What does it mean to break down information in order to build up social competencies? And how does that relate to people with compelling social anxiety? In this discussion with the founder of Social Thinking, Michelle Garcia Winner, we explore the relationship between "being social" and social cognition (ie. social thinking). We touch on four areas of executive function that can foster our ability to learn how to take action on social dynamics that we want to do and are important to us. Get a better understanding of social dynamics and how to help your kids navigate them. Michelle Garcia Winner, MA, CCC-SLP, is the founder and CEO of Think Social Publishing, Inc, (a.k.a. In today's episode, I'm thrilled to have Fran Kenton with us to discuss social emotional learning (SEL). Fran holds a Master's degree in Educational Psychology, along with credentials in General and Special Education, and is a Certified Health and Wellness Coach. She is the founder of Autonome, a dynamic and interactive SEL program designed for teens and young adults. In our conversation today, we'll explore how Fran's unique approach can cultivate crucial skills in kids and teens. She shares insights on what motivated her to focus on SEL, the importance of understanding what motivates a child, and how SEL encompasses a broad range of life skills. We'll discuss the proven benefits of SEL, its integration into curriculum, and why these skills are best taught in an educational setting where all children can be reached. Recognizing a critical gap in traditional education, Fran founded Autonome to integrate SEL and mindfulness practices into the learning experience. Her innovative approach equips young people with the necessary skills to manage life's complexities, fostering self-awareness, self-management, responsible decision-making, social awareness, and relationship skills. These competencies form the foundation of Autonome's program, reflecting a culmination of Fran's experiences. Join us as Fran Kenton shares her vision for empowering young people with the tools they need to navigate life successfully. Show Notes: [1:53] - Fran has culminated all her experiences as an educator and counselor. She shares what has inspired her to put her focus on social-emotional learning. [3:45] - In the early years of her career as an educator, Fran found herself drawn to helping students who struggled with social-emotional learning. [6:28] - We need to know what motivates a child to truly engage them in learning. [8:12] - Oftentimes when parents see their child struggling, there is a tendency to focus on academic performance. But that's not the only thing we should look at. [10:12] - Social-emotional learning is an umbrella that encompasses a series of skills and competencies to successfully navigate life in general. [11:44] - There are five broad interrelated SEL competencies: self-awareness, self-management, responsible decision-making, social awareness, and relationship skills. [14:44] - Research and data support social-emotional learning. [16:15] - It has been shown that school is the best place to learn these skills because more children can be reached. These skills don't necessarily come naturally. [17:59] - SAFE is an acronym for Sequence, Active, Focused, and Explicit. [21:26] - Parents and families need to learn these skills as well in order to reinforce them at home. [22:28] - Before we can manage any task and emotion, we have to stop and tune in to what we are sensing at that moment and understand our perception. [24:40] - Mindfulness is the beginning. Then we need to move forward with tools to manage emotions and tasks. [26:01] - Fran explains her motivation and inspiration in founding Autonome. [29:04] - Autonome's program can be integrated into a school's curriculum and teachers do not need any formal training to be able to use it. [31:24] - It is important for parents to understand that these skills are not natural. They need to be taught and modeled. About Our Guest: Fran Kenton, M.A. in Educational Psychology with credentials in general and special education, is the founder of Autonome, a social emotional learning (SEL) program for teens and young adults. With a background as a middle school teacher and counselor in the Lawndale School District, Fran has extensive experience working with at-risk youth. She later continued her career in the Las Virgenes Unified School District, focusing on special needs students and co-creating the Transition Curriculum to aid their post-high school transitions. Certified as a Health and Wellness Coach, she also provides life coaching services and works with The Robert and Susan Kozlowski L.I.F.T. Foundation. Fran's dedication to integrating SEL and mindfulness into education led to the creation of Autonome, aimed at equipping young people with essential life skills. EPISODE 31: This week, we're diving into a topic that keeps popping up in our community, and it's a two-part issue.Firstly, some parents are puzzled about how to help their kids at school as they come home on Fridays exhausted and frustrated, or they flat out refuse to go to school, claiming it's just too stressful. Even when they do go, they return home stressed and unwilling to do homework.Teachers are noticing these struggles, too. Kids aren't turning in their work, not keeping up, with or without IEPs. It feels like we can't quite meet our kids' needs at school. But there's another side to this coin. Some parents are pushing for their children to catch up, achieve, and be successful in school. That's something schools want, too - kids to be in class every day so they fit in with their peers. However, what often gets overlooked is whether the kids feel safe at school.I feel like this is such an important conversation, so in this episode, I've brought on an expert who does this all day, every day.Meet Dr. Emily King, a Child Psychologist and former School Psychologist who has two decades of experience working closely with neurodivergent kids and teens. She received her Ph.D. in School