Dr Patrick Hart: Just Stop Oil petrol station sabotage court case - From the archives

From the archives - an updateToday we bring you an episode from the archives with Dr Patrick Hart. Patrick took action in August 2022 to demand an end to new licences and consents for oil and gas projects in the UK, something which has subsequently become government policy. He disabled petrol pumps at an Esso garage on the M25 on the 24th August 2022.On August 24, 2022, he disabled petrol pumps at an Esso garage near the M25. He was found guilty of Criminal Damage in October 2024 and appeared before Judge Mills at Chelmsford Crown Court on January 7 of this year.Dr. Hart has already been fined in civil court for this action, as the Thurrock Esso petrol station is subject to a private injunction. He has also been referred for a disciplinary hearing by the General Medical Council (GMC) and will face a tribunal. In the past 12 months, the GMC has suspended two doctors from the medical register following convictions for non-violent climate protests. Dr. Hart now faces penalties in three separate proceedings for the same incident. Before sentencing Dr Hart said:“Right now, the greatest health threat to all of us is the unfolding climate catastrophe. It is the greatest health threat we have ever faced. All healthcare workers have a responsibility to protect the health of their patients. If we do not stand up to the oil and gas executives who are wreaking havoc on our climate and the politicians who enable them, if we do not end the burning of fossil fuels, then we will have failed as a profession and the health systems that we have developed over centuries will collapse. I will continue to fight against the death sentence of fossil fuels for as long as I have strength in me. I have no greater duty as a doctor at this moment in history.”Original copy:Just Stop Oil protestors have been disrupting business as usual since April 2022. A Daily Mail article called them “a deranged criminal eco-terrorist cult”. But who are the people behind the headlines? Neil sits down with Dr Patrick Hart, a local GP who has been putting his career and liberty on the line through direct action protests, including the smashing and spray painting of a petrol station. Dr Hart believes we have run out of time for purely legal ways of pulling the world back from what the UN has called “the brink of climate catastrophe”. But are these tactics effective? Are protestors losing public sympathy? Does that matter? Listen in for a conversation far and away from the soundbites of Good Morning Britain

This month, Claire and Marjorie examine the letters of Henrietta Liston, a British botanist, world traveller and wife of diplomat Robert Liston. Liston documented her travels with meticulous detail in her journals, letters and personal documents which form part of the Liston archive held at the National Library of Scotland (NLS). Thanks to the NLS, Marjorie has spent time delving into the archive, including exploring her writing about her time in Turkey during the Ottoman Empire and in North America in its infancy as a country, all through the eyes of a wry, learned woman. The Liston Papers are available to explore at the National Library of Scotland. Find out more: https://digital.nls.uk/travels-of-henrietta-liston/ Our thanks to National Library of Scotland exhibit curators, Dora Petherbridge and Patrick Hart for their generosity and assistance. Claire and Marjorie also discuss Heather Yeung's poem, Fable, written in response to her examination of the Liston Archives. A teacher in the School of Humanities at the University of Dundee, Yeung's poetry often examines ecology and culture, making Liston, with her extensive travel and her love of botany, the perfect figure to draw inspiration. Minot, N.D. — Last week the North Dakota Democratic-NPL saw some internecine conflict over their U.S. House candidate, Mark Haugen, who is pro-life and supports the overturn of Roe v. Wade. Patrick Hart, the chairman of the North Dakota Democratic-NPL, joined this episode of Plain Talk to discuss the challenges of managing the disparate points of view in his party. We also spoke about what his party is do to find its way in a state where Republicans are seeing historic levels of dominance, and where he sees some opportunities for Democratic-NPL candidates in the 2022 election and beyond. Also on this episode, Wednesday co-host Chad Oban and I discuss the strategy of Democrats promoting extreme Republican candidates in primaries with the hope of defeating that candidate in the general. Given the fraught times we're living in, should anyone be supporting extremism, even if the calculation is to defeat it? We also discussed Congressman Kelly Armstrong's vote to codify same-sex marriage in federal law, and Attorney General Drew Wrigley's decision not to seek an external investigation of a scandal over deleted email accounts in his office. Believe it or not, there is such a thing as a pro-life Democrat. There are pro-choice Republicans too, of course, but on this episode of Plain Talk, it was Mark Haugen, the Democratic-NPL candidate for the U.S. House of Representatives, who is staunchly pro-life, who we were speaking to. Haugen's party leaders have described the U.S. Supreme Court decision overturning Roe v. Wade as "evil," but Haugen isn't too worried about that. "Pat's a good friend of mine," he said, referring to party chairman Patrick Hart, and adding that they'd discussed the matter. Still, Haugen feels it's important to remember that pro-life Democrats are a part of the party. "Are we the minority? Absolutely. But that's democracy," he said. "I have to work hard at explaining my position. Haugen describes that position as being "whole life," arguing that Democrats should focus on social assistance policies to help mothers and children. Wednesday co-host Chad Oban and I also discussed the political ramifications of overturning Roe v. Wade, both locally and nationally, as well as the latest revelations of the January 6 committee. Pat was involved with photography in the U.S. space program, including space and lunar photography and film. In retirement, he has developed his talent as a writer and blogger. Regeneration After Addiction is a blog with a world wide audience. Pat writes about his experiences in healing and regenerating throughout the process of addiction and recovery, both for his son in recovery and for himself. In addition to having a son in recovery, Pat has also lost a son to the disease of addiction. One of the most important messages we can take away from this podcast episode: we should tell the addicts in our lives that we love them. We should do this every chance we get.Nar-Anon is an organization for the loved ones of addicts. Pat is an active member. Through his involvement, he has met many new and interesting friends. Their common interests go beyond the topics of addiction. Just as a support system of recovering friends is important for the recovering addict, it is also important for their loved ones to develop a support system. Through Nar-Anon, family members can make new friends and find a new way of life on their journey to a good place.Thank you for listening! If you enjoyed this episode, please let me know.
