From October 31 to November 12, representatives and diplomats from some 200 countries, as well as business executives, activists, researchers, industry leaders, and celebrities, will convene in Glasgow, Scotland, for the 26th UN Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP26). If history is any indication, negotiations will be driven by apocalyptic climate rhetoric and unrealistic climate goals. Countries will over promise and under deliver. Bjorn Lomborg joined Marc and Dany to discuss climate alarmism, effective ways to address climate change, the need for innovation and adaptation, and the upcoming climate negotiations. Surprisingly, Nathan had NOT seen this week's film as a very young child but alas, the guys watched Vamp (thanks to Steve and Izzy for the Listeners Choice pick!) and had some stuff to say - why is everyone turned on by the very bizarre "striptease" by Grace Jones in full kabuki makeup? Do you think Gedde Watanabe was relieved to not have to effect an "accent" in an 80s movie for once? Does this film have one of the worst payoffs to a running bit? In these sober times one can often get too hung up on heavyweight televisual analysis, and the episode has come for The Peggy Mount Calamity Hour to let its hair down. Right down, in fact. Oh yes, we are talking "shoulder length"... This week it's 1985 and it's all going on! All the very coolest aspects (and pop music stars) of the decade as you remember it finally kick in right here, as we eschew the slightly cosy Saturday morning offerings of Auntie Beeb and head down Maidstone way to drop into No 73, before hopping quietly back over the fence for some bitingly accessible social satire (do you remember cakes?) from flexuous-physiognomied funnyman Phil in Cool It! Have TVS finally perfected the 'chaotic' TV format by having an eclectic running schedule combined with not a single person in front of the camera knowing what anyone else is supposed to be doing? Is the prestige of their guest-list really worth the hole in the ozone layer above Maidstone because of all the hairspray which has to be used? And is there a statute of limitations covering the amount of time Blackout is allowed to still be unashamedly snobby about observational standup routines? The answer to at least one of those is a firm 'yes'... The Peggy Mount Calamity Hour is a free podcast from iPorle Media, which holds production copyright. 'Cool It' by Bjørn Lomborg (a Danish statistician/political scientist) is the sequel to his wildly successful book 'The Skeptical Environmentalist'. In it he argues against dramatic climate change response due to the overhype & poor ROI of the proposed solutions. The book is also largely a rebuttal against Al Gore's 'An Inconvenient Truth' and focuses upon unemotional realism and deciding upon our priorities to make the proper trade-offs.I summarised the book as follows. "It is a book of solid rational sense from start to finish. Bjørn argues against the hyperbole of global warming and is supported by a large amount of data showing why it is not an existential threat. Sensationalised media stories produced hundreds of Acid House headlines over a period of two years. Clickbait wasn't a term back then but newspapers and TV programs were manufacturing clickbait at an alarming rate. Fake news stories were firing up Middle Englanders against youth culture. They were instrumental in bringing the culture into every household in the country. Saatchi & Saatchi couldn't have designed a better marketing campaign. News reports were mostly negative and pushed certain themes. The end game is changing the law to restrict the movement of people and make ‘noise' an actual crime with penalties enforced by law.Host: Wayne Anthony (Genesis'88 / Class of 88 Author)Watch Video: https://youtu.be/KYhF1qegvBcIn This Episode*   It's Groovy and Cool It's Our Acid House T-Shirt - The Sun 1988*   Evil of Ecstasy - The Sun 1988*   Acid House Themed Fashion Ranges in Major Retail Stores - 1988*   Roof Falls in on the Acid House Craze - Daily Express - 1988*   Pukka Gear - 1988*   Acid Party Army of Baseball Bat Brutes - The Sun 1988*   Bad Trips End in Hospital - 1988*   Sounds Like a Cult - 1988*   Dodgy Advise from The Sun's Doctor - 1988*   BBC Radio Helplines - 1988*   Panic Attacks induced by MDMA*   Journalists Suggest Sexual Assaults at Parties - 1988*   Mass Acid House Orgies - 1988*   Marathon Dance Sessions Drain the Body - 1988 *   Boy George & Mark Moore Bad ExperienceSupporting the PodcastWe have only recently launched the video and