We discussed the current state of wheat crops in Oklahoma and the exciting new wheat variety, "Orange Blossom," developed by OSU's Wheat Improvement Team. Dr. Carver's insights into wheat breeding and genetics are particularly enlightening, especially regarding the balance between innovation and practical application for farmers.Key TakeawaysOklahoma Crop Conditions: The fluctuating temperatures and moisture levels have created a mixed bag for wheat crops across Oklahoma. Some areas are showing decent growth, while others are struggling due to early freezes. It's crucial for farmers to monitor their fields closely and adjust management practices accordingly to mitigate stress and optimize growth.Introducing "Orange Blossom": Dr. Carver introduced the new wheat variety, "Orange Blossom," which is inspired by the successful "Double Stop" variety. This new variety aims to maintain high yield potential while offering herbicide tolerance, making it a valuable option for farmers seeking improved weed control.Advancements in Wheat Breeding: The use of DNA markers and double haploids has significantly accelerated the wheat breeding process. These techniques allow for more efficient and effective development of new varieties, ensuring that farmers have access to the best possible genetics.Market Potential of Hybrid Wheat: We discussed the potential market for hybrid wheat and the challenges associated with its adoption.Dr. Carver emphasized that significant yield improvements are necessary to encourage farmers to transition from traditional varieties to hybrids, highlighting the importance of economic viability in agricultural innovation.Importance of Certified Seed: The conversation underscored the benefits of using certified seed to ensure genetic purity and maximize yield potential.Investing in certified seed can provide farmers with a reliable source of high-quality genetics, leading to improved crop performance and profitability. Bees and Valencia oranges from my family's farm in rural central Florida provide a snapshot of externalities and transaction costs. A local beekeeper wasn't just a boon for our crops but also an illustration of Arthur Pigou's theories on the divergence between supply price and marginal supply price.  Real-world practices, such as apple orchard owners paying for pollination services while beekeepers pay for the privilege of orange blossom honey, reveal how market dynamics naturally balance costs and benefits. M.C. Wow, we're so lucky. Today on PPM, we're joined by Laihall, who is running point on this charge into the windswept Manitoban past, as we unpack the equal parts remarkable, tragic, & hopeful history of the visionary poet & indigenous resistance leader Louis Riel, organizer of the Red River Rebellion & a primary player in the North West Rebellion after it. In this first part, we lay some of the necessary groundwork in preparation for weaving this multi-decade saga of righteous armed resistance against Anglo-Canadian settler colonialism. We discuss the forces of capitalist extraction; the paramilitaries such as the Orange Order that have so often served as the imperial pawns on the frontier, linking the power structure of the colonial system; the secret societies such as freemasonry which are a hierarchically a step above & which manipulate groups like the Orangemen as their farm leagues or feeder schools... To synopsize, we learn about Métis culture & life ways; Laihall teaches us about the ethnogenerative process that gave rise to the rich & wholly unique Métis ethnicity & culture, formed from the unions of Cree, Ojibwe, & Algonquian women and French, Anglo, & Scottish fur traders; we talk French voyageurs; we learn about how Métis men frequently contracted with the Hudson's Bay Company or American competitors as fur trappers, connecting this investigation to our "Fur Connection" series; we learn how Louis Riel, Sr. opposed the HBC's monopoly in Rupert's Land—or to be even more accurate, that he brought about the monopoly's death knells through his savvy organizing & legal advocacy, an economic history that prefigures his son's rebellious organizing; we learn about Louis's early life; his vast family; some of Laihall's Métis lineage & his unique vantage point into this saga; we talk about Louis Riel the volcel seminarian; we begin to assemble the array of adversarial forces that would attempt to quash the Métis self-determination (and, if need be, annexation to America) movement; this brings into view some of our primary villains, such as