ONCE UPON A GENE - EPISODE 084 Relief and Inspiration for Mothers of Children with Rare Diseases with Angel Aid Cares Founder - Cristol O’Loughlin Angel Aid Cares works to provide connection, relief and support to caregivers. The founder, Cristol O'Loughlin is sharing her story that begins with her role as a rare sibling and unfolds with heartbreak, passion, grit and grace. EPISODE HIGHLIGHTS Tell me about your childhood and how you're connected with rare disease. I am the youngest of five children. I have 4 older brothers and my oldest brother is still living. Three of my four brothers were born with Mucopolysaccharidosis (MPS) disease, also known as Hunter syndrome. My brothers were very sick and passed away at 12, 18 and 19 years old. Tell us about Angel Aid Cares. In my mid twenties, I started thinking about having a family and the questions around fertility and being a carrier of a rare and deadly disease. I started looking into genetic testing and what I learned about MPS was impactful enough that I wanted to do something about it. I met other families and children at a conference and came back with a lot of passion in my heart. I connected with my sorority sisters and we decided to fund raise with the National MPS Society. We threw parties and pulled together money, it was matched by the National MPS Society and we launched and released our first research grant. That grant went to a researcher named Dr. Emil Kakkis, the CEO of Ultragenyx. He had the novel idea to take a missing enzyme and create a synthetic version to flush through the body. That research went on to clinical trial and eventually standard of care treatment for young patients of Hunter syndrome. Young men who used to pass away in their teens like my brothers are now on active treatment. What's missing from the rare disease community is the mental health and wellness resources that Angel Aid Cares is focusing on. We launched as a 501c3 and we focus exclusively on mental health and wellness services for mothers and all caregivers in the rare disease space. What do you want listeners to take away from this episode? Sustainable self care comes from small little things you do to remind yourself that you are you. Separate from the person you're caring for, you deserve the love, empathy and care you give to others. If you need help, text SIGNS to 741741 and access the 24/7 Crisis Text Line. John O'Loughlin has been representing Laois competitively since 2005 when he first lined out for the county's minor hurling team when he was still U-16. Sixteen years later and he is still as proud as ever to pull on the blue and white jersey, as he has done every season since. An excellent underage player, he played for Laois in both hurling and football - for three years at minor and four years at U-21 - before making his senior football debut in his first year out of minor. He's the special guest on this week's LaoisToday Talking Sport Podcast where he looks back on his career to date. He chats about those busy underage days - including the incredible 2007 season when he was centre-back on the Laois U-21 team that lost the All Ireland final as well as being a key part of the minor team that won Leinster and were only beaten in the All Ireland semi-final after a replay. He looks back on the various Laois campaigns under different managers and why he has never once been tempted to take a break from the demanding intercounty lifestyle. He also chats about his club career - first with Mountmellick from underage level up and later with St Brigid's in Dublin. Plus he discusses his decision to move back to Rosenallis recently and how he thoroughly enjoyed his first season with them.

In November 2015, Pope Francis made a call to theologians to explore whether Catholic practice ought to be amended to include Christians from different churches in full participation in the Eucharist. Thomas O’Loughlin replies in his book, Eating Together, Becoming One: Taking Up Pope Francis’s Call to Theologians (Liturgical Press Academic, 2019). This is an insightful and practical book exploring theological arguments for intercommunion. O’Loughlin builds on the initial sketches offered by Pope Francis, and investigates the grammar of meals as an anthropological community building activity, the role of the Holy Spirit in liturgical practice, and the teleology of Eucharistic ritual. This is an accessible and important book contributing toward an ecumenical posture of unity across Christian traditions, and is as valuable for its approach and tone as for its penetrating insights. Tom O'Loughlin is Professor Emeritus of Historical Theology at the University of Nottingham. Large organisations are increasingly working with Indigenous suppliers in Australia to woo customers making decisions on social values rather than just the bottom line. Governments and major companies including ANZ Bank, Medibank and Australia Post are among groups using their buying power to deliver social change. This is a stark shift from a decade ago, when many firms would have dismissed Indigenous businesses as contenders for facilities management and other building services contracts. The number of Indigenous-owned businesses is growing as a result. Registrations of businesses at least 50-percent owned by Indigenous people grew 180 percent between 2017 and 2020. One high-profile benefactor is Mick O'Loughlin, a former footballer for the Sydney Swans, in Australia's Aussie Rules AFL league. He's also the founder and managing director of commercial cleaning business ARA Indigenous Services. “Growing up we were always waiting for funding to come from somewhere to play sport with other communities, but as a business owner now I can just say ‘we're sponsoring this and everyone gets a jersey, everyone gets a netball uniform'. We work extremely hard, but nothing makes me more proud to be able to do that,” he says. Hear from O'Loughlin, Laura Berry, the chief executive of non-profit Supply Nation, and Robin Burton, senior supply chain diversity and sustainability specialist at JLL, as they chat to Perspectives podcast host Rebecca Kent about why working with Indigenous businesses is climbing to the top of the corporate agenda.
