In this episode of the Fret Files Podcast, Eric talks about vintage pre-war (pre 1940) Washburns and discusses the book "Washburn Prewar Instrument Styles" by Pleijsier Hubert. Then, Eric answers questions from listener emails including how to remove superglue from a finish, how to properly cut a Fender style nut, and setup tips for those finicky Jazzmasters. Also, something of a follow up from the pictured P-Bass bridge, but it still remains a mystery.

Brian Ritchie is our first guest whose primary instrument - the one that helped make his band Violent Femmes a household name - is an acoustic bass. Today we hear how all that came to be, the band's path from busking on the streets of Milwaukee to rocking stadiums, and why their approach really hasn't changed all that much. Along the way he tells some funny stories about early gigs, opens up about a new acoustic bass he's gotten his hands on and even shares what Flea told him about working with producer Michael Beinhorn. Also - and this will make sense after you listen - here are two updates to things I say in this episode: My amazing engineer/mixer Matt Noble pointed me to lutefish.com, a hardware-software set-up that does enable near real-time jamming over distances less than 500 miles. I haven't tried it out, because it requires being hardwired to my modem and that's too far away from my basses. Parquet Courts' (fantastic) bassist Sean Yeaton doesn't play a stock short scale bass - it's a frankenbass made up of the body and pickups of an ‘84 Fender Bullet bass (short scale) and the neck of a '50s P-Bass reissue (standard scale). It also has a weird hole in it. Violent Femmes (https://open.spotify.com/artist/0rpMdBzQXf7aYRnu5fDBJy?si=XfFHPeSkTUyqNHhdWKdAgQ) Brian Ritchie's solo stuff (https://open.spotify.com/artist/5VlujeJlkf1SEspNUbdhq8?si=pREJiCIQQJKztGtRFon1Og) Big Johnson Basses (https://bigjohnsonbass.com/) - Brian Ritchie's next new favorite bass? Kurt Ballou takes tone very seriously. He's been on the leading edge of aggressive guitar sounds since 1990, and Converge's fourth album, 2001's Jane Doe, is still seen as a game-changing release, with its ferocious performances and masterful production. His sonic temple, God City Studio, is the destination for artists looking to make their rawest, heaviest, brutalist work. Ballou has even developed a gear brand (God City Instruments) that includes guitars, pedals, and pickups, all in the pursuit of turning ideas into art.During our conversation before Converge's sold-out performance at Nashville's Basement East on May 22nd, Ballou dove into his Line 6 Helix spice rack and shared how 30 plus years as a guitarist and in-demand producer have informed his guitar-design philosophy. Plus, he detailed why his goal is to get to a place where “gear doesn't matter.” And then, longtime bassist Nate Newton joined the fun by showing off his “Riffblaster” setup and how a special P-Bass helps him honor a dear friend.Brought to you by D'Addario String Finder.

