Quran Class Surah 25 v 37-39 Session 10 The Dwellers of Ar-Rass The word Rass here refers to a water well that has not been built by bricks or stones. Prophet Salih (as) & The Nation of Thamud. Prophet Hanzalah ibn Safwân (as) & Ar-Raas. Prophet Hud ibn Abdullah ibn Rabah ibn Khalid ibn Jalood ibn Ad (as) & the Nation of Ad. The people of Ar-Rass were the remnants [approx 4,000 people] from one of the towns of Thamood. Prophet Salih (as) was with them and they took shelter in Hadramaut, Yemen. Prophet Salih (as) passed away hence the name 'Death Overcame' (Hadramaut). Prophet Hanzalah ibn Safwân (as) was sent to the people of Ar-Rass, as they fell into idol worship. The people belied & killed him then threw him into a well. So Ad ibn Aws ibn Eram ibn Sam ibn Nooh and his son-left Ar-Rass and descended in al-Ahqâf.  After that Allah destroyed the people of Ar-Rass and the descendants of these and other people spread all over Yemen and other parts of Earth.  The destruction of these people was the stripping of the water of the life-giving well. Then Jabroon ibn Sad ibn Äd ibn Aws ibn Eram ibn Sâm ibn Nooh went to Damascus and built a city there, which he named Jabroon (named after himself). This is the same city which is referred to in the Qur'an as 'Eram of the Pillars.' Then Allah SWT sent Prophet Hood (as) to Ad. This is referred to the descendents of Âd, who had descendents in al-Aqâf. They had subsequently rejected and belied him and so Allah SWT destroyed them.

The 12th Juz of the Quran encompasses Surah Hud (11:6) to Surah Yusuf (12:52). It begins with the continuation of Surah Hud, detailing the stories of various prophets, including Hud, Salih, Abraham, Lot, Shu'aib, and Moses. These narratives highlight the consistent message brought by all prophets: monotheism, righteous conduct, and the consequences of rejecting divine guidance. The Juz emphasizes that the fate of past nations serves as lessons for humanity, showcasing the triumph of the faithful and the downfall of the arrogant and disobedient. Surah Hud stresses the importance of patience and trust in Allah's wisdom, even when faced with adversity and seemingly insurmountable challenges. The story of Prophet Hud and his people, the Aad, exemplifies this, showing how Hud's steadfastness and reliance on Allah led to his salvation while his disbelieving people faced destruction. Transitioning to Surah Yusuf, the Juz introduces the story of Prophet Yusuf (Joseph), known for its profound lessons on faith, patience, and divine destiny. The narrative begins with Yusuf's childhood, his prophetic dream, and the jealousy of his brothers, who plot against him by throwing him into a well. Yusuf's journey unfolds with trials and tribulations, including being sold into slavery in Egypt and facing wrongful imprisonment due to false accusations. Despite these hardships, Yusuf remains patient and steadfast in his faith. The story illustrates the overarching themes of divine providence, the fulfillment of Allah's promises, and the ultimate victory of good over evil. The 12th Juz, therefore, reinforces the principles of faith, patience, and unwavering trust in Allah's plan, encouraging believers to remain steadfast in their devotion and righteousness. Quran chapter 11, known as Surah Hud, is the 11th chapter of the Quran and consists of 123 verses. It is named after the Prophet Hud (peace be upon him), who was sent by God to the people of 'Aad to warn them of their wrongdoing and call them to worship one God. The chapter addresses the themes of prophethood, monotheism, divine mercy, and accountability. Surah Hud begins with a discussion of the Quran as a clear book that provides guidance for humanity. It then recounts stories of past prophets and their communities, emphasizing the consequences of rejecting divine guidance. The story of Noah (peace be upon him) and his people serves as a warning about the punishment that befalls those who disobey God's commandments. The chapter also highlights the stories of Hud, Salih, Abraham, Lot, Shu'aib, and Moses (peace be upon them all), all of whom were sent as messengers to guide their people towards righteousness. Surah Ash-Shu'araa' is the 26th surah (chapter) in the Quran consisting of 227 verses. The surah is called "Ash-Shu'araa'" which means "The Poets" because it touches on the stories of the prophets and poets of old. The surah begins by introducing the reader to the story of Prophet Moses (pbuh) and how he was given revelation by God to deliver His message to Pharaoh and his oppressive people. There are also stories of Prophet Abraham (pbuh), Prophet Hud (pbuh), Prophet Saleh (pbuh), and many more prophets and their people who rejected the message they brought. In addition, this surah also contains moral teachings and guidance for mankind. It emphasizes the importance of believing in God, abandoning shirk (idolatry), clinging to virtuous values and shunning evil behavior. Surah Ash-Shu'araa' teaches us the importance of obeying God's commands and avoiding His prohibitions. It also inspires us to be firm preachers like the prophets in conveying the truth. By listening to the Surah Ash-Shu'araa' (Quran Chapter 26), we can gain a deeper understanding of God's messages in the Qur'an and reflect on the moral teachings contained therein. A believer, with his knowledge of faith, is far more patient, and never gives up hope of a better future. He remains hopeful, and looks forward to the good in all that happens. A person of strong faith is one who sees good in all that happens. Believers understand faith to mean not feeling disappointment for any event that occurs, and that all events have a divine purpose and good hidden within. Additionally, they are patient, hopeful, and never forget that there is always something good behind everything, no matter how, when, or where it takes place. A person who is a true believer must strive to remain faithful to their faith, and put their trust in God in every situation. They should not be impetuous and should be willing to accept the events that come to them, no matter what, knowing that there must be a divine purpose behind them. While they should take all appropriate action to address their problems, they should not be complacent or unrealistic in their optimism, as this is not true faith. The story of the Prophet Hud (peace be upon him) serves as an example of this, as he showed complete submission to God despite the threats of his people. Questions: What does it mean to recognize the good in all things? What is the consequence of people not being patient enough to see the good in what befall them? What is the difference between a believer's resignation and the approach of others? How can one recognize the good and divine purpose in every event brought before him by God?

Al-Ahqaf (Arabic: الأحقاف, al-aḥqāf; meaning: "the sand dunes" or "the winding sand tracts") is the 46th chapter of the Qur'an with 35 verses. This is the seventh and last chapter starting with the Muqattaʿat letters Hāʼ Mīm. Regarding the timing and contextual background of the believed revelation (asbāb al-nuzūl) The chapter covers various topics: It warns against those who reject the Quran, and reassures those who believe; it instructs Muslims to be virtuous towards their parents; it tells of the Prophet Hud and the punishment that befell his people, and it advises Muhammad to be patient in delivering his message of Islam. The name al-Ahqaf, translated as "the sand dunes" or "the winding sand tracks", is taken from verse 21 of the chapter, which mentions "the brother of 'Ad'" (a nickname for the ancient Arabian Prophet Hud) who "warned his people by the sand dunes". According to the 15th-16th century Quranic commentary Tafsir al-Jalalayn "Valley of Ahqaf" was the name of the valley, located today in Yemen, where Hud and his people lived Verse 15 of the chapter talks about the period of gestation and breastfeeding, saying that "His mother bears him with hardship and she brings him forth with hardship, and the bearing of him, and the weaning of him is thirty months ...". Another verse in the Quran, Chapter 2, Verse 233 speaks of mothers nursing their children for two full years. (11:1) Alif. Lam. Ra. This is a Divine Command whose contents have been made firm and set forth in detail from One Who is All-Wise, All-Aware (11:2) that you may worship none but Allah. Verily, I have come to you as a warner and a bearer of good news from Him (11:3) that you may seek forgiveness of your Lord and turn to Him in repentance whereupon He will grant you a fair enjoyment of life until an appointed term, and will bestow favour on everyone who merits favour. But should you turn away (from the truth), I fear for you the chastisement of an Awesome Day. (11:4) Unto Allah is your return, and He has power to do everything. (11:5) Lo! They fold up their breasts that they may conceal themselves from Him. Surely when they cover themselves up with their garments Allah knows well what they cover and what they reveal. Indeed He even knows the secrets hidden in the breasts. (11:6) There is not a single moving creature on the earth but Allah is responsible for providing its sustenance. He knows where it dwells and where it will permanently rest. All this is recorded in a clear Book. (11:7) And He it is Who created the heavens and the earth in six days - and [before that] His Throne was upon the water that He may test you, who of you is better in conduct If you were to say (O Muhammad): 'All of you will surely be raised after death', then those who disbelieve will certainly say: 'This is nothing but plain sorcery. (11:8) And were We to put off the chastisement from them for a determined period, they will cry out: 'What withholds Him from chastising?' Surely when the day of the chastisement will come, nothing will avert it and the chastisement which they had ridiculed shall encompass them. (11:9) If We ever favour man with Our Mercy, and then take it away from him, he becomes utterly desperate, totally ungrateful. (11:10) And if We let him taste favour after harm has touched him, he says: 'All my ills are gone', and he suddenly becomes exultant and boastful, (11:11) except those who are patient and act righteously. Such shall have Allah's forgiveness and a great reward. (11:12) (O Messenger!) Let it not happen that you omit (to expound) a portion of what was revealed to you. And do not be distressed that they will say: 'Why was a treasure not bestowed upon him?' or 'Why did no angel accompany him?' For you are merely a warner, whereas Allah has control over everything. (11:13) Do they say: 'He has invented this Book himself?' Say: 'If that is so, bring ten surahs the like of it of your composition, and call upon all (the deities) you can other than Allah to your help. Do so if you are truthful.' (11:14) Then if (your deities) do not respond to your call for help then feel assured that this Book was revealed with the knowledge of Allah, and that there is no true god but Him. Will you, then, surrender (to this truth)? (11:15) Those who seek merely the present world and its adornment. We fully recompense them for their work in this world, and they are made to suffer no diminution in it concerning what is their due. (11:16) They are the ones who shall have nothing in the Hereafter except Fire. (There they shall come to know) that their deeds in the world have come to naught; and that whatever they have done is absolutely useless.....

