Episode 159For today's guest episode we are going back to the Italian renaissance theatre and the world of the Commedia Dell'arte. You will remember that I covered the Commedia and other early Italian theatre in season five of the podcast, but in this conversation with Serena Laiena we have much more detail about a particular theatrical couple and the world of 16thcentury Italian theatre. In her book ‘The Theatre Couple in Early Modern Italy: Self-Fashioning and Mutual Marketing' Serena looks at the birth of a phenomenon, that of the couple in show business where she focuses on the mutually beneficial promotional strategies devised by two professional performers and husband and wife team, Giovan Battista Andreini and Virginia Ramponi.Serena Laiena is Assistant Professor in Italian and Ad Astra Fellow at University College Dublin. Her research focuses on early modern Italian theatre, especially commedia dell'arte. Most of her time is devoted to the understanding of the social and cultural role of the first professional actresses in modern history. The award-winning monograph that is the basis of our discussion today was published in 2023 by the University of Delaware Press. Currently, she is working on a book-length project focusing on the correspondence by and about professional actresses to bring to light the managing roles they performed within theatre companies. For more details on Serena's book:UK link to Amazon.co.uk: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Theatre-Couple-Early-Modern-Italy-ebook/dp/B0C9F9T6RX/ref=sr_1_1?US link to Amazon.com: https://www.amazon.com/Theatre-Couple-Early-Modern-Italy/dp/1644533154/ref=sr_1_1?Link to publisher's website: https://udpress.udel.edu/book-title/the-theatre-couple-in-early-modern-italy-self-fashioning-and-mutual-marketing/Support the podcast at:www.thehistoryofeuropeantheatre.comwww.patreon.com/thoetpwww.ko-fi.com/thoetp Hosted on Acast. When you think of the entertainment industry, you might picture the glitz and glamour of Hollywood, red carpets, and award shows. But behind every breakout star and successful production, there are industry professionals like Zachary Spiegel working tirelessly to bring talent to the forefront. Zach is a casting director whose journey from actor to casting professional has been filled with passion, perseverance, and a deep commitment to inclusivity. Recently, Zach joined Beverly Williams for an in-depth conversation about his career, the art of casting, and what it truly takes to succeed in the entertainment business. Zach's love for entertainment started in an unexpected place: Buffy the Vampire Slayer. His journey took him from New York to Los Angeles, with a stop in Italy, where he studied Commedia dell'arte as a college junior. Zach pursued his acting career, spending seven years in New York honing his craft. While most actors dread auditions, Zach found himself enjoying the process. He realized that his true passion lay not in performing but in being on the other side of the table, helping to discover and cultivate talent. That's when he made the shift from acting to casting. Zach feels it's the best of both worlds; he is deeply involved in the creative process but in a way that feels more fulfilling. Zach considers casting an art form that requires empathy, business acumen, and a keen eye for talent. He views his work as a bridge between producers and actors, ensuring that the right talent gets the right opportunities. His work goes beyond just filling roles. It's about creating opportunities for members of historically excluded and marginalized communities. Zach is passionate about making sure every actor has equal access to auditions, advocating for inclusive and accessible casting calls. He explained one of the ways he does that is by using intentional language in casting notices. The way a role is described can either invite or discourage certain actors from applying. By being intentional with wording, Zach ensures that actors of all backgrounds feel welcome to audition. Many people dream of breaking into entertainment, lured by fame and fortune. But as Zach and Beverly discussed, success in the industry isn't about talent alone—it's about perseverance and hard work. “The most talented people don't always reap the benefits,” Zach shared. “Because the most talented people don't always have the ambition or desire to do it.” Ambition, networking, and resilience are just as important as raw skill. And networking isn't just about meeting people, it's about staying in touch and building relationships and ways to create mutual value. Beverly added her own perspective on this, emphasizing the power of genuine connections. Whether through a simple email, a thoughtful card, or a quick message, nurturing relationships can open doors in ways you never expect. Zach's career, much like the entertainment industry itself, is ever-evolving. Casting professionals often find themselves between projects, but rather than waiting for opportunities to come to him, Zach takes an active approach. He reads scripts and tracks up-and-coming actors as well as staying engaged with industry trends. As the conversation wrapped up, Beverly asked Zach what advice he would give to those looking to break into entertainment. His response? “Don't leave, don't die.” It's a humorous yet profound take on the industry—one that speaks to the resilience required to stay in the game. For anyone considering a career in entertainment, Zach's story is a testament to the power of adaptability, persistence, and passion. The path may not always be straightforward, but for those willing to put in the work, the rewards can be life changing. Leaving a review of this podcast is encouraged and greatly appreciated. An understanding of Dante the theologian as distinct from Dante the poet has been neglected in an appreciation of Dante's work as a whole. That is the starting-point of Dante the Theologian (Cambridge UP, 2022). In giving theology fresh centrality, the author argues that theologians themselves should find, when they turn to Dante Alighieri, a compelling resource: whether they do so as historians of fourteenth-century Christian thought, or as interpreters of the religious issues of our own times. Expertly guiding his readers through the structure and content of the Commedia, Denys Turner reveals – in pacy and muscular prose – how Dante's aim for his masterpiece is to effect what it signifies. It is this quasi-sacramental character