audio podcast, which means we really need the support of our viewers and listeners. Cold Hard Cash for Your Greenhouse Gas When we think about what’s heating up the planet, we may picture CO2 from smokestacks and tailpipes. But there are other greenhouse gases that are even more dangerous. And some of these are hiding in garages and sheds all over the country. We’re talking about refrigerants. They’re the secret sauce behind how refrigerators and air conditioners keep things cool. But they’re heating up the planet. This week, in collaboration with NPR’s Planet Money, we take a ride with a couple of guys who tackle these climate threats with a pair of extremely high-tech tools: a van, and some cold hard cash. Then, we talk about the climate solution you could be interacting with every time you buy ice cream. Also, sign up for our newsletter if you haven’t already!  Calls to action Find out what refrigerant your local grocer uses at climatefriendlysupermarkets.org. Check out how the big supermarket chains are doing on HFCs using the Supermarket Scorecard. As for your own household fridge, if you're in the market or know someone who is, choose an HFC-free model. Learn more about how to properly dispose of your fridge, freezer, air conditioners, and other such appliances at the end of their useful lives. Of course, you can always call Tim and Gabe to help with disposal too! Check out their work at Tradewater and Refrigerant Finders. Sign Green America’s Cool It! Campaign petition. While you’re there, find a climate friendly supermarket near you and thank them! If you’re a business owner, submit a letter to the Trump Administration asking them to ratify the Kigali Amendment, the international treaty that sets the phase down schedule for HFCs globally. You would be joining many states, major industry refrigerant suppliers, and elected officials from both sides of the aisle. The AIM Act is a bipartisan bill, supported by both the House and the Senate, that effectively would enforce the same HFC phase down schedule as the Kigali Amendment without needing to ratify it – it would cut HFC use by 85% by 2035! However, it’s likely to be vetoed by the current President. So...vote, specifically, #VoteClimate. And when it comes to local candidates those really matter too for things like public transit and composting and bike lines, so please do a little digging of your own on local candidates. Finally, if you do end up taking one of these actions — do us a favor and tell us about it! We’d love to hear about what you did and what it felt like. So if you do something, record a short voice memo on your phone and send it to us at howtosaveaplanet@spotify.com. We might use it in an upcoming episode.

Ed specializes in making music with mallets, so maybe he’s not as “cool” as a guitar slinging Rock Star. But when rock stars look at his credits, they’re probably a little jealous ;-) His music has been in feature films like, The Blind Side, Scooby Doo, The Mystery Begins, The Cold Light of Day, Surviving Christmas, Into the Fire, Spirit of the Game, A Different Sun, Cool It, Mini's First Time, and The Turkey Bowl. He’s also scored music for the feature films, As the Earth Turns (34 best score awards/nominations), Fitz (Who Made Who Productions) - 2008 Alberta Film and Television Awards Nominee: Best Feature Film), and the documentary Project Colombia (The MapMakers). As if all that isn’t impressive enough, Ed has also scored a bunch of short films, including: “SHAM Therapy” (Web-series), “The Son, The Father,” “Pause,” “Little Peter Needs to Fly,” "End Zone,” “The Three Stars,” “Trauma,” “Winston,” “Those in Need,” and “A Rich Mann.” Some of his TV placements include: The Twilight Zone, Revenge, Motive, Twas the Night, Katie Morgan, Big Love, Lucifer, Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Passions, Let's Make a Deal, Doc-Block, Greek, Emeril Green, Nature, Gourmet Adventures with Ruth, Channel 5 Takes Latin, Relic Hunter, Extreme Towns, America Now, Shalom In The Home, Toddlers and Tiaras, and many others we didn’t have room to list here! But it’s mainly the Short and Indie Film Scores I want to ask him about! I’m pretty sure many musicians would love to do some film scoring, but they all have the same questions… How do I find clients? How do you get paid? Should I do one on spec to get the experience? What do I need to know from a musical perspective? How did you learn the craft of scoring to picture? How much time does it take to score a short film? How many changes do you have to make? What kind