The history of the Prophet Hud is referred to in this chapter.  While the last chapter dealt mostly with abstract questions related to the truth of revelation, this chapter illustrates the truth of those questions by referring to the histories of former prophets.  Thus, it deals with the histories of Noah, Hud, Salih, Abraham, Lot and Shu'ayb (peace be upon them all).  A cruel and persecuting enemy is warned of the fate that befell previous people.  This chapter was revealed in Mecca during the last four years of the Prophet's life and consists of 123 verses.Once Abu Bakr said to Prophet Muhammad, may the mercy and blessings of God be upon him, "Of late I have been noticing that you are getting older.  What is the cause of it?" Prophet Muhammad replied that Surah Hud and similar chapters (56-Waqi'ah, 77-Mursalat, 78-Naba', and 99-Takwir) hastened old age on him (Tirmidhi).An attentive reading of this chapter will make you feel the effect of its stern warnings.  God warns us through the different stories of the prophets, where those who put their faith in the outward appearance of the worldly life and rejected the message of the prophets were met with dire consequences.  When God passes His judgment on people, He does not spare anyone, even the closest relative of a prophet.  Only the prophet and his followers are saved.Verses 1-7 Message of GodThese verses discuss the Quran and the attitude of the polytheists towards it and resurrection.The verses of the Quran have been explained clearly.  The message of the Quran is to worship God and seek forgiveness from Him.  Prophet Muhammad warns of God's punishment and at the same time he brings good news of Paradise.  God will judge mankind according to the deeds they did in this life.  Some people try to hide from God, but God knows their innermost secrets.God is responsible for sustaining every living creature.  God created the heavens and the earth in six days to test man if he realizes God's power and is thankful to Him.  Those who deny resurrection consider the Quran to be magic because of its convincing power.Verses 8-11 Polar attitude towards God's favorsThe verses compare the attitude of the believers and the polytheists towards favors and hardships.Do not be deceived by God's postponement of punishment as it can come at any time.  Also, do not lose hope and become ungrateful if God withdraws some of His favors.  At the same time, do not become arrogant if God makes you taste His bounty.  People have this attitude, except the patient ones who do good deeds.  They will be forgiven and have an immense reward.Verse 12 Prophet Muhammad's dealing with pagansThe verse describes Prophet's feeling of discomfort because of the behavior of the polytheists.Verses 13-14 Authenticity of the QuranThe authenticity of the Quran is proven to those who claim Prophet Muhammad fabricated it.  God challenges the experts of the Arabic language to bring ten chapters similar to it.  Their inability to respond should make you certain that the Quran is from God, there is no deity worthy of worship except Him, and you should submit to Him as Muslims.Verses 15-16 Future consequences of present behaviorThe consequence for those desiring solely the reward of this world is that they will receive their wages in this life, but Fire will be their lot in the life to come.  After all, they worked only for worldly objectives.Verses 17-24 The two partiesArchangel Gabriel, God's witness, confirms the Quran.  A person who follows the Quran and Moses' book (i.e.  Torah which foretold the coming of Prophet Muhammad) believes in it.  The Fire is for those who reject it.  Cursed are those losers who attribute lies to God, prevent others from God's path – Islam – and reject life after death.Those who have faith and do good deeds will reside in Paradise.Verses 25-49 Story of NoahThe people of Noah lived in southern Iraq, not too far from present day city of Kufah.  Noah's message to his people was:·       Worship God.·       Fear the punishment of a painful Day.But the leaders of his nation considered him to be a mere human followed by people of low status.  They rejected his answers and invited him to bring on the destruction he promised.  God instructed Noah to patiently bear their mockery and build the ark. Tenderness of a father could not save Noah's disbelieving son from drowning with the rest.  The ark, carrying Noah, fellow believers, and animals landed on Judi, which is said to be a  mountain facing Ibn Umar Island at the junction of the Syrian and Turkish borders, on the eastern bank of the Tigris River, visible from the Syrian town of Ain Diwar.Verses 50-60 Story of HudThe people of ‘Ad, to whom Hud was sent, lived in an area of curved sand hills in the southern part of the Arabian peninsula.  They worshiped a number of idols: wudd, suwa, yaguth, ya'uq, and nasr.Summary of Hud's message to his people:·       Worship God.·       I don't ask you for any reward for my preaching, it is with my Creator.·       Seek forgiveness from God, He will send rain and give you strength.·       I rely on God, my Lord and your Lord.·       God has full control of every creature.·       My Lord can substitute you with better people if you turn away.·       You won't harm God by not worshipping Him.The people rejected his message.  God's punishment which lasted for 8 days and 7 nights destroyed them for rejecting God and disobeying His prophets.  Hud and fellow believers were saved by God's mercy.Verses 61-68 Story of SalihThe dwelling places of Salih's people, Thamud, are situated somewhere between Hijaz and Syria in the southeastern part of Madyan which is situated east of the Gulf of Aqaba.  Chiseled out of stone, their dwellings are still preserved.Salih's message was similar to that of Noah and Hud.  In addition, he produced a female camel from the neighboring hills to prove that he was God's true prophet but warned people not to harm it.  Nevertheless, they killed it, thereby inviting God's wrath in the form of a heavenly scream that left them dead, face down in their homes. Verses 69-76 Story of AbrahamBorn in Iraq, Abraham settled in the city of Ur.  He traveled to Harran in the north of the Arabian Peninsula and then to Palestine with his wife, Sarah, and his nephew, Lot.  Due to a drought, he then moved to Egypt.  Lot returned with Abraham from Egypt, but parted ways because the land was not enough for both their herds.  Lot settled towards the Dead Sea near Sodom and Gomorrah.Abraham had three beautiful character traits: forbearing, repentant, and soft-hearted. He was quick to serve unannounced guests - angels of God - who brought two bits of news.  One, destruction was forthcoming to the people of Lot.  As for the second, the birth of Abraham's son, Isaac, from Sarah, his aged wife, and his grandson, Jacob.  Abraham makes a futile attempt to turn away the angels from Lot. Verses 77-83 Story of LotAs hospitable as his uncle, Lot is distressed to see young, attractive guests who people immediately wanted to sodomize.  Lot tries to reason with the people by pointing to available women for marriage and not to disgrace him.  Feeling powerless to protect his guests, the angels comfort Lot that he will be unharmed.  He was to leave town at nightfall with his family except his wife who would stay behind as she had informed people of the angelic guests.  God destroys them by lifting up the city, throwing it upside down, and raining them with stones due to their wickedness.Verses 84-95 Story of Shu'aybHe was sent to the people of Madyan who lived in the land of Hijaz, next to Syria and east of the Gulf of Aqaba.  According to some historians, that land is the site of the modern Saudi city of Tabuk.Shu'ayb's message:·       Worship God.·       Give full measure, do not give people less than what they pay for.·       Do not spread corruption on earth.·       Seek forgiveness from the Most Merciful, Most Loving Lord.·       Fear the punishment of a Day that will surround all.The disbelievers made fun of Prophet Shu'ayb's prayer, saying does it instruct him that they should leave ancestral gods or change how they dispose of their money. Shu'ayb reminds them that he only wishes reformation and God is his strength on Whom he relies.  His compassionate pleading to look at the ruins of Noah, Hud, Salih, and Lot does not convince them.  Shu'ayb and fellow believers are rescued when a scream destroys them as if they never existed.Verses 96-99 Story of MosesMoses left Egypt, and traveling through Sinai, he headed towards Madyan.  On his way he met his wife, the daughter of Shu'ayb.  On their return journey, God spoke to Moses at Mt. Tur (Mt. Horeb in Sinai) and thereafter, Moses returns to Egypt.God sent Moses with clear proofs to Pharaoh and his ministers, but the latter followed the misguided orders of their ruler instead.  Cursed in both worlds, just as they followed him in the cold water that drowned them, they will follow him into the Fire.Verses 100-102 InjusticeThey wronged themselves, God did not wrong them.  The gods they called upon besides God were of no use to them.Verses 103-109 Scenes from the Day of Resurrection and divine solace to the ProphetThe above narratives of the prophets are ‘signs' related to Prophet Muhammad for the benefit of those who fear the punishment of the afterlife. God will gather all the people on the Last Day, no one will be able to hide himself, and everyone will receive their full share.  On that Day a soul will speak only by God's permission.  The unfortunate ones will enter the Hellfire on that Day for eternity.  The fortunate ones will be in Paradise forever.Verses 110-111 Warning against casting doubt in the books of GodPeople treat their prophets the same.  Some accept their call, and others reject it.  Casting doubt, people denied Moses and the Torah like the pagans of Mecca denied Prophet Muhammad.  Those who rejected the prophets shall face the same fate.Verses 112-115 Means of achieving success in the world and the HereafterProphet Muhammad and the repentant believers with him are instructed by God to remain determined, establish regular prayer, and exercise patience.  Do not cross the boundaries and do not become partners with wrongdoers or else the Fire will touch you.Verses 116-119 God's way in destroying unjust nationsGod does not unjustly destroy cities while the residents are trying to reform.  Had God wanted, He could have made people follow a single religion, but He did not intend so for reasons known to Him.  Thus, people will continue to have differences except those upon whom the Lord has mercy: who follow the teachings of the prophets.  As for the rest, i.e. those who reject the message of God, He will punish them in Hell.Verse 120 The objectives of Quranic stories1.     Consoling Prophet Muhammad.2.     Sending truth to Prophet Muhammad.3.     Advice and a reminder to the believers.Verses 121-123 Practical benefits from the stories of messengers1.     God has absolute and complete knowledge of time and space - what is observable and what is hidden in the heavens and the earth and of the past and the present.2.     Everything returns to God in the life to come.  The creation cannot interfere in it.3.     Therefore, God must be worshipped and relied upon.4.     God knows our actions and our statements.  The good works of the obedient shall not go to waste and the rejection of the stubborn will not be forgotten._______________________________________By Imam Mufti (© 2015 IslamReligion.com)Copyright © 2006 - 2021 IslamReligion.com. This chapter is one of the longer chapters found at the beginning of the Quran.  It is generally accepted that it was revealed in Mecca.  It is named after the height of the barrier that will divide the saved and the damned on the Day of Judgement.  It begins by reassuring Prophet Muhammad, may the mercy and blessings of God be upon him, that the stories about disobedient communities of the past should serve as encouragement to the believers to take heed and repent before the great Day is upon them.Verses  1- 10 Take lessons from historyGod addresses Prophet Muhammad telling him not to feel any distress.  He (God) reassures him that this book (the Quran) has been revealed as a warning and a reminder to those who believe.  Follow, (and tell the people), what has been sent down and do not follow any other master apart from God alone.  How often have previous civilsations been destroyed? But still humankind does not heed the warnings.  Some were taken at night, others when they rested in the heat of the day.  When the punishment was upon them they admitted their wrongdoing. God will surely question those to whom a message was sent and those who carried the message.  Humankind will be questioned by God who has full knowledge of their deeds, both good and bad.  The weighing of the deeds on that Day will be just.  Those who scales are heavy (with good deeds) will be successful and those whose scales are light will be lost. Verses 11 – 18 The story of Adam and SatanGod established humankind in the earth and provided a means with which to make a livelihood.  Humankind is ungrateful yet it is God who created you, and shaped you into human form.  The angels were asked to prostrate before the first of your kind, Adam.  The angels obeyed; all except Iblis.[1]  Iblis (Satan) proceeded to argue with God, when asked why he did not obey God's instructions.  Satan considered himself better than the Adam.  He was created from smokeless fire whereas Adam was created from clay.God ordered Satan to descend from Paradise stating that it was not an abode for the arrogant and that Satan would henceforth be one of the contemptible ones.  Satan asked for a reprieve (from judgment and punishment) until the Day of Resurrection.  The reprieve was granted.   In his arrogance Satan told God he planned to deceive mankind, to lie in wait for them on the straight path and come at them from all sides.  You, Satan said to God, will find most of them ungrateful.   God ordered Satan out and swore to fill Hell with Satan and those who followed him.Verses 19 – 25 Acceptance of repentanceAdam and his wife were directed to live in Paradise and eat from wherever they will.  There was however one exception, the tree which God pointed out to them.  Satan whispered to Adam and Eve to make them aware of their nakedness, he also encouraged them to eat from the forbidden tree; saying to do so would make them immortal or angels.  Satan swore to be a sincere advisor to them.  After eating from the tree their nakedness became clear to them and Adam and Eve tried to gather leaves to cover themselves.  God questioned them as to why they disobeyed Him and did not take His warning to stay away from Satan.  