What is a conscious and inclusive leader? It is harnessing the qualities on the inside to make a strong commitment to justice, equity, diversion and inclusion to mobilize business to take responsibility for social and environmental concerns. Conscious and inclusive leaders around the world are answering this call to action, and are leading companies and creating opportunities to affect change as a force for good. In this first of several panel discussions, I’m joined by three leaders who are using their voices and influence to create a more just and inclusive world. Prior CEO of three mission-driven businesses Sheryl O’Loughlin, B Corporation movement expert Ryan Honeyman, and equity and inclusion advocate Dr. Nika White have come together to reflect on their experiences and share their wisdom topics surrounding the role of leaders in bridging the divide to create a world that works for everyone. Together we examine how leaders can ignite their inner game, have the brave exchanges that impact change and champion a world of inclusion, diversity, equity and justice. Key Takeaways: [1:46] Carley introduces the upcoming community event that will highlight the major themes of the book and reflects on the positive changes that leaders are experiencing in the wake of the pandemic. [6:47] An overview of each of the inspired and mission-driven guests that make up today’s panel and an inclusive welcome to all participants. [14:40] Who is a leader or mentor that has influenced each of the panelists in a positive way? Dr. White reflects on a mentor who intentionally guided her into a place of positive power. [19:08] Ryan shares the lessons he learned from a mentor about the importance of calling others in and Sheryl reflects on the value of slowing down and being a force for good. [23:53] What does ‘business as a force for good’ mean to conscious and inclusive leaders? Insights into the mission and focus of companies that are striving to be a force for good in all that they do. [33:05] The inner game must be developed before leaders can confidently show up at work and in the world. Sheryl reflects on the power of love in justice, equity, diversion and inclusion. [37:24] How do leaders cultivate inner self love in order to more freely express it to others? [39:45] Self-awareness and role it plays in the importance of valuing diversity, equity and inclusion. [44:46] The impact that a strong commitment to justice, equity, diversion and inclusion can have as leaders work to overcome the racial injustice in our country, beginning with their own emotional capital. [49:54] A shift from negative energy to a place of inclusion and understanding is critical to effective leadership. [53:35] The power shift that has to come in order to impact real change in our businesses and in our world. [57:00] Carley reflects on the intimate experience that even further fueled her mission to champion a world of inclusion, diversity, equity and justice. [1:00:00] The brave exchanges and courageous conversations that the panelists have experienced that resulted in a greater level of inclusivity. [1:09:07] Why is justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion so important in the world from the B Corporation perspective? I believe that we have a responsibility, as better-for-you brands, to speak for justice, equity, diversity and inclusion in our industry. Join me in conversation with Sheryl O’Loughlin of the JEDI (justice, equity, diversity and inclusion) Collaborative today, as she teaches my listeners how to begin, sustain, and regenerate a JEDI journey for your company, the food industry and the food system. Food & Beverage founders constantly ask me how to navigate current events, politics, and topics around systemic racism & white supremacy with their brands. Questions around knowing what to say, when to say it, and how to speak up are common, and it can be daunting to take a stand as a brand, knowing that it might alienate some customers and have a negative impact on your sales. If you’ve struggled with how to start this important work, tune in to today’s episode. From there, find the full show notes, Sheryl’s contact information, and the JEDI Collaborative’s website linked right here. This episode is sponsored by my Retail Roadmap! The natural products industry is less diverse than the general population in terms of the consumers we serve and the individuals that lead our companies. Yet, this market is full of people who want to improve the justice, equity, diversity and inclusion (J.E.D.I.) makeup of our cultures, customers and consumers. The first step in education, especially for those who are just becoming aware of the privilege they hold in society and the ways they operate within an unjust system. This podcast with Laura Dickinson and Sheryl O’Loughlin, cofounders of the J.E.D.I. Collaborative discusses the resources available and actions brands can take to further J.E.D.I. in the natural products industry.

Sheryl O'Loughlin, formerly Clif Bar and Plum Organics CEO has had a storied career as a serial entrepreneur, but realized along the way that sometimes taking a step back is the only way to achieve success. Hear how Sheryl found a balance between business, health, and family, and how the magic of REBBL brought her back into the startup life.
