Here we are at last with our first proper episode of 2025, but it's far from business as usual with the first official reveal of Nintendo's imaginatively titled Switch 2, which means it can't be long now until Rob get's all his games back - and this time in glorious 4K! There's also been another Xbox Developer Direct to reassure us that 2025 won't revolve around the release of GTA VI quite as much as were led to believe, with the surprise reveal of not just Ninja Gaiden 4, but a super shadow drop of Ninja Gaiden 2 Sigma on Gamepass NOW!As if Rob doesn't have enough on there to play, even having wrapped up Indiana Jones & The Great Circle since last episode! He's not even got round to fighting Ninjas thanks to the release of Citizen Sleeper 2, which builds on the foundations of it's first iteration to deliver a more complex and episodic experience this time around. And Will's trying desperately to get Marcus and Rob to join him on Helldivers 2. Happy New Year all! We hope you got all the videogames you wanted and most importantly some well earned time to enjoy them! We certainly did, in the gift of Machine Games' remarkable Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, which really didn't need to be anywhere near as good as it turned out in the end. So good in fact to receive full honours from at least one of us in our regular games of the year segment as is tradition. We also go over the big winners from the recent Game Awards show just before Christmas, as well as a detailed analysis of the big announcements. We'll be back in 12 months to see how right we were about the success or indeed, actual release, of said phenomena. Hopefully with less technical gremlins this time, which I shall leave for you, dear listener, to discover and enjoy in this most festive #NOTplaying Podcast! After that disaster-piece of an episode last time around, we thought we'd try super hard to make this one a success, it could be argued even, that we overcompensated. Rob even took one for the team and shelled out an exorbitant sum for a PS5 Pro just to make up for it. He's even had to play Star: Wars: Outlaws in it's newly patched 60FPS + DLC glory. Oh and the new Dragon Age. It's been a tough old time. It really has. And then there's poor old Marcus, with his time on the Monster Hunter Wilds Open Beta only for it to be taken away until it's proper release date early next year, at least Will was man enough to tackle S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 - Heart of Chornobyl. We hope you find this episode more acceptable, or at least how much we suffered for it :) All this and more on a somewhat glitchy #NOTplaying Podcast! We can only apologise for this one. If it wasn't connections dropping or random things banging around, it was furiously typing to look things up. It's all a bit of a mess this week sadly :( Amidst the Chaos however, we were able to lay down our highlights from the most recent online presentations from Microsoft & Sony, as well our thoughts on a couple of cool indie games which recently came out: Devolver's delightfully artistic The Plucky Squire and UFO 50, a proposition so bizarre extreme measures were implemented to deal with it. Sorry we haven't been around much this year, but have no fear listeners - we will be back very soon with our pick of the best movies and TV shows of 2024 as well as our Annual Summer Movie Wager! In the meantime, we had a bit of chat on our sister show, The #NOTplaying Podcast about the recent Prime Video series, Fallout, based on the beloved videogames and we thought this might have some crossover interest on this feed too. With the superhero well beginning to dry out, this may well turn out to be a recurring situation. We'll be back with a proper show in a few weeks time... 2024 is off to quite a start with extensive showcases from both Microsoft and Sony within the first few weeks of the year as well as a genuine GOTY contender in Ubisoft's latest refresh of the Prince of Persia franchise, which goes back to it's roots in a supremely slick take on the classic 2D 'metroidvania' action platforming genre. Will's also had the chance to finish God of War Ragnarok as well as have a quick peruse of it's recently released Free DLC, Valhalla, while Marcus has been foaming all over the imminent FFVII Rebirth and the demo that came out along with that dedicated State of Play last week. We're emerging from underneath a gigantic pile of gaming rubble this week to share our thoughts on just a handful of titles amidst the current tidal wave of autumn releases. First up is the almost podcast shattering paradox of Starfield, then we've got the latest (albeit significantly paired back) installment of Assassin's Creed and even Marcus has something new to play in From Software's non-dark-souls-but-still-hard-as-fuck mech resurrection, Armored Core VI. There's also more futuristic ultra violence in the recently released Robocop: Rogue City demo and the new Cyberpunk 2077 DLC/(MASSIVE)update, Phantom Liberty. E3 might not be happening this year, but we still have plenty to discuss this month, including release dates for Starfield and the much delayed Suicide Squad Kill the Justice League. We've also all been going a bit gooey over Sony's recent Final Fantasy focussed State of Play, so expect much more on that game when it releases in just a couple of short months time! And Rob's been having a right old spring clean of stuff he started before Christmas, so some final thoughts on God of War Ragnarok & Midnight Suns, before launching into how Team 17's Dredge has helped him fall back in love with his much neglected Nintendo Switch. While the last few weeks has seemed a bit quiet on the game release front compared to the bloodbath in February, we've let rather a lot of news stack up this time.Leading the charge is Sony, with the recently restructured digital membership offerings and a couple of State of Play's covering Hogwarts Legacy and the imminent side-scrolling cousin to Ghost of Tsushima, Trek to Yomi. There's also the wonderful news that Amy Hennig will get a chance to make her Star Wars game finally amidst a truly stacked line-up of entries in that particular franchise currently in development. As for what we've been playing, Will's chucked a bunch of time into Borderlands