Psychology from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and is well-versed in Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy, DIR/Floortime, Conscious Discipline, and Social Thinking methodologies.Dr. Emily is also the founder of Learn with Dr. Emily™ where she shares online resources related to raising and educating neurodivergent youth. She specializes in providing therapy and consultation services for children diagnosed with autism, anxiety, ADHD, depression, and learning difficulties. She is passionate about empowering parents and teachers to take care of themselves so they can become the supportive adults that every neurodivergent child needs in their life. Join us for this interview, where we'll be discussing the hurdles neurodivergent kids face in school, the gap between expectations and support, the impact of anxiety on learning, and the importance of collaboration between parents and teachers. It's a conversation you really don't want to miss out on!Tune in now!Key Takeaways:Intro (00:00)Who is Dr. Emily King (02:34)Misconceptions about meeting the needs of neurodivergent children (05:37)The importance of communication between teachers and parents (11:39)The mismatch between child's abilities and school expectations (17:29)Dr. Emily's takeaway for educators and parents (23:58)The first step towards teamwork in helping kids (26:22)Sources for Dr. Emily's kid and teacher support strategies (28:52)Additional resources:

In this episode, Jenny & Sheena chat about emotional regulation, handling toddler tantrums, sibling rivalry and more. They share some of their favorite resources for teaching emotions and emotional regulation, including Social Thinking by Michelle Garcia Winner and Zones of Regulation by Leah M. Kuypers. It's important for our kids to know that there is no bad emotion…and we can still work on regulating our emotions and making sure our reaction matches the problem. And with summer coming up and kids being out of school and having less structure, there will be plenty of opportunities to practice! For the past few years, I've been hearing about this concept called “declarative language,” and although I had an idea of what it was, after reading my guest Linda Murphy's Declarative Language Handbook, I couldn't wait to bring her on the show because it offers another transformational tool for our parenting differently wired kids' toolbox. Linda describes declarative language as a positive, thoughtful communication style that emphasizes understanding, patience, respect, and kindness, and as you'll hear from our conversation, it is an ideal communication style for really all children, but especially neurodivergent children and kids whose nervous systems are triggered by demands or more imperative communication styles. We discussed the different ways we can communicate with our children, the language we use, and the effects that simple shifts in the way we have conversations can have in our daily interactions with them. We also explored what is declarative language versus imperative language, as well as the relationship between co-regulation and declarative language and why we should use them in tandem. In this episode, I speak with Michelle about her Social Thinking work, and we discussed her career working in an autism spectrum clinic, working with adults with brain injury, working in a high school, and later starting her own clinic. She talked about her enjoyment in working with those on the autism spectrum who have an established expressive and receptive language, as well as others with social learning challenges. She discussed how people tend to have different expectations for those they perceive has having learning differences verses those they perceive to be “bright” or “more able”. This later group tends to be judged far more critically resulting in the public having far less forgiveness for their “social errors”, which further perpetuates social anxiety. She sought to develop a system for helping these brighter individuals learn about the social world, rather on providing behavioral reinforcement. She begins her work with individuals by fostering awareness of social interactions, encouraging them to explore their own and other's possible social thinking, and how this process involves interpreting each other's social intentions in context. She discusses how this work is done both one on one, as well as within groups, and how the group participants tend to provide invaluable feedback to each other. She talks about the various factors she considers when working with clients, including social self-awareness, social attention, and ability to interpret (how literal or how abstract). We also discussed the interplay between social interactions, social anxiety and behavioral issues in children and adolescents, and how working on social problem solving helps to decrease anxiety, and fostering use of pro-social behavioral responses. Michelle Garcia Winner, MA, CCC-SLP, is the founder and CEO of Social Thinking and a globally recognized thought leader, author, speaker, and social-cognitive therapist. She is dedicated to helping people of all ages develop social emotional learning, including those with social learning differences. Across her 35-year career she has created numerous evidence-based strategies, treatment frameworks, and curricula to help interventionists develop social competencies in those they support. Michelle's work also teaches how social competencies impact people's broader lives, including their ability to foster relationships and their academic and career performance. She and her team continually update the Social Thinking® Methodology based on the latest research and insights they learn from their clients. She is a prolific writer and has written and/or co-authored more than 40 books and over 100 articles about the Social Thinking Methodology. Michelle maintains a private practice, The Center for Social Thinking, in Santa Clara, California, where she works with clients who continue to teach and inspire her.