that renders it above all a theological treatise: whose meaning is intelligible only through poetry. Turner's Dante 'knows that both poetry and theology are necessary to the essential task and that each without the other is deficient.' Learn more about your ad choices. Who finishes the Boston Marathon on a unicycle and still has energy to make the world laugh? Alex “The Jester” Feldman, the gibberish-speaking, rule-breaking performer who's redefined what it means to be a “wise fool.” On this episode of So What Do You Really Do?, Deadair Dennis Maler digs into Alex's extraordinary journey from anthropology student to Commedia dell'arte-inspired trailblazer. They discuss how a college juggling club ignited Alex's passion for physical comedy, leading him to train at the Dell'Arte International School of Physical Theater, and how a pivotal performance at Montreal's Just for Laughs launched his career. Alex shares stories about family tragedy, the unicycle stunt that turned heads (and caused some headaches), and the philosophy of being a modern-day fool with something to say. This episode is a masterclass in following your passion, bending the rules, and embracing the absurd. KEEP UP WITH ALEXWhile most comedy engages the language center of our brain, Alex's visual humor, sight gags, and light-hearted music bypasses the head altogether and goes straight to the heart.Feldman's love of music, comedy, cirque, magic and a touch of mischief ultimately gave birth to the impish rascal that audiences worldwide have come to know and love as Alex the Jester. The persona that Feldman has brought to life through Alex the Jester is one that combines the costuming and skills of Cirque du Soleil with a brand of humor that is seldom found elsewhere. He not only entertains with his hilarious routines — he inspires the audience to express themselves, and is ready to improvise with them at the drop of his floppy hat. They are co-creators.They know that, together, they've contributed to a show that will never be quite duplicated. With this shared accomplishment, many leave the performance walking on air and feeling closer to those around them. And some forget where they put their keys!He performs clean comedy. It's perfectly fine if young people are present. In fact, theaters often book him as a means of developing the audiences of tomorrow. But make no mistake- this is no kiddie show! The costuming and skills evoke cirque du soleil, with an extra dose of laughter. Most notable, Alex takes the audience on a journey. They enter the world of the wise fool, where crazy sounding gibberish makes perfect sense. They laugh at that rare sliver of humor that is understood around the world. They get involved at his interactive humor, and by the end of the show, everyone feels a little bit closer to one another.Website: https://alexthejester.com/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/alexfeldmancomedy/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/alexthejester

When a special guest gets to pick this week's movie, it's a perfect 80s time capsule with a sad situation on the penumbra of an adventure. But after the Goonies spend a week at the waterpark with Steven Spielberg, a completely different protagonist actually saves the day. What did the 80s contribute to the Commedia dell'arte? Do all Amblin films take place in the same universe? Why doesn't Astoria have a social safety net? It's the episode that imagines both its prequel and its sequel.Support the production of Greatest TrekGet a thing at podshop.biz!Sign up for our mailing list!Greatest Trek is produced by Wynde PriddySocial media is managed by Rob Adler and Bill TilleyMusic by Adam RaguseaFriends of DeSoto for: Labor | Democracy | JusticeDiscuss the show using the hashtag #GreatestTrek and find us on social media:YouTube | Facebook | X | Instagram | TikTok | Mastodon | Bluesky | ThreadsAnd check out these online communities run by FODs: Reddit | USS Hood Discord | Facebook group | Wikia | FriendsOfDeSoto.social
Serena Laiena joins Jana Byars to talk about her new book, The Theater Couple in Early Modern Italy: Self-Fashioning and Mutual Marketing (University of Delaware Press, 2023). Who were the first celebrity couples? How was their success forged? Which forces influenced their self-fashioning and marketing strategies? These questions are at the core of this study, which looks at the birth of a phenomenon, that of the couple in show business, with a focus on the promotional strategies devised by two professional performers: Giovan Battista Andreini (1576–1654) and Virginia Ramponi (1583–ca.1631). This book examines their artistic path – a deliberately crafted and mutually beneficial joint career – and links it to the historical, social, and cultural context of post-Tridentine Italy. Rooted in a broad research field, encompassing theatre history, Italian studies, celebrity studies, gender studies, and performance studies, The Theatre Couple in Early Modern Italy revises the conventional view of the Italian diva, investigates the deployment of Catholic devotion as a marketing tool, and argues for the importance of the couple system in the history of Commedia dell'Arte, a system that continues to shape celebrity today. Bart and Jenna want to tell you what their favorites films from 1962 are, but the catch is that the films can only be selected from films covered on Cinema60 so far! But first, they're going to talk about six films from 1961 that they've chosen to watch in hopes that they can snazz up their Top Tens with some bonus bangers. (Aka, basically it's just Kiss Marry Kill by a different name.)Jenna's picks for the episode are a diverse range of societal critiques, but all three are favorite genres of hers: the anti-authoritarian fable, the dark, horror-adjacent satire, and the Commedia all'italiana. Bart's pick are bit more uniform and specific - small-scale slice-of-life films about young women who've struck out on their own to make lives for themselves and end up involved in atypical relationship triangles. Six different nations are represented in their choices, providing a nice cross-section of what was going in in cinema in 1962. The following films are discussed:• Harakiri (1962) 切腹/Seppuku Directed by Masaki Kobayashi Starring Tatsuya Nakadai, Akira Ishihama, Shima Iwashita • Adieu Philippine (1962) Directed by Jacques Rozier Starring Jean-Claude Aimini, Stefania Sabatini, Yveline Céry • What Ever Happened to Baby Jane?