Canada's first prime minister John MacDonald, who facilitated the purchase of Rupert's Land (what would become the Northwest Territory) from the HBC & who set in motion the involuntary surveys of Métis land that served as a flashpoint; we introduce John Christian Schultz, the founder of the Canada First movement & party, who sought to create a Nazi-esque, Anglo majority, frostbitten nation on the high plains and who founded the very first Masonic lodge in the NW; we talk about his crony, Thomas Scott, the Ichabod Crane looking m'fer & Orangeman (meaning a member of the Protestant & Northern Irish paramilitary that served as a cudgel for British imperialism); and we conclude Pt. I of our Riel narrative w/ the surveyors who have been sent to annex & prepare the way for the displacement of Métis peoples on behalf of their Anglo-Canadian overlords getting run off... And then, before we sign off, we enjoy a brief coda where we tie in Laihall's Qs & Clues prompt and pose a challenge to all ParaPower Mappers who will heed the call: to aid us in a mapping of the sus Surrealist networks that included figures like Andre Breton & various Canadian "Indian agents" who misappropriated sacred Coast Salish regalia intended for potlatch ceremonies. This leads us to an extended riff on "Gollum Klonny" & the dangers of parapolitical "nugget" covetousness. ADDITIONAL HISTORY: Headlines You Probably Missed

Sometimes the historical moments I share on this podcast are great moments in history, sometimes they're shocking moments, and sometimes they're sad. Today's episode falls under that last category. On February 20, 1942, thousands of people with Japanese ancestry, including U.S. citizens, were rounded up and sent to Japanese internment camps. They were treated like criminals and forced to live in poor conditions. It was a terrible time in history for sure. We had a great conversation with Country artist Joedi Silvers on The Chris & Sandy Show. We talked about many things from Nashville, music, sacrifices, he told some really great stories to a whole lot more!Joedi Silvers came by his classic country sound honestly. His father lived it, performing in Nashville and all over the world in the 70's and 80's. Joe Don Silvers was a hitmaker. He wrote for Barbara Mandrell, Charley Pride, Janie Fricke, Lois Johnson and Willie Nelson, to name a few. He also founded a studio on Music Row with his friend, Faron Young, “The Queen of Sound.” Joe Don toured for decades all over the world. Two of his longest and most notable touring partners were “The Nashville Junction” and Hank Williams, Jr.His young son quickly proved to be a chip off the old block musically. “I started singing at three,” recalls Joedi. “My dad had a studio in our basement, and some of my first musical memories are of joining him in singing ‘Orange Blossom Special' and ‘Folsom Prison Blues' in that basement studio.”As a young boy Joedi was a typical kid, spending his time playing sports and video games. Eventually he pursued his true calling and passion for the traditional country music style of his father. He taught himself to play his dad's guitar, becoming proficient on the instrument and quickly harnessing the retro country sound that comes naturally.Joedi's voice takes you back to a time when artists like Ray Price, Waylon Jennings and Johnny Cash were kings, when steel guitar and analog sound ruled, and music made you feel something in your soul. Joedi hopes to bring back this style, armed with drawers of songs penned by his dad that fit his deep throwback voice and rhinestone-shimmering image perfectly. On a whim he recorded “Sleeping Alone,” a song written by his father, and uploaded it to Instagram. Within a few days, the video had over half a million views, and eventually it exceeded well over 2 million views. With that success under his belt, Joedi set off for Nashville, his dad's old stomping grounds, armed with little more than his sheer talent and a desire to share it with the world. At 19 years old, Joedi Silvers is an old soul who often seems wise beyond his years. He currently hones his talent performing in bars on Broadway, where many of Nashville's biggest artists began their journey to fame. He brings a fresh energy and passion to the original sound that first made Music City great. His is the same honest sound that propelled a generation of artists who are revered a few streets away from Broadway at the Country Music Hall of Fame. Joedi is ready to take his place among pure country greats both past and present.