Adam and Eve admitted their wrongdoing and asked for forgiveness.  Earth became their abode, where they would live, die and be raised back to life.Verses 26 – 32 A warningGod then addresses the children of Adam (humankind).  He explains that they have garments to cover their nakedness, and as an adornment, but the best garment of all is the garment of God-consciousness.  This is a sign He says.  Again they are warned that Satan is a sworn enemy so be not deceived.  The evil ones are allied to those who do not believe.  God did not order immorality, thus what your forefathers did is not an excuse.  God commanded righteousness, therefore direct your worship to Him alone and be devoted entirely to Him.  God created humankind and will repeat the process on the Day of Judgment.  Some are guided but some are doomed because they take the evil ones as their masters. God advises the children of Adam to dress well, when and wherever they pray, and to eat and drink from what He has provided.  However He warns them not to be extravagant for He does not love those who do so.  Prophet Muhammad is then advised to ask his followers as to who forbids them  from what God has provided.  They are for humankind to enjoy but will be for the believers alone on the Day of Resurrection.Verses 33 – 41 The closed gatesProphet Muhammad is advised to tell the believers that God forbids disgraceful deeds, those openly done as well as those hidden away.  Every nation's life span is set, it cannot be hastened nor can it be delayed for even an instant.  When the messengers come, those who believe will be saved but those who ignore the warnings will abide in the Fire.  The most unjust is the one who invents lies about God or denies the revelations.  They will live out their days, and the ones they used to invoke besides God will not help them; they will abide in the Fire.  They will curse and blame each other as they are herded into the Fire to face a double punishment.  The gates of Heaven will not be opened to those who deny the verses or are arrogant towards them.  Even if a rope was to be threaded through the eye of a needle they would not enter the Everlasting Garden.  This is the punishment for the guilty and the evildoers.Verses 42 – 58 A Day of Fulfilment (Judgment)Those who believe and do good deeds are the people of the Garden.  They will not be burdened with what they are unable to bear and the gates of Heaven will be open to them.  They will praise God because of the Paradise they have inherited and call out to the people of the Fire that the promise of God was true.  The people of the Fire reply that they too have found the promise to be true.  Next a caller will announce that the curse of God is upon the wrongdoers.  There will be a partition between both parties.  The people of the Heights will recognise each other and call out to each other.  The inmates from Hell then beg for food and water from the inmates of Paradise, but their answer is that God has forbidden them sustenance.  They will be forgotten just as they had forgotten the inevitability of this Day which is the fulfilment of what was promised in the Quran.The Lord God created the universe and then rose over the Throne in a manner that suits His Majesty, so call upon him with humility, and invoke Him with fear and hope.  He is the one who sends the wind and the rain bringing forth all kinds of fruit, likewise He will raise the dead.  Vegetation emerges by the permission of God.Verses 59 – 73 The stories of Noah and HudGod sent Noah to his people and he asked them to worship God alone.  They denied Noah so God saved him and those with him in a ship, the others, who denied God's signs, were drowned.  Prophet Hud was sent to the people of Aad, saying worship God alone but they denied him.  They called him a liar and a fool when he was giving them sincere advice.  Hud reminded them of the people of Noah and of the favours God has bestowed upon them, he warned them of a terrible punishment but they taunted him and asked Hud to bring on the punishment.  Hud said he would wait with them for the decision from God.  The disbelievers were annihilated; Hud and his companions were saved by the mercy of God.Verses 74- 94 The stories of Saleh, Lot and ShuaibThen, to the people of Thamud, God sent Prophet Saleh.  He asked them to worship God alone.  Saleh asked them to protect the she-camel sent from God and reminded them that they were the inheritors of Aad, capable of building great mansions in valleys and carving out homes from the sides of mountains.  Remember God's blessings Saleh told his people, however the arrogant ones asked the believers if they really thought Saleh was sent from God.  They answered yes but the arrogant ones rejected this and hamstrung the camel they had been charged with protecting.  So bring us this promise (of God's wrath) they said, so an earthquake seized them and they fell down dead.  Saleh turned away.Lot was sent to his people and confronted them with the promise of punishment for the indecent acts they performed with each other, but their only response was to try to evict Lot and his family from their city.  God saved Lot and all his family, except for his wife who was among the evildoers, when the rain of stones destroyed them.Shuaib was sent to the people of Midian and he asked them to worship God alone.  He asked them to cease their corrupt business practices and to stop waylaying visitors and wayfarers in their cities.  He reminded them that God increased their numbers and of the shocking ends to some previous nations but they did not want to heed the warning.  Instead of being grateful to God they attributed changing fortunes to the passage of time.  The people of Midian were stuck down by an earthquake, those who had disbelieved Shuaib's warning ceased to exist.  Shuaib turned away without grieving for the disbelieving people.Verses 95 – 100 A lesson to learnWhenever God sent a prophet to a town (or nation) he afflicted the people with adversity and misfortune in order that they might humble themselves before Him.  Then God changed their hardship to prosperity but the people did not recognise God's grace.  Had they believed they would have been showered with riches but they did not so they were seized for their misdeeds.   God asks, did those people feel secure at night, or in the day? The only people who feel secure from the plan of God are those doomed to destruction.  Do people not understand, from the stories of those before them, that God can afflict them for their sins and seal their hearts?Verses 101 – 126 God sends Moses to PharaohThe people in the cities in the previous verses were sent messengers with warnings but they refused to believe in them.  Then God sent Moses to Pharaoh and his priests but they too treated the message unjustly.  See then what happened to those who spread corruption.  Moses told Pharaoh that he (Moses) was a messenger from the Lord of all the worlds and Pharaoh asked for a sign.  Moses threw his staff to the ground and it tuned into a slithering serpent.  Then he pulled his hand out from under his robe and it was shining white and radiant.  The leaders around Pharaoh said that Moses was a sorcerer and suggested a competition.  Pharaoh's sorcerers arrived and were promised a place in the inner circle if they won.The sorcerers threw their sticks and they turned into snakes.  God inspired Moses and he threw down his staff that turned into a snake that devoured all the snakes the sorcerers had conjured.  The sorcerers were defeated; the truth was clear so they fell to their knees saying that they believe in the Lord of the worlds, the Lord of Moses.  Pharaoh declared that he would cut off their hands and feet on opposite sides and crucify them all because they believed before he (Pharaoh) had given his permission for them to do so.  They cried out to God asking Him to keep them steadfast and let them die devoted to Him alone.Verses 127 – 137 Plagues afflict EgyptThe leaders amongst Pharaoh's people asked if he intended to let Moses and his people cause corruption in the land.  He answered that he would put their sons to death and spare their daughters.  Moses advised his people to be steadfast and turn to God for help.  Moses' people complained that they were used to persecution before and are still being persecuted, but Moses gives them hope. Pharaoh's people were afflicted with several years of famine in the hope that they would come to their senses but they thought good provision their right and bad circumstances were due to Moses (an evil omen).  Their fortune however was in the hands of God but still they did not recognise it.Next the people of Pharaoh were inflicted with a flood, followed by plagues of locusts, and lice, and frogs, and blood.  Pharaoh's people asked Moses to intervene with his Lord and have Him remove the punishment, saying that if he did so they would let the enslaved people of Israel go.  However when the punishment was removed they broke their promise.  God drowned them and caused those who had been oppressed to inherit the land.Verses 138 – 143 God rescues the Children of Israel and talks to MosesGod took the Children of Israel across the sea where they came across people who worshipped idols.  The children of Israel asked Moses to make them an idol to which he replied that they were an ignorant people.  He told them the cult the idol worshippers were following was doomed to destruction.  God summoned Moses on the mountain for forty nights.  He asked his brother Aaron, who had been with him from the beginning, to take his place to lead the people and being careful to keep them away from the idol worshippers.  Moses arrived at the appointed time and asked God to show Himself.  God answered, you will not see Me, but look at the mountain, if it can look at me and remain in place you will see me.  The mountain crumbled before Moses' eyes and he fell down unconscious.  When he recovered he said to God, ‘Glory be to You! To You I turn in repentance! I am the first to believe!'Verses 144 – 147God told Moses that he was chosen, from amongst all of humankind, to be the one who could hear God and receive His message, thus he should be grateful for such an honour.   God inscribed all details and instructions on the tablets, saying hold firmly to them.  Those who deny the signs of God will be kept distracted.  The deeds of those who deny the signs and the meeting in the Hereafter will become worthless.Verses 148 – 156 The wrath of GodWhile Moses was gone the people began worshipping a shape like a calf made from their jewellery and ornaments but they perceived that they were doing wrong and when Moses returned they said if God does not forgive us we will be among the losers.  Moses was angry and upset with them but especially his brother Aaron.  He threw down the tablets, seized his brother by the hair and pulled towards him.  Aaron said, "Oh son of my mother, (reminding Moses of their kinship) they would have overpowered me and killed me".  Moses asked God to forgive both his brother and himself.Those who worshipped the calf would gain the anger of their Lord but those who realised their misdeeds and repented would be forgiven.  When Moses had calmed down he picked up the tablets on which were inscribed guidance and mercy for those who feared their Lord.  Moses chose 70 men from among their number and they came towards Moses fearful and shaking.  They were supposed to apologise and beg forgiveness for worshipping the calf but instead they demanded to see God.  The mountain convulsed in a massive earthquake and they fell down dead.  Moses prayed for forgiveness and God's mercy encompasses all things.  Mercy is for those who are God conscious, pay the prescribed alms and believe in the revelations.Verses 157 – 158 Mohammad in the Torah and GospelSpecial mercy will be assigned to those who follow the unlettered Prophet who they will find mentioned in the Torah and the Gospel.  He enjoins them to good and forbids them from evil.  He makes good things lawful and bad things unlawful.  He relieves them of their burdens.  Those who follow him will succeed.   God says to Prophet Muhammad, may the mercy and blessings of God be upon him, to declare to the people that he is the Messenger of God sent by the one who controls the heavens and the earth and that there is no true deity worthy of worship except God.Verses 159 – 168 The Children of Israel are testedIn the nation of Moses there were some who were guided and thereby established justice.  God divided them into twelve tribes.  When the thirsty people asked for water God revealed to Moses where to strike the rock with his staff.  Twelve springs gushed forth and each tribe had its own drinking place.  God sent down mana (pure things) from heaven for them to eat.  They rebelled, but they did not harm God by their rebellion; they harmed only themselves.God said to them, reside in this town, eat whatever you please, ask for forgiveness and enter the gate with humility.  God would then forgive their sins and multiply the reward of the good-doers but there were wicked amongst them who changed the wording of God's commandment.  So God sent down upon them a scourge from heaven.  God tells Prophet Muhammad to ask them about the town by the sea and what happened when they transgressed the laws of the Sabbath.  They were tested because of their disobedience.  On the Sabbath the fish came easily but did not appear on other days.  Ask them also, God said, about the warners and why they preached to a people who surely would be destroyed or punished by God.  The warners said they wanted to discharge their duty to God and they hoped some would take admonition.  However they disregarded the warning, continued with their behaviour and God said to them "Be thee detested apes".Remind them also that God said he would raise against them those who would inflict them with grievous harm right up until the Day of Resurrection.  God broke their unity as a nation and dispersed them all over the world.  Some are righteous and others are not, they were tested with both blessings and misfortunes.Verses 169 – 180 Including the covenant with the descendants of Adam.Then they were succeeded by an evil generation.  They enjoyed a low life thinking everything would be forgiven.  Why do they not see that the Hereafter is better? Those who follow the Book and establish the prayer will never have their deeds go to waste.  And mention to them the mountain that was suspended over them as if it were an umbrella.  They thought it was going to fall on them but God said hold fast to what we have given to you and remember so that you will return to God consciousness.Remind them Oh Prophet about the time when God brought into existence every single descendant of Adam (every human) and made them testify asking, "Am I not your Lord?" God did this, in case on the Day of Resurrection, anyone said, "but we were not aware".  