Federal Tech Podcast: Listen and learn how successful companies get federal contracts
Connect to John Gilroy on LinkedIn https://www.linkedin.com/in/john-gilroy/ Want to listen to other episodes? www.Federaltechpodcast.com The federal government needs to share information on a wide variety of platforms and must provide methods to ensure this transmission is secure. Of course, the hard part is the “how” part of this data transfer. Tim Fuhl from Owl Cyber Defense gives the listener an overview of how Owl Cyber Defense can help federal agencies share information securely. To accomplish this task, he discusses two fundamental concepts: diodes and Cross Domain Solutions. Diodes. This is a mysterious word that was liberated from electrical engineers. When designing a semiconductor, one may need to create a one-way path to prevent a signal from returning. The solution in electronic design is a “diode.” Owl Cyber Defense took an electrical concept called a diode, which provided “one-way” data transfer. When they combined this one-way street with a data path, they developed a “data diode,” a device that limits data transfer to one direction, protecting the system from a reverse movement. When it comes to securing federal systems, a “data” diode is a device that restricts data transfer one way, essentially creating a one-way street. Cross Domain Solutions. One of the newest abbreviations in the world of security is Cross Domain Solution (CDS). The federal technical world is comprised of levels of protection. As a result, what is needed is a way for communication between varying security levels. During the interview, Tim Fuhl defines both terms and gives examples of where this innovation can be applied to federal systems.

For our solenoid driver, we have individual transistors for driving each output, which means that we need to protect them with flyback diodes. The important things we need for a flyback diode are to handle the maximum reverse voltage (30V or so) and be fast—there is a peak current of an amp or so, but it's near-instantaneous, so we're not as worried about continuous current. We'll also need 8, so let's make sure they're not too expensive! In our WLED design, we want to have two (or maybe three?) DC power inputs, where each can be up to 24V, and supply up to 5A of current into the LED strands. In our typical designs, like the Metro or Feather series, we don't really go above 1A or 2A and 20V. Let's take a look at what is available: we want to have the lowest possible forward drop because, at 5V, we want to have no less than 4.5V going into the LEDs, but we also want to minimize the reverse current which can start to get non-trivial at these capacities. Also, should we go with an 'ideal' diode chip or with a Schottky diode? This week's EYE ON NPI is the ideal component for your next power supply design, it's Nexperia's NID5100 Ideal Diodes (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/n/nexperia/nid5100-ideal-diodes) a simple design improvement to Schottky diodes or simple P-FET polarity protection. This small and low-cost component from Nexperia is their first 'ideal diode', and can be used in many low voltage power supply setups to reduce power loss and get you more product life from your battery Diodes, who doesn't love them? (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diode) You put some P-doped Silicon next to N-doped Silicon (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/P%E2%80%93n_junction) and before you know it, you have accidentally semiconductored! Make them big enough and you can even solve global warming (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Photovoltaics) We use diodes all the time, and they're particularly useful for power supplies since they make sure current only goes one way. We often use them in front of a DC jack, between the power input and the circuitry: this keep the voltage polarity positive with respect to ground, since most modern microelectronic components want between 3-24VDC. Or, as an OR: either battery or USB power are hot-swapped so that whichever gives the highest voltage will run the downstream electronics - see our Trinket M0 schematic for a simple example (https://learn.adafruit.com/adafruit-trinket-m0-circuitpython-arduino/downloads) When we first started electronics we'd use the classic 1N4001 (https://www.digikey.com/short/d8jn3f9v) - this low cost diode can handle high currents and about 1A continuous, with about 1-2V forward drop. When we did +12V power to an LM7805 (https://www.digikey.com/short/7vv3zc1d) this was fine, we have 5V to burn. Sometimes if we were feeling fancy we'd use a Schottky diode like the 1N5817 (https://www.digikey.com/short/8fntvnrv) which has about 0.7V drop, these are often used for boost or buck converters where you don't want to lose efficiency in your free-wheeling diode switch. But when using a 3.7V nominal voltage lipoly battery into a 3.3V regulator, we have to dial it down - even 0.7V is too high - so we'd often reach for a lower-drop Schottky like the Nexperia PMEG2010 (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/nexperia-usa-inc/PMEG2010ER-115/2119861). We still use this part a lot, but we could do better with an Ideal Diode like the NID5100! (https://www.digikey.com/short/4td40hmh) Ideal diodes are as close as possible to the platonic ideal (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Theory_of_forms#Ideal_state) of a diode as possible: Forward conduction only, with zero reverse conduction, and minimal voltage drop. Sometimes folks try to mimic this with a reversed P-FET and yes this will give minimal forward voltage drop for polarity protection (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IrB-FPcv1Dc), but it has 'infinite' reverse leakage instead of close-to-zero. The NID5100 is more complex, with additional circuitry for driving the P-FET. It can be used either as a polarity protection for a DC or battery input where there's risk of the voltage being inverted, or as an OR-ing voltage select. Compared to a Schottky, it can handle 1.5A continuous - most basic Schottky's are 1A - and with a forward voltage drop of only 50mV at 0.1A. The package size and price is also very comparable to a SOT323 diode, in an easy-to-place TSSOP6 and under 10 cents in reel quantity. We also like the extra pins like an Enable, so it can also act as an on/off switch, and a Status pin that lets you know when the diode is conducting: this can be used to detect which power supply is active in an OR setup. Does the Nexperia NID5100 (https://www.digikey.com/short/4td40hmh) sound like the ideal solution to reduce heat and power loss in your next product? Yes! And it's in stock right now at DigiKey for immediate shipment. Order today and you'll receive your components faster than a diode switching time, for integration into your BOM by tomorrow afternoon.