I do my TrueFire, I do some of their courses. I'm always trying to learn something new. I love it.” - Dale 51:49 “My advice to anybody who wants to do music is to just play and enjoy it. Because even if nobody likes what you're doing, but you like what you're doing, I think you should just play and enjoy the music. Because as we talked earlier, there's so much ego in this business. And as long as you love what you're doing, you believe in what you're doing, I say just play, it doesn't matter if anybody likes it as long as you like it. And if you inspire just one person to play, I mean, it makes it all worth it. So that's me.” - Dale 52:26 “Don't doubt yourself, second guess yourself. Everybody has their own thing. God gave us all different talents and different gifts. So use yours. Don't compare that to anybody else there.” - Lisa Timestamps: 01:59 Introducing Saylor Dollar 03:15 Saylor Dollar talks about Tallahassee, Florida 04:00 Where do Saylor Dollar spend most of their time when going out and doing their performances? 05:25 How do Saylor Dollar put their material together and have their songs come together? 08:57How did Saylor Dollar start collaborating - when and where did they meet? 11:20 Listen to “Colored Water Sunshine” by Saylor Dollar 14:57 Saylor Dollar talks about the story behind “Colored Water Sunshine” 17:04 Sinkholes that you can swim in that are in  Tallahassee, Florida 18:06 Saylor Dollar on their special favorites on alternate tuning and DADGAD tuning. 22:22 Gears and instruments that Saylor Dollar uses when they get out and play. 24:14 Lisa's powerful vocals and who she listened to before she started singing. 25:42 Lisa on joining a bluegrass band. 27:52 What are Saylor Dollar's process for getting ready for when they're going to do a record. 30:36 How does Saylor Dollar put their music together and what great do they use? 32:44 Saylor Dollar about doing a full band and a duo.  33:54 Listen to “Goodbye” by Saylor Dollar 37:58 What is the metaphor behind “Goodbye” and who had the personal experience with this song.  41:12 What does Lisa and Dale like to do for fun outside music and work?  42:44 Where are the best venues for their eclectic music? 46:10 At what age did Dale start playing and who did he listen to growing up? 48:57 When did Dale transition from heavy metal to something different? 50:18 Lisa as a teacher of strings. 51:18 Saylor Dollar's goodbye message to the audience and words of wisdom to the upcoming artists. 53:35 Listen to “Ride On” by James Kevin O'Connor   Spotify Playlist: Did you miss the alumni of the dHarmic Evolution Podcast? Nashville musician Charlie McCoy's Dylan-related achievements include those distinctive guitar licks on Desolation Row, that blues harmonica on Obviously Five Believers (a rare example of another person playing harp on a Dylan session) and the inventive bass lines on John Wesley Harding, Nashville Skyline and Self Portrait. His motto: “Say yes - and then figure it out!” On his work as a session musician: “The song is the picture and we are the frame”. On Dylan's harmonica style: “I've tried to do it like that and it doesn't sound as good”. On waiting until 4:00 in the morning to record Sad-Eyed Lady of the Lowlands: “How much coffee can you drink?”Charlie has played with them all: Elvis (13 albums), Jerry Lee Lewis, Roy Orbison, George Jones, Dolly Parton, Johnny Cash, Ringo Starr, Paul Simon, Kris Kristofferson, Robbie Robertson, Linda Ronstadt; even the rockers known as Ween. His tale of Leonard Cohen and the horsewhip is worth the price of admission. Any regrets? “I never played bass for Elvis” (only harmonica, organ, vibes and