With Alex again marooned deep in the English countryside, and Footy on the Med's Menton HQ under attack from all sides, a dread rumour spread around the podcast ecosphere. Would Footy on the Med live to kick a ball again? Fear not! The sea came calling and Alex took himself to the city of Bristol, scene of 727.5 voyages to the Mediterranean in April 1511 alone. QPR, whose blue and white hooped shirts never fail to induce thoughts of the Med, came a-visiting Ashton Gate, home of The Robins, aka Bristol City. Alex was there to chronicle some of the action with the Devizes Hoops, not to mention West Ham Dan and two box-based associates, Scott and Max. Cue an absolute wonder goal from Paul Smyth for The Rs. Bristol City 1 QPR 1 was recorded at Ashton Gate on 14 December 2024.

In this Money Talks segment, Paul Smyth and I kick things off with a look at Sam Bankman-Fried's 25-year sentence before jumping to the brighter side of things with BlackRock's new tokenized money market fund. We then time travel back to 2017 with Copper's sushi party (or so we thought), and close things out by questioning the correlation between fintech funding and the crypto bull run. Paul Smyth is a specialist executive recruiter and executive coach within the fintech industry. As a founder of two startups, Paul also has a unique view of the startup ecosystem. Paul and I met back in 2017 shortly before I photo-bombed his stand at a fintech event in Dublin, and we've collaborated quite a bit since then. He and his business partner and life partner Laura Smyth from Top Tier Recruitment were the original sponsors of MoneyNeverSleeps back in 2018. Since then, Paul has also launched the Possible.ie executive coaching business that counts me as one of their proud customers. I was so happy with the outcome of Paul's coaching of me that I asked him to coach the founders that we bring through the Techstars Web3 accelerator. As one of the many hats he wears, Paul is a fantastic Coach-in-Residence for Techstars, helping startup founders find their way to positive outcomes. In this weeks episode I chat to Paul Smyth who has recently been appointed as head gardener of RHSI Bellefield. Paul originally would have worked in the garden around 10 years ago as part of his college placement with the gardens creator Angela Jupe. Angela became a mentor to Paul over the years and following her passing the house and gardens were left to the RHSI with the long term aim of creating a gardening training / centre of excellence which is now in the early stages of development. What an amazing legacy to leave the Irish Horticultural scene and one which will benefit and inspire gardeners for years to come under the leadership of the RHSI and head gardener Paul. Missed some of your favourite bits during the week? Want to catch up on the craic from Dermot and Dave? Well look no further than the Dermot and Dave Best Of podcast, your home for all of the messing with none of the music! [audio mp3="https://media.radiocms.net/uploads/2022/05/27133746/0517_Final_96.mp3"][/audio] Whether you're on a drive, out on a walk, getting stuck into the gaff or garden or looking for a bit of distraction from work, the Dermot and Dave Best of podcast has just some of our favourite moments from the week gone by! Is there anything better than kicking off your week by hanging out with Diarmuid Gavin…and Diarmuid Gavin? The usual chaos ensued when our favourite gardeners Diarmuid Gavin and Paul Smyth popped by for a chat. What task would you'd be willing to pay any amount of money to get someone else to do? The answer is, according to Dermot and Dave listeners is, ironing. We heard all about the jobs you love to hate! Dermot and Dave nearly came to blows over the name ‘Ger', we heard from a stag who shaved his own eyebrow off and Maria filled us in on what it's like being on a sun holiday when you're super preggo. Plus all your faves from Say Stuff That Suits The Music, to Dave's Bad Jokes and what happened when Noni tried to make her own version of Top Gun called, for now, ‘Top Gowls'. You can catch all the craic by clicking play above.

Diarmuid and Paul joined Dermot and Dave to chat about their new book 'Gardening Together'. As per usual, chaos ensued and our own Diarmuid Gavin was thankfully on hand to answer your questions. You can catch the craic by clicking play above
Garden designer Diarmuid Gavin and horticulturist Paul Smyth join Dearbhail to chat about their nnew partnership struck up under Covid and tips for every month from their new book, 'Gardening Together'.

For insights delivered to your inbox beyond the spoken word, subscribe to our MoneyNeverSleeps newsletter right here on Substack. Before we started the episode, we were thrilled to announce our inclusion in FeedSpot’s Top 20 Entrepreneur Podcasts You Must Follow in 2020. Thank you FeedSpot! We start this week with the crossover of a few pieces of content from the past two weeks on challenger banks, in particular the Big 3 of Monzo, Starling and Revolut. Recent reports highlighted their financial results and compared and contrasted them, and one thought from Lex Sokolin of the Fintech Blueprint particularly struck a chord, and this is at the heart of what we dug into on the first half of this episode through the following stories: Starling, Revolut and Monzo’s annual results compared (Sifted, 17-Aug-20) Art Wittmann, Industry Research in “Chasing Profitability in a Changing Media Landscape” (Oracle NetSuite’s Brainyard)- how media companies make money PRA challenges business models of new banks in consultation paper (Finextra, 24-Aug-20) In the second half of the episode, Pete and Eoin each went through their Top 5 MoneyNeverSleeps episodes of all time to come up with the Top 10.
