Five female filmmakers from the Chagrin Documentary Film Festival joined us for a panel discussion about a common thread in each of their films: agency. We talk about the control the people in their stories had over their lives and their bodies -- and the consequences when that control falls into someone else's hands. We also dug deep into how this manifests itself in the film industry and what these women are doing to change it "so that documentary filmmakers can tell the stories that need to be told. They don't have to only get the stories made that somebody else sees value in. Or that a corporation sees value in. Or that the person with enough money to fund it sees value in. There are other ways than just how the machine works right now." (00:32) Meet the panel! (02:29) Recapping the stories told by each film and how they show contrasting levels of agency (07:43) Advocating for the value of our time and what we're worth (15:44) Stephanie talks about why she started her business to fund documentary filmmakers, which got the wheels turning for an incredible discussion about filmmaker empowerment Thank you to these amazing women for being a part of the panel! Kelley Wolf Griffith, Director: Junk Genius. Damon Drummond takes the ”junk” from scrap yards and transforms them into art. Also mentioned on this episode: Producer: Let's Talk About Death (podcast). Twin brothers -- one is a funeral director, one is a grieving psychologist. They fearlessly tackle a subject often considered taboo: Death. Producer: Yooper Wisdom (podcast). An inspiring wellness podcast about a resident of the remote Upper Peninsula of Michigan, where locals are commonly referred to as "Yoopers," as she explores inner healing and self-love. Companion to the film of the same name showing at the Fresh Coast Film Festival Meg Vogel, Director: Taken: An American Hostage Story. Mark McAlister and John Hamen III had just landed in Yemen. They'd both been hired to renovate a hotel for the U.S. State Department in the Middle East. Amid a brutal civil war, they soon became bargaining chips. This is a story of what happens when one's worst nightmare becomes national news – after the spotlight fades, but the suffering doesn't. This is a story about the hidden cost of war. Stephanie Dattilo, Executive Producer for Williams & Mansell: Red 5. Nigel Mansell is recognized as one of the greatest race car drivers of all time, but how did he get there? He struggled through race after race, coming just short of winning, but he didn't let that stop him. WILLIAMS & MANSELL: RED 5 tells the story of how he made it to the World Formula 1 Drivers' Championship, using not only his driving skills, but his engineering background and the help of the Williams Engineering F1 team. Also mentioned in this episode: BetaCandy: Stephanie is the founder and CEO of this creative studio that partners with forward-thinking companies to develop engaging experiences that resonate with audiences and real people, not just algorithms. Endora Media: Stephanie is also the founder and CEO of this advisory firm that connects capital with creative opportunities. They source purpose-driven content that specializes in content-producing ventures that seek to harness the power of the female voice. A'magine Nation, Director/Producer and Renee Bergan, Co-Producer/Editor: At Your Cervix. We are taught to trust medical experts to provide the best care and to honor our right to consent. But what if you discovered that medical students had used your body to practice a pelvic exam without consent? It has only been recently discovered that this practice has been going on for years. This eye-opening film takes us into hospitals and classrooms with the experiences of both victims and students and highlights the need for accountability within the medical community. The on-demand catalog of films featured at the festival is available through October 16, 2023.

