It's officially the start of Christmas week, and as this episode goes to air it's exactly one week till Christmas Eve. So why not do a new Christmas movie for this last, full review of the year? Fun., Michelle Pfeiffer plays a put upon mother trying to make everything perfect for Christmas for her three large adult children, but suffering from a lack of gratitude she hits the road and leaves the family to their own devices. This week Andrew and Ted discuss Prime Video's original holiday feature presentation starring Michelle Pfeiffer, Chloë Grace Moretz, Denis Leary, Felicity Jones, and Dominic Sessa. Claire (Pfeiffer) and Nick (Leary) are hosting a family Christmas for their two daughters and son. Leading up to the event Claire has been hinting to her children that all she wants for Christmas is to be nominated, by them, as mother of the year on her favorite daily talkshow "The Zazzy Tims Show". Zazzy played by Eva Longoria. After spending days cooking, cleaning, and planning the family inadvertently leaves Claire at home as they go to the Christmas program she arranged. This "forgetfulness" triggers Claire as she jumps into her car and heads to California from their Texas home to go watch "The Zazzy Tims Show" in person. The family discovers where she has taken off too after watching her on the "Zazzy Tims Show". At that point they realize their selfishness and look to right the wrong. Tune into the show to find out if Andrew and or Ted think "Oh. What. Fun." will become a holiday classic.

For this Out Takes, we decided to get into the festive season by looking at two new Christmas themed films that explore queer stories within the family dynamic that is often overlooked in these genre. First up we took a look at ‘The Christmas Writer’ from Tello Films which is the first network dedicated to telling stories featuring and about lesbian/queer women and is the world's longest running LGBTQ+ streaming platform with the biggest library of sapphic holiday films available anywhere. Their latest sapphic holiday-themed film follows Noel, a bestselling lesbian Christmas author who loses her holiday muse and experiences writer's block, so she returns to her quaint hometown in search of renewed inspiration. What she finds is an unexpected love story that even she couldn't have written… We really enjoyed this film and jumped at the chance to speak to Christin Baker, the film's director and CEO of Tello Films, and Stacey Lee Powell, her real life partner and one of the stars of ‘The Christmas Writer’, from their homebase of Nashville. We covered a lot in this two-part interview, including the intent behind Tello Films, the importance of representation in lesbian and sapphic series, movies, and shorts plus the all-important question, what makes a great queer Christmas movie. We then moved on to ‘Oh.What.Fun.’, the new Christmas film streaming now on Prime Video, with an all-star cast including Michelle Pfeiffer, Denis Leary, Chloe Grace Moretz, Felicity Jones, Danielle Brooks, Jason Schwartzman, Eva Longoria, Maude Apatow and Joan Chen. We had high hopes for this one, especially with a queer character in the mix, so listen to our review to see if it lives up to the hype. The outstanding drama "Hamnet" is a speculative period piece about the inspiration behind Shakespeare's "Hamlet." Anchored by terrific performances by Paul Mescal and Jesse Buckley as Shakespeare and his troubled wife Agnes, it's an emotionally involving tale, adapted by director Chloe Zhao from Maggie O'Farrell's award-winning novel. Perhaps surprisingly, "Hamnet" is a better film than Zhao's previous Oscar winner "Nomadland." And speaking of Oscar, Buckley's moving performance is likely a Best Actress shoo-in. The Netflix showbiz drama "Jay Kelly" provides a role that fits George Clooney like a glove. He plays a movie star who tries to reconnect with his estranged daughters while alienating those in his entourage who've supported him. Adam Sandler gives the film's best performance as George's unappreciated manager. While somewhat engaging, there are phony elements in the movie that are uncharacteristic of the gifted filmmaker Noah Baumbach. "Jay Kelly" is a mixed bag bolstered by megawatt star power. Mel Gibson stars in the ugly, excessively violent drama, "Hunting Season." Mel and his daughter provide aid and shelter to a woman found shot in the woods, only to invoke the wrath of a vicious drug lord. This is the kind of fodder that used to be called "grindhouse cinema," prodding audiences into vengeful bloodlust. Happy Holidays! A gifted cast can't save the noisy, irritating Amazon Prime holiday farce, "Oh. What. Fun." Michelle Pfeiffer plays a put-upon mom who goes all out for her family at Christmas, but her efforts aren't appreciated…until she goes missing. None of it rings true. "Oh. What. Fun." is a lump of coal for your cinematic stocking.