Show Notes  Jazz Bass Vs P Bass. We have all heard them, but do we know the difference?  This week is a deep dive into the differences between the two iconic instruments. Where do they come from? Who plays them? What do they sound like? Which one should I play?  All that and more this week on Just the Bassics.  P Bass  P Bass was the de facto, go to instrument for bassists in nearly every style of music. It is making it’s comeback now because of its full, fat sound without piercing highs. The bread and butter of the P Bass is it’s ability to “sit in the mix” and serve the music. It is popular with round wound or flat wound strings, though a good sets of flats is particularly desirable on a vintage P Bass. Typically, they have slightly wider necks and lighter bodies, giving them that full sound. This is partially due to the fact that the players using P Basses were switching from Upright Bass.  The Precision Bass gets its name from the pickup, a precision pickup. 1951 single coil The design of the pickup was created to get rid of the signature hum that was heard from a J Bass. Visually the difference is very obvious. The P Bass is centered in the body of the bass and has two offset coils 1957. They slightly overlap in the middle. They are the original “humbucker” pickup and they work by having one of the two coils magnetized north and the other magnetized south. Then, they were wound in opposite directions (clockwise v counter clockwise) and run in series (they work together, but not at the same time. Power goes from one to the next). The offset overlap actually helps to widen the tonal range of the pickup (more bass but also more treble).  It is perfect for Rock and R&B, but can be used in nearly any style of music. Some Artists that are known for using a P Bass are James Jamerson, Carol Kaye, Duck Dunn, Sting, and Duff McKagan.  Jazz Bass  The Jazz Bass is the tool of legends like, Marcus Miller, Jaco Pastorius, Geddy Lee, and fFea . It is known for a scooped sound that has a big bottom end and clear highs. It doesn’t not sit in the mix like a P bass does, rather it cuts through more aggressively. This makes it the perfect tool for a bassist that wants to be heard or play intricate lines that can become muddy if the tone is too warm. J Basses are known for having thinner necks and slightly heavier weight bodies, making them more accessible for guitarists to switch over to or for players with smaller hands.  Jazz Basses do not use a single offset pickup like the precision bass does, but instead it uses two separate pickups, one on the neck and the other on the bridge. The have a brighter sound due to 1) being single coil pickups tuned to pick up higher frequencies and 2) the bridge pickup being located, well, close to the bridge. The strings are tighter there and therefore have a brighter sound than at the neck.  Which One Should You Play?  If only the answer were that easy. It boils down to two major things: What sound do you need? What is your preference?  I personally prefer the sound and feel of a J Bass. Something about it makes me feel different that a P Bass does. The crispness and sharpness of the sound speaks to me and the way I want my music to sound. However, I generally find myself playing a P Bass lately.  The P Bass has the sound that checks all of the boxes for my current projects. The Jazz Bass didn’t fit into the music the way that P Bass does. The warmth and fullness is what I need for the right sound. In my case, my needs trump my preference.   Are There Other Options?  Of course! The most common alternative is the Musicman style pickup. This has a more growly sound and is used by Joe Dart.   There are also new pickups out that use infrared lasers instead of magnets to read the string’s vibration. The advantage is near infinite sustain because the magnetic field doesn’t slow down the string. The drawback is that it picks up every overtone, harmonic, ring, or accidental touch. Because of that, if you choose to play this style instrument you will need to perfect your muting technique (though, you should probably do that anyways).  One of our favorite options is the P/J Style. It is exactly what it sounds like: A Precision neck pickup and a Jazz bridge pickup. This provides one of the largest tonal varieties that you can ask for.  The most common options are P and J basses because of their versatility and familiarity. Either way, you can’t go wrong as long as you use the sound that will serve your music.  Links  Seymour Duncan on Pickup Styles: https://www.seymourduncan.com/?post_type=post&s=Jazz+Pickup Fender on Jazz Bass vs P Bass: https://www.fender.com/articles/how-to/precision-bass-or-jazz-bass-which-is-right-for-you Spotify Playlist: https://open.spotify.com/user/bpelkdoz61rtjou6fivwjuq1u/playlist/0Y3sjgSWWZQjZUBFUZy0Tp?si=XGIHrisfT629iz__t6xz0Q  Reddit: https://www.reddit.com/r/JustTheBassics/  Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/justthebassics  Other Episodes: justthebassics.com/podcast  Blog: justthebassics.com/blog    The post Jazz Bass Vs P Bass appeared first on Just the Bassics.

In a world that smashes people's dreams, it's refreshing to hear some stories from a human who's had their dreams come to fruition. Seth Ondracek lives the dream (by working his ass off), having arrived in New York six years ago from Omaha, Nebraska with nothing but a P Bass and the desire to make his living.  His stories of personal transformation are that of legend and all in the commitment of serving the music. He is now the bassist for some of the coolest bands in NYC: Motherfeather, Hollis Brown and America's Party Band, The Barnstorm (!).  We sit down with a Pamplemousse La Croix* (natch) and get the scoop on why he only has black basses and animals, why he made major lifestyle changes to improve on his music, and how he became the king of Omaha at age 21.   *I appresh the article about how they are getting sued and how it's toxic. Thank you for sending my way, loves. I'm WAY TOO FAR GONE. If La Croix is what does me in, just let me enjoy my remaining days with a few of them. Save yourself.

