We first met Rian Kanouff when he set the record for most naked skydives in a 24 hour period...a feat he did to honor a fallen friend and bring awareness to suicide prevention. Now, since then, he has created Skydive First Project...an "adventure therapy" organization that is helping veterans, 1st responders and others deal with PTSD, depression, anxiety and more through skydiving...and learned all about it today
TRIGGER WARNING: This episode touches on topics related to suicide. If you're experiencing suicidal thoughts or feeling overwhelmed, support is available. Call or text 988 — it's a free, confidential help line available 24/7. Seeking help is a sign of strength, and we want you to be here. You matter.By nature, humans are drawn to the edge of existence. We hear that unsettling whisper, beckoning us toward danger, and we feel tempted to tip-toe toward it. "The Call of the Void" is a strange and primal phenomenon — thoughts of self-destruction that pop in our minds seemingly out of nowhere — from the urge to jump off a great height or the sudden desire to swerve into oncoming traffic. It's ominous. But it's not as scary as you might think. Here's the paradox: The Call of the Void is not about wanting to die; it's about appreciating what it means to feel alive. These thoughts are a reminder of the pulse of life. It's a way we feel our mortality and sharpen our existence. In this episode, we walk the fine line between intuition and impulse to discover how risk-taking behaviors can be a gateway to spiritual transformation. Risky endeavors can lead us to a "flow state" where we deepen our connection to the universe, leading to peak experiences and even mystical revelations. Are we wired to crave risk as part of our spiritual journey? And what happens when we ignore that inner voice — when we let fear and self-doubt stagnate our potential? We learn from these moments on the edge, when chaos gives way to creation. You are here for a reason, and sometimes, following that gut instinct — even if it feels a little risky — is exactly how you'll feel closer to your purpose. The universe has a collective field of ideas, and if you don't act on that pull toward something extraordinary, someone else will. When the Call of the Void rings, will you take time to listen a little deeper? Or will you be left wondering what could have been?*****************************************Questions / Journal Prompts / Meditations:What's your flow state? When do you find yourself feeling captivated by other people who are in their own flow state or engaging in behaviors you might think are risky? How does watching them make you feel? Why do you think you're captivated by them? What do you want the most in life, and what risks might you need to take to achieve those goals? If you don't know you want, ask yourself what you're afraid of and explore those fears. Chances are, if you get honest about what scares you, you'll be led to revelations about what you want the most.*****************************************Episode Resources:Movie: ThelmaSong: "Heat Death (The End of Everything)" by Sophia JamesBook: "The End of Everything (Astrophysically Speaking)" by Katie MackBook: "Sensation Seeking: Beyond the Optimal Level of Arousal" by Marvin ZuckermanBook: "Flow: The Psychology of Optimal Experience" by Mihaly CsilkszentmihalyiBook: "The Archetypes and the Collective Unconscious" by Carl JungBook: "Religions, Values, and Peak-Experiences" by Abraham MaslowBook: "Adventure Therapy: Theory, Research and Practice" by Gass, Gillis & RussellBook: "Chaos: Making A New Science" by James GleickArticle: "Do You Have The Adventure Gene?"Article: "The Confidence/Competence Loop"Study: "An Urge to Jump Affirms the Urge to Live"*****************************************Podcast & Host Resources:Clairannoyance InstagramClairannoyance TikTokClairannoyance WebsiteMegan's InstagramMegan's TikTokMegan's WebsiteRyan's InstagramRyan's TikTokRyan's Website

