After getting caught with drugs, a teenager is sent to prep school by his strict father. Listen as we discuss movie trailer phone etiquette, evil blonde boys, and how James feels about 1970s rock. Then we see if Outside Providence stands the Test of Time.
This week, our exit has us looking at two high school coming of age films that take place in two different decades. First, we have Outside Providence, written by the Farrelly brothers. Second, we have Drive Me Crazy. Both films show seniors in high school trying to navigate their social lives while also balancing complicated romantic entanglements. Outside Providence, taking place in the 1970s, looks at a working class guy who ends up at a Connecticut boarding school. Drive Me Crazy takes place in the present as two teenagers prepare for their high school's centennial. Along the way, Tripp and Ross are distracted by the baffling nature of both films, along with discussions of TGIF TV, James Dean, Connecticut, accent work, Siskel & Ebert, and an ending so confounding that they have to dissect it beat by beat. All of it adds up to one of the longest episodes yet, but they couldn't stop talking about these films like a deer in headlights!
In the first of two more guest episodes, Ciara and Dean are joined by Dr. David Clare to discuss the Farrelly brothers' lost child, Outside Providence. They talk about its odd place in their filmography, its portrayal of Irish-American identity, and how much Gabriel Mann looks like James Spader in Pretty in Pink. Dildos, Drugs and Assbags! We talk about them all on this week's review of 1999's "Outside Providence"
If you love Rhode Island accents, relish period pieces that forget the period and hate Gene Lyons, our "Outside Providence" podcast is the episode for you! As Ash and Big Dildo dig into this 1999 Farrelly Brothers comedy (written, not directed), they discover the limits of Alec Baldwin's acting, question the movie's pointless inclusion of dark scenes and seriously doubt Shawn Hatosy's sexual prowess. Ash points out that "Outside Providence" marks the tail end of the Age of Prep School Movies. And Dick offers handy tips on how Ritalin can maximize your fire watch. What do you get when you combine late night theatre, a buck knife, and the New York City subway? A classic Michael Corrente story, that’s what. Equally comfortable as a Writer as he is a Director, Corrente has cemented his reputation as an "Actor’s Director”, time & again having had the finest actors in America gravitate towards his projects. All told, the actors he has Directed have amassed a combined total of no less than 53 Golden Globe & Academy Award Nominations, earning 15 Golden Globes & 3 Academy Awards between them.In this episode, the highly respected Writer, Director, and Producer recounts his experiences of growing up in a most wise(guy) of climates in the mobbed up streets of Rhode Island’s Federal Hill, through being saved from the consequences of that life by his father introducing him to the captivating world of cinema. And most inspiringly: how Dave Mamet’s groundbreaking play AMERICAN BUFFALO not only changed Corrente’s life, but the unbelievable-but-true story that years later, led to Mamet selecting Corrente to direct the film adaptation.Join us as we find out how he began his longstanding friendship and collaborations with award-winning talents the likes of Peter & Bobby Farrelly (Dumb & Dumber, Outside Providence) and Terence Winter (Brooklyn Rules, Wolf of Wall Street). And as well, perhaps a glimpse into some of just why Corrente was only the second Director that master craftsman Alec Baldwin ever agreed to work with a 2nd time — the first being, Martin Scorsese.
This week, the Four Old Millennials are breaking down the alleged coming of age comedy, "Outside Providence." We discuss why the Farrelly Brothers disowned this film, the ham-fisted treatment of George Wendt's coming out scene, try to figure out why our romantic leads seem to hang out in an abandoned house all the time, present our ideas for how to make this movie actually worth watching, and get a dose of Dave's solid Boston accent. As always, subscribe, rate, review, and follow us on Twitter and Instagram @RecapNGownPod!