spin-off, Tiny Tina's Wonderlands, Rob's been using his Easter break to get to some Gamepass indies and Marcus is still making his way through Elden Ring. We'll be back some time in June once the dust has settled on whatever this year's #NOTE3 Summer of Games turns out to be. We'll be surprised if there isn't at least something Starfield-shaped at the Microsoft/Bethesda showcase announced for June 12. There's no getting around it, February was a lot. Not 1, not 2, but 3 massive open world games, more multi-billion dollar studio acquisitions and - of course - more delays. In this week's episode we analyse the fallout only to discover that all three of us are playing the same thing, although that may not be for very long given that one that it is!All this & more on an utterly bunged-up-with-open-world-games-again #NOTplaying Podcast!Contact us on Email at: notplayingpodcast@gmail.comFollow us on Twitter: @notplayingpodIf you're listening on iTunes, please give us a review!Music kindly provided by Miracle of Sound https://www.youtube.com/miracleofsoundIf you like movies & TV, why not checkout the #NOTwatching Podcast See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
We're still in lockdown, but Marcus finally got his hands on the game he's been anticipating for over a decade, Rob's finally sunk his fangs into Assassin's Creed Odyssey with a dabbling of Disco Elysium on the side and some co-op fun in Divinity Original Sin 2 and well, poor old Will is in a bit of a gaming funk. So much so that he's even given the new Fallout 76 Wastelanders expansion (?) a spin. It's been a while since we last posted an episode and to be honest we weren't expecting to be back with you so soon, but then a mutant plague got inflicted upon the world and we're all holed up in our various hobbit holes with not very much to do.There's always gaming though and oh how very much we've fallen back on our erstwhile hobby of choice. We've been subscribing to various online services, re-embracing the art of co-op online multiplayer and finally getting to play some games that until recently seemed like nothing more than a pipedream - all in a desperate bid to stay sane during these most apocalyptic of times. It's all hands on deck for a most unexpected #NOTplaying Podcast!Contact us on Email at: notplayingpodcast@gmail.comFollow us on Twitter: @notplayingpodYou can find the show notes for this show at www.notlistening.co.ukIf you're listening on iTunes, please give us a review!Music kindly provided by Miracle of Sound https://www.youtube.com/miracleofsoundTo Check out other shows in the Collection visit:http://barkerpodcasts.webs.comIncluding the #NOTwatching Podcast:http://www.spreaker.com/show/the-notwatching-podcast
This month's episode is possibly the most legit recording we've done in a while, with each of us having played at least one game from 2019! Rob's even bought a Switch (finally!). On this month's show we're still in Ubisoft-land, albeit this time of the more far and crying persuasion, as Will does his best to convince us that's it's worth going back to the series for a fifth time. On this week's show we finally get into some games we've actually been playing after all the round ups and previews at the turn of the year. It's been a slow year for us on the #NOTplaying Podcast. We dropped our episode schedule down to monthly and that's reflected in the number of games we've been able to play. We've also been leaning on some old favourites too, so even with so many great games coming out over the past 12 months, 2017 has felt like a bit of a snooze. There have been some highlights though, which we would like to share with you on our last show of the year. July was a rough month for videogames, with barely a single release worth discussing. This week's show is almost completely dominated by Japan, which is kind of appropriate given the land of the Rising Sun seems to be owning the beginning of 2017. Nintendo are about to release a new innovative console, Square Enix have multiple Final Fantasies being remade and have more than established a foothold in the conventional western videogame space with their recent reinvention of the Hitman series, which Rob has finally made a start on (and is also now available in full season retail form). So Rob finally pulled the trigger on Playstation 4 Pro so has spent his conveniently timed week off getting intimate with Sony's supercharged console. It's with a heavy heart that we wave goodbye to long-time co-host, Patrick Kay, on what will most likely be his last contribution to the show for some time. When the original Deus Ex came out in 2000 it blew the doors off player choice and expression in first person video-games. The series stumbled somewhat in the follow-up, Invisible War, but was redeemed with Eidos Montreal's Human Revolution in 2011. 5 years later, the inevitable fourth instalment, Mankind Divided arrives after some much maligned pre-order incentives and a sea of controversy over micro-transactions and dubious metaphorical parallels in game's plot. After a couple of week's of VR indulgence, it's Rob's turn to talk about some 'meatspace' games from earlier in the year. First up we have Everybody's Gone to the Rapture from the Chinese Room, which debuted last year on PS4, but arrived on PC back in April to very little fanfare at all. We then have Coldwood Interactive's curious emo-platformer, Unravel, which if nothing else certainly benefitted from EA's bank account, whilst managing to preserve a whole lot of heart & soul in the process. We talked about it a few months back when it was first demoed at this year's VR packed GDC, but now ILMxLAB's Star Wars: Trials on Tatooine demo is available to download on Steam for FREE! This week's show is a bit of a shambles quite honestly, but our schedules made it come down to a case of either brutally editing our last recording into more episodes than was really appropriate or yours truly briefly recording something for the sake of not missing a week. Suffice it to say, we went for the latter option - but only because I thought of something that might honestly be worth documenting. And by that I'm referring to my obsessively ongoing GOTY decision, which I geekily keep track of all year long. So here it is: my half-time scorecard.