Often we conflate a child to a diagnosis. We look at the characteristics of the diagnosis and we expect the child in question to resemble that summary. We forget that not only is each child unique, but each child has strengths that overflow the summary of the diagnosis and give us HOPE.Mentorships in Education is brought to you by Just Education, LLC and is hosted by Judith Epstein. In this brand new episode, guest Michelle Garcia Winner joins me as we discuss social thinking skills. If you have ever heard of the Zones of Regulation, Think Social, or Thinking About You Thinking About Me, you've got Michelle Garcia Winner to thank. Her work is recognized globally and she joins the Diverse Thinking Different Learning Podcast today in her mission to share the importance of social learning. Social Thinking is the ability to consider your own and others' thoughts, emotions, beliefs, intentions, and knowledge to help interpret and respond to the information in your mind and possibly through your social behavioral interactions. During the last two years, we have experienced never-before-seen changes in how we interact with others due to the pandemic. We know that socially, many children experienced social loss in addition to academic loss. But now what? How can we integrate evidence-based strategies to help children improve their social competencies? You don't want to miss this conversation. Listen to the brilliant Michelle Garcia Winner demonstrate the importance of social thinking skills and what we can do as parents and educators. Show Notes: [2:20] - Because of the pandemic, many children have experienced social loss in addition to academic loss. [3:11] - Kids don't only learn academics in schools, they learn how to be a part of a community. [4:01] - We tend to think that kids have a lot of these social skills when they start school. [5:02] - Social vocabulary is a component of the Social Thinking program. [6:31] - Michelle demonstrates a way to show kids to “think with their eyes.” [7:56] - Social expectations and social rules are constantly changing and we have to be flexible. [9:23] - Problems are not all the same size and most young children react to all problems as if they are the same size. [10:40] - There are so many hidden social rules in different situations. [12:07] - We need to teach why we do things in certain situations. [13:54] - Social thinking impacts more than just social interactions, but also academics. [14:57] - In many cases, we don't tell kids what we expect or why. [16:03] - Imagination also plays a key role. [18:34] - Isn't it amazing what your brain is already doing? Kids did remarkably well imagining that they were still in a classroom when shifting to distance learning. [20:27] - When we empower kids to describe what they want from others, they have better tools to reflect on their own behavior. [21:56] - We have to give ourselves grace that these skills are not always taught well. Each of us cannot do this full throttle all of the time. [24:02] - There is a difference in how we communicate and thrive socially, virtually and in-person, especially in young children. [25:59] - Because of the extended amount of time on screens, kids did not experience social learning. [26:56] - It is never too late to start Social Thinking. [28:03] - This learning is preparing children to live independently and is important to integrate into all learning. Dyslexia is a diagnosis that often brings confusion, trepidation and in some cases, sadness, to parents and children. At that time there was no name for what I had, and even though no one knew what was wrong with me, I was still faced with the over whelming task of dealing with my problem with reading if I was ever to have a “normal” life. With the help of a loving family and support from teachers and friends, I was able to succeed in reaching a functional level of reading. As a result, in 1967, I earned a B.S. degree in Physiological Psychology. As a part of my studies in learning disorders, I taught in the Psychological Clinic School at UCLA. After graduation I took a job as a Psychological Social Worker in a training school for juvenile delinquent boys. Many of these boys had problems with reading and as a result had great difficulty functioning in a normal classroom environment. In the 1980's, I taught in the public school system in Nashville, TN. In addition, I tutored a number of dyslexic children after school. I found that most of these kids struggled because they had never learned ways of compensating for their dyslexia. They lacked the kind of study skills needed by dyslexics to overcome their problems with reading and learning in general. I shared some of the techniques that I had developed for myself over the years and was amazed at their success. Most of the kids I worked with went from D's and F's to A's and B's in less than a semester. Here are some of the positive qualities around being dyslexic: - Dyslexics often enjoy and excel at solving puzzles. - Dyslexics have an excellent comprehension of the stories read or told them. - Most dyslexics often have a better sense of spatial relationships and better use of their right brain. - Dyslexics have excellent thinking skills in the areas of conceptualization, reason, imagination, and abstraction. - Dyslexics have a strong ability to see concepts with a "big picture" perspective. - Dyslexics are adept to excellence in areas not dependent on reading. - Dyslexics typically have a large spoken vocabulary for their age. - Dyslexics tend to be more curious, creative, and intuitive than average. - Dyslexics' special mode of thought easily produces the gift of mastery. - Dyslexia is not related to low intelligence.CONNECT WITH USConnect with Judi Our website and podcasts are available hereJudi on Linkedin

