Teenage years can be difficult transitional years. Most people, including teenagers themselves, have little to no idea how much worse processed foods can make those years. As teenagers prepare to leave high school and join the complicated world of adulthood, it is tragic to think that they are doing so with the consequences of processed foods. Surprising consequences can include depression, anxiety, irritability, fatigue, disrupted sleep, racing thoughts, brain fog, weight gain, eating disorders, and illnesses. Find out how to support teenagers to develop their own desire to avoid processed foods. Dr. Ifland is the lead author of the first scholarly description of processed food addiction and definition of addictive foods. She earned her PhD in addictive nutrition at Union Institute and University (2010); her MBA at Stanford Business School (1978) and her BA in Economics and Political Science at Oberlin College (1974). Dr. Ifland has been creating breakthroughs in recovery from food addiction from 1999 with her first popular book to 2018 when her textbook, Processed Food Addiction: Foundations, Assessment, and Recovery was released by CRC Press. She has been selected for her expertise by Oprah Winfrey Network, Martha Stewart Wedding Magazine, Fortune Magazine, and US News and World Report. Key Takeaways How parents can model healthy eating choices to help their teens create good habits. The human brain is wired to fit in and belong. If your teen associates with people who have poor eating habits, it is likely they will be influenced by those habits. Your teens are being inundated with messages that drive their motivation to eat unhealthy food. When you keep food in your home that contains poor quality nutrients such as processed food, sugar, flour, preservatives, additives, etc. your kids will learn to crave those unhealthy foods. Limiting the availability of poor-quality food in your home can help shift your teens eating behavior. Create a list of clean eating foods and have a family meeting to talk about which foods your family enjoys so you can keep them on hand. Make healthy food readily prepared and available so your teen can grab a healthy snack or meal when time is limited. Get your family involved in preparing and cooking by scheduling family cooking sessions once a week. This will set them up for life-long success. As your teens begin to make healthy food choices, keep track of improvements you see in their sleep, behavior, grades, outlook, health, motivations, sports, etc. Sponsored by EdGerety.com Resources Website: FoodAddictionReset.com Website: ProcessedFoodAddiction.com Self-Quiz to see how you are experiencing food addiction in your own life: Take the Quiz

About 1 in 5 American children has obesity. Compared to children with healthy weight, children with obesity are at a higher risk for asthma, sleep apnea, bone and joint problems, type 2 diabetes, and risk factors for heart disease such as high blood pressure. "Childhood obesity continues to rise around the world, and the World Health Organization has called it “one of the most serious public health challenges of the 21st century.” Yet the prevalence of childhood obesity appears to vary across countries. Island nations in the Pacific, such as Nauru and the Cook Islands, appear to have the highest obesity rates among children 5 to 19, but the countries Ethiopia and Burkina Faso appear to have the lowest rates. The number of obese or overweight children 5 and younger climbed from 32 million globally in 1990 to 41 million in 2016, according to WHO data. If current trends continue, the number of overweight or obese children in that age group could increase to 70 million by 2025." (CNN Health News)

In Today's episode, Clarissa and Molly speak with Dr. Joan Ifland. Joan Ifland is a researcher and educator in the field of food addiction and allergies. She was the founder in 1996 of The Sugars and Flours Project of Houston which provides education about food reactions. In 2007, she founded the Refined Food Addiction (ReFA) Research Foundation which is dedicated to facilitating the flow of information between clinicians and researchers. She is the lead author of the first academically published description of food addiction in humans. She is a co-founder of the Society of Food Addiction Professionals. Dr. Ifland's approach to recovery from stubborn diet-related diseases is clear: address food addiction as the driver of over-consumption of harmful processed foods Since 1996, Dr. Ifland has helped people recover from diet-related diseases by focusing on addiction to processed foods. Through the adaptation of drug and alcohol addiction recovery methods, Dr. Ifland gives practitioners and clients new insights into why food addiction recovery can generate extraordinary health outcomes. In this episode: Dr. Ifland discusses what inspired her to write the textbook, Processed Food Addiction: Foundations, Assessment, and Recovery She makes it clear that she is NOT a clinician, she is a researcher and peer-support specialist. The Addiction Reset Community (ARC) is a peer support community and relies on Mirror Neurons to be effective. She also cautions, the ARC is NOT a stand-alone answer How Big Food uses our biological wiring against us with the 5 A's: Advertising, Availability, Affordability, Addictive substances in the product, Age of Onset taken from Big Tobacco We talk about the research around fasting and how you can get addicted to the starvation “high” What she would say to the eating disorder professionals who do not believe in Processed Food Addiction How she guides people through volume eating What she suggests for people to be able to live their lives surrounded by marketing aimed at keeping us thinking about processed food Her upcoming research in a hospital setting Safe weight management and how she NEVER celebrates weight-loss What can be done to have the APA and WHO consider Food Addiction as a diagnosis What research is still needed How she answers our signature question Follow Dr. Ifland: Book: Processed Food Addiction: Foundations, Assessment, and Recovery Website: Processedfoodaddiction.com Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/joan.ifland.1 Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/foodaddictionreset/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/pfaddiction The content of our show is educational only. Get ready for a fascinating show with Dr. Joan Ifland, a leading expert in the very serious issue of processed food addiction. It is rare to find someone who is as knowledgeable as Dr. Ifland in the field of food addiction. Her textbook, Processed Food Addiction: Foundations, Assessment, and Recovery, provides the most extensive literature review on the subject – a valuable resource. She is increasingly recognized as the leading authority in addiction to processed foods, and is passionate about helping people understand why it is that they cannot get any semblance of control over their processed food consumption, and especially, why that loss of control is not their fault.Dr. Ifland is a scientist who also holds an MBA from Stanford, and in a breakthrough to understanding the source of obesity, zeroed in on how the tobacco industry has played a key role in taking control of processed foods and spreading processed food addiction. Check out her website here.TIMESTAMPS:People are getting hooked on processed foods just like smoking addiction. [01:37]Dr. Ifland's background is unique…from business and finances to food addiction. [05:40]The food companies use the same tactics used by the tobacco companies to get you and the children addicted. [08:30]They alter children's brain function in order to get them to nag their parents for those sugary products. [14:10]Studies show that the taste of sugar, fat, or salt reaches our brain in a half-second as opposed to any other drug which can take up to 10 seconds or 10 minutes. [18:40]These are mood-altering substances. One doesn't realize that some of their physical ailments are caused by diet. [21:03]To see if you are addicted, get rid of these addictive foods for 30 days to see if you can do it. [23:57]You can't control what your kids eat but you can give them the opportunity to experiment by controlling the environment at home. [28:19]Is there a threshold where we can enjoy sugar, industrial seed oils and such, or we are talking about zero tolerance? [30:55]Many dieticians work for the food industry. [34:25]It's a vicious cycle. Stress activates the addiction. And the addiction activates stress. [38:29]Dr. Ifland has a community of people in recovery training to become peer support managers. [42:40]A self-quiz will give you an idea of how you stand in this addiction problem. [45:11]Can one be addicted to healthy things?