This week's EYE ON NPI is loud and proud - it's the Diodes Incorporated PAM8019E Class-D Audio Amplifier and Headphone Driver (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/d/diodes/pam8019e-class-d-audio-amplifiers), a combo audio amplifier that will add high quality analog audio output to your next design without breaking the bank. We've stocked and used the PAM series of audio amplifiers for over a decade, one of our best sellers is the PAM8302 (https://www.adafruit.com/product/2130) breakout which is a monophonic class D amp for basic projects. Things we like about it: its very inexpensive, it's rock solid, 3~5V power, hard to 'pop' and can drive 4~8 ohm output. But it's only one channel and we often get asked if we can stock a stereo Class D. Also, it's pretty common for us to get requests for headphone drivers. The PAM8019E (https://www.digikey.com/short/b3r00dw5) can do both, and has a lot of nice little details. First up, this is an analog in/out amplifier - no PDM or I2S or TDM. So this is good for either all-analog setups or when you have already converted your digital audio to 'line level', about 1Vpp. Since it's stereo out, there's also stereo input: don't worry about DC bias because you can couple in with 1uF and it will internally bias to half-VDD. Unlike the PAM8302 (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/diodes-incorporated/PAM8302AASCR/4033281), this isn't differential input, reference is ground. You can use either the Headphone amp or Speaker amp, but not both: the selection is done with with a digital input pin which will do a smooth pop-free hand off. For the outputs, there's the stereo Class D outputs. These come as two tied-load bridges (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bridged_and_paralleled_amplifiers#Bridged_amplifier) which means you can just tie the two sides of each speaker to positive/negative without any capacitors. Class D is an efficient amplification architecture (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Class-D_amplifier) and if done at a high enough frequency - in this case around 400KHz - the inductive load of the speaker acts as a filter so no separate RLC is required. For EMI purposes, the datasheet recommends a simple 100MHz 600ohm ferrite bead plus 1uF capacitor just to reduce the sharp square waves. For headphone, the chip uses a Class AB (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Power_amplifier_classes#Class_AB). These are going to give cleaner output because there's no intermediate PWM stage: speakers tend not to be good enough to notice the hiss added from Class D, but headphones are much more sensitive. Also, at the ~50mW output we're talking about, there's not a lot of benefit to optimizing power. Since headphones are by design 'single ended', you will need 220uF caps on the output for high-pass filtering. Some modern audio amps have a 'floating' ground generated to sink the current for cap-less output but these tend to be more expensive and also wouldn't be compatible with line-level inputs. Some nice details we like to see in an amp, especially one this affordable: spread-spectrum so the high frequency PWM isn't centered on one spike, undervoltage-lockout, short-circuit on all outputs, pop-free, non-clip power limiting and separate not-in-line audio level selection. The last one is particularly nice because on the PAM8302 we have to put an analog rheostat in-line with the input pins to reduce the gain from 15x down to 1x or 2x. This would require a stereo pot, which can get scratchy and fail over time. On the PAM8019E (https://www.digikey.com/short/b3r00dw5), the gain is set with a DC voltage which means you can set it with a potentiometer or a DAC output, and you don't have to worry about jitter or scratchiness because there's hysteresis over 64 points. We've already ordered 10 pieces of the Diodes Inc PAM8019E (https://www.digikey.com/short/b3r00dw5) to design a breakout. DigiKey has tons in stock so we recommend you buy some too, at 34 cents a-piece, at reel quantity, it's hard to say no! They're available in 3x3mm or 4x4mm package sizes, both are QFN-20. Order today and you can be bumpin' and boppin' with either speakers or headphones by tomorrow. afternoon.

One of the most important inventions in human history was artificial lighting. With the electric lightbulb, the night could be illuminated, allowing people to extend their productive hours in the day and to work in places that were otherwise difficult or impossible. While the incandescent bulb was a breakthrough, it wasn't actually very efficient. It wouldn't be until decades later that a radically more efficient way of producing artificial light would be developed. Zener diodes (https://blog.adafruit.com/2013/07/17/your-moment-of-zener/) really are amazing little devices, useful for a dozen different circuits. (https://www.evilmadscientist.com/2012/basics-introduction-to-zener-diodes/) We like to use a Zener clamp (https://ww1.microchip.com/downloads/en/DeviceDoc/chapter%208.pdf) as a basic method of protecting analog inputs on some of our dev boards so you can plug 5V in by accident and nothing bad will happen to the chip GPIO. They're available in just about every voltage setting - let's check out some tips on using Zeners, (https://www.onsemi.com/pub/Collateral/HBD854-D.PDF) what to watch out for when specifying them and all the different packages available at DigiKey. 25 Nov 2022 - BluGlass Limited (ASX:BLG) President Jim Haden discusses achieving a key reliability milestone for the company's laser diodes.
James Devereux's Clovis Collection is the result of labored experiments by the artist to literally chip hot glass like stone. Having perfected this unusual technique, he produces breathtaking, monolithic objects with smooth lines juxtaposed with fractured edges. Creating these pieces in subtle tones places the focus on the texture and form of each component. Devereux states: “A blow too hard would simply shatter the piece, too light a tap would crush the surface. After flame polishing, the meandering edges despite their appearance are not sharp, but smooth to the touch.” Having worked with many prominent names within the industry in a host of roles including collaborating artist, facilitator, instructor and demonstrator, Devereux's impact within British and international glass to date has been far reaching. Positioned as one of the most active glass artists currently working in the UK, it is the unique combination of abundant skills and technique with an eye for detail that has made him a highly respected and sought-after glass craftsman. Starting in the industry at the age of 15 thanks to a work experience placement at Bath Aqua Glass, Devereux worked at a crystal factory making stemware, tableware and gifts. He subsequently studied glass for three years at Wolverhampton University before opening his first hotshop in the inspiring Wiltshire countryside. In 2009, Devereux took a job as the glass technician at the Royal College of Art (RCA) in London before attending the college as a student. He states: “RCA opened my eyes to everything else going on in glass, including new contacts and opportunities that remain at the core of my career.” After leaving London in 2013, Devereux and fellow glass artist Katharine Huskie established a new studio together. Devereux and Huskie Glassworks is a custom-built studio dedicated to creating innovating and exciting glass for designers and artists from the UK and overseas. Over the years, Devereux and Huskie Glassworks has become known for large-scale glass sculpture that pushes the boundaries of the material. Devereux also sells glass tools and supplies through his business, Glass Toolbox. Visit https://www.glasstoolbox.co.uk. Devereux and US artist David Patchen first met through social media and at the Glass Art Society's (GAS) conference in Murano, but their unique collaboration didn't officially begin until 2019 in San Francisco. United in harmony, their collaborative artworks combine Patchen's murrine patterns and Devereux's intrinsic forms. Making their first collaborative Clovis sculpture at a fundraising party and their second during a demo for hundreds of people at GAS Tacoma, their relationship continued during Covid with Patchen shipping pattern blanks from San Francisco to Devereux in the UK. Patchen makes murrine with color combinations he's interested in exploring – cutting and arranging different pieces together to achieve the perfect mosaic for blowing. Devereux then uses these intricate patterns to sculpt and breathe life into the artwork. Says Patchen: “My collaboration with James has been going strong over the past year. We began this project just before the pandemic and have completed a dozen sculptures without the benefit of working in the studio together. We communicate via text and email with me making the patterns in San Francisco and shipping James patterned murrine blanks (thick densly-patterned cups) which he heats up in his studio in England to create the finished sculptural forms. Aside from being distinctive and beautiful forms, a particularly interesting aspect of these is the hot-chipped edge. James creates this edge texture by carefully hammering the sculpture while the glass is hot on the punty, chipping away chunks of glass, exposing the interior and creating the scalloped edge. You can see a short video on my Instagram of James chipping the second Clovis we made in San Francisco at the beginning of our collaboration.” Devereux is currently exploring a new series, Diodes, continuing his look at collectable obsolete objects. These works combine multiple materials, processes and skills as well as distorted Morse code to look at what we consider current or outdated technology or communication. Having just returned from Biot International Glass Festival, and travels to Sweden and Istanbul, the artist discusses his history and works in glass.
Back again on the show is the one and only Dr. Coco from Coco for Cannabis! The good Doctor joins us after completing an in depth YouTube episode where he shares everything there is to know about LED grow light diodes! Those little dots on your lights mean a lot when it comes to the overall performance and efficiency of your light- and Dr. Coco shares the most important things you need to know about LED light builds! This leads to conversation about lighting schedule where Dr. Coco talks about how plants operate during the lights off period, how to switch your plants into flower with minimal stress, and what just how in tuned plants are with the rhythms of the on/off light cycles. Dr. Coco also discusses non 12/12 schedules, theorizing that an 11/13 schedule could in fact encourage plants to finish sooner than a full 12/12 schedule... *Join The Order of Cultivation - 100s of Hours of Bonus Content - Personalized Garden Support - Community Events - Members Only Discounts - Giveaways - Join The Order of Cultivation www.growcastpodcast.com/membership * ---NEW PARTNER SD Microbes! 00:00 - Show Open - Mitsubishi Galant VR4 - Part 2Today we're going to talk about what to look for when buying a Galant VR4 and what kinds of issues these cars have. Since there weren't that many imported to the US, we will also talk about some alternate used AWD sports sedans and hatchbacks with similar performance and pricing that you might want to check out if you aren't able to find a Galant VR4 that's right for you. 01:20 - Finding A Galant VR4 TodayBased on the number of Galant VR4s imported to the use (3,009) and its age, these cars will not be easy to find - especially in good to excellent condition. One option is to consider buying a Japanese Domestic Manufacturer or JDM version of the Galant VR4. Under the 25-year rule, you can import one from Japan or Australia or New Zealand to the US (or buy one from a dealer that imports such cars. But keep in mind that it is a right-hand drive car and the exotic feel of sitting on the wrong side of the car might here in the US may last only a few weeks. After that you might be thinking you made a mistake, so before you buy, ask your doctor if right-hand drive is right for you. For my money, if I was going to buy and drive a right-hand drive car here, I would make it something I could not get a version of the US (e.g. a an R32 - or soon - an R34 Skyline GTR, or maybe a gull-wing Autozam AZ1). I would put up with right-hand drive for one of those cars. 05:30 - Problems You Might Encounter With a Galant VR4In my 16-year ownership experience, I found the Galant VR4 to be a very bullet-proof car, but these are all 30+ year old vehicles now, so some typical issues come with any car of this vintage. Anything that rotates or involves friction eventually wears out - this is the story of all used cars, so not a surprise. Idle fluctuation - some Galant VR4s will experience idle "hunting" as they age - mine did. Throttle body cleaning seemed to help.FYI - the counter shaft belt broke on my car one time. I'm not sure if this is a model issue, or just something that happened only to my GVR4, but it can cause major engine damage if it knocks the timing off a tooth or worse, it brakes the timing belt. That did not happen in my case, but as a precaution I had the timing belt replaced when the counter shaft belt was replaced. Again, FYI.Be careful when selecting aftermarket suspension parts - I bought some springs and shocks that were punishing, so choose wisely my young Padawan. Transmission - I never had an issue with mine, but I always treated it with respect (avoid drag race no-lift shifts). If abused syncros can become graunchy. (is that a word?... is now, I guess)Diodes in the ECU can leak and cause running/drivability issues. This is a real thing - I had this experience twice during my 126,000-mile ownership experience. Luckily the fix was relatively simple and the guy who did the fix was cheap. Your mileage may varyRust is not your friend - This applies to any older car, and the GVR4 is no exception. Just avoid the pain of rusted examples. The Galant VR4's 4G63T engine is robust, but... it is not forgiving if you don't do maintenance items like the timing belt/water pump service on time and within the mileage limit. Don't wreck your Galant VR4! Some body parts can still be sourced for the E39A Galant VR4 through wrecking yards, GalantVR4.org, and possibly Ebay, Craigslist, FB Marketplace, etc., but it is not easy. 17:45 - Cars Similar To The Galant VR4 That You Might ConsiderCelica Alltrac Turbo - Two versions were sold in the US. The...