The discussion begins with an introduction to Stephanie's unique therapeutic approach, which elegantly combines mental health services with experiential learning and adventure, all within the embrace of nature's beauty in Marin County, California. Stephanie shares her journey as a teen, deeply intertwined with her professional evolution. She traces her passion for adventure therapy to her father, a fervent outdoor enthusiast, and her experiences at Cascade School, which she attended as a teen. Her study on a female-only trek at Catherine Freer Wilderness Therapy offers valuable insights into the healing powers of nature and adventure in therapy. Throughout the episode, Stephanie articulates the significance of integrating physical activities with psychological healing, using compelling client stories to illustrate her methods. Join Karaleigh in an interview with the adventurous Scott and Nancy Kiesling! Scott & Nancy are relationship coaches. They use their unique method of adventure therapy to help people overcome their self-doubt and fears and build an ultimate relationship with themSELF first, so they can then attract in the love they've always desired. After two years of marriage, Scott was involved in an accidental explosion at work, resulting in a brain injury, hearing loss, and vertigo. This drastically changed their life and the dynamic of their relationship causing them to create innovative tools and strategies to keep their relationship thriving and continue to create the life they dreamed to live. Today they share what they have learned with others so they can help people develop unshakeable self love, live their best life, and have amazing relationships. Scott & Nancy continue to build online courses, speak at corporate events, and host esteem-building Adventure Therapy Retreats. They have multiplied their business by 10 fold in the last year working with high profile people such as supermodels, Hollywood actors/actresses, doctors, lawyers, realtors, and entrepreneurs. They have appeared on multiple podcasts, have been featured on The List TV, Authority Magazine, Wander Magazine, and Tony Robbins recently announced that he'd recommend them as coaches because “they've lived it!” Favorite takeaways: 1. As sailors, you're never really on course. You don't lose it, you shift one degree and get back on course. And when you think about one degree shifts over a length, over a distance, over a period of time, that shift is incredibly large. 2. In the challenges is where we get to have a growth spurt, it's where we get to develop that sunshine, that light within us. 3. Are you going to stay angry? Are you going to stay in that place of resentment? Or are you going to find what it actually taught you and what the gift was? 4. Sometimes it just takes that hindsight to look back at those really horrific trials in our lives and go, oh actually I can see now how this was a miracle for my good, how this was actually meant to be, how this was just set up for my growth and my learning and for such a beautiful incredible future. 5. The light is there, I just have to take another step. Nobody can tell us how many steps it takes, but what I can tell you is that if we give up, we will find out that it was just one more step and the light was there, the door was there, the window was there for you. 6. I encourage everyone, no matter what you're going through, no matter how bad it looks in your present moment, take that next step, take that next action. 7. Faith, for me, is about the belief that when I take that next step, it's going to lead to that treasure, to that growth. 8. Every time you step out of your comfort zone it's the fastest path to self growth. 9. Change your story, change your life. 10. Don't deviate from Plan A. That next step is also called determination. We confuse the universe when we jump all over- just keep going after what it is that you deep down want, and it will start to show itself and work out. Hopestream for parenting kids through drug use and addiction
When your son or daughter has been struggling with mental health or misusing substances for any period of time, it can be hard to recall who they are without the external influence of those substances, screens, or social media. Let alone remember who they are when they get consistent sleep, good nutrition, and regular outdoor exercise. A benefit of residential therapeutic environments is that they help re-discover your son or daughter's behavioral and mental health baseline and identify what resources will impact lasting change most. In this episode, I'm talking with the founder of Pure Life Adventure Therapy, Andrew Taylor. He shares how Adventure Therapy is different from Wilderness Therapy and how it specifically supports young adults who are experiencing isolation, anxiety, and depression. While it's not designed to support young people in active addiction or those who are newly sober, it's a powerful combination of nature, fun, and deep therapy. It's a way for young adults to learn first-hand how to develop resilience for the challenges of everyday life. In this episode, you'll learn: The impact of nature on the brain and nervous systemWho Adventure Therapy is good for and who isn't a good matchThe difference between “acting in” versus “acting out” and what to watch forHow to engage a son or daughter who is regularly wearing the mask of, “I'm fine!”Why we need to be affirming of emotions and challenge our kids to exercise grit and resilience at the same timeLearn about The Stream, our private online community for moms, at www.thestreamcommunity.comWe now have a new community for dads parenting a child who struggles with substance use and mental health; The Woods: members.thewoodscommunity.orgFind us on Instagram: @the.stream.communityDownload my free e-book, HINDSIGHT: Three Things I Wish I Knew When My Son Was Misusing Drugs: www.brendazane.com/hindsightJoin my email list: www.brendazane.com/email