Sheryl O’Loughlin is ready for a change. It’s not that O'Loughlin, the CEO of adaptogenic beverage brand REBBL, doesn’t love her current job; since joining the company in 2015, she’s embraced the role, the company and its passionate commitment to social responsibility. Rather, she believes that a business’ ability to constantly evolve and to take a progressive approach to the times at hand can ultimately spell the difference between success or failure. In an interview included in this episode of Taste Radio, O'Loughlin noted, “it’s really a matter of us thinking about the market, or even our companies as a constant experimentation to see what works and what doesn’t work versus thinking about it as this is the decision we’ve made and we’re done.” Listen to our full-length conversation with O'Loughlin, in which she spoke about the trials and tribulations of leading fast-growing companies, the urgency of supporting equality in the workplace, why she believes that successful business relationships are built on empathy and compassion, and why entrepreneurs need to start turning their phones off. Also included in this episode: A chat with Paul Coletta, the CEO of fresh, organic food and juice company Urban Remedy, which recently added $17 million in new funding from General Mills’ business development and venturing unit, 301 INC. And in the latest edition of Elevator Talk, we heard from Martin Kabaki, the founder of innovative tea brand Kabaki Purple Tea. Show notes: 2:24: So Much Sparkle To Speak Of -- With LaCroix leading the charge, sparkling water has emerged as one of the hottest categories in the beverage industry. As a deluge of new products and brands -- from massive players like Nestle Waters and PepsiCo to regional upstarts -- come to market, the hosts discuss the various paths that companies are taking to make their mark in fizzy water. 8:25: Interview: Sheryl O'Loughlin, Plum Organics Co-Founder, REBBL CEO -- Throughout her 25-year career as an entrepreneur and executive, Sheryl O'Loughlin has been known as a passionate leader with a deep commitment to social responsibility. She led Clif Bar as its CEO for nearly 10 years spearheading growth from $100 million to $200 million in revenue and later co-founded and helmed organic baby food company Plum Organics, which reached $100 million in sales before being sold to The Campbell Soup Co. in 2013. Currently the CEO of elixir brand REBBL, O'Loughlin discussed the highs and lows of her remarkable career and approach to leadership in the challenging food and beverage space. 50:52: Interview: Paul Coletta, CEO, Urban Remedy -- What a difference three years make. When we first met Paul Coletta in 2015, the newly appointed CEO of organic food and juice company Urban Remedy was primarily focused growth through direct-to-consumer sales. The strategy was to leverage the company’s small brick-and-mortar presence to drive sales and build awareness for its e-commerce platform. Urban Remedy has since pivoted to an omnichannel strategy that embraces retail placement in natural grocery as much as it does online sales. We sat down with Coletta at the 2018 Winter Fancy Food show and discussed the company’s pivot and the reasoning behind it. 1:10:00: Elevator Talk: Martin Kabaki, Founder, Kabaki Purple Tea -- Driven by a social mission, Kabaki is an innovative brand of ready-to-drink teas made from antioxidant-laden Kenyan purple tea leaves. Founded by Martin Kabaki, the company donates 10 percent of profits to provide access to better medical care for the people of Kenya. We spoke with Martin about the launch and development of Kabaki, a finalist in New Beverage Showdown 14, in this edition of Elevator Talk. Brands in this episode: LaCroix, Purity Organic, Wave Soda, Cape May Brewing, Virtue Sparkling Energy, Phocus, Poland Spring, Polar, Bubly, Nestle Waters, Clif Bar, Plum Organic, REBBL, Urban Remedy, POM Wonderful, Jamba Juice, Pinkberry, Kabaki Purple Tea

"Have Bold Humility" Sheryl O'Loughlin 1. Sheryl shared how we all will have moments where life will eat us up. It is in the challenging times where we realize we are not alone and that we will make it. She invites us to navigate through the more difficult times by breathing into the moment and moving through it step by step by step. Minute by minute, day by day. If there is something challenging in your life right now can you dial it back to moving forward breath by breath. Knowing that this too shall pass, it will get easier and one day you will be able to help someone else move through the dark and back into the light. 2. Is there a relationship in your life that could be strengthened simply by being courageous and by asking the other person what it is that they need? Sheryl shared her mistakes as well as her successes especially when it came to parenting. I love that she reaches out and asks her children to help her to understand their feelings and how to help them move into their best self. I think this is a wonderful lesson for us all. We often think we should know all the answers especially when it comes to our family and close relationships. Can we stop thinking we should know it all and instead become vulnerable and ask for help. How can we improve our dialog, our interactions and elevate the quality of our connections by asking, listening and then responding with kindness and compassion. 