My guest today is an American writer and narrative designer for video games. After graduating from the USC School of Cinematic Arts with an MFA in Animation, he worked as an animator in Hollywood, contributing to an early version of Shrek at DreamWorks, Dinosaur at Disney, and to the music video Californication by the Red Hot Chili Peppers. In 2001 my guest joined the video game studio Naughty Dog and worked as the cinematics animation lead on seven titles including Jak and Daxter and the first three Uncharted games, a series for which he also helped to develop the storylines. He then became a staff writer and narrative designer on Uncharted IV: A Thief's End, Uncharted: The Lost Legacy, and the recent blockbuster The Last of Us: Part II. In 2020 he left Naughty Dog after more than two decades and joined Crop Circle Games as narrative director on the studio's first, as yet unannounced title. PlayStation 3's Uncharted trilogy is inarguably a vital stepping stone in the history of Sony. These three titles helped breathe life into a once-struggling console, and gave the brand amazing momentum running into the following generation. But Naughty Dog's series about a globetrotting adventurer hit a bit of a snag when PS3 turned to PS4. Partially through development, Uncharted 4 would lose its creative force and writer, Amy Hennig, leaving the half-finished projects in the hands of the two men who just delivered The Last of Us: Neil Druckmann and Bruce Straley. It was going to be a hard task to make this one work. But ultimately, the team delivered in spades. Uncharted 4 is a fitting and high-quality end to Naughty Dog's Uncharted arc, visiting an older, wiser, and more reluctant Nathan Drake who's sucked back into 'the life' by his own brother, and by his own inability to let go of the past. Wonderfully paced and beautiful to look at, and with amazing performances and fun gameplay, A Thief's End is a must-play, and we're thrilled to spend a good-long time discussing it here on KnockBack. Before we get into the show notes, we wanted to recognize an icon in the industry. Kevin Conroy, the voice of Batman, recently passed away at the age of 66. He is and always will be the voice of Batman for us and it was an honor to have met him and share the impact he had on our childhood. Rest in peace Mr. Conroy. In this episode we have our big review of God of War Ragnarok. It's the hotly anticipated sequel to 2018's God of War. This game is absolutely stunning in so many ways. We have a few complaints, but nothing that hurts the game from being the masterpiece that it is. It's bigger in almost every way than the first game. We also talk all about The Game Awards coming December 9th. We predict who will win and who we want to win from the top categories of the showcase. Who do you think will win game of the year?We also look back in time at the best beginnings of video games. Games sometimes start well, sometimes they don't. What games really hit home for you? Additionally, we talk about the best endings to games from Bioshock to God of War. Let us know your favorite beginnings and endings in our Discord channel! Finally, we discuss the pre-release beta of Warhammer 40k Darktide. It's the successor to Vermintide 2 and we have a lot of fun with it. However, is it enough to surpass Vermintide 2? It has a ton of new features and we can't wait for the day one launch to see what changes and improvements are made to the game based on feedback.Show Notes:0:52 - Housekeeping2:40 - God of War Ragnarok Review38:25 - The Game Awards Predictions1:16:18 - The Best Beginnings and Endings to Video Games1:47:14 - Warhammer 40k Darktide: Is it the Vermintide Killer?2:13:36 - Upcoming Video Game ReleasesBecome a part of the conversation!

Michael and Adam sit down with soon-to-be doxxed David C Bell and discuss the only Naughty Dog production about pirates that hide crates on wheels on a deserted island: Uncharted 4. Does Nathan Drake have PTSD from all his murders and puzzle-based close calls? Could the treasure hunters leave the island and just return with stuff to make their job easier? Is the crypt with the exploding mummies the worst part of the game? Is Dave's new nickname Sweet Meat? These are the hard-hitting questions our hosts and guest must navigate to find the much-coveted treasure that is "keep or delete." See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

This week, I played the remastered Uncharted 4 that was released earlier this year as part of the Legacy of Thieves collection for PS5. It's a very cool game but that's exactly why I didn't like it. In this text, I write about how much I prefer embarrassment over coolness as a quality in the culture I spend time with. Written version on The White Pube! Thank you to our Patreons! After tackling Metroid in season 1 and then Halo in season 2, Game Informer's Video Gameography podcast turns its gaze to one of Sony's biggest properties: Uncharted. This week we're bidding farewell to Nathan Drake by discussing his final adventure in Uncharted 4: A Thief's End. Released on May 10, 2016, Uncharted 4 was a shake-up for the series in more ways than one. Amy Henning, the franchises' primary creative mind, departed Naughty Dog during the game's development, leaving The Last of Us masterminds Neil Druckmann and Bruce Straley to revamp the game's production. Uncharted 4 introduced players to Nate's long-lost brother Sam Drake (who was originally conceived as a more villainous figure) as well as new mechanics such as a grapple hook and even dialogue choices. How did Naughty Dog tie a bow on this beloved franchise? Tune in to find out. Join hosts Ben Reeves (@BenjaminReeves), Marcus Stewart (@MarcusStewart7), and Game Informer Features Editor Kim Wallace (@kstar1785) as we unpack the history, narrative, and impact of Uncharted 4: A Thief's End. Welcome to Brothers-in-Law'd! This is a podcast where two ordinary in-laws analyze videogames, figure out the main themes and worldviews in it (what is the game communicating?), and compare that to a gospel-centered worldview. CJ Carson and DT Gallagher believe that video games are art. In being art, they're beautiful to experience, to look at, and to participate in. Another benefit of being art though is that videogames communicate something, they teach their audience something. CJ and DT want to look specifically look at what videogames are promoting in their stories and experiences. "Why does this videogame make this stylistic choice?", "What is the game wanting me to feel right now?", "How does the moment in the game affect me?" are just some of the questions the Brothers want to purposefully ask the game. Whether or not you've been interested in asking these questions while playing videogames, the Brothers hope you enjoy, are informed, and perhaps even motivated to start asking/analyzing videogames in this way! Some of the best experiences in our world today are found in videogames, and CJ and DT would echo the words from Gospel Coalition: "So consider this an invitation to treat yourself to the kind of art that may take a bit of effort to digest because it is rich, complex, and sumptuous; art that reaches out to your senses and gives evidence of the mastery that created it." This month, CJ Carson and DT Gallagher look at Uncharted 4: A Thief's End. In this episode, there is a delightful conversation of background information on the creators, Naughty Dog, what things CJ and DT liked about the game and what they didn't, the worldviews that Uncharted 4 is promoting, and then a conclusion of how the Gospel fulfills or differs in the worldviews that Uncharted 4 has. Next month, the Brothers will look at Ghost of Tsushima and have a similar discussion. Join in on playing the game and listening to the conversation! ***With each episode, the Brothers are under the impression that you have beaten this game before listening! Beat the game first if you do not want to be spoiled!***
