With 40 days to go and voters paying attention, Vice President Kamala Harris and former president Donald Trump are vying for the upper hand when it comes to their plans for the economy and border security. Former Senator Claire McCaskill distills who has the winning arguments with her co-host this week, former chair of the RNC and co-host of MSNBC's The Weekend, Michael Steele. The duo then get some insights into the integrity of our election process and why we should all feel good about the safety and security of the vote, with Benjamin Hovland, Chairman of the U.S. Election Assistance Commission. And before wrapping up, Claire and Michael explain why late September is the season for opposition research dumps, with some notable examples in North Carolina, Maryland and Ohio. Further reading: As Claire mentioned, here is a Harris-Walz campaign fact sheet on their economic plan. Want to listen to this show without ads? Sign up for MSNBC Premium on Apple Podcasts. This week, host Tim Boyum takes us inside the world of political opposition research. We've all seen the ads, heard about salacious accusations or ready stories about political candidates. And most of that comes from what's known as opposition research. He talks with two North Carolinians involved in some of the more famous opposition research cases in recent times. Republican Charles Hellwig helped dig up information on 2020 U.S. Senate candidate Cal Cunningham, and David Wheeler discovered and released several things about 2022 candidate and U.S. Representative Madison Cawthorn. Both candidates ended up losing. The two argue opposition research is vital for a campaign and not some dark room operation.

It wasn't long after his election to Congress last fall that people began to realize that George Santos was not what he'd seemed. But how did he get elected to begin with? Why did it take so long for the national media to pick up on Santos's many, many embellishments? Where was the opposition research on this guy? On episode 61 of The Politics of Everything, hosts Laura Marsh and Alex Pareene chat with TNR staff writer Daniel Strauss about the first two months of Santos in Washington; with political consultant and campaign veteran Tyson Brody about the rules of the oppo-research game; and with TNR deputy editor Jason Linkins about Santos's durability and what that says about the health of our political culture.