guitar). We are honoured to welcome the Nashville cat who has been there and done pretty much everything. In addition to being a fixture in Nashville recording studios for almost 60 years, Charlie McCoy has released 35 solo albums and served as music director for the long-running television series, “Hee Haw”. Charlie is member of the Country Music Hall of Fame. His session work includes Oh Pretty Woman by Roy Orbison, Simon and Garfunkel's The Boxer, George Jones's He Stopped Loving Her Today and Johnny Cash's Orange Blossom Special. He has played harmonica for Waylon Jennings, Steve Miller, Gordon Lightfoot, Loretta Lynn, Leon Russell, Rodney Crowell and countless others. Charlie won a Grammy for his album, The Real McCoy. He has won the CMA's Instrumentalist of the Year Award two times and the Academy Of Country Music's Specialty Instrument Award seven times. Elton John [00:32] "Honky Cat" Greatest Hits MCA Records MCA-3007 1974 (1980 reissue) Funky feline fun! Loretta Lynn [05:46] "Wine Women and Song" Greatest Hits MCA Records MCA-1 1968 (1973 reissue) Loretta's 3rd top ten single on Decca, reaching number 3 on the country charts in 1964. Dawn [07:48] "Candida" Greatest Hits Arista AL-4045 1975 This first outing from Tony Orlando and Dawn reached number 3 on the Hot 100 in 1970. Webb Pierce [10:53] "I Ain't Never" Greatest Hits MCA Records MCA-120 1968 Legend has it that Mel Tillis traded crediting Webb as a co-writer on this number for a pair of boots that Pierce was wearing at the time. Webb's 1959 version made it to number 2 on the country charts. In 1972, Tillis' version (https://youtu.be/S8npzNIbF14) made it to number 1. Diana Ross [14:32] "Upside Down" All the Greatest Hits Motown M13-960C2 1981 A great tune penned for Ms. Ross by Chic's Nile Rodgers and Bernard Edwards. Made it to number 1 on the charts of course. I dig the guitar work on the outro. Sly & the Family Stone [18:38] "Sing a Simple Song" Greatest Hits Epic KE 30325 1970 The b-side from the all killer no filler 1968 Sly single "Everyday People". War [22:35] "The Cisco Kid" Greatest Hits United Artists Records UA-LA648-G 1976 One of my favorite songs when I was a kid, and I still love it. Definitely an irresistable hook. Made it all the way up to number 2 on the Hot 100, but was held out of the number one spot by... Tony Orlando & Dawn's "Tie a Yellow Ribbon Round the Ole Oak Tree". Willie Nelson [26:20] "Good Hearted Woman" Greatest Hits (& Some that Will Be) Columbia KC2 37542 1981 Waylon Jennings wrote this inspired by a newspaper piece about Tina Turner's relationship with Ike. Purportedly written by Jennings and Nelson over a poker game. Jenning's version is quite excellent (https://youtu.be/bU7hic-KtVw). Petula Clark [30:37] "Call Me" Greatest Hits, Vol. 1 Warner Bros - Seven Arts Records WS1765 1968 Pretty snappy for what would become an Easy Listening standard. ABBA [33:24] "The Name of the Game" Greatest Hits, Vol 2 Atlantic SD 16009 1979 Not sure why I like the more dramatic ABBA songs like this (https://youtu.be/iJ90ZqH0PWI) and "Knowing Me, Knowing You (https://youtu.be/iUrzicaiRLU)", but I do. This one made it to number 12 on the Hot 100. The bass intro was inspired Stevie Wonder's "I Wish" (https://youtu.be/c7IYSAUj78g). Conway Twitty [38:13] "Hello Darlin'" Greatest Hits Vol. I MCA Records MCA-52 1972 (1973 reissue) Long associated with Conway Twitty, this single stayed at the top of the country charts for four weeks in the summer of 1970. Bob Dylan [40:38] "Tonight I'll Be Staying Here with You" Greatest Hits Volume II Columbia KG 31120 1971 The third single released from his 1969 album Nashville Skyline. Some pretty hot guitar licks. Elton John [45:57] "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds" Greatest Hits Volume II MCA Records MCA-3027 1977 Released in 1974 and topping the pop charts in January of 1975, this Beatles cover features John Lennon himself joining in on guitar and backing vox under the pseudonym Winston O'Boogie. I am pretty sure was the first version I heard as a kid, thanks to pop radio. Definitely recall the Univibe guitar opening and the synth lead in the middle, and the odd but awesome reggae break. Marty Robbins [51:47] "El Paso" The Greatest Hits Columbia C2X-3 Please enjoy this Dudley (aka H.B. Barnum) spoof (https://youtu.be/-EVP_ISgPNk) of this 1959 song. Johnny Cash [56:27] "It Ain't Me, Babe" Greatest Hits Volume 1 Columbia CL 2678 1967 Great admirers of each other, Cash recorded this Dylan song for his 1965 Orange Blossom Special with June Carter helping out on vocals. Their single made it to number 4 in the country charts. Trini Lopez [59:29] "La Bamba" Greatest Hits! Reprise Records R 6226 1966 A live version from 1963 of this traditional Mexican folk song, non-traditionally credited to Lopez which would normally be credited as traditional. Perhaps it's due to Lopez's Beatles-esque break in the middle of the arrangement. Music behind the DJ: "Theme from a Summer Place" by Percy Faith & his Orchestra

He managed the Lone Star Cafe and Blue Note Jazz Club in New York, and traveled the world with Kinky Friedman.Greezy Wheels is an Austin, Texas-based rock/alternative/Americana band that formed in the 1970s. They played more frequently at the Armadillo World Headquarters than any other band in the history of the venue. They are regarded as the Armadillo house band and are elected members of the Austin Music Hall Of Fame.Greezy Wheels' music is a raucous blend of rock, funk, R&B, alt-country, and Ozarks. In their early days, they were the only band with a female fiddler, Sweet Mary Hattersley. Sweet Mary consistently brought the crowd to a screaming frenzy with her version of the "Orange Blossom Special." The music of Greezy Wheels reflected the cultural dichotomy of Austin in the 1970s — a unique place where hippies had roots deep in the heart of Texas. Greezy Wheels opened Willie Nelson's first ever Armadillo World Headquarters show, putting him in front of the hippies who then adopted him and have been his fans ever since. They have shared the stage with (literally) too many greats to name. The band played up to 1978, when they took a 23-year hiatus. Greezy Wheels reformed in 2001 and are now recording for their own label, MaHatMa Records, after releasing two CDs on the Tana Records label. Musical talent runs through the family of Jan Jae. Her parents studied at the famed Juilliard School of Music in New York, and Jana was introduced to the classical study of the violin, on an eighth-size instrument, at the age of two. Then, thanks to the direction and inspiration of her grandfather–an accomplished champion fiddler in his own right–Jana also learned to love playing by ear. She honed her skill of fiddling into a fine art and won the Ladies National Championship several times. She also continued her classical training, winning scholarships to Interlochen and the International String Congress. She graduated Magna Cum Laude with a degree in music and studied abroad at the Vienna Academy of Music.Jana got her big break at a Buck Owens concert in Redding, California when she was invited to play “Orange Blossom Special.” Buck offered her a job as the first female member of his Buckaroos band. She later became part of the regular team of performers on the television show Hee Haw.

The world tends to look at accomplishments in the form of accolades and although only in his mid-30’s, Michael Cleveland has plenty to his credit. After picking up the fiddle at age 4, Michael’s musical momentum began to propel him forward towards early success. “When I started taking lessons at age 4,” he remembers, “I told the teacher right up front that I wanted to learn how to play bluegrass and I wanted to play ‘Orange Blossom Special.'” Reluctant as they were, his teachers quickly found a reason to his rhyme, helping him progress to the point when, at age 9, Michael was invited to sit in with the legendary Bill Monroe at the Bean Blossom Bluegrass Festival. Soon after, he was hand-picked for the International Bluegrass Music Association’s (IBMA) Bluegrass Youth Allstars which led to an invitation by Alison Krauss to bring his virtuosic style to the Grand Ole Opry, all before he was 14 years old. His blistering prowess and technical fluency have since marked him as a sought-after musician, leading to performances with Vince Gill, Marty Stuart, Tim O’Brien, J.D. Crowe and the New South, Andy Statman, and The Kruger Brothers in recent years. However, it wasn’t until 2006, when Michael formed his own band Michael Cleveland & Flamekeeper, that he found the right vehicle for his musical vision, and he hasn’t rested since constantly looking for new ways to push himself and his music forward. “He plays fearless and it’s intoxicating to play with him because he makes you play fearless,” says Country Music Hall of Famer Vince Gill. “He takes no prisoners but he plays with a restraint and a soul. He plays without abandon.” Clearly, the IBMA agrees as he’s their most awarded Fiddle Player of the Year with 10 wins, has won Instrumental Recorded Performance of the Year six times, and fronts their 5-Time Instrumental Group of the Year. Together with Flamekeeper members Josh Richards (guitar), Nathan Livers (mandolin), Jasiah Shrode (banjo) and Tyler Griffith (bass), Cleveland makes his way around the country performing festivals, clubs, and performing arts centers, delighting audiences, leaving them with jaws dropped in complete amazement.“It’s wicked to see how much music he pulls out of a bow,” continues Vince. “He’s untouchable.” Michael Cleveland was inducted into the National Fiddler Hall of Fame in 2018.

Michael Cleveland was born blind but he fell in love with the violin as a young child when he heard a recording of the fiddle tune Orange Blossom Special. “I want to play that,” he told himself and, with the help of his parents and teachers at a school for the blind, that’s exactly what he did, and a whole bunch of other tunes as well. Named fiddler of the year six times in a row by the International Bluegrass Music Association, Michael performs with his group Flamekeeper. But it's not just about wedding rings. My Irish Jeweler has a great range of Celtic Cross Pendants, Claddagh Jewelry and other super gift ideas. Always made in Ireland. Always free shipping. My Irish Jeweler is offering a 10% discount to listeners of this podcast. Just follow the link in the shownotes. If you have any trouble with your discount, or any questions about Celtic Jewelry, just drop Peter an email. That's what I did. His service and communication is outstanding. So, go to MyIrishJeweler.com/celticmusic and get your 10% discount. This offer is valid until July 31st.   Notes: Thanks to the Patrons of the Podcast. DAVID BROZA is an Israeli superstar that has been considered one of the most dynamic and vibrant performers in the singer/songwriter world. His charismatic and energetic performances have brought to worldwide audiences, a fusion of the three different countries in which he was raised: Israel, Spain, and England, filling concert halls with his famous guitar playing, ranging from flamenco flavored rhythmic and percussion techniques, to whirlwind finger picking, to a signature rock and roll sound. More than a singer/songwriter, David is also well known for his commitment and dedication to several humanitarian causes, predominantly, the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. David recorded his new album 'East Jerusalem / West Jerusalem' with Palestinian and Israeli musicians in East Jerusalem, the Palestinian part of that holy city. The album was produced by multiple Grammy nominee Steve Earle and features performances by Earle and Wyclef Jean. http://www.davidbroza.net MIKE STEVENS and OKAIDJA AFROSO are two passionate musicians from very different backgrounds. Mike is an award winning harmonica virtuoso from Canada and Okaidja is a a traditional master musician and dancer from Ghana. The two bring their talents together on the stunning album 'CanadAfrica'. Here you will encounter the essence of Ghanas Gold Coast intertwined with the deep roots of Folk and Blues music of North America. This innovative record reveals how beautifully the sounds of the harmonica complements Ghanaian melodies powered by these two master musicians. The last time Mike appeared on WoodSongs, he and Raymond McLain brought the house down with their version of the "Orange Blossom Special". It stands as one of the all time great performance on the show. Raymond will be making a special guest appearance on the broadcast with Mike and Okaidja so put on your seat belts! http://www.mikestevensmusic.com/
