DJ Flight has been a constant throughout the many peaks and troughs of drum & bass. She's one of the genre's key chroniclers, with a real-time history of drum & bass in her archives as a radio presenter, and a level of behind the scenes involvement that spans decades. While Flight's advocacy for equitable gender representation in drum & bass through her EQ50 collective is the most visible, it's by no means the sole initiative. Her work also extends to the Prison Radio Association—the only radio station made specifically for incarcerated people—as well as the Windrush Stories series, which focuses on the cultural history and contributions of Afro-Caribbean migrants to the UK. Flight is also, plainly, a wicked DJ, who doesn't prefer one scene or subgenre over another—which also makes her a font of knowledge. (Her history of 2000s drum & bass is among the best genre deep dives we've ever published.) This RA Podcast is two hours of majestic, freewheeling beats that touch on every corner of drum & bass: from the minimalistic and razor-edged to ragga looseness, with a killer downtempo outro to smooth out the final landing. RA.942 is a first class journey from one of the scene's most enduring heroes. Big up Flight. @djflight Read more at https://ra.co/podcast/942

As a society, we send close to 100,000 people to prison each year. But what happens to people while they're behind bars? Sally Tilt and Dr Kerensa Hocken are forensic psychologists who work in prisons. Their role is to help people in prison look at the harm they've caused to other people, understand why it happened and figure out how to make changes to prevent further offending after they've been released. In Behind the Crime, they take the time to understand the life of someone who's ended up in prison, and what happened afterwards. In this episode, they talk to 23 year-old Courtney, a mum who received a five-year sentence for her part in a series of armed robberies at the age of 17. Through the course of the conversation, they explore some of the key events in Courtney's life and track some of the threads that led her down a path to prison. At the same time, Sally and Kerensa explain some of the methods they use to reach the core factors that can lead to people harming others – and how they then work with people in prison to prevent further harm from happening in the future. Tanjit Dosanjh is an optometrist. When his father went to prison, he decided he wanted to help people in prison by using his professional skills. He learned of optical labs in California's prisons, and raised enough money to launch an optical training lab inside HMP Standford Hill in 2012. Since then, he's trained 60 prisoners, 45 of whom have secured jobs with opticians.  He also secured optometry contracts with 60 prisons. Spectacles are made by prisoners, which makes the organisation financially self-sustaining. Tanjit's essay comes from the book Humane Justice, published by the charity Khulisa as part of the Monument Fellowship. The Prison Radio Association is the charity that produces this podcast. Our day job is running National Prison Radio, which is the world's first national radio station for people in prison. It broadcasts 24/7 into the cells of 80,000 people in prison across England and Wales. Last night, Thursday 26 November, we attended not one, but TWO award ceremonies. Both online. One was the Criminal Justice Alliance Media Awards, and the other was the Audio Production Awards, one of the major dates in the UK media calendar. It was hosted by Jeremy Vine and Snoochie Shy. It was an amazing night, and we wanted to tell our listeners in prison all about it. We also wanted to give you the chance to hear some of what makes National Prison Radio special. Presenters: Andrew Wilkie and Brenda Birungi Guests: Hilary Ineomo-Marcus, Anthony Olanipekun, Nancy Prentice, Jerelle Forbes, Phil Maguire Producer: Andrew Wilkie

Radio produced and broadcast by prisoners for prisoners has emerged as something of a media social movement with initiatives and developments happening in many parts of the world. Charlotte Bedford played a founding role in the establishment of the UK National Prison Radio service and her book, “Making Waves Behind Bars”, just published, presents a history of the Prison Radio Association in the UK. Currently she’s investigating ways that radio can be used - both inside and outside of prisons in South Australia - to improve the wellbeing of prisoners and better prepare them for reintegration into society.