Shipwrecked and Rescued Larry Jorgensen https://shipwreckedandrescued.com/ ()Growing up in the 1970's in Marysville, Michigan, I used to watch the lake freighters travel up and down the St. Clair River all of the time. I remember one of the most fascinating ships to spot was the “Edmund Fitzgerald” at over 1000 feet in length.  It was immortalized by the song, “The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald” written by Gordon Lightfoot, after it encountered a severe Lake Superior winter storm in November 1975. My own personal experience of how fast a storm can roll in from Lake Superior occurred Mothers Day in 1973. Our family drove almost 12 hours up to property we owned on Lake Bailey in the Keweenaw Peninsula. It was spring and the weather was beautiful. But we awoke the next morning to two feet of snow and bitter cold! And NOBODY had cold weather clothing!  We were wearing shorts, T-shirts and flip flops!  Needless to say, we loaded up the car and headed home! I'm saying all this because our guest today has written a book titled, https://shipwreckedandrescued.com (“Shipwrecked and Rescued, Cars and Crew.”) It is about a famous event in Michigan history. A story of another shipping disaster on Lake Superior. Just so  you know, there have been over 10,000 ship wrecks in the Great Lakes, about 500 or more in Lake Superior and many of them still remain undiscovered due to the depth of the Lake. Buthttps://shipwreckedandrescued.com ( “Shipwrecked and Rescued, Cars and Crew”)  is about a wreck that had a good ending. A rescue. Not just a rescue of the crew, but also the cargo. A tragedy that turned to victory. But it was not an easy feat to achieve. Larry Jorgensen has been fascinated by the wreck of the ship called, “The City of Bangor.” This was not just a ship wreck. This was a double rescue success!  What is a double rescue success? Well, instead of me telling you about it, let's welcome to the program historian and author, Larry Jorgensen! Larry, thank you for taking the time to join us today! Larry, let's jump into the book. What first caught your attention about the wreck of the “City of  Bangor” and why? This wreck occurred before there was, truly, any significant use of radio, radar and things like that which we take for granted today, correct? Tell us about this wreck and what made the rescue so difficult and, at the same time, so significant… The crew was taken in by a generous family that took care of them during the winter. A local businessman, basically, “invented” the snowmobile” and it was successfully used in the rescue? Once the crew was safe, then came the second part of the rescue, correct? Tell us about that aspect of the rescue? It took the highway department three weeks to plow the road 40 miles to get the cars back from Copper Harbor. I just have to ask, do you speak “Yoopernese?” For those that don't understand, “Yoopernese” is the dialect, accent or whatever you want to call of northern Michiganders. It sounds something like, “yah, you dalk like dis when you live der, eh?” Growing up in the thumb area of Michigan, I was referred to as a “Troll” (that's what Yoopers call people from the lower peninsula because we live “under the bridge” – referring to, of course, the Mackinaw Bridge). Anyway, I could talk for hours about the UP (for those that don't know, that means the “Upper Peninsula”). Larry, this is awesome. I truly appreciate you sharing this story with us. How can someone obtain their own copy of https://shipwreckedandrescued.com (“Shipwrecked and Rescued, Cars and Crew?”)  Is it on Amazon? If someone wanted to get in touch with you, maybe to ask a question or do an interview such as this, how can they do that? How can someone get in touch with you? I'll put links to all of this down in the show notes below. CONTACT INFORMATION: https://shipwreckedandrescued.com/ ()   Website:  https://shipwreckedandrescued.com/...

Victor Volkman is the publisher of the U.P. Reader, senior editor at Modern History Press based in Ann Arbor, and president of the Upper Peninsula Publishers and Authors Association. The U.P. Reader is the brainchild of author Mikel Classen. Volkman said he can't be a Yooper because Yoopers are born, not made. The hefty publication features thirty to 50 contributing writers, most are members of the UPPAA. "People who live in the U.P are great writers, the U.P. Reader exposes their writings for other people to explore," said Volkman. Volkman said he's especially proud of the inclusion of Cottage Dandelion winners, young writers who receive a traveling trophy for their school, kind of like the Stanley Cup. "We're making the next generation of writers," he said. "We provide training wheels for young writers. We're able to accept 90 percent of writing." The all-inclusive publication, which is distributed to all the libraries in the U.P.,  features contemporary fiction, short stories, humor, history, memoir, poetry, and much more. "I am a