Comedian Giulio Gallarotti joins the show for a fast, funny, and unexpectedly heartfelt conversation. He talks with Jonathan about his unconventional path into comedy—including the surreal experience of performing original characters for Alec Baldwin at a private lunch—as well as the origin and evolution of OOPS The Podcast. Giulio shares what it was like to build the show with Francis Ellis, then keep it alive after Francis left, including one hilarious attempt to retain a sponsor by cold-visiting their office, then being gaslit. Later, he gives Jonathan advice on how to get out of singing (solo and a capella) at an office holiday party, then they wrap it up with a spirited draft of ‘90s one-hit wonders. Giulio thinks the lyrics to Mmmbop! are perfectly understandable, while Jonathan thinks they sound like utter gibberish...who's right?? This is my 7th episode with radio show host, Ben Louis—one every year, since 2018. For listeners who don't know about Ben Louis, he started his career in radio right here at Radio Free Brooklyn in 2018 and found his calling. It was exciting for me, Dr. Lisa, to see someone like Ben with all the talent, hard work, drive and ambition to pursue his dream and he's been taking me along for the ride. This year, specifically the last few months have been pivotal for Ben. He got a promotion, raise and HIS OWN SIRIUSXM SHOW, Sundays 5pm + midnight on channel 47, Sunday Mimosa, which has about 3 million listeners. Getting this show puts Ben squarely in an industry position as a taste-maker in R+B music. He is sent to festivals, he's interviewed Patti Labelle, but he's the same old guy, just a little more grown. Ben has truly realized some goals and is now in the position of maximizing his opportunities, so no time to sleep. As always Ben is growing and inspiring. At this point, it seems his mission is bigger than him. Donald Trump has managed to avoid being held accountable and/or paying any real consequences for his actions his entire life. Whether bullying his classmates at military school, stiffing contractors, lawyers and anyone else who has ever worked for him, sexually assaulting women, defrauding investors, refusing to rent apartments to African Americans, evading taxes or calling for 5 black teenagers to be put to death for a crime they were eventually exonerated and found NOT to have committed—he's never been arrested, never spent a day in jail, never so much as apologized. Not once.  In 2020, it looked like that might finally change. Despite living 74 years with impunity, illegally conspiring to overturn the 2020 election, both federally and at the state level, stealing and mishandling highly classified documents, and then obstructing the FBI's efforts to retrieve them was finally going to be the straw that broke the camel's back. Trump's only hope for continuing to live life without ever answering for his misdeeds would be if the Supreme Court somehow stepped in to help him—which was never going to happen. Until it did.  Catch new episodes of The Next Best Thing LIVE, every Monday night at 10:00 Eastern on Radio Free Brooklyn! Right after the 2019 season, when KC made it to the Super Bowl for the first time in 50 years, the news was all about the upstart Chiefs, and a feel-good story about how a franchise that had been so snake-bitten for so long was FINALLY getting their chance in the sun. A mere 5 years later, everyone outside of Chiefs Kingdom seems to have turned on us. In this episode, Jonathan explains how many decades of utter misery Chiefs fans had to endure to get to this point, and why everyone else should just shut up and enjoy watching something they'll almost certainly tell their kids about one day. Also in this episode, Jonathan delves into a recent news story about a 9-year old Chiefs fan who dressed up for game, showing his abundance of spirit, and got accused of doing BLACK FACE. Hear why that, and the complaints about the team name are so utterly misguided. Catch new episodes of The Next Best Thing LIVE, every Monday night at 10:00 Eastern on Radio Free Brooklyn! Such an honor and privilege to have 1/3 of one of the best improv teams in the city, Branded Silk (@brandedsilk), on #NoSuggestionPod, actress, singer, producer, and improv comedian, Onyi Okoli (@onyiokoli)! Jake Joseph (@f00lish_b0y) and I had such a wonderful time with Onyi at Radio Free Brooklyn studios chatting about being a raw vegan, forbidden stories of being a property manager, how being a comedian and having a day job affects your circadian rhythm, the culture shock of moving from predominately black Baltimore to go to USC for theater and how that led Onyi to produce and direct shows for black students while there, growing up with a Nigerian dad and an African American mom, and more! We also got some wildly ridiculous improv scenes this week, including a scene about an unassuming parking lot attendant trying to validate the parking of a very sexually charged pair on a first date. I laughed so hard recording this episode, ya'll! So grateful to finally get Onyi on the show. I've been trying to get her to come on for more than a year, but she's so sought after as a performer and a teacher at Brooklyn Comedy Collective (@comedybrooklyn). Thrilled to start 2024 with this episode! This week's guests are actor, teacher, philosopher, cannabis advocate, and comedian Shawn Wickens (@timetravelingstoned), back for the third time, and explorer and musician Zarif (@spaceroyz). Co-host Aston Hollins (@astonhollins) and I had such a deeply enjoyable hang at Radio Free Brooklyn studios with these two na'er do-wells. The four of us talked about Interstellar vs The Martian, the lazy bohemian lifestyle, Jane Goodall, Jamiroquai vs Aphex Twin, Zarif describes his style of music which he calls "Ocean music", Shawn gives his definition of jