We can agree that Jerry Garcia's playing pulled from all directions of the American musical experience to create an unparalleled playing vocabulary that persisted not only at the forefront of the Grateful Dead's music, where he was most prominent, but also in his solo work with Jerry Garcia Band and in his bluegrass collaborations. Throughout the Dead's rambling career, the band shapeshifted through various eras, often with very different musical values, giving fan lots to disagree about. What's the essential stuff? Where should new listeners go to get acquainted before going into live-tape-land? And just how influential were the Dead on modern music?Episode sponsored by Epiphone: https://www.epiphone.com/en-US/page/Inspired-by-Custom-Shop?utm_source=premier_guitar&utm_medium=video&utm_campaign=fy25_epiphone&utm_content=epiphone_custom_shopFollow Nick: https://www.instagram.com/nickmillevoiFollow Jason: https://www.instagram.com/jasonshadrickGet at us: 100guitarists@premierguitar.comCall/Text: 319-423-9734Podcast powered by Sweetwater. The Bill Crook-built Paisley seemed like the appropriate candidate, so I set up a time for an install, and Joe agreed to the entire process being filmed. Besides me removing the strings, and Joe removing the neck, this is the entire installation process from beginning to end. I hope through watching this you can see what would be involved in having one installed in your guitar, but more than that, I hope you can see both the brilliance of Glaser's design and how ingenious his installation procedure is. The reason for the new bender mechanism being so streamlined was that Joe had to develop a bender mechanism and installation procedures that could be used by large guitar manufacturers. This is the same mechanism that is installed by Fender USA into the Brent Mason Signature model, and by Fender's Custom Shop into some of their high-end models.Joe also shows how he strings vintage-style tuners and locks the plain strings for greater tuning stability.Gear Used:2014 Crook Custom Vintage Paisley APC Adder (Neck) Peter Florance TE-60 (Bridge)http://www.crookcustomguitars.com/Pick:Danocaster MediumAmp:1964 Vox JMI AC10 with 12" Celestion Blue Alnico Speaker in a custom cab built by Kyle Bollendorf. First Act is a brand that almost nobody associates with a high quality instrument. We are used to seeing them in the Walmart toy section, not in the hands of professional touring musicians. But at some point in the mid-2000s First Act created their own Custom Shop. These instruments went into the hands of some very popular musicians of the era, and are experiencing a serious resurgence all these years later. Kelly Butler was a builder at the Gibson Custom Shop and was instrumental in creating the First Act Custom Shop instruments, and now owns his own brand K. Butler Guitars. I brought him on the podcast to tell the story, and it is an extremely interesting tale! We've got John Mayer, Slash, and even Nigel Tufnel (of Spinal Tap fame) waved into this one. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did! And don't forget, we are giving a Gibson SG away and there are just a few days left to enter. Head over to Stringjoy.com to check that out. Isaac Smith is becoming one of my favorite people. The guy is always happy, always thinking, and always trying to do better. When he saw the need for better hunting arrows, he went to work! Now he and the folks at Vector Custom Shop have developed a hard-hitting, durable, and customizable arrow that is also budget friendly and approachable for every level of hunter. Isaac understands that not everyone wants to bust out the glue and epoxy after they've already paid good money for quality gear. Thats why when you order Vector arrows, you get a premium, fully constructed projectile set direct to your door that'll spin true and tune perfect to your bow. Martin’s Custom Shop is a unique anomaly: Within their large Nazareth, Pennsylvania production facility, a small crew of luthiers builds completely custom, one-off guitars for discerning customers around the world. From personalized inlays and wood choices to double-neck Martins (!!), nothing seems off-the-table. On this week’s podcast, we bring back one of our favorite guests, Fred Greene (Vice President of Product Management for C.F. Martin & Co.), to talk about the Custom Shop, the ordering process and what Martin will (and won’t) build. We also have a candid talk about how the COVID-19 pandemic has affected Martin’s 2020 output and get some hints at what new products they’ll be unveiling at the virtual 2021 NAMM Show.