of technical stuff do you have to know? Which instrument libraries do you find most useful? And many more questions you probably want answers to! Questions or comments for Ed? Hurricanes batter our coasts. Wildfires rage across the American West. Glaciers collapse in the Artic. Politicians, activists, and the media espouse a common message: climate change is destroying the planet, and we must take drastic action immediately to stop it. Children panic about their future, and adults wonder if it is even ethical to bring new life into the world. Enough, argues bestselling author Bjorn Lomborg. Climate change is real, but it’s not the apocalyptic threat that we’ve been told it is. Projections of Earth’s imminent demise are based on bad science and even worse economics. In panic, world leaders have committed to wildly expensive but largely ineffective policies that hamper growth and crowd out more pressing investments in human capital, from immunization to education. False Alarm will convince you that everything you think about climate change is wrong — and points the way toward making the world a vastly better, if slightly warmer, place for us all. In this wide-ranging conversation Shermer and Lomborg discuss: Is the planet warming? What is the cause of the warming? How much warmer is it going to get? What will the consequences of the warming be? What should we do about it? How the public discussion/debate over climate has changed in the past 20 years since Lomborg wrote The Skeptical Environmentalist: Measuring the Real State of the World Precautionary Principle: should we do something “just in case”? What about other existential threats: AI apocalypse, nuclear weapons, pandemics? and Why climate is such a hard problem. The claims: timeline: we have a decade to solve the problem … or else droughts, floods, hurricanes, and extreme weather deforestation/reforestation polar bears/the 6th Extinction, and AOC/Greta Thunberg/Al Gore. Non-Solutions: individual action, why the Green Revolution isn’t here yet, why the Paris Agreement is failing, how climate policy hurts the poor, and reducing greenhouse gases. Rational Solutions: carbon tax: a market-based solution, innovation, adaptation, geoengineering, and prosperity. Bjorn Lomborg is the best-selling author of The Skeptical Environmentalist and Cool It. He is a visiting professor at Copenhagen Business School and at the Hoover Institution at Stanford. His work appears regularly in New York Times, Wall Street Journal, the Economist, the Atlantic, and Forbes. His monthly column appears in around 40 papers in 19 languages, with more than 30 million readers. In 2011 and 2012, Lomborg was named Top 100 Global Thinker by Foreign Policy. In 2008 he was named “one of the 50 people who could save the planet” by the Guardian. He lives in Prague. Live Right Now - Episode 030 – Cool It! Much to the delight of grandkids and overheating grandparents… there’re here: inviting ice cream trucks blaring Pop Goes the Weasel trolling neighborhood streets. When its hotter than blazes, consuming popsicles, ice cream bars, slushies, might seem like common-sense choices when you want to cool off, (spoiler alert) but they may do more harm than good. We mean well, but rehydrating our parched temple with diet soda, energy drinks, Mt. Dew, beer, margaritas, wine spritzers is not the wisest decision as caffeine and alcohol contribute to rapid dehydration. Excess alcohol consumption can cause dehydration in a variety of ways and sugary desserts, doughnuts, ice cream, muffins, highly processed breads, pasta, and grains require a lot of water to digest. Dietitians agree the temple uses a lot of water to metabolize these foods, which depletes water reserves leading to dehydration. Plus, you don’t get any nutrients, just unpleasant, disease-mimicking effects. Some symptoms of dehydration in seniors include confusion, irritability, dark colored urine, dizziness, dry mouth, fatigue, frequent urination, reduced blood flow to the extremes, sunken eyes and cheek. High blood pressure is common among the chronically dehydrated. It can also be a warning sign of dehydration Icy cold food and drinks might provide a short-lived cooling effect, but consuming these food and beverages food leads to an increase in temperature as the process of digestion is heat-generating. This combined with the rapid cooling initiated by cold food and drinks means your temple over-compensates by increasing your core temperature. So you may actually end up feeling hotter than you did! Drinking an air-temp or