Or in case they should try to blame their ancestors for idolatry or ascribing partners to God, saying we just followed our forefathers.  Everything is made clear.Tell them also the story of the man in the time of Moses to whom we gave our stories but he chose to ignore them and Satan pursued him until he became one of the deviators.  He would have been exalted through the revelations but he clung to his earthly life.  He was like a dog; if you chase him he pants, if you leave him he still pants.  Tell them the stories that they may reflect, whomever God guides is truly guided, whoever he forsakes is a loser.God says He created Hell for those of the jinn and humankind who have hearts but do not understand, eyes but do not see and ears but do not hear.  They are worse than animals because they are heedless.  And to God belong the best names, so invoke Him by them.  And leave the company of those who use them improperly.Verses 181 – 188God created a community (the followers of Prophet Muhammad) who guide to the truth and establish justice.  Those who deny God's revelations are drawn step by step towards destruction.  Their companion (Prophet Muhammad) is not mad, but he is a warner.  What could they believe in if they do not believe in this? Whoever God leads astray cannot be guided, He leaves them wandering blindly.  When they ask (you, Prophet Muhammad) about the Hour say, "Its knowledge is only with my Lord.  None will reveal its time except Him.  It lays heavily upon the heavens and the earth.  It will not come upon you except unexpectedly." Prophet Muhammad is told to tell the people he has no power to benefit or avert harm from himself and that he is nothing more than a warner and bearer of good news for those who believe.Verses 189 – 206  God created everything – worship HimIt is God who created everyone from one soul (Adam).  The people are ungrateful and set up partners with God but He is far exalted above the partners they ascribe to Him.  God says to Prophet Muhammad, say that your protector is God who sent the Quran and protects the righteous.  Be tolerant and say what is right, if Satan should tempt you seek protection with God.  When those who fear God are tempted by Satan they only need to remember God and they will know the right course of action.Tell them Muhammad that you follow only what is revealed from God; the Book (Quran) is a guidance and a blessing.  When you hear it recited, be silent and listen.  Remember God with humility and reverence in the morning and in the evening.  Do not be heedless; those who are close to God are never too proud to worship Him.  Glorify Him and bow down before Him._______________________________________By Aisha Stacey (© 2015, 2018 IslamReligion.com)Copyright © 2006 - 2021 IslamReligion.com. The history of the Prophet Hud is referred to in this chapter.  While the last chapter dealt mostly with abstract questions related to the truth of revelation, this chapter illustrates the truth of those questions by referring to the histories of former prophets.  Thus, it deals with the histories of Noah, Hud, Salih, Abraham, Lot and Shu'ayb (peace be upon them all).  A cruel and persecuting enemy is warned of the fate that befell previous people.  This chapter was revealed in Mecca during the last four years of the Prophet's life and consists of 123 verses.Once Abu Bakr said to Prophet Muhammad, may the mercy and blessings of God be upon him, "Of late I have been noticing that you are getting older.  What is the cause of it?" Prophet Muhammad replied that Surah Hud and similar chapters (56-Waqi'ah, 77-Mursalat, 78-Naba', and 99-Takwir) hastened old age on him (Tirmidhi).An attentive reading of this chapter will make you feel the effect of its stern warnings.  God warns us through the different stories of the prophets, where those who put their faith in the outward appearance of the worldly life and rejected the message of the prophets were met with dire consequences.  When God passes His judgment on people, He does not spare anyone, even the closest relative of a prophet.  Only the prophet and his followers are saved.Verses 1-7 Message of GodThese verses discuss the Quran and the attitude of the polytheists towards it and resurrection.The verses of the Quran have been explained clearly.  The message of the Quran is to worship God and seek forgiveness from Him.  Prophet Muhammad warns of God's punishment and at the same time he brings good news of Paradise.  God will judge mankind according to the deeds they did in this life.  Some people try to hide from God, but God knows their innermost secrets.God is responsible for sustaining every living creature.  God created the heavens and the earth in six days to test man if he realizes God's power and is thankful to Him.  Those who deny resurrection consider the Quran to be magic because of its convincing power.Verses 8-11 Polar attitude towards God's favorsThe verses compare the attitude of the believers and the polytheists towards favors and hardships.Do not be deceived by God's postponement of punishment as it can come at any time.  Also, do not lose hope and become ungrateful if God withdraws some of His favors.  At the same time, do not become arrogant if God makes you taste His bounty.  People have this attitude, except the patient ones who do good deeds.  They will be forgiven and have an immense reward.Verse 12 Prophet Muhammad's dealing with pagansThe verse describes Prophet's feeling of discomfort because of the behavior of the polytheists.Verses 13-14 Authenticity of the QuranThe authenticity of the Quran is proven to those who claim Prophet Muhammad fabricated it.  God challenges the experts of the Arabic language to bring ten chapters similar to it.  Their inability to respond should make you certain that the Quran is from God, there is no deity worthy of worship except Him, and you should submit to Him as Muslims.Verses 15-16 Future consequences of present behaviorThe consequence for those desiring solely the reward of this world is that they will receive their wages in this life, but Fire will be their lot in the life to come.  After all, they worked only for worldly objectives.Verses 17-24 The two partiesArchangel Gabriel, God's witness, confirms the Quran.  A person who follows the Quran and Moses' book (i.e.  Torah which foretold the coming of Prophet Muhammad) believes in it.  The Fire is for those who reject it.  Cursed are those losers who attribute lies to God, prevent others from God's path – Islam – and reject life after death.Those who have faith and do good deeds will reside in Paradise.Verses 25-49 Story of NoahThe people of Noah lived in southern Iraq, not too far from present day city of Kufah.  Noah's message to his people was:·       Worship God.·       Fear the punishment of a painful Day.But the leaders of his nation considered him to be a mere human followed by people of low status.  They rejected his answers and invited him to bring on the destruction he promised.  God instructed Noah to patiently bear their mockery and build the ark. Tenderness of a father could not save Noah's disbelieving son from drowning with the rest.  The ark, carrying Noah, fellow believers, and animals landed on Judi, which is said to be a  mountain facing Ibn Umar Island at the junction of the Syrian and Turkish borders, on the eastern bank of the Tigris River, visible from the Syrian town of Ain Diwar.Verses 50-60 Story of HudThe people of ‘Ad, to whom Hud was sent, lived in an area of curved sand hills in the southern part of the Arabian peninsula.  They worshiped a number of idols: wudd, suwa, yaguth, ya'uq, and nasr.Summary of Hud's message to his people:·       Worship God.·       I don't ask you for any reward for my preaching, it is with my Creator.·       Seek forgiveness from God, He will send rain and give you strength.·       I rely on God, my Lord and your Lord.·       God has full control of every creature.·       My Lord can substitute you with better people if you turn away.·       You won't harm God by not worshipping Him.The people rejected his message.  God's punishment which lasted for 8 days and 7 nights destroyed them for rejecting God and disobeying His prophets.  Hud and fellow believers were saved by God's mercy.Verses 61-68 Story of SalihThe dwelling places of Salih's people, Thamud, are situated somewhere between Hijaz and Syria in the southeastern part of Madyan which is situated east of the Gulf of Aqaba.  Chiseled out of stone, their dwellings are still preserved.Salih's message was similar to that of Noah and Hud.  In addition, he produced a female camel from the neighboring hills to prove that he was God's true prophet but warned people not to harm it.  Nevertheless, they killed it, thereby inviting God's wrath in the form of a heavenly scream that left them dead, face down in their homes. Verses 69-76 Story of AbrahamBorn in Iraq, Abraham settled in the city of Ur.  He traveled to Harran in the north of the Arabian Peninsula and then to Palestine with his wife, Sarah, and his nephew, Lot.  Due to a drought, he then moved to Egypt.  Lot returned with Abraham from Egypt, but parted ways because the land was not enough for both their herds.  Lot settled towards the Dead Sea near Sodom and Gomorrah.Abraham had three beautiful character traits: forbearing, repentant, and soft-hearted. He was quick to serve unannounced guests - angels of God - who brought two bits of news.  One, destruction was forthcoming to the people of Lot.  As for the second, the birth of Abraham's son, Isaac, from Sarah, his aged wife, and his grandson, Jacob.  Abraham makes a futile attempt to turn away the angels from Lot. Verses 77-83 Story of LotAs hospitable as his uncle, Lot is distressed to see young, attractive guests who people immediately wanted to sodomize.  Lot tries to reason with the people by pointing to available women for marriage and not to disgrace him.  Feeling powerless to protect his guests, the angels comfort Lot that he will be unharmed.  He was to leave town at nightfall with his family except his wife who would stay behind as she had informed people of the angelic guests.  God destroys them by lifting up the city, throwing it upside down, and raining them with stones due to their wickedness.Verses 84-95 Story of Shu'aybHe was sent to the people of Madyan who lived in the land of Hijaz, next to Syria and east of the Gulf of Aqaba.  According to some historians, that land is the site of the modern Saudi city of Tabuk.Shu'ayb's message:·       Worship God.·       Give full measure, do not give people less than what they pay for.·       Do not spread corruption on earth.·       Seek forgiveness from the Most Merciful, Most Loving Lord.·       Fear the punishment of a Day that will surround all.The disbelievers made fun of Prophet Shu'ayb's prayer, saying does it instruct him that they should leave ancestral gods or change how they dispose of their money. Shu'ayb reminds them that he only wishes reformation and God is his strength on Whom he relies.  His compassionate pleading to look at the ruins of Noah, Hud, Salih, and Lot does not convince them.  Shu'ayb and fellow believers are rescued when a scream destroys them as if they never existed.Verses 96-99 Story of MosesMoses left Egypt, and traveling through Sinai, he headed towards Madyan.  On his way he met his wife, the daughter of Shu'ayb.  On their return journey, God spoke to Moses at Mt. Tur (Mt. Horeb in Sinai) and thereafter, Moses returns to Egypt.God sent Moses with clear proofs to Pharaoh and his ministers, but the latter followed the misguided orders of their ruler instead.  Cursed in both worlds, just as they followed him in the cold water that drowned them, they will follow him into the Fire.Verses 100-102 InjusticeThey wronged themselves, God did not wrong them.  The gods they called upon besides God were of no use to them.Verses 103-109 Scenes from the Day of Resurrection and divine solace to the ProphetThe above narratives of the prophets are ‘signs' related to Prophet Muhammad for the benefit of those who fear the punishment of the afterlife. God will gather all the people on the Last Day, no one will be able to hide himself, and everyone will receive their full share.  On that Day a soul will speak only by God's permission.  The unfortunate ones will enter the Hellfire on that Day for eternity.  The fortunate ones will be in Paradise forever.Verses 110-111 Warning against casting doubt in the books of GodPeople treat their prophets the same.  Some accept their call, and others reject it.  Casting doubt, people denied Moses and the Torah like the pagans of Mecca denied Prophet Muhammad.  Those who rejected the prophets shall face the same fate.Verses 112-115 Means of achieving success in the world and the HereafterProphet Muhammad and the repentant believers with him are instructed by God to remain determined, establish regular prayer, and exercise patience.  Do not cross the boundaries and do not become partners with wrongdoers or else the Fire will touch you.Verses 116-119 God's way in destroying unjust nationsGod does not unjustly destroy cities while the residents are trying to reform.  Had God wanted, He could have made people follow a single religion, but He did not intend so for reasons known to Him.  Thus, people will continue to have differences except those upon whom the Lord has mercy: who follow the teachings of the prophets.  As for the rest, i.e. those who reject the message of God, He will punish them in Hell.Verse 120 The objectives of Quranic stories1.     Consoling Prophet Muhammad.2.     Sending truth to Prophet Muhammad.3.     Advice and a reminder to the believers.Verses 121-123 Practical benefits from the stories of messengers1.     God has absolute and complete knowledge of time and space - what is observable and what is hidden in the heavens and the earth and of the past and the present.2.     Everything returns to God in the life to come.  The creation cannot interfere in it.3.     Therefore, God must be worshipped and relied upon.4.     God knows our actions and our statements.  The good works of the obedient shall not go to waste and the rejection of the stubborn will not be forgotten._______________________________________By Imam Mufti (© 2015 IslamReligion.com)Copyright © 2006 - 2021 IslamReligion.com. This chapter is one of the longer chapters found at the beginning of the Quran.  It is generally accepted that it was revealed in Mecca.  It is named after the height of the barrier that will divide the saved and the damned on the Day of Judgement.  