3. Sheryl and I talk about the difference between guilt and shame. Guilt is feeling bad about what you did, shame is feeling bad about who you are. Is there something you need to change in your inner dialog, that would remove any blame and feelings that may wash you with sense of shame? We are human beings and in that simple fact we will make mistakes and especially when we look back to see how we could have done things differently we can often confuse what we did for who we are - There is nothing wrong in making mistakes - but remember you made a mistake – you are not the mistake – ever. 4. What is your North Star? What is your purpose, what is your guiding light? Sheryl talks about her purpose being her guiding light and how REBBL the company of which she is the CEO – was first a cause that was looking for a company. What is your guiding light, your north star? What is your Why – what fuels you to get up each day and contribute your voice to this world? Do you need to nurture your why? We can only inspire others to the degree we feel inspired, perhaps take some time this weekend to reflect on your why, and refill your inspiration tank – after all this will be your fuel for your dreams 5. Sheryl shared what is important to her these days and the boundaries and guidelines she sets for herself. I love all of her heart centered metrics for success and so as I read them reflect if there is one that resonates strongly with you. Perhaps you can spend the weekend exploring ways to cultivate and strengthen this part of you and your essence. Connect to your tribe and share what is real Protect your self worth Bring love into everything you do Have bold humility
“What we need to understand is the ups and downs so we can kind of hack our way through the branches of the dark to stay in the light” Sheryl O'Loughlin What a privilege and pleasure to talk with Sheryl O'Loughlin. A candid interview where Sheryl shares both her highlights and the struggles. We begin talking about her history with Clif Bar and the winding journey that brought her to her current position as the CEO of REBBL. We talk about the factors that led Sheryl hit a wall. At a time when everything should have been thriving, two new companies between her and her husband, suddenly everything crashed and they were about to lose everything. When everything else was spinning out of control Sheryl reveals that the only thing she could control were her numbers - the miles run and the numbers on the scale and so her journey into anorexia began. Slowly bit by bit, she dug herself out of this place. In her book Killing It! she shares both her struggles and the her life lessons. As with most lessons it was in the dark times where she realized that she had to slow down, reflect and begin to live in a way that allowed her to be at her thriving best, and through her book, also help others do the same Sheryl talks about what it takes to get started in a new business and how to cultivate the skills and mindset to survive as we thrive. Sheryl talks about believing in leadership skills that are heart centered, and how she found the courage to bring her full self to the brands that she now works with. She reveals her strategies on how to stay afloat during the dark times and we discuss that when we finally let go of striving to be perfect, we are able to find and live in our truth and uncover our best selves. Sheryl candidly shares her experience of being judged by some of her “best” friends around her parenting skills and we talk about shame. An important conversation about how as women we often shame ourselves when we feel separate to others. No one ever said being an entrepreneur was easy, but what a many people don’t know are the psychological struggles like depression and anxiety that also come with it. Every day, even sometimes every hour, there are ups and downs causing a constant battle of emotions in their mind. Entrepreneurs tend to struggle silently not to show their vulnerability. Not until lately have entrepreneurs come forward to talk about these struggles, including today’s guest, Sheryl O’Loughlin. She is the former CEO of Clif Bar, CEO of Plum Organics and she is currently CEO of REBBL super herb beverages. The guys talk to her about her new book Killing It: An Entrepreneur’s Guide to Keeping Your Head Without Losing Your Heart. Entrepreneurs juggle so many roles when building their business. Sheryl knows firsthand how difficult it can be to balance business, family and mental health without one or more pieces falling by the wayside. When she began to struggle with an eating disorder she realized something needed to change. In Killing It, she shares her experiences being an entrepreneur running two fast-growing companies. When in start-up mode, some business owners severely neglect their health which makes them much less resilient. Not eating properly, not getting enough sleep and not exercising will just make the daily stressor harder to deal with. Sheryl wants to mentor and inspire others to invest in their wellbeing. She says without that “Your business will not succeed, nor will you”. Growing a new business can become an obsession for entrepreneurs. Although maintaining meaningful, supportive relationships are crucial, family and friends who are trying to support them ofter times get pushed away. This comes at a huge cost. Many relationships end in a divorce, friendships break down and all that’s left is a feeling of isolation and abandonment. Entrepreneurship can be one of the most rewarding career paths but it isn’t an easy road. In Killing It, Sheryl shares her journey and provides her readers with guiding principles for anyone looking to balance their career, family, and life. Learn more about your ad choices.
