A decade-old Indigenous title claim covering the City of Kamloops, Sun Peaks Resort, and a vast area of surrounding land is drawing new attention at the B.C. Legislature. This comes just weeks after a B.C. Supreme Court ruling recognized Aboriginal title over land in Richmond. Now, the BC Conservatives are calling on Premier Eby to pause negotiated title agreements until the Cowichan Tribes ruling is resolved. Finally, the end to a long standoff...hundreds of ostriches at a B.C. farm were shot dead after a Supreme Court ruling. What's next for the farm? Hotel Pacifico was created by Air Quotes Media with support from our presenting sponsor TELUS, as well as FortisBC, BC Dairy and Port of Vancouver. This week, Mike and Geoff leave no Stone unturned - Todd Stone, that is. The CEO of the Association for Mineral Exploration (AMEBC) and former BC Liberal/United MLA for Kamloops-South Thompson checks into Hotel Pacifico for a one-year “wellness check” since leaving politics. The three dig into modern mineral exploration in BC, what it's like lobbying the provincial government from the outside, and his advice for those considering a future in politics. Stone serves up some nuggets. In the Strategy Suite, Geoff and Mike welcome back public affairs consultant and political commentator Maeghan Dewar. Together, they discuss the possibility of a snap election in BC, Premier Eby's U-turn on his ad campaign targeting US decision-makers, and what the latest Angus Reid poll reveals about public opinion on reconciliation. Also, they consider whether the Green Party's new strategy to raise taxes on the rich will lead to electoral fortunes.
Hotel Pacifico was created by Air Quotes Media with support from our presenting sponsor TELUS, as well as FortisBC, BCGEU, BC Dairy and Port of Vancouver. This week, a special guest returns to the hotel – the 37th Premier of British Columbia, Hon. David Eby. Geoff and Mike talk with the Premier about the year that was and what's changed since the 2024 election. They discuss challenges with the deficit and resourcing in healthcare, how BC is following Ontario's lead with a new ad campaign targeting President Trump's tariffs, and what landowners can expect from the government following the Cowichan Decision. In the Strategy Suite, Mike and Geoff are joined by hotel regular and Conservative political advisor Kory Teneycke. The trio chew over the Trump Trade War, the impact of Ontario's ad on both sides of the border, and whether all Conservative parties are doomed to succumb to infighting.
Cheryl and Erika dive into Alberta's two biggest brawls: Smith's pipeline push and a teachers' strike that's testing parents' patience (and the UCP's polling). We unpack the real differences between TMX and the North Coast pipeline idea, what Premier Eby says is at risk in B.C., and why “fighting forever” might be the Alberta Premier's political sweet spot. Bonus: the Grey Cup “grand bargain,” Keystone as a bargaining chip, and whether Ottawa will blink. Then we pivot to classrooms: hiring promises vs. classroom reality, what the ATA really wants (hint: more than a wage line), and why public sentiment could decide the outcome faster than any bargaining table can. We wrap with Alberta's new license-plate pageant (Strong and Free meets shiny distraction) and a few spicy one-liners you'll want to steal for your next dinner debate.

B.C Premier David Eby says that, if re-elected, he would expand involuntary care for those with severe addiction and mental health issues. The announcement came just a few weeks after a couple of unprovoked, violent attacks in downtown Vancouver where one man died, and another was severely injured. Many Vancouverites were shaken by what happened, and Premier Eby cited the attacks when he spoke about the need for more involuntary care in the province. But many public health experts and civil liberties advocates question whether this is the best approach to dealing with public safety concerns and a drug poisoning crisis.Journalist and writer Anna Mehler Paperny has done a lot of reporting on Canada's mental health care system. And invitations for Nazis, cancellations for Jews - we analyze the shameful takedown of NDP MLA Selina Robinson and try to figure out where exactly the line for cancellable offence is.Correction (Feb. 8, 2024): This episode originally described Susan Kim as a member of British Columbia's Legislative Assembly, suggested that Premier David Eby allowed her to continue in her role after she apologized for casting doubt on the use of sexual violence by Hamas. Kim is in fact a Victoria city councillor who added her name to a late-October open letter that made reference to “the unverified accusation that Palestinians were guilty of sexual violence.” While Municipal Affairs Minister Anne Kang called on Kim to apologize (which she subsequently did), and declined to call for Kim's resignation, Premier Eby himself did not weigh in.Host: Jesse BrownCredits: Jess Schmidt (Producer), Caleb Thompson (Audio Editor), Karyn Pugliese (Editor-in-Chief)Guest: Rachel Matlow Further reading: Danielle Smith's “Preserving Choice for Children and Youth” announcement video on XOpinion: Danielle Smith's sex-ed policy changes are putting all Alberta teenagers at risk - John Ibbitson, The Globe and MailThe influence of conventions in the SCC's decision re: Ford's ministerial mandate letters - Emmett MacfarlaneJoni Mitchell performs at Grammys, 50 years after 1st win - CBC News Sponsors: Douglas, Squarespace, Ecojustice, oxio, Article, Athletic Greens, BetterHelp, Canva, Peloton If you value this podcast, Support us!