It begins by reassuring Prophet Muhammad, may the mercy and blessings of God be upon him, that the stories about disobedient communities of the past should serve as encouragement to the believers to take heed and repent before the great Day is upon them.Verses  1- 10 Take lessons from historyGod addresses Prophet Muhammad telling him not to feel any distress.  He (God) reassures him that this book (the Quran) has been revealed as a warning and a reminder to those who believe.  Follow, (and tell the people), what has been sent down and do not follow any other master apart from God alone.  How often have previous civilsations been destroyed? But still humankind does not heed the warnings.  Some were taken at night, others when they rested in the heat of the day.  When the punishment was upon them they admitted their wrongdoing. God will surely question those to whom a message was sent and those who carried the message.  Humankind will be questioned by God who has full knowledge of their deeds, both good and bad.  The weighing of the deeds on that Day will be just.  Those who scales are heavy (with good deeds) will be successful and those whose scales are light will be lost. Verses 11 – 18 The story of Adam and SatanGod established humankind in the earth and provided a means with which to make a livelihood.  Humankind is ungrateful yet it is God who created you, and shaped you into human form.  The angels were asked to prostrate before the first of your kind, Adam.  The angels obeyed; all except Iblis.[1]  Iblis (Satan) proceeded to argue with God, when asked why he did not obey God's instructions.  Satan considered himself better than the Adam.  He was created from smokeless fire whereas Adam was created from clay.God ordered Satan to descend from Paradise stating that it was not an abode for the arrogant and that Satan would henceforth be one of the contemptible ones.  Satan asked for a reprieve (from judgment and punishment) until the Day of Resurrection.  The reprieve was granted.   In his arrogance Satan told God he planned to deceive mankind, to lie in wait for them on the straight path and come at them from all sides.  You, Satan said to God, will find most of them ungrateful.   God ordered Satan out and swore to fill Hell with Satan and those who followed him.Verses 19 – 25 Acceptance of repentanceAdam and his wife were directed to live in Paradise and eat from wherever they will.  There was however one exception, the tree which God pointed out to them.  Satan whispered to Adam and Eve to make them aware of their nakedness, he also encouraged them to eat from the forbidden tree; saying to do so would make them immortal or angels.  Satan swore to be a sincere advisor to them.  After eating from the tree their nakedness became clear to them and Adam and Eve tried to gather leaves to cover themselves.  God questioned them as to why they disobeyed Him and did not take His warning to stay away from Satan.  Adam and Eve admitted their wrongdoing and asked for forgiveness.  Earth became their abode, where they would live, die and be raised back to life.Verses 26 – 32 A warningGod then addresses the children of Adam (humankind).  He explains that they have garments to cover their nakedness, and as an adornment, but the best garment of all is the garment of God-consciousness.  This is a sign He says.  Again they are warned that Satan is a sworn enemy so be not deceived.  The evil ones are allied to those who do not believe.  God did not order immorality, thus what your forefathers did is not an excuse.  God commanded righteousness, therefore direct your worship to Him alone and be devoted entirely to Him.  God created humankind and will repeat the process on the Day of Judgment.  Some are guided but some are doomed because they take the evil ones as their masters. God advises the children of Adam to dress well, when and wherever they pray, and to eat and drink from what He has provided.  However He warns them not to be extravagant for He does not love those who do so.  Prophet Muhammad is then advised to ask his followers as to who forbids them  from what God has provided.  They are for humankind to enjoy but will be for the believers alone on the Day of Resurrection.Verses 33 – 41 The closed gatesProphet Muhammad is advised to tell the believers that God forbids disgraceful deeds, those openly done as well as those hidden away.  Every nation's life span is set, it cannot be hastened nor can it be delayed for even an instant.  When the messengers come, those who believe will be saved but those who ignore the warnings will abide in the Fire.  The most unjust is the one who invents lies about God or denies the revelations.  They will live out their days, and the ones they used to invoke besides God will not help them; they will abide in the Fire.  They will curse and blame each other as they are herded into the Fire to face a double punishment.  The gates of Heaven will not be opened to those who deny the verses or are arrogant towards them.  Even if a rope was to be threaded through the eye of a needle they would not enter the Everlasting Garden.  This is the punishment for the guilty and the evildoers.Verses 42 – 58 A Day of Fulfilment (Judgment)Those who believe and do good deeds are the people of the Garden.  They will not be burdened with what they are unable to bear and the gates of Heaven will be open to them.  They will praise God because of the Paradise they have inherited and call out to the people of the Fire that the promise of God was true.  The people of the Fire reply that they too have found the promise to be true.  Next a caller will announce that the curse of God is upon the wrongdoers.  There will be a partition between both parties.  The people of the Heights will recognise each other and call out to each other.  The inmates from Hell then beg for food and water from the inmates of Paradise, but their answer is that God has forbidden them sustenance.  They will be forgotten just as they had forgotten the inevitability of this Day which is the fulfilment of what was promised in the Quran.The Lord God created the universe and then rose over the Throne in a manner that suits His Majesty, so call upon him with humility, and invoke Him with fear and hope.  He is the one who sends the wind and the rain bringing forth all kinds of fruit, likewise He will raise the dead.  Vegetation emerges by the permission of God.Verses 59 – 73 The stories of Noah and HudGod sent Noah to his people and he asked them to worship God alone.  They denied Noah so God saved him and those with him in a ship, the others, who denied God's signs, were drowned.  Prophet Hud was sent to the people of Aad, saying worship God alone but they denied him.  They called him a liar and a fool when he was giving them sincere advice.  Hud reminded them of the people of Noah and of the favours God has bestowed upon them, he warned them of a terrible punishment but they taunted him and asked Hud to bring on the punishment.  Hud said he would wait with them for the decision from God.  The disbelievers were annihilated; Hud and his companions were saved by the mercy of God.Verses 74- 94 The stories of Saleh, Lot and ShuaibThen, to the people of Thamud, God sent Prophet Saleh.  He asked them to worship God alone.  Saleh asked them to protect the she-camel sent from God and reminded them that they were the inheritors of Aad, capable of building great mansions in valleys and carving out homes from the sides of mountains.  Remember God's blessings Saleh told his people, however the arrogant ones asked the believers if they really thought Saleh was sent from God.  They answered yes but the arrogant ones rejected this and hamstrung the camel they had been charged with protecting.  So bring us this promise (of God's wrath) they said, so an earthquake seized them and they fell down dead.  Saleh turned away.Lot was sent to his people and confronted them with the promise of punishment for the indecent acts they performed with each other, but their only response was to try to evict Lot and his family from their city.  God saved Lot and all his family, except for his wife who was among the evildoers, when the rain of stones destroyed them.Shuaib was sent to the people of Midian and he asked them to worship God alone.  He asked them to cease their corrupt business practices and to stop waylaying visitors and wayfarers in their cities.  He reminded them that God increased their numbers and of the shocking ends to some previous nations but they did not want to heed the warning.  Instead of being grateful to God they attributed changing fortunes to the passage of time.  The people of Midian were stuck down by an earthquake, those who had disbelieved Shuaib's warning ceased to exist.  Shuaib turned away without grieving for the disbelieving people.Verses 95 – 100 A lesson to learnWhenever God sent a prophet to a town (or nation) he afflicted the people with adversity and misfortune in order that they might humble themselves before Him.  Then God changed their hardship to prosperity but the people did not recognise God's grace.  Had they believed they would have been showered with riches but they did not so they were seized for their misdeeds.   God asks, did those people feel secure at night, or in the day? The only people who feel secure from the plan of God are those doomed to destruction.  Do people not understand, from the stories of those before them, that God can afflict them for their sins and seal their hearts?Verses 101 – 126 God sends Moses to PharaohThe people in the cities in the previous verses were sent messengers with warnings but they refused to believe in them.  Then God sent Moses to Pharaoh and his priests but they too treated the message unjustly.  See then what happened to those who spread corruption.  Moses told Pharaoh that he (Moses) was a messenger from the Lord of all the worlds and Pharaoh asked for a sign.  Moses threw his staff to the ground and it tuned into a slithering serpent.  Then he pulled his hand out from under his robe and it was shining white and radiant.  The leaders around Pharaoh said that Moses was a sorcerer and suggested a competition.  Pharaoh's sorcerers arrived and were promised a place in the inner circle if they won.The sorcerers threw their sticks and they turned into snakes.  God inspired Moses and he threw down his staff that turned into a snake that devoured all the snakes the sorcerers had conjured.  The sorcerers were defeated; the truth was clear so they fell to their knees saying that they believe in the Lord of the worlds, the Lord of Moses.  Pharaoh declared that he would cut off their hands and feet on opposite sides and crucify them all because they believed before he (Pharaoh) had given his permission for them to do so.  They cried out to God asking Him to keep them steadfast and let them die devoted to Him alone.Verses 127 – 137 Plagues afflict EgyptThe leaders amongst Pharaoh's people asked if he intended to let Moses and his people cause corruption in the land.  He answered that he would put their sons to death and spare their daughters.  Moses advised his people to be steadfast and turn to God for help.  Moses' people complained that they were used to persecution before and are still being persecuted, but Moses gives them hope. Pharaoh's people were afflicted with several years of famine in the hope that they would come to their senses but they thought good provision their right and bad circumstances were due to Moses (an evil omen).  Their fortune however was in the hands of God but still they did not recognise it.Next the people of Pharaoh were inflicted with a flood, followed by plagues of locusts, and lice, and frogs, and blood.  Pharaoh's people asked Moses to intervene with his Lord and have Him remove the punishment, saying that if he did so they would let the enslaved people of Israel go.  However when the punishment was removed they broke their promise.  God drowned them and caused those who had been oppressed to inherit the land.Verses 138 – 143 God rescues the Children of Israel and talks to MosesGod took the Children of Israel across the sea where they came across people who worshipped idols.  The children of Israel asked Moses to make them an idol to which he replied that they were an ignorant people.  He told them the cult the idol worshippers were following was doomed to destruction.  God summoned Moses on the mountain for forty nights.  He asked his brother Aaron, who had been with him from the beginning, to take his place to lead the people and being careful to keep them away from the idol worshippers.  Moses arrived at the appointed time and asked God to show Himself.  God answered, you will not see Me, but look at the mountain, if it can look at me and remain in place you will see me.  The mountain crumbled before Moses' eyes and he fell down unconscious.  When he recovered he said to God, ‘Glory be to You! To You I turn in repentance! I am the first to believe!'Verses 144 – 147God told Moses that he was chosen, from amongst all of humankind, to be the one who could hear God and receive His message, thus he should be grateful for such an honour.   God inscribed all details and instructions on the tablets, saying hold firmly to them.  Those who deny the signs of God will be kept distracted.  The deeds of those who deny the signs and the meeting in the Hereafter will become worthless.Verses 148 – 156 The wrath of GodWhile Moses was gone the people began worshipping a shape like a calf made from their jewellery and ornaments but they perceived that they were doing wrong and when Moses returned they said if God does not forgive us we will be among the losers.  Moses was angry and upset with them but especially his brother Aaron.  He threw down the tablets, seized his brother by the hair and pulled towards him.  Aaron said, "Oh son of my mother, (reminding Moses of their kinship) they would have overpowered me and killed me".  Moses asked God to forgive both his brother and himself.Those who worshipped the calf would gain the anger of their Lord but those who realised their misdeeds and repented would be forgiven.  When Moses had calmed down he picked up the tablets on which were inscribed guidance and mercy for those who feared their Lord.  Moses chose 70 men from among their number and they came towards Moses fearful and shaking.  They were supposed to apologise and beg forgiveness for worshipping the calf but instead they demanded to see God.  The mountain convulsed in a massive earthquake and they fell down dead.  Moses prayed for forgiveness and God's mercy encompasses all things.  