publisher, and this helped me build a relationship with writers," he said. "We work hard to keep the price reasonable." Some of the highlights of the UPPAA are the spring conference in Marquette in June and the picnic on the first Saturday after Labor Day in Marquette. Submissions for the U.P. Reader Volume 7 will be accepted until November. "It's a lot of fun," he said. "I love the sense of community in the U.P." The Upper Peninsula of Michigan is commonly called The U.P., or The Yoop, and those who live there, Yoopers. Any Michigander who lives below The Mackinac Bridge is a Troll or a Flatlander. All other tourists are Fudgies. Try not to be offended. Yooperland is a unique culture with its own deities, a place where terms of enchantment if not endearment are toll for the Big Mac. Last December, at Gulf Shores State Park, Jim gave me The Yoop for Christmas. He presented it in a mapped route – our 2021 adventure – from Alabama to Christmas, a small town on Lake Superior. Since childhood, Longfellow's Song of Hiawatha has captured my imagination. For decades, I have longed to see The Shores of Gitchee Gumee, and I would remain patient. We're talking weird Michigan trivia with Bill, and the conversation includes the invention of breakfast cereal (all thanks to Cornelius the Corn Flakes rooster), fun with soda (or "pop," as the locals call it), Yoopers vs. Trolls, a post office that floats, painted turtles, angry dentists, Freaks and Geeks, Dave Coulier, and lots more Upper Midwest silliness. Blasted Bill is largely responsible for The Flopcast even existing (though he's understandably reluctant to admit it), so we're happy he could join us and help Michiganify the show. (Here's one more fun fact just for you: Michigan is not actually the most mitten-shaped state. That honor goes to Wyoming. Assuming you have freakish rectangle-hands. And we think you do.) A chat with Mary McGowan — the Rebel Without a Car. She's a Delaware native now in South Carolina who went from a car-free bike commuter to bike tourist and has discovered a ton of adventure along the way. Upcoming Bikey Events Follow the Underground Railroad Ride... I'm in touch with the folks behind it and trying to get them on the show, but they are just about ready to roll so we might be checking in down the line. Do follow them on instagram for this ride of activism, adventure, protest, resistance and hope... We load a lot of things into that hope bucket for Black Americans these days, but one of those things for me is to see more representation in adventure cycling so I want to make sure you all are aware of this. Support the ride and check out the teaser video.   The Interview Mary McGowan is the Rebel Without a Car. She's a Delaware native now in South Carolina who went from bike commuter to bike tourist and has discovered a ton of adventure along the way.    Quick sidebar... our audio gets a little garbled here and there but it's a really fun conversation so stick with it and you'll be rewarded like one of those long climbs that pay off with a view at the end. Check Mary out on Insta too.   You're the Rebel Without a Car, which speaks to so many of us (even those of us who sheepishly have access to a vehicle). Do you feel like the Rebel Alliance is making some inroads on the Empire car culture?   What got you started in bike touring?   You've done some pretty great tours I'm jealous of. What was your favorite part about touring in Canada and is poutine in the top 5?   Your ACA North Lakes tour looked really interesting - my family on my mom's side is from Michigan but despite that I never got to the Upper Peninsula yet. What's it like cycling amongst the Yoopers?   Your most recent ride was up in Vermont, featuring our 2020 sidekick COVID. How did COVID impact your ride?

Episode Notes.  Jake Shields served in the Army for several years as a Military Policeman and deployed to Iraq during his tour of duty in the Army.    Jacob Shields had to overcome a lot to serve his country.  In his first attempt to join the Army he was sent home and discharged due to a serious injury, but like most UPers he has a very strong will power, character to fight back and move forward to not let his dream escape.  He wanted no regrets in his life. As a patriot he had a very strong resolve to serve his country while he was still a young man and to play his role in defending our nation.  Check out the author The author we talked about Art Combs, I checked on Amazon he has two books he published both can be found on Amazon in all flavors, hard back, audible and kindle.  Arthur F Coombs - Leadership Books They are “Don’t Just Manage Lead”, Human Connection how the L do we do that. I am an avid reader of Human Nature and also leadership books, so they are on my short list to read before the end of the year. Local Library:  You should also go check out your local library as they may have all 3 versions.  It is always my first stop when looking for a book to read.