Shawn Hatosy has been killing it as Andrew "Pope" Cody on TNT's Animal Kingdom for four seasons now, and with the recent renewal announcement for season 5, we're happy that there's more criminal mayhem to come from the Cody family. Hatosy had his directorial debut for an episode last season, and this week's episode entitled "Julia" was also directed by the longtime TV and movie actor of Outside Providence and Southland. He came on The Fourth Wall to talk about his experience as a director and the character development for Pope, and he also acknowledges a coincidental personal connection to our podcast host and editor, Michael Ahr. This week in the balcony, the boys finally make good on their promise to cover the films of New England and step outside the comforts of their beloved Massachusetts and land in Pawtucket, RI, a city that is very much Outside Providence. That's right! It's the 1999 stoner comedy about a boy named Dildo, his buddy named drugs, and a three legged dog named dog? I don't really remember. But he was three legs. Does this film hold up 20 years later? Did it hold up 20 years ago? Outside Providence stars Alec Baldwin, Shawn Hatosy, Amy Smart, and the beautiful city of Outside Providence. You don't have to be a grad student at Brown University to enjoy this show. Just a fan of insightful commentary from America's Dumbest Film Critics.
On today’s episode of Tarot for the Wild Soul, we have the amazing, brilliant, and divine Jack Ferver as our embodiment of Queen of Wands! Jack Ferver is a New York based writer, choreographer, and director, and the co-host of the podcast, “Dance and Stuff.” His genre defying performances, which have been called “so extreme that they sometimes look and feel like exorcisms” (The New Yorker), explore the tragicomedy of the human psyche. Jack’s works have been presented in New York City at the New Museum; The Kitchen; The French Institute Alliance Française, as part of Crossing the Line; Abrons Arts Center; Gibney Dance, and Performance Space 122, to name a few. His work in film and TV includes “Outside Providence,” “Gayby,” and “Strangers with Candy,” among many other credits. Queen of Wands is the witch of the deck. Ruled by fire and water, this being is the embodiment of alchemy, creating magic, ceremony, ritual and channeled medicine wherever they walk. When we embody Queen of Wands, life becomes ceremony, and we allow ourselves to be a living vessel for Divine to come through us, regardless of what medium or method we are practicing with. As the creator of such fierce and intense channeled works, Jack is truly a witch before all else, desiring for their work, writing, and theatrical pieces to be of highest service. Jack also has a beautiful embodiment with The Magician, Seven of Cups, and Knight of Wands. The Magician because of Jack’s creative, channeling process — how he brings things that are within him, out of him into the world; Seven of Cups because of Jack’s amazing ability to rest in the deep dream space, allowing ideas to form from different varieties of media and medium; Knight of Wands, because Jack truly is a living embodiment of moving through the world as yourself, in a way that only you can. Topics in this episode: • How Jack connected with Michelle Pfieffer’s performance of Catwoman in his most recent theatrical piece • Jack’s process of creation, and allowing the muses to come in • How his experience training in Martha Graham technique opened his eyes to the kind of work he wanted to create • The kind of self care he needs to utilize before his immense performances • Psychic dramaturgy • How Jack’s experience of being an abused, bullied kid has inspired him to create work that helps and heals, and so much more! One of the quirks of 1999 is that the year produced several high-profile entities’ most off-brand films. Included among these is David Lynch’s not-weird “The Straight Story,” Eddie Murphy’s not-funny “Life,” Disney’s not-musical “Tarzan,” and Rob Reiner’s not-good “The Story of Us.” Add to that “Outside Providence.” Emily Fox (Hindsight, Girlfriends Guide to Divorce) joins us to discuss the Farrelly Brothers-written, coming-of-age, stoner dramedy that doesn’t have any bird’s heads falling off, one-handed bowlers, conjoined twins, or even one drop of semen in any character’s hair.
This week the guys discuss their favorite Beach Boys song before they talk movies. They only have one big film to talk about, so they spend some time catching up on others they caught recently. In a segment of “Evan Can Wait” aka “Crewind,” Evan shares his experiences watching CADDYSHACK (6:08) and OUTSIDE PROVIDENCE (14:01) again, as well as his first-time viewing of the romantic OUTSOURCED (20:00). Then Dave recaps his latest time through A FISTFUL OF DOLLARS (26:29), where he talks about what it has in common with other Sergio Leone Westerns and samurai films. Lastly, the guys all team up to review SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING (33:40), a Marvel superhero outing that they all really enjoy with believable teenagers facing believable troubles.