Mercy is for those who are God conscious, pay the prescribed alms and believe in the revelations.Verses 157 – 158 Mohammad in the Torah and GospelSpecial mercy will be assigned to those who follow the unlettered Prophet who they will find mentioned in the Torah and the Gospel.  He enjoins them to good and forbids them from evil.  He makes good things lawful and bad things unlawful.  He relieves them of their burdens.  Those who follow him will succeed.   God says to Prophet Muhammad, may the mercy and blessings of God be upon him, to declare to the people that he is the Messenger of God sent by the one who controls the heavens and the earth and that there is no true deity worthy of worship except God.Verses 159 – 168 The Children of Israel are testedIn the nation of Moses there were some who were guided and thereby established justice.  God divided them into twelve tribes.  When the thirsty people asked for water God revealed to Moses where to strike the rock with his staff.  Twelve springs gushed forth and each tribe had its own drinking place.  God sent down mana (pure things) from heaven for them to eat.  They rebelled, but they did not harm God by their rebellion; they harmed only themselves.God said to them, reside in this town, eat whatever you please, ask for forgiveness and enter the gate with humility.  God would then forgive their sins and multiply the reward of the good-doers but there were wicked amongst them who changed the wording of God's commandment.  So God sent down upon them a scourge from heaven.  God tells Prophet Muhammad to ask them about the town by the sea and what happened when they transgressed the laws of the Sabbath.  They were tested because of their disobedience.  On the Sabbath the fish came easily but did not appear on other days.  Ask them also, God said, about the warners and why they preached to a people who surely would be destroyed or punished by God.  The warners said they wanted to discharge their duty to God and they hoped some would take admonition.  However they disregarded the warning, continued with their behaviour and God said to them "Be thee detested apes".Remind them also that God said he would raise against them those who would inflict them with grievous harm right up until the Day of Resurrection.  God broke their unity as a nation and dispersed them all over the world.  Some are righteous and others are not, they were tested with both blessings and misfortunes.Verses 169 – 180 Including the covenant with the descendants of Adam.Then they were succeeded by an evil generation.  They enjoyed a low life thinking everything would be forgiven.  Why do they not see that the Hereafter is better? Those who follow the Book and establish the prayer will never have their deeds go to waste.  And mention to them the mountain that was suspended over them as if it were an umbrella.  They thought it was going to fall on them but God said hold fast to what we have given to you and remember so that you will return to God consciousness.Remind them Oh Prophet about the time when God brought into existence every single descendant of Adam (every human) and made them testify asking, "Am I not your Lord?" God did this, in case on the Day of Resurrection, anyone said, "but we were not aware".  Or in case they should try to blame their ancestors for idolatry or ascribing partners to God, saying we just followed our forefathers.  Everything is made clear.Tell them also the story of the man in the time of Moses to whom we gave our stories but he chose to ignore them and Satan pursued him until he became one of the deviators.  He would have been exalted through the revelations but he clung to his earthly life.  He was like a dog; if you chase him he pants, if you leave him he still pants.  Tell them the stories that they may reflect, whomever God guides is truly guided, whoever he forsakes is a loser.God says He created Hell for those of the jinn and humankind who have hearts but do not understand, eyes but do not see and ears but do not hear.  They are worse than animals because they are heedless.  And to God belong the best names, so invoke Him by them.  And leave the company of those who use them improperly.Verses 181 – 188God created a community (the followers of Prophet Muhammad) who guide to the truth and establish justice.  Those who deny God's revelations are drawn step by step towards destruction.  Their companion (Prophet Muhammad) is not mad, but he is a warner.  What could they believe in if they do not believe in this? Whoever God leads astray cannot be guided, He leaves them wandering blindly.  When they ask (you, Prophet Muhammad) about the Hour say, "Its knowledge is only with my Lord.  None will reveal its time except Him.  It lays heavily upon the heavens and the earth.  It will not come upon you except unexpectedly." Prophet Muhammad is told to tell the people he has no power to benefit or avert harm from himself and that he is nothing more than a warner and bearer of good news for those who believe.Verses 189 – 206  God created everything – worship HimIt is God who created everyone from one soul (Adam).  The people are ungrateful and set up partners with God but He is far exalted above the partners they ascribe to Him.  God says to Prophet Muhammad, say that your protector is God who sent the Quran and protects the righteous.  Be tolerant and say what is right, if Satan should tempt you seek protection with God.  When those who fear God are tempted by Satan they only need to remember God and they will know the right course of action.Tell them Muhammad that you follow only what is revealed from God; the Book (Quran) is a guidance and a blessing.  When you hear it recited, be silent and listen.  Remember God with humility and reverence in the morning and in the evening.  Do not be heedless; those who are close to God are never too proud to worship Him.  Glorify Him and bow down before Him._______________________________________By Aisha Stacey (© 2015, 2018 IslamReligion.com)Copyright © 2006 - 2021 IslamReligion.com. The people of 'Ad lived many years in the windswept hills of an area between Yemen and Oman. They were physically well built and renowned for their craftsmanship especially in the construction of tall buildings with lofty towers. They were outstanding among all the nations in power and wealth, which, unfortunately, made them arrogant and boastful. Their political power was held in the hand of unjust rulers, against whom no one dared to raise a voice. They were not ignorant of the existence of Allah SWT (God), nor did they refuse to worship Him. What they did refuse was to worship Allah SWT alone. They worshipped other gods, also, including idols. This is one sin Allah SWT does not forgive. Allah SWT wanted to guide and discipline these people so He sent a prophet from among them. This prophet was Prophet Hud AS (Eber), a noble man who handled this task with great resoluteness and tolerance. “Say (O Muhammad), He is Allah, (the) One. Name This Surah has been named after Prophet Hud whose story has been related in vv. 50-60. Period of Revelation If we consider its theme deeply, we come to the conclusion that it was revealed during the same period as Surah Yunus and most probably followed it immediately. Subject The Surah deals with the same subject as Surah Yunus, that is, invitation to the Message, admonition and warning, with this difference that the warning is sterner. This is also supported by a Tradition: It is related that after its revelation, once Hadrat Abu Bakr said to the Holy Prophet, "Of late I have been noticing that you are growing older and older. What is the cause of it?" The Holy Prophet replied, "Surah Hud and the like Surahs have made me old." This shows that it was a very hard time for the Holy Prophet and these stern warnings added greatly to his anxieties that were caused by the persecution from the Quraish, who were doing their worst to crush down the Message of Islam. For it was obvious to the Holy Prophet that the last limit of the respite given by Allah was approaching nearer and nearer and he was afraid lest the term of the respite should expire and his people be seized by the torment. The invitation is this: Obey the Messenger of Allah; discard shirk, and worship Allah and Allah alone: establish the entire system of your life on the belief that you shall be called to account in the Hereafter. The admonition is this: Remember that those people who put their faith in the outward appearance of this worldly life and rejected the Message of the Prophets met with dire consequences. Therefore you should consider it seriously whether you should follow the same way that history has proved to be the path to ruin. The warning is this: You should not be deluded by the delay in the coming of the punishment: it is because of the respite that Allah has granted you by His grace so that you might mend your ways: if you do not make use of this opportunity, you shall be inflicted with an inevitable punishment that will destroy you all except the Believers. Instead of addressing the people directly, the Quran has used the stories of the people of Noah, Hud, Salih, Lot, Shu'aib and Moses to achieve the above mentioned objects. What is most prominent in their stories is that when Allah passes His judgment on the people, He does not spare anyone whatsoever, even if he be the nearest relative of the Prophet of the time. Only that one is rescued who had believed in the Prophet, and none else, not even his own son or wife. More than that: the Faith demands from each and every Believer that he should totally forget his relationships when that judgment comes and remember only the relationship of the Faith. For it is against the spirit of Islam to show any regard whatsoever for the relationships of blood and race. And the Muslims demonstrated these teachings practically in the Battle of Badr, four years after the revelation of this Surah.

Al-Aḥqāf "the sand dunes" or "the winding sand tracts" is the 46th chapter of the Qur'an with 35 verses . This is the seventh and last chapter starting with the letters ha-mim. The people of 'Ad lived many years in the windswept hills of an area between Yemen and Oman. They were physically well built and renowned for their craftsmanship especially in the construction of tall buildings with lofty towers. They were outstanding among all the nations in power and wealth, which, unfortunately, made them arrogant and boastful. Their political power was held in the hand of unjust rulers, against whom no one dared to raise a voice. They were not ignorant of the existence of Allah (God), nor did they refuse to worship Him. What they did refuse was to worship Allah alone. They worshipped other gods, also, including idols. This is one sin Allah does not forgive. Allah wanted to guide and discipline these people so He sent a prophet from among them. All of God's Prophets came with miracles (signs of God's existence) to prove God sent them. Islam defines a miracle as an extraordinary act or event that go against the laws of nature and can only come about through the direct intervention and will of God. Miracles are not magic, which by definition are only tricks or illusions. Acts of Magic are evil acts performed with the help of devils. Prophets can only achieve miracles. God instructed Noah to build an ark.   "And construct the ship under Our observation and Our inspiration and do not address Me concerning those who have wronged; indeed, they are [to be] drowned" (Quran 11:37)   As he was building the Ark, his people accuse him of being a madman for building a ship made of planks and nails on land, nowhere near any body of water. Soon, water started to gush from the Earth and fall from the sky; God instructed Noah to enter the Ark with the ones that believed in the Message. He also commanded Prophet Noah to take a male and female of every animal aboard. Then God caused a great flood where water gushed from every crack on the Earth, and rain fell from the skies like never before. Prophet Noah peace be upon him saw his son overwhelmed by the water, so he cried out to him, pleading him to board the Ark and to leave the non-believers to their fate. However, his son was thinking in terms of this worldly life and did not rely on the Trust and Word of God. He replied to his dad he would go to a mountain where the waves could not reach. Noah pleaded with his son saying:   "…There is no protector today from the decree of God, except for whom He gives mercy…" (Quran 11:43)   His son refused. God then stated:   "…O Earth, swallow your water, and O sky, withhold [your rain]." And the water subsided, and the matter was accomplished, and the ship came to rest on the [mountain of] Judiyy. And it was said, "Away with the wrongdoing people" (Quran 11:44)   Soon, his son was drowned. He was drowned with the disbelievers and Noah's wife, who also disbelieved. The flood had cleansed the Earth of idol worshippers and disbelievers. Not a single person who had disbelieved in God remained on the Earth. The ship remains intact upon Judi right until today. An archeological study found the 500-foot long boat-shaped formation atop Mount Judi. God left it as a sign for mankind.   Prophet Hud (Eber in English) peace be upon him was sent to an ancient tribe called Ad who is believed to have been positioned in an area of curved sand hills of Oman and Yemen. They worshiped idols as gods which they believed would provide them happiness and wealth and protect them from evil, harm, and all catastrophes. The people of Prophet Hud were very tall, strong, and well built. They were arrogant people who would boast and tyrannize people with their large size. According to the Quran, they would say:   "Who is greater than us in strength?" (Quran 41:15)   They were known to build lofty towers; thus, the area became known as the land of a thousand pillars since God blessed them with fertile soil and abundant agriculture, many children, an ample supply of livestock and easy access to water resources. They mistakenly understood the purpose of life was to accumulate wealth, prestige, and live in luxury. Prophet Hud would command them to fear God and be righteous. According to the Holy Koran, Prophet Hud peace be upon him would say to his people:   "…O my people, worship Allah; you have no deity other than Him. You are not but inventors [of falsehood]" (Quran 11:50) Their Prophet advised them to seek God's forgiveness for their heedlessness and arrogance and advised them that if they seek forgiveness, God will increase them in power, strength and wealth. According to the Quran, Prophet Hud would state:   "And O my people, ask forgiveness of your Lord and then repent to Him. He will send [rain from] the sky upon you in showers and increase you in strength [added] to your strength. And do not turn away, [being] criminals" (Quran 11:52)   However, they proudly saw themselves as the most powerful nation in existence. They rejected their Prophet's Message believing that after death their bodies would decay to dust and be swept away by the wind. With their hearts and minds filled with the accumulation of this world, they would say to their Prophet: 'Why did God chose you when you do not differ from the rest of us, you eat and drink like the rest of us.'   