Janelle Thomas, better known as Coach Nelly, has more than 20 years of experience coaching under her belt. In 2018, she birthed Raising Little Rippers, where she has created an educational resource for adventurous mamas, raising the next generation of big mountain skiiers. She's a treat to learn from! Janelle Thomas started working as a Ski Instructor her senior year in college. She knew teaching littles to ski was right up her alley. Armed with a Degree in Psychology with a strong focus on Adventure Therapy, she had no idea that she would spend the next several years working in the ski industry. From Certified Ski Instructor, to Children's Program Supervisor, to Ski School Clinician, her specialty has always been working with children. As she started a family of her own, her biggest joy became raising her own three (not so little anymore) rippers, and she continued working as a part-time ski instructor season after season. Skiing can be challenging financially and physically. Risks and How to Mitigate Them: Start in young years teaching simple things like moving to side of hill when you stop (pull over like a car), and being aware of environment As they grow in skills and age, share nuggets of risk management along the way. Those become habits! Teach how to merge on trail and how to give right of way Take them out into environment and use actual moments as teachable moments Raising Little Rippers: Virtual coaching, but also meet ups with other mamas Asks individually what mamas need for tips and tricks Session also includes a movement analysis via videos sent - so you know where to go next Shares drill and game videos to help them progress through next steps When to Start Skiing: Can start kids as young as 15-months, but will take longer to progress - so set expectations. Keep it fun! Introducing them to snow, weather, flat ground work Kids 5 to 6-years-old will progress faster. Also depends on particular kid Young age - start at home!! Grow interest, curiosity, and comfort. Be willing to go in and outside. Then work on teaching them to slide (can use edgy wedge or harness). Learn wedge downhill – think “pizza” shape, then learn turns to control speed https://www.raisinglittlerippers.com/blog/teaching-tools-from-edgie-wedgie-to-ski-harness https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NdbrRuc1TRo&ab_channel=RaisingLittleRippers Learning as a Family: Learn alongside kids. Can do family private lessons at some ski skills Or adults can take lessons and then put the children in the child-specific lessons. After, come together and teach each other what you learned Raising Little Rippers will help parents progress as well How to Ski on a Budget [stay tuned in two weeks for another episode on this]: Get to know local area – thrift and secondhand stores Check during off-season for sales Watch for ski swaps – usually right before season starts (October/November) Handmedowns are wonderful! https://www.raisinglittlerippers.com/blog/how-to-family-skiing-on-a-budget Some Gear Tips: Don't skimp on helmet; you don't want any gap between ski goggles and helmet Young kids don't need ski poles Use quality gear that is breathable, warm, dry (especially mittens or gloves) Recommendations: Shred Dog Convertible Children's Ski Bibs (grow for many seasons with the kids) - https://shreddog.com [https://www.raisinglittlerippers.com/blog/the-elevated-collection-shred-dog-gear-review] Darn Tough Socks - https://darntough.com Podcast: Ski Moms Fun Podcast - https://www.buzzsprout.com/1882919/9922299-teaching-your-kids-to-ski-with-nelly-thomas The Great American Rail Trail - https://www.railstotrails.org/greatamericanrailtrail/route/ Follow Along: www.raisinglittlerippers.com Instagram – https://www.instagram.com/raisinglittlerippers Facebook – https://www.facebook.com/RaisingLittleRippers You Tube - https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCu3wl7KBxyncpZOMwH-PhZg Thank you to Keen Footwear for sponsoring today's podcast!
