These behaviors can range from minor disruptions to severe aggression, and can be caused by a variety of factors such as trauma, mental health issues, or a lack of appropriate social skills.   One of the most effective ways to address challenging behaviors is through the use of positive behavior supports or PBS. Are you aware that some of the most famous inventors, entertainers, scientists, athletes, musicians, and writers were diagnosed with autism? Albert Einstein, Dan Akroyd, Emily Dickinson, Armani Williams, Bill Gates, and Elon Musk. My next guest, Tahra Cessna, understands that no matter what traits of autism you or your loved one may have, a person with autism has their own unique strengths and abilities. People without autism often have a range of interests and can easily switch focus from one topic or activity to another and may not commit to excelling at one particular thing; people with autism may have a limited and narrow range of interests.This characteristic may contribute to the success that many people with ASD experience in life. By focusing on and maintaining one core interest for years or even for most of one's life, the person with ASD can use this interest to accomplish great things.Tahra Cessna is a Board Certified Behavior Analyst, and the Chief Clinical Officer for Positive Behavior Supports Corp. She received her BCaBA certification in 2008 and her BCBA certification in 2016. In the 13 years that Tahra has worked with the agency, she has supported growth from a small pocket in South Florida with less than 150 clients to serving individuals with unique needs across 24 states and Canada with nearly 7,000 active clients. Tahra has used a model as a springboard to develop new leaders and expand the organization from 1 region to 71 regions. Tahra's work with the agency and nearly 20 years of working in the field of applied behavior analysis have led to multiple publications on the topics of transitions, quality of life, and sexuality education and afforded more than 100 speaking opportunities at the national and international levels.   A former educator, Tahra recognized the deficits of public and private schools in her area, which led her to open the Treasure Coast Autism Project or TCAP, a private, non-profit school for children on the autism spectrum. The school began in August of 2011, serving 11 students ages 8 to 11 in one classroom, and has expanded to help hundreds of elementary through high school students.  Before her work with Positive Behavior Supports Corp. and The Treasure Coast Autism Project, Tahra was the Director and founder of Behavioral Building Blocks, where she and her team provided wrap-around Applied Behavior Analysis services within a clinic and home and community settings to over 75 individuals with special needs over the course of four years.   Tahra is passionate about enhancing the quality of life for her clients and her team and uses the principles of organizational behavioral management to improve individual and group performance to guide Clinical and Regional Directors in attaining their personal and professional goals.

​May is Mental Health Awareness Month. Mental Health America is using this May to build upon last year's "Tools 2 Thrive" campaign by sharing “practical tools that everyone can use to improve their mental health and increase their resiliency regardless of their personal situation." Susan Barrett and Dr. Brandi Simonsen from The Center on PBIS jumped right on top of the theme and started a social media campaign called #SchoolWellnessPBIS on Facebook and Twitter. With online spaces flooded with resources around how to support mental health in schools, their goal was to curate a list of tips and resources for incorporating positive mental health strategies in the classroom. After sharing a few of their strategies in this month's Teach by Design article, we wanted to invite them to the podcast to talk a little about the inspiration behind the campaign and why they feel it's so important to talk about mental health in schools right now. Our conversation includes ideas you can implement today to support students, teachers, and create a community focused not just on self-care, but collective care. As Susan shared, "How do we take care of each other? How do we slow down and build a sense of community...and ecosystem where everybody is thriving?" Sounds like a goal we can all get behind.Susan Barrett serves as a Director for the Center for Social Behavior Support (CSBS) at Old Dominion University and she is an Implementer Partner with The Center on PBIS. She assists with large-scale implementation of PBIS, partners with researchers to evaluate the impact of PBIS on students, school staff, and school communities, and serves on the Board of Directors for the Association of Positive Behavior Supports. She also co-leads a PBIS and mental health expansion effort called the Interconnected Systems Framework. In her research, Susan explores topics ranging from large-scale adoption of PBIS, to mental health, to the adoption of evidence-based practices in schools. Brandi Simonsen is a professor of Special Education with tenure in the Department of Educational Psychology at the Neag School of Education and the Co-Director of the Center for Behavioral Education and Research at the University of Connecticut. She is also the Co-Director of The Center on PBIS, a Co-Principal Investigator of the National Multi-Tiered System of Supports Research Network, a Senior Advisor to the National Center on Intensive Interventions (NCII), and an editorial board member for the Journal of Emotional and Behavioral Disorders. In this episode of Behavioral Observations, I chat with Drs. Florence DiGennaro-Reed, Derek Reed, and Gregory Madden. While we talked a bit about their new book, An Introduction to Behavior Analysis, we framed the discussion around the process of teaching itself, textbook notwithstanding. Before getting into the content itself, let me introduce our guests: Dr. DiGennaro-Reed is an Associate Professor in and Chairperson of the Department of Applied Behavioral Science at the University of Kansas where she directs the Performance Management Laboratory and Performance Management Center. Her research examines effective and efficient staff training and performance improvement practices. She also conducts translational research in on-campus laboratory facilities. Dr. Derek Reed is a familiar voice to long-time BOP listeners. He is, among other things, an Associate Professor in the Department of Applied Behavioral Science at the University of Kansas where he directs the Applied Behavioral Economics Laboratory. Dr. Gregory Madden teaches and conducts research at Utah State University. Here is an excerpt of his bio in his own words: "I am a Professor in the Department of Psychology. I teach PSY1400/1410, which is the introductory course in behavioral processes. Topics range from free will to interventions designed to treat depression and drug dependence. I also teach an upper-division course on applying behavior-change technology to workplace settings." It turns out that they've been working on this book for roughly six years. We talked about why they thought a new ABA text was necessary, what makes this book stand apart from other really good ones that are out there, and how they attacked the massive challenge that is the writing process itself. Along the way, we ended up getting into what makes for good university instruction, the need (perceived or otherwise) to "sell" students on Behavior Analysis, and lots of other interesting nuggets and tips for those who have the important task of teaching the next generation of behavior analysis students. In this episode, we talked about what these five laws are, and how one can apply them to just about anything in life, and see positive outcomes as a result. Because both of these gentlemen are previous guests on the show, we started off by catching up a bit. Aimee Newswanger, an Education Consultant with Early Intervention Technical Assistance (EITA) is joined in conversation with Marie Groody, the school readiness director and local PAPBS Facilitator and Jennifer Knepshield Director of Program Development, both from the Child Development Inc. Head Start Program in Schuylkill County. Also joining them is Gia Ostroff-Welsh, a school psychologist in early childhood with the Bucks County Intermediate Unit.