This is the origin story of Henry’s Child, as told by Andrew Smith and Rich Clinton: Andrew Smith met Rob Wynia at a Dungeons and Dragons game. They bonded over one quoting a Rush lyric and the other finishing it. Yes, the Midi-chlorian was high for both of them. With Andrew’s poetry and Rob’s old P-Bass in hand, they started out to put a band together. With Andy Dent on guitar and Pete Cornett on drums, they were formed as Henry’s Child. Choosing a different direction for the band, they parted ways with their guitar player eventually landing with Ed Cole. Ed (who played on the first “Mr. Bungle” record) couldn’t tour due to family duties, which left them with a really good demo but without a long-term guitar player. After this change, they tried out 27 guitar players (mostly metal guys), eventually meeting Rich Clinton. After moving to Oregon, Rich played in a county cover band and was looking for an original project to join.  He found and answered an ad at Andy’s Music (in Eugene) that was placed by Andrew and Rob. After getting the news that Pete was bowing out of the band, Andrew raced over to Rich’s house to tell him the news. That night Andrew and Rich bonded over a song called “In The Basement”, that Rich had written. This was the first song that Andrew and Rich wrote together and we play a little of this unreleased gem in this Podcast. Without a drummer, the guys met Dann Pacheco and start to play with him. Rob leaves the band to work on what would soon become “Floater”. Faced once again with another space to fill, the guys implored Andrew’s roommate, Kris Holm, to play bass. This incarnation became “Algernon”. After parting ways with Dann, it was Pete Cornett that sat on a doorstep for 20 minutes listening to pounding drums to meet Jeff Reilly, who went on to become the drummer for Rich, Andrew and Kris. This solidified the line-up of Henry’s Child the recorded the demo tape “Drink Me” and the 1995 release “Mumbles and Screams”. So in this episode of 2 Dudes 1 Bass Howard Ulyate and I talk about and play my personal La Bella Olinto P bass. This bass is an incredible 63 P Bass replica handmade by Mas Hino. The Olinto P Bass is named after Olinto Mari, one of the founders of E&O Mari String Co. which eventually became La Bella. This is one of my personal favorite basses. From the La Bella Website: "Each La Bella Bass is individually handcrafted and made to order by master bass builder, Mas Hino. Based out of a NYC's Lower East Side, Hino shapes each body by hand, working with only the finest cuts of wood. The “OLINTO” also sports hand wound pick-ups made in house. Bringing years of experience and knowledge to the table, Hino is able to make La Bella's vision into a reality — a vintage-style bass equally as handcrafted as its vintage-style strings."

Laura Mvula has taken the global pop scene by storm in the last few years, with entrancing melodies, complex African rhythms and cutting edge sonics, it would be a challenge for most bass players to comfortably find their role. Karl Rasheed Abel fulfills the bass duties flawlessly, with a deep understanding of jazz, rnb, neo soul and Afrobeat, Karl manages to not just fill out the bottom end, instead his basslines enhance the music and at times are all that is required to tell the story. It was fantastic to hang with Karl and chat about his influences and approach to playing bass in Laura's band, as well as his time spent in Berklee College of Music and why so many of us end up with a P Bass in our hands. http://www.karlrasheedabel.com/ https://www.facebook.com/lauramvulamusic/

Super excited to get my hands on this awesome instrument. The Olinto P Bass by La Bella is as close to a real 63' Fender P Bass as you can get. Master Luthier, Mas Hino, handbuilds these instruments to 63' P Bass specs, and he nails it. This bass features a relic Alder body (white over sunburst finish), Maple neck, Rosewood fingerboard, a Mas Hino Scatterwound P Bass Pickup, Hipshot reverse tuners, Fender aged bride, and La Bella flat wound strings. This is a great sounding and playing instrument. I recorded the playing examples through my A-Designs Ventura and REDDI, and went directly to Logic Audio through my Apogee Duet. The playing examples are clean bounces with no Plug Ins or effects.

I first started doing home recording in 1992. I had a Fostex X-28h, a Boss DR-550, a guitar and my P-Bass. It was a cassette recorder and was one of the best home units at the time. The recordings were rudimentary at best and rarely had more than 4 tracks. Still, I did a ton of writing and even recorded some other people. 8 years later I upgraded to the boss BR-8. Now I had 8 tracks, built-in drum patterns for roughing out ideas, COSM amp and mic modeling and it was all digital. In just 8 years home recording had changed DRASTICALLY. A year after that I started using my computer to do my recording, and in 2011...I can now record on an iPad. Garage band on the iPad blows me away. It boggles my mind to think that this self contained flat piece of glass and metal has more recording power in it than the Beatles had to record "Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band". And yet here it is. I started my recording endeavor on a cassette tape, and there are no moving parts to be seen and it is a much more graphical interface than I ever had. What I like best about Garage Band for the iPad is that not only is it a great platform for sketching out ideas. It is also an empowering platform. With "Smart Instruments" it gives the beginner a solid starting point. It is nearly impossible to play a wrong note and it teaches chord theory in a round about way. Recently,  I had the opportunity to watch this empowerment first hand. I work with guy named Mike. He does not play any instruments, but he loves music and can sing. I thought Mike would enjoy a program like Garage Band, so I sat down with him, showed him the basics and let him go. In three weeks I watched him go from music enthusiast to music creator. The best part is with each song he writes he learns something and uses the smart instruments less and uses what he has learned from the start instruments and applies it to the other instruments in Garage Band. And that leads me to this episode. In episode 4 we talk with Mike about his transformation into music creator and how the iPad can be a viable tool for all musicians. All the Music in this episode was created by either Mike or Myself and done entirely on the iPad. So sit back and enjoy!