Prophet Hud's people proudly stated: 'Have you come to turn us away from our gods? Then bring upon us the calamity with which you threaten us if you are telling the truth!' Prophet Hud peace be upon him turned to God the Almighty and renounced his people. Soon after, the people of Hud suffered through a three-year famine and a drought which spread throughout the once green, fertile and abundant land. The people looked to the sky hoping to see signs of rain. One fateful day the weather changed. The burning heat changed to furious violent winds which God the Almighty imposed on them, for seven nights and eight days. The winds ripped apart their homes, possessions, clothing and even the skin on their bodies. The sands of their desert swallowed and buried their crops. Only Prophet Hud and his small band of believers were saved and are believed to have migrated to the Hadhramaut area of what is today known as Southern Yemen. God states:   "Have you not considered how your Lord dealt with 'Aad - [With] Iram - who had lofty pillars, The likes of whom had never been created in the land?" (Quran 89:6-8)   God also speaks in the Quran of a nation where he sent one of his Messengers named Saleh peace be upon him. He was sent to a tribe called 'Thamud.' While many of the Prophets mentioned in the Quran are Prophets shared with Christianity and Judaism, thus their stories are mentioned in the Bible, Muslims additionally believe in all the past Messengers and Prophets of God. Prophet Saleh's Message was like all the other Prophets; he warned his people to turn away from worshipping false gods and to follow the One God, Allah, who provided them all their substance. He advised them to thank their One True Creator and urged the rich to stop oppressing the poor and to end all mischief and evil in the land.   The people of Thamud gathered in the shadows of a high mountain where they demanded that Prophet Saleh peace be upon him to prove that the One God, he spoke of was truly Mighty and Strong. They asked him to perform a miracle; they challenged him to produce for them an incomparable she-camel out which must be ten months pregnant, tall and attractive which will emerge from the rock. Prophet Saleh asked them if a she-camel appeared would they then believe in his Message. They responded yes and prayed with Prophet Saleh for the miracle to emerge. By the power and will of God, a massive, pregnant she-camel emerged from the rocks at the bottom of the mountain. They saw a powerful, clear sign from their Lord. Several Prophet Salah’s people believed, yet most of them continued in their disbelief and stubbornness even though they witness a great miracle. The Quran states:   "And nothing has prevented Us from sending signs except that the former peoples denied them. And We gave Thamud the she-camel as a visible sign, but they wronged her. And We send not the signs except as a warning" (Quran 17:69)   The she-camel lived among people of Thamud. Later, the people began to complain that the camel drank too much water and frightened the other livestock. Prophet Saleh peace be upon him began to fear for the camel. He warned his people of great a suffering that would befall them if they harmed the she-camel.   "And O my people, this is the she-camel of Allah - [she is] to you a sign. So let her feed upon Allah's Earth and do not touch her with harm, or you will be taken by an impending punishment" (Quran 11:64)   A group of his people got together and plotted to kill the she-camel. When they approached her, they shot their arrow and pierced her with a sword. They cheered and congratulated each other while mocking and laughing at their Prophet. Then they challenged Prophet Saleh to have God punish them for it. Their Prophet warned them that a great punishment would be upon them within three days while hoping his people would realize their mistake and repent for their massive error. Prophet Saleh and the believers then departed together to Palestine to be saved from God's upcoming punishment. Soon, the sky was filled with lightning and thunder, and the Earth shook aggressively with a frightening earthquake or volcanic eruption. No one, including their idols, could save them.   The result of these nation's was destruction. According to the Quran, when punishment came to these sinners, their only last utterance was:   "…Indeed, we were wrongdoers!" (Quran 7:5)   In the end, they cried out for mercy, but it was too late:   "(When they approached their doom) they cried out (for deliverance), but the time for deliverance was already past" (Quran 38:3)   This brings us to an important point, why is there past nations that rejected, hid, denied, and buried the Message of their Prophets and Messengers? The Message that the Prophets came with went against everything these nations were brought up and raised to believe and went against the beliefs of their forefathers. These people had a strong attachment to the customs of their forefathers and were sensitive concerning the good name of their fathers. They took pride in following their footsteps whether right or wrong. They grew up worshipping idols then the Prophets came and told them they were wrong and only Allah Alone is worthy of worship without partners and sons. The polytheists (idol worshippers) felt the Prophets wanted to dethrone their gods and did not tolerate the Muslims' rejection of their gods and reacted with severe harassment and abuse. God states in the Quran:   “And when it is said to them, ‘Follow what Allah has revealed,’ they say, ‘Rather, we will follow that which we found our fathers doing.’ Even though their fathers understood nothing, nor were they guided? The example of those who disbelieve is like that of one who shouts at what hears nothing but calls and cries cattle or sheep - deaf, dumb and blind, so they do not understand" (Quran 2:170-171)   God shares a conversation between Prophet Abraham peace be upon him and the idol worshippers at his time which included his father:   "When he said to his father and his people, ‘What do you worship?’ They said, ‘We worship idols and remain to them devoted.’ He said, ‘Do they hear you when you supplicate? Or do they benefit you, or do they harm?’ They said, ‘But we found our fathers doing thus’   (Quran 26:70-74)   The disbelievers of some nations rejected their Prophet because they were mere mortals who ate, drank, and walked the markets like everyone else. Adultery, liquor, gambling, violence, stealing, dishonesty, murder and many illicit practices were widespread among them. These were all condemned by Islam, and embracing Islam meant leaving all of them and adopting a new mode of life, and many were unwilling to change their wicked old habits. In addition, there was the desire for worldly things which had become so predominant in them, they soon became slaves to their desires, that nothing could move them from this, not even the command of God the Almighty. Islam came down to free people from being slaves to their desires and constant needs for material goods that could never make one permanently happy.   A certain number of these nations contained proud and arrogant people that considered no one else his or her equal. Slaves were mainly looked down upon and were wrongfully treated. Soon after, Islam came down and sought to stop the pride and racism and to establish a universal brotherhood. Islam taught people whether one is the slave or the master, they are both in the same level, and the best amongst them were only the ones with the most piety, righteousness, fear and God consciousness. This angered many of the tribe's chieftains.   God, the Almighty has mentioned the stories of perished nations and their wrongdoings in the Holy Quran to warn our nation from making the same mistakes they did. The repeating of the same mistakes they made can lead to the same outcome. Unfortunately, the current average Muslim hardly recites Quran with deep reflection, pondering over its profound Verses and Signs. By comparing the past nations to our nation, one would conclude that our nation is in danger. People today do the same sinful deeds that were done in the past. We see the same errors happening now, that happened in the past, such as disobeying God's commandments and associating partners with Him, behaving arrogantly, wrongfully, and sinfully. All the nations of the past have been punished through natural disasters. God has given our nation warnings that if we repeat the same errors and sins the past nations did, we would be punished too.   "Then, has it not become clear to them how many generations We destroyed before them as they walk among their dwellings? Unquestionably, the party of Satan - they will be the losers" (Quran 58:19)   God sent Prophet Noah peace be upon him to his people where he preached for 950 years, calling people to worship one God and follow his commandments, but only a few people believed in him. His people denied, mocked him and stated that he is nothing special but another human being amongst them. Prophet Noah peace be upon him agreed he was only human, but he was sent from God the Glorious with a clear warning. After the denial. God instructed Noah to build an ark.   "And construct the ship under Our observation and Our inspiration and do not address Me concerning those who have wronged; indeed, they are [to be] drowned" (Quran 11:37)   As he was building the Ark, his people accuse him of being a madman for building a ship made of planks and nails on land, nowhere near any body of water. Soon, water started to gush from the Earth and fall from the sky; God instructed Noah to enter the Ark with the ones that believed in the Message. He also commanded Prophet Noah to take a male and female of every animal aboard. Then God caused a great flood where water gushed from every crack on the Earth, and rain fell from the skies like never before. Prophet Noah peace be upon him saw his son overwhelmed by the water, so he cried out to him, pleading him to board the Ark and to leave the non-believers to their fate. However, his son was thinking in terms of this worldly life and did not rely on the Trust and Word of God. He replied to his dad he would go to a mountain where the waves could not reach. Noah pleaded with his son saying:   "…There is no protector today from the decree of God, except for whom He gives mercy…" (Quran 11:43)   His son refused. God then stated:   "…O Earth, swallow your water, and O sky, withhold [your rain]." And the water subsided, and the matter was accomplished, and the ship came to rest on the [mountain of] Judiyy. And it was said, "Away with the wrongdoing people" (Quran 11:44)   Soon, his son was drowned. He was drowned with the disbelievers and Noah's wife, who also disbelieved. The flood had cleansed the Earth of idol worshippers and disbelievers. Not a single person who had disbelieved in God remained on the Earth. The ship remains intact upon Judi right until today. An archeological study found the 500-foot long boat-shaped formation atop Mount Judi. God left it as a sign for mankind.   Prophet Hud (Eber in English) peace be upon him was sent to an ancient tribe called Ad who is believed to have been positioned in an area of curved sand hills of Oman and Yemen. They worshiped idols as gods which they believed would provide them happiness and wealth and protect them from evil, harm, and all catastrophes. The people of Prophet Hud were very tall, strong, and well built. They were arrogant people who would boast and tyrannize people with their large size. According to the Quran, they would say:   "Who is greater than us in strength?" (Quran 41:15)   They were known to build lofty towers; thus, the area became known as the land of a thousand pillars since God blessed them with fertile soil and abundant agriculture, many children, an ample supply of livestock and easy access to water resources. They mistakenly understood the purpose of life was to accumulate wealth, prestige, and live in luxury. Prophet Hud would command them to fear God and be righteous. According to the Holy Koran, Prophet Hud peace be upon him would say to his people:   "…O my people, worship Allah; you have no deity other than Him. You are not but inventors [of falsehood]" (Quran 11:50) Their Prophet advised them to seek God's forgiveness for their heedlessness and arrogance and advised them that if they seek forgiveness, God will increase them in power, strength and wealth. According to the Quran, Prophet Hud would state:   "And O my people, ask forgiveness of your Lord and then repent to Him. He will send [rain from] the sky upon you in showers and increase you in strength [added] to your strength. And do not turn away, [being] criminals" (Quran 11:52)   However, they proudly saw themselves as the most powerful nation in existence. They rejected their Prophet's Message believing that after death their bodies would decay to dust and be swept away by the wind. With their hearts and minds filled with the accumulation of this world, they would say to their Prophet: 'Why did God chose you when you do not differ from the rest of us, you eat and drink like the rest of us.'   Prophet Hud's people proudly stated: 'Have you come to turn us away from our gods? Then bring upon us the calamity with which you threaten us if you are telling the truth!' Prophet Hud peace be upon him turned to God the Almighty and renounced his people. Soon after, the people of Hud suffered through a three-year famine and a drought which spread throughout the once green, fertile and abundant land. The people looked to the sky hoping to see signs of rain. One fateful day the weather changed. The burning heat changed to furious violent winds which God the Almighty imposed on them, for seven nights and eight days. The winds ripped apart their homes, possessions, clothing and even the skin on their bodies. The sands of their desert swallowed and buried their crops. Only Prophet Hud and his small band of believers were saved and are believed to have migrated to the Hadhramaut area of what is today known as Southern Yemen. God states:   "Have you not considered how your Lord dealt with 'Aad - [With] Iram - who had lofty pillars, The likes of whom had never been created in the land?" (Quran 89:6-8)   God also speaks in the Quran of a nation where he sent one of his Messengers named Saleh peace be upon him. He was sent to a tribe called 'Thamud.' While many of the Prophets mentioned in the Quran are Prophets shared with Christianity and Judaism, thus their stories are mentioned in the Bible, Muslims additionally believe in all the past Messengers and Prophets of God. Prophet Saleh is not mentioned in the Bible today.   