hot drink increases the temples heat load and responds by sweating. The output of sweat is greater than the internal heat gain, and this is where it all starts to make sense ― when the sweat evaporates from the skin, it cools us down, Dehydration is relatively preventable. Basically, take in more water than you lose. Drink water throughout the day, back off caffeine and alcohol, eat as much watery fruits and vegetables as you are able, mind your thirst levels and rehydrate accordingly, check your urine—if you are drinking enough, it should be a pale straw color. Certain fruit and vegetables score highly in this regard, so consider eating more strawberries, cucumber, zucchini, celery, lettuce, Hoosier cantaloupes, and local watermelon if we want to up the H2O. Watermelon is the juiciest and one of most colorful of fruits to rehydrate. Pedialyte, the electrolyte drink of our childhood, has suddenly become the drink of pop culture. You'll find it in pro sports locker rooms for rehydration and in our fridges to help you get through hangovers. (optional graph)   Include dark leafy-green salads with a rainbow of vegetables. Lettuce is 95 percent water so it keeps you both cool and hydrated. Throw extra cucumbers on top, which are 96 percent water. Make pitchers of cucumber, fresh mint, peaches, and strawberry water and carry a reusable water bottle with you throughout the day. Plain and simple: pure water hydration is the staff of all life. Both mother earth and our temple are two-thirds water by divine design. I doubt any garden would survive, let alone flourish being watered with anything other than the colorless, transparent, odorless liquid that forms the seas, lakes, rivers, rain and all lifeforms.   For more from Chef Wendell including the “Eat Right Now” books and info on how to book Chef Wendell to speak to your group go to http://www.chefwendell.com. Bjorn Lomborg does cost/benefit analysis on global good. There are surprises when you examine what are the highest-yield targets in the domains of health, poverty, education, reduced violence, gender equality, climate change, biodiversity, and good governance. Reducing trade restrictions floats to the top: $1 spent yields $2,000 of good for everyone. Contraception for women is close behind, with a whole array of benefits. For health go after tuberculosis, malaria, and child malnutrition. For climate change, phase out fossil fuel subsidies and invest in energy research. For biodiversity, focus especially on saving coral reefs. Most aid and philanthropy decisions are made based on persuasive sounding narratives, and we relish taking part in those stories, even if the actual results are mixed. But the results of the most pragmatic approach, built on statistics and economic analysis rather than narrative, can be stunning. Bjorn Lomborg is author of Prioritizing the World (02014), Cool It (02007), and The Skeptical Environmentalist (02001). Here is link to the Copenhagen Consensus flyer, The Smartest Targets For The World, which was shared at Dr. Lomborg’s talk.

There seems to be something missing from Christopher Pyne’s grasp on economics. As we discuss with Professor Steve Keen, the idea that deregulation will drive university prices down is based on the theoretical assumption of perfect competition. That doesn’t exist in the real world, particularly in the university sector. Instead, isn’t the outcome likely to be dumber rich students? Sounds like our education minister is missing something.Instead, shouldn’t we be focusing on a more egalitarian society, where everyone gets an equal chance of education? Balls Radio replays an interview from 2011 with Richard Wilkinson, author of "The Spirit Level: Why Equality is Better for Everyone." He says wider disparities in income add to the cost of running a country and impact on the happiness of everyone, including the rich. From the US Richard Kazimer talks about Edward Snowden’s recent interview on NBC, the opening of the September 11th museum (with some tacky gimmicks in the souvenir shop), the resignation of the Veteran Affairs Chief and Google’s new driverless car.Brian Haverty also talks about Google. When they start sending you scrapbooks of your most recent holiday is that Spooky or Cool? It’s probably pretty cool, but the same can’t be said for Facebook, when they start using your webcam and microphone to collect sounds around the house. That’s snooping. Perhaps they should merge with the NSA?All that, plus the future of Tony Abbott. Will he make it to the next election. Or even next week?