He has studied these questions in average individuals as well as a range of disorders such as autism, prosopagnosia (face blindness), dementia, addiction and eating disorders. Mark was awarded the CJ Martin Fellowship from the National Health and Medical Research Council and the Queen Elisabeth II Fellowship from the Australian Research Council. His work has been highlighted in the media both locally [Catalyst (ABC), Making Australia Happy (ABC), SkyNews] and internationally [The Guardian (UK), New York Times (USA), Economist, New Scientist, Leading Edge, (BBC: UK), Science in Action (BBC; International)]. In addition to his teaching and research work at Macquarie University, Mark now runs programmes for schools, parents, businesses and individuals to address the many problems that technologies (like smartphones) are creating. Learning outcomes, resilience, curiosity, tolerance and emotional intelligence are all declining whilst stress, anxiety, depression and suicide are rising. Money and technology alone are not the answer to innovative practices in our schools, workplaces and society. My guest this week is Michelle Winner, MA, CCC-SLP who specializes in the treatment of individuals with social learning challenges and is the founder and CEO of Social Thinking®, a company dedicated to helping individuals from four through adulthood develop their social competencies to meet their personal social goals. Michelle coined the term “Social Thinking” in the mid-1990s and since that time has created numerous unique treatment frameworks and curricula that help educators, clinicians, professionals of all types, and parents/family members appreciate that social capabilities are integral to a person's success in life, socially, academically, and professionally. In this episode, Michelle and I discuss what social skills actually entail. Most people, including education professionals, believe that social skills can be taught the way other competencies are taught. Michelle has dedicated her entire career to helping school professionals and parents understand that social skills involve so much more. That's why she created “Social Thinking” courses. Many people have the ability to hear their own thoughts, that inner voice, and observe their thoughts before speaking or taking action. This enables them to engage in a conversation, join a group, meet new people, etc. Michelle noticed early on that there are many people in the world, even high academic achievers, who do not possess this ability innately. So she has designed several programs, developed research, and written many papers on how to help people learn social thinking. Head over to SocialThinking.com for lots of free resources on this topic.

Social media can be a bit unnerving for most brands - at least those who don't truly understand it. It is more than just posting on Facebook, although many brands still do not realise this. Simon Kemp has developed brand and marketing strategies for many of the world's most admired companies, including Unilever, Google, Coca-Cola, Nestlé, and Diageo. Over 12 million people around the world have read his marketing books and guides, and he appears regularly on television and in the press to discuss brands and marketing strategy. Simon is the founder of Kepios, a marketing strategy consultancy, as well as Regional Managing Partner for We Are Social in Asia, and Head of Asia Pacific for Contagious's consulting division, Insider. He was recently recognised as one of Asia's Most Influential Digital Marketers by CMO Asia magazine, and was featured in Campaign Asia's 40 Under 40 honours list in 2014. He has also been a global management consultant, working at both Accenture and Ascension Strategy Consulting. Simon knows social. He knows how to put it together for brands around the world. Digital influencer, Simon Kemp goes into some extreme detail as to how you can improve your digital social media strategy and implementation, to attract and retain your audience. It's about thinking how to do it easier. It's not easy, but with some of the key content principles that Simon outlines, you can get to the bottom of creating a remarkable business online, every time with social media that works. Michelle Garcia Winner, MA, CCC-SLP. The Center for Social Thinking The Whole Child and Social Thinking—Unraveling the challenges of a diagnosis to support social thinking and learning Michelle Garcia Winner specializes in the treatment of individuals with social-cognitive deficits: those with diagnoses such as high-functioning autism, Asperger Syndrome and nonverbal learning disorder. She began teaching Social Thinking® in 1995 to brighter students when she went to work for a high school district as the district's speech language pathologist. Social Thinking was born out of necessity as a way to reach those “bright but socially clueless students” that needed more information than just what social skill to use. They needed to know why they should bother to use that skill. The strength of Michelle's work is that she breaks down the research and abstract concepts and creates concrete ways for this to be done. This approach led GreatSchools.org, a leading national nonprofit organization, to call Michelle, "...the leading expert in the field of social skills."