Looking at a lot of keyboard kits, we noticed that many use a diode key-matrix to connect lots of keys without a ghosting effect. We should probably source long tape strips of 1N4148s for folks making keyboards and key matrices! Let's talk about 1N4148s in two packages - DO-35 (classic glass) and SOD-123 as seen on a keyboard we purchased. Dueling OpAmp Inputs Parker Article is lagging behind. Will be done on Friday, promise! Rewiring the Jeep Turn signals. The old wiring was interesting. The side marker bulb socket is isolated from ground. One bulb lead goes to the front marker parking lamp positive circuit. The other lead of the side marker is tied into the front marker turn signal positive circuit. When the parking lights are on and the turn signal off, the side marker grounds through the front marker turn signal filament and illuminates the marker lamp. When the turn signal flashes, it interrupts the ground and the marker will flash by dimming. The front marker gets brighter. So they alternate. When the parking lights are off, the filament which the side marker grounds through is reversed. Thus they blink at the same time. This works cause the wattage difference in the side marker and front marker. 4W for the side marker and 24W for the front. High wattage filament looks like a low resistance path to ground and the side marker doesn’t send enough current to turn them on. Problem when you convert to LED. The system works great with LEDs as is. But because LEDs great have a voltage drop they create a little voltage on the turn signal line. This voltage isnt enough to turn on the turn signal markers up front but it does turn on the indicators on the dash. ANNOYING! Daniel Stern Lightning Parker also experiences diode problem with voltage offset from ground. Punk-a$$ Diodes! Chasing Tone - Guitar Podcast About Gear, Effects, Amps and Tone
Everyone knows the the mystical 4558 op-amp IC chip is responsible for the best overdrive tones right? I mean, even Stevie Ray insisted on it in his pedals, am I right? Right?! Joking aside, I dive through several popular op-amp IC chips and let you hear what each one sounds like in the context of Guitar Overdrive Pedal Circuitry. Well, not every one out there, but some popular ones... from $.20 IC chips to $10 versions of the popular Operational Amplifier Integrated Circuit chip. And just for kicks and giggles, I'll show you the difference between several types of diodes, and the difference when running it as a soft clipping overdrive to a hard clipping distortion. Sounds like fun, eh? Oh, and I realize the title is a little click-baity. But it's all in fun, am I right?

Many are unaware of this, but Canada did contribute to the original wave of punk bands in the late 70s and early 80s. Those bands were mostly forgotten for decades, until author Liz Worth re-discovered those early Canuck punk acts, like The Diodes. She decided to track down as many of those bands as she could find, and write a book about their recollections of the scene. The result is Treat Me Like Dirt: An Oral History Of Punk In Toronto and Beyond. The book has done the unthinkable and sold out two printings, which is unheard of in the Canadian press, let alone for a book about bands everyone seems to have forgotten about. TMLD has also helped reignite interest in those original punk bands. As a result, the Diodes are back together and performing again. This week, I chat with author Liz Worth and then interrupt The Diodes frontman Paul Robinson‘s dinner for a few questions! Tracks played on the show... 1) The Diodes, Tired of Waking Up Tired (The Best of The Diodes) "Behind Those Eyes" 2) The Diodes, Tired of Waking Up Tired (The Best of The Diodes) "Headache" 3) The Diodes, Tired of Waking Up Tired (The Best of The Diodes) "Dead On Arrival" 4) The Diodes, Tired of Waking Up Tired (The Best of The Diodes) "Time Damage" 5) The Diodes, Tired of Waking Up Tired (The Best of The Diodes) "Tired of Waking Up Tired" ALL songs CANCON

We report on the discovery and experimental characterization of a magnetoresistive effect in organic light-emitting diodes with a magnitude of up to 10% at room temperature for small magnetic fields, B = 10mT. Its discovery came as a surprise since it has often been believed that large magnetoresistance at room-temperature requires magnetic materials. We show that the effect is caused by the interaction between paramagnetic carriers. These interactions obey spin-selection rules that are sensitive to the presence of nuclear magnetic fields. We will also describe possible applications of the effect. Presented October 26, 2007.
In the midst of the steady market decline, I take a look at a stock up strongly today on improving fundamentals.
Organic Light Emitting Diodes and Light Emitting Polymers are set to revolutionize the display industry. They don't require a backlight, and are more energy efficient and offer a higher contrast than traditional LCD displays. This is a relatively new display technology that promises to deliver thin, power efficient and bright displays. These new displays, already popular in MP3 players and cell phones, have amazing potential - thin TVs, flexible displays, transparent monitors, white-bulb replacement, and more.
