It was such a pleasure to sit down with James Genus while he was in town playing with jazz icon Herbie Hancock. Genus' has had an incredible career not only as a first call sideman for the likes of Branford Marsalis, Roy Haynes, Bob James and Chick Corea, but he has held the bass chair at Saturday Night Live (SNL) for nearly 25 years and played on one of the biggest pop albums of the 2000s - Random Access Memories. We get into detail about all of this and more (including THAT story about his stolen Fodera near the end of the interview) so make sure you grab some snacks or drinks and settle in for a great conversation with a modern day bass legend: James Genus Links: INSTA: https://www.instagram.com/basslessonsmelbourne/ MY MUSIC https://open.spotify.com/artist/3DPXwb75biH3nUBuAULz0y FACEBOOK http://www.facebook.com/bassguitarlessonsmelbourne WEBSITE http://www.basslessonsmelbourne.com
We are beyond thrilled to be joined by Julie Fodera, who, alongside her husband Vincent, is in the process of restoring the magnificent Heatherbrae—one of Victoria's most treasured heritage homes.Located in Caulfield and dating back to 1854, Heatherbrae is steeped in history. In this episode, Julie takes us on a journey through her inspiring vision for restoring this iconic property and shares her personal experiences in the world of historical restoration. We dive deep into the importance of preserving Melbourne's rich history and the significant process of bringing such a storied past back to life. When complete, Heatherbrae will beautifully blend its historical charm with modern comforts, serving as a true celebration of heritage, community, and the arts. Beyond being a private residence, Julie and her team have founded Heatherbrae1854 Pty Ltd, which will seek opportunities to raise funds for local non-profit organizations dedicated to historical preservation, through affiliate marketing and other exciting initiatives. In addition to becoming a private home, Heatherbrae will be transformed into a living gallery for artists, designers, and makers. Its stunning grounds, featuring a majestic Moreton Bay Fig (believed to be the largest of its kind in Victoria), will also serve as a coveted venue for curated events. The landscape will be brought to life with feature gardens, enchanting pathways, and ambient lighting. At the heart of it all, Heatherbrae and the Fodera family aim to inspire the broader community to make thoughtful choices about preserving heritage homes and keeping the stories of our shared history alive.

Jonathan Fodera is a experienced consultant with a demonstrated history of working in the financial services industry.00:00 Intro11:32 Business owners sometimes take out loans for equipment they cannot afford but banks approve them due to their business model or greed, and it eventually puts them out of business.21:10 Jonathan explains the credit card spiral and how dangerous it is to only pay the minimum balance.33:31 The initial point of Bitcoin was to create a more secure currency that would, for the most part, grow in value and you needed to earn.43:48 “Cut out shit that you don't need that is not producing a positive return, and monitor it at the end of every month.”54:20 In January of 2023, more people missed their car payments than they did in 2008, the last significant recession.01:06:05 Jonathan's advice: Keep everything documented. Keep track of data and numbers. Write down your questions and discover answers. Shadow someone who is really good at what they do to learn.01:19:09 A lot of banks use algorithms which “prophet first” will throw off, meaning every dollar that comes in gets divided throughout all your accounts: payroll, expenses, etc.01:31:56 Use your profit revenue wisely. Instead of a luxury purchase, put your money into something that will have a lucrative return, as in client appreciation or team building.01:42:52 “Bill Gates is probably one of the most evil people walking this earth, but he built microsoft.”01:53:52 Follow Jonathan on facebook and other socials, tune into Financial Fitness Fridays and Mindset Mondays.

“Would I prefer cash through debt, or cash through equity?I would always choose cash through debt - what happens in partnerships is one person always works harder, and there is always some level of resentment towards the other ones; you could always find a coach, you could always find a consultant or a mentor. And typically, you're going to have a lot fewer challenges.”There's good debt and bad debt. Essentially, debt is good when it is funding the purchase, today, of an asset that will create value in the future. This is why, in the consumer lending world, mortgage debt is typically good and credit card debt is, well, less commonly so. There are so ways in which we, as consumers, can be tempted into using debt to purchase consumables. But in the business lending world, that ratio skews more towards the good debt side of the equation, because there are so many more value-generating assets to consider - does the business need a new building, or a new machine, or to hire a team to break into a new region.Unfortunately, the business lending world can also be overwhelmingly confusing for small business owners. Jonathan Fodera, president at Integrated Business Financing, is here today to help me get my head around the options. Jonathan helps businesses of all sizes grow and scale by finding the best financing solution possible, from SBA loans to equipment financing to working capital lines to invoice factoring to startup loans and more. You can find Jonathan over on LinkedIn https://www.linkedin.com/in/jonathan-fodera-391a98a1/ (or using jonathan.fodera on the other platforms)Integrated Business Financing is there, too, but there home page is over here: https://www.integratedbusinessfinancing.com/ for a more direct route to the info you're afterThey also have a YouTube channel if videos are more your thing https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCv9gp1n6t2lmyVicsTXZYeQFor my stuff, visit me on my LinkedIn page (feel free to connect), while my action-adventure novels are on Amazon, some versions even for free, and my work with ConfirmU and our gamified psychometric scores is at https://confirmu.com/ and on episode 24 of this very show https://www.howtolendmoneytostrangers.show/episodes/episode-24If you have any feedback or questions, if you would like to participate in the show, or if you'd like to find full written transcripts with timestamps head on over to HowtoLendMoneytoStrangers.ShowOh, and since you like banking podcasts, head on over to https://blog.feedspot.com/banking_podcasts/ to find related content that you may find interesting.