Similar to the people of Hud, the people of Prophet Saleh were also people that cultivated rich, prosperous, vibrant, fertile land, led excessive wealthy lives, built grand buildings, and had become vain because of their wealth. Regretfully, with their extravagant lifestyles came the worship of many gods, oppressing of the poor and living of a life which went against their Lord's commandments.   Prophet Saleh was a pious, righteous man who held a position of leadership in their community, but his call to worship God alone angered many of his people. Prophet Saleh's Message was like all the other Prophets; he warned his people to turn away from worshipping false gods and to follow the One God, Allah, who provided them all their substance. He advised them to thank their One True Creator and urged the rich to stop oppressing the poor and to end all mischief and evil in the land.   The people of Thamud gathered in the shadows of a high mountain where they demanded that Prophet Saleh peace be upon him to prove that the One God, he spoke of was truly Mighty and Strong. They asked him to perform a miracle; they challenged him to produce for them an incomparable she-camel out which must be ten months pregnant, tall and attractive which will emerge from the rock. Prophet Saleh asked them if a she-camel appeared would they then believe in his Message. They responded yes and prayed with Prophet Saleh for the miracle to emerge. By the power and will of God, a massive, pregnant she-camel emerged from the rocks at the bottom of the mountain. They saw a powerful, clear sign from their Lord. Several Prophet Salah’s people believed, yet most of them continued in their disbelief and stubbornness even though they witness a great miracle. The Quran states:   "And nothing has prevented Us from sending signs except that the former peoples denied them. And We gave Thamud the she-camel as a visible sign, but they wronged her. And We send not the signs except as a warning" (Quran 17:69)   The she-camel lived among people of Thamud. Later, the people began to complain that the camel drank too much water and frightened the other livestock. Prophet Saleh peace be upon him began to fear for the camel. He warned his people of great a suffering that would befall them if they harmed the she-camel.   "And O my people, this is the she-camel of Allah - [she is] to you a sign. So let her feed upon Allah's Earth and do not touch her with harm, or you will be taken by an impending punishment" (Quran 11:64)   A group of his people got together and plotted to kill the she-camel. When they approached her, they shot their arrow and pierced her with a sword. They cheered and congratulated each other while mocking and laughing at their Prophet. Then they challenged Prophet Saleh to have God punish them for it. Their Prophet warned them that a great punishment would be upon them within three days while hoping his people would realize their mistake and repent for their massive error. Prophet Saleh and the believers then departed together to Palestine to be saved from God's upcoming punishment. Soon, the sky was filled with lightning and thunder, and the Earth shook aggressively with a frightening earthquake or volcanic eruption. No one, including their idols, could save them.   The result of these nation's was destruction. According to the Quran, when punishment came to these sinners, their only last utterance was:   "…Indeed, we were wrongdoers!" (Quran 7:5)   In the end, they cried out for mercy, but it was too late:   "(When they approached their doom) they cried out (for deliverance), but the time for deliverance was already past" (Quran 38:3)   This brings us to an important point, why is there past nations that rejected, hid, denied, and buried the Message of their Prophets and Messengers? There are several reasons for this. The Message that the Prophets came with went against everything these nations were brought up and raised to believe and went against the beliefs of their forefathers. These people had a strong attachment to the customs of their forefathers and were sensitive concerning the good name of their fathers. They took pride in following their footsteps whether right or wrong. They grew up worshipping idols then the Prophets came and told them they were wrong and only Allah Alone is worthy of worship without partners and sons. The polytheists (idol worshippers) felt the Prophets wanted to dethrone their gods and did not tolerate the Muslims' rejection of their gods and reacted with severe harassment and abuse. God states in the Quran:   “And when it is said to them, ‘Follow what Allah has revealed,’ they say, ‘Rather, we will follow that which we found our fathers doing.’ Even though their fathers understood nothing, nor were they guided? The example of those who disbelieve is like that of one who shouts at what hears nothing but calls and cries cattle or sheep - deaf, dumb and blind, so they do not understand" (Quran 2:170-171)   God shares a conversation between Prophet Abraham peace be upon him and the idol worshippers at his time which included his father:   "When he said to his father and his people, ‘What do you worship?’ They said, ‘We worship idols and remain to them devoted.’ He said, ‘Do they hear you when you supplicate? Or do they benefit you, or do they harm?’ They said, ‘But we found our fathers doing thus’   (Quran 26:70-74)   The disbelievers of some nations rejected their Prophet because they were mere mortals who ate, drank, and walked the markets like everyone else. To be convinced of their Prophethood they arrogantly wanted God to send an Angel down from Heaven to accompany him. Other unbelievers accused their Prophet of incorporating into his alleged Revelation myths, legends, and fables that were well known to the people of that time.  God states in His Book:   "Even when they come to you arguing with you, those who disbelieve say, "This is not but legends of the former peoples." (Quran 6:25)   Certain nations believed in many gods, and some of their cities were dedicated to these gods. They allowed people from all around to come and worship their idols. If Islam told them they were wrong, and that Allah is the Only One that should be worshiped, and all other gods are false, their city would decline in visitors and revenue. It would be the end of their political and economic domination. Greed, selfishness, money, and power got the best of them.   The Prophets came to nations with immense difficulties and conditions. This call to true Islam took the slumbering men by surprise. These people's customs and habits were sunk low. Adultery, liquor, gambling, violence, stealing, dishonesty, murder and many illicit practices were widespread among them. These were all condemned by Islam, and embracing Islam meant leaving all of them and adopting a new mode of life, and many were unwilling to change their wicked old habits. In addition, there was the desire for worldly things which had become so predominant in them, they soon became slaves to their desires, that nothing could move them from this, not even the command of God the Almighty. Islam came down to free people from being slaves to their desires and constant needs for material goods that could never make one permanently happy.   A certain number of these nations contained proud and arrogant people that considered no one else his or her equal. Slaves were mainly looked down upon and were wrongfully treated. Soon after, Islam came down and sought to stop the pride and racism and to establish a universal brotherhood. Islam taught people whether one is the slave or the master, they are both in the same level, and the best amongst them were only the ones with the most piety, righteousness, fear and God consciousness. This angered many of the tribe's chieftains.   God, the Almighty has mentioned the stories of perished nations and their wrongdoings in the Holy Quran to warn our nation from making the same mistakes they did. The repeating of the same mistakes they made can lead to the same outcome. Unfortunately, the current average Muslim hardly recites Quran with deep reflection, pondering over its profound Verses and Signs. By comparing the past nations to our nation, one would conclude that our nation is in danger. People today do the same sinful deeds that were done in the past. We see the same errors happening now, that happened in the past, such as disobeying God's commandments and associating partners with Him, behaving arrogantly, wrongfully, and sinfully. All the nations of the past have been punished through natural disasters. God has given our nation warnings that if we repeat the same errors and sins the past nations did, we would be punished too.   "Then, has it not become clear to them how many generations We destroyed before them as they walk among their dwellings? Indeed, in that are signs for those of intelligence"   (Quran 20:128)   God shares these stories in the Holy Koran to warn people about the punishment of nations that disobeyed their Creator, Allah states:   "Have they not traveled through the Earth and observed how was the end of those before them? They were greater than them in power, and they plowed the Earth and built it up more than they have built it up, and their messengers came to them with clear evidence. And Allah would not ever have wronged them, but they were wronging themselves"   (Quran 30:9)   God also states:   "And never would your Lord have destroyed the cities until He had sent to their mother a messenger reciting to them Our Verses. And We would not destroy the cities except while their people were wrongdoers" (Quran 28:59)   It's crucial to indicate God punishes nations when they disobey their messenger while their Prophet is present amongst them. This is because when the messenger invites people to worship the One God, often the rejecters and the deniers would mock the messengers, persecute them, attack them, and sometimes even kill them. They would also sarcastically ask the Messengers of Gods, 'if you were God's messenger, then ask God to send down a punishment to us right now.' They asked for their punishments to be hastened, so it's only fair they got punished.   In addition, God destroys people when they collectively insist on evil after several repeated warnings. Nations that refused to accept faced God's Wrath and were destroyed, while those who believed in God's Messengers attained the means to everlasting success and salvation. So, read the Holy Quran and take lessons from the stories of the past nations. Reminisce of the nations who reached the pinnacle of civilization, amassing great wealth and power and prestige, only to be ungrateful and forget themselves and their Lord. They became corrupt, arrogant, cruel and oppressive, as they lived ungrateful lives and turned to falsehoods and false gods. God sent to them His Prophets, supported by miracles and revelation, to remind them of His Favors and remind them to be compassionate amongst themselves and His creation at large. But they disbelieved in God the Almighty, despite His Clear Signs and warnings.   Some ruins of past civilians, cities, and nations can still be seen as a reminder today, proof, and a sign to mankind. God is the most Merciful and the Most-Forgiving. He loves to Forgive. However, God is also All-Just, and His warnings should not be ignored, rejected or denied because God's punishment can be rapid and severe.

Name This Surah has been named after Prophet Hud whose story has been related in vv. 50-60. Period of Revelation If we consider its theme deeply, we come to the conclusion that it was revealed during the same period as Surah Yunus and most probably followed it immediately. Subject The Surah deals with the same subject as Surah Yunus, that is, invitation to the Message, admonition and warning, with this difference that the warning is sterner. This is also supported by a Tradition: It is related that after its revelation, once Hadrat Abu Bakr said to the Holy Prophet, "Of late I have been noticing that you are growing older and older. What is the cause of it?" The Holy Prophet replied, "Surah Hud and the like Surahs have made me old." This shows that it was a very hard time for the Holy Prophet and these stern warnings added greatly to his anxieties that were caused by the persecution from the Quraish, who were doing their worst to crush down the Message of Islam. For it was obvious to the Holy Prophet that the last limit of the respite given by Allah was approaching nearer and nearer and he was afraid lest the term of the respite should expire and his people be seized by the torment. The invitation is this: Obey the Messenger of Allah; discard shirk, and worship Allah and Allah alone: establish the entire system of your life on the belief that you shall be called to account in the Hereafter. The admonition is this: Remember that those people who put their faith in the outward appearance of this worldly life and rejected the Message of the Prophets met with dire consequences. Therefore you should consider it seriously whether you should follow the same way that history has proved to be the path to ruin. The warning is this: You should not be deluded by the delay in the coming of the punishment: it is because of the respite that Allah has granted you by His grace so that you might mend your ways: if you do not make use of this opportunity, you shall be inflicted with an inevitable punishment that will destroy you all except the Believers. Instead of addressing the people directly, the Quran has used the stories of the people of Noah, Hud, Salih, Lot, Shu'aib and Moses to achieve the above mentioned objects. What is most prominent in their stories is that when Allah passes His judgment on the people, He does not spare anyone whatsoever, even if he be the nearest relative of the Prophet of the time. Only that one is rescued who had believed in the Prophet, and none else, not even his own son or wife. More than that: the Faith demands from each and every Believer that he should totally forget his relationships when that judgment comes and remember only the relationship of the Faith. For it is against the spirit of Islam to show any regard whatsoever for the relationships of blood and race. And the Muslims demonstrated these teachings practically in the Battle of Badr, four years after the revelation of this Surah.
