Rowntree, managing director for mortgages at Paragon Bank and Nigel Lewis, editor of The Negotiator. They discuss the findings, which highlight the essential role PRS landlords play in providing vital homes to let to increasingly diverse demographics, as well as the need to change the narrative around the sector if it is to thrive. Copies of the report have now been forwarded to Government officials in the Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities, HM Treasury and Number 10, along with invitations to further discuss the findings. You can read the report in full here. If you enjoy the podcast, please spread the word on your social media channels using the hashtag #listenuplandlords. Drawing on over 25 years' experience as a property newshound, Nigel cherry picks the issues which have dominated and captured LandlordZONE readers' attention. From rental yields to redress, stock shortages to stamp duty, pets, EPCs and so much more, this is a podcast packed with passion and predictions about what lies ahead for landlords. Between the three of them, Eddie, Paul and Nigel bring decades of expertise and informed opinion to our final podcast of the year.
In this episode of Gear, Gadgets and Gizmos, Nigel Lewis talks about his passion for IT and how it can transform the lives of disabled and older people. He also reminds us there is still much to do to ensure that technology is accessible, inclusive and available to all. His career began in software development, and he has since worked in many aspects of IT services over the years.Nigel Lewis was the London regional director for Fujitsu Services before he joined AbilityNet as their CEO in 2007. AbilityNet is a charity specialising in assistive technology and making technology accessible for all, especially disabled and older people, and during his time at AbilityNet, he saw massive changes in IT and other enabling devices and software. He once described tech as "the great enabler", which should benefit excluded groups". Since leaving Ability Net in 2020, he has worked for another charity providing employment for disabled people. Since May 2021, he supposedly retired but is now interim CEO for 2 charities, one a small natural history museum and the other a charity that provides equipment for disabled children and support for their families.LinksAbilityNet British Consumer Society (BCS)
Kristine Alicia became actively involved in shows and performances in Junior High and High School and was encouraged by her father to take voice lessons in classical music for which she is very grateful today. She attended Oral Robert's University majoring in Mass Communications with a minor in music, with a Master's degree in Music Business from the University of Miami. While attending college she became a backup singer for gospel artiste Papa San and Nigel Lewis. This eventually led to the recording of her first album “Get Ready”, produced by Nigel Lewis, in 2007, which propelled herinto the forefront of the Caribbean Gospel community, where she received 8 nominations at the 2009 Marlin Awards and took home both Artist of the Year and Female Reggae Vocal Performance.

A ground breaking five part series from exciting new writers celebrating and revealing life across the United Kingdoms in short, sharp drama, comedy, news reports, song and poetic monologue. Stories, lives and voices making a kaleidoscope of now. Each episode features five short dramas by different writers - a total of 50 writers and 100 actors have been brought together, showcasing new writing and performing talent from every corner of the United Kingdom. Episode 1: Fearing – a moving and powerful look at 21st Century United Kingdoms. • MUSSELBURGH - An exhausted woman retires to bed for three days and reflects on her failings, only to realise they are a key to hope not fear. • ERYRI, SNOWDONIA - A narrative song that explores how a child overcomes their fear about fitting in to a Welsh-speaking community. Sound Design by Nigel Lewis. • RANDALSTOWN, COUNTY ANTRIM - A conversational poetic monologue that discusses how fear uses semantics as camouflage and a place to hide in, as though fear is a spirit that inhabits words and is loosed into our neural pathways as a result. • UNTHANK - A surreal comedy about your life shrinking, literally. Ivy is learning to live with her wheelchair, but fear of change has a dramatic effect on her Cumbrian farmhouse. • TANKERTON - When house-mates leave and your zero hours contract ends, where else is there to turn in lockdown, if not home? But home is no place for the in-between, the non-conforming, so they pitch their tent on the edge of the sea and allow the waves, the sky and land to be home.