What makes you laugh? Is it the observational stand-up of Louis C.K.? Sketches on Saturday Night Live? Mark Maron’s podcast that you always listen to first before EQ? You see, comedy is subjective. What makes one person laugh probably won’t make another person laugh, and humor is rarely an acquired taste. It’s not like you turn thirty and suddenly like Seinfeld. Well, maybe that’s a bad example. The point is, you either get the joke or you don’t. In the early nineties, The Farrelly Brothers struck gold with a string of blockbusters that seemed to make everyone laugh. Dumb and Dumber. There’s Something About Mary. Kingpin. Outside Providence. Shallow Hal. Fever Pitch. You couldn’t escape their slapstick premises and earnest storytelling that made them the two of the most successful writers and directors in Hollywood. They’ve worked with comic icons like Bill Murray, Jim Carrey, Ben Stiller, Jack Black, Alec Baldwin and Jimmy Fallon, but as Bobby Farrelly, Class of 1977 recently recounted at a Phillips Academy All-School meeting, the brothers had no real movie-making aspirations growing up, and sort of fell into the trade after a few failed ventures in Los Angeles. Upon his first visit back to Andover in forty years, Bobby sat down with Neil Evans to talk the current state of comedy, how to be funny in today’s politically correct climate and what he learned from being kicked out of Andover.
You can't possibly be reading this and not know who were talking about this week. Currently, he does a scathing impression of our President. Before that, he made the two films we're talking about this week. Outside Providence has not, to date, won any awards. So that's an island of sanity. If it had, I would no longer count on my interpretation of the world. But there's some fun moments in there. In Glen Garry Glen Ross? Every character is it all times, on some level, reacting to Alec Baldwin's performance as Blake. He thrusts this movie's first act into being. And he brings his balls. And we're on Twitter: @SinisterPurpose, @RumpleSchlepp Tell a your friend who's unhappy with their job with Mitch & Murray to start listening to us! We produce this podcast with healthy doses of love for fans of Movies, Film, Cinema, Podcasts, Actors, Acting, Filmmaking, Directing, Drama, Comedy & Alec Baldwin
Hil Holla joins us on the latest episode of Flanny & The Professor. They talk about the surprising Western Conference Finals, Cleveland's playoff performance and Dereck Fisher's divorce settlement. The Professor introduces The Bag Report, a new weekly segment, then dive into an interview with Hil and discuss Outside Providence. Thank you for continuing to listen to the show. Please share the show and send us your feedback. See you next week!
Jon is a sensitive guy who gets misty easily. Molly loves movies about family dynamics and doesn't give a flying F--K about your "Star Wars." Put it together and you get a "so-good-we-had-to-make-it-a-two-parter" episode of Clearing The Queue. The banter flies as they discuss "empathizing" with Richard Dreyfuss in "What about Bob," speech impediments, and shared "awkward parental movie viewing experiences" --- then Matty tops them all when he recounts the legendary aftermath of seeing the movie "Kids" with his parents as a teenager (no bullshit it's amazing). MOLLY AND JON'S QUEUE FINALISTS: "Casa De Mi Padre" (2012), "Being Elmo" (2011), "Outside Providence" (1999)
We had Hil Holla come through The Note Cast and talk it up with us! He spoke with us about his upcoming project, "Outside Providence", his brand, his music, sports and much more. "Outside Providence" drops in May, without a doubt. Enjoy!

Steve's brother Brian comes home for the Thanksgiving Holiday. Adam assumes the role of host, dissecting the Siberine brothers' relationship by asking about their adolescence. After fondly reminiscing about their childhood butcher knife chases, they discuss everything from their favorite bands (Ween, Tom Waits, and Dark Star Orchestra to name a few) to the movies that made them men (Outside Providence, Jaws, and The Big Lebowski). Brian also recounts the first time Steve ever puked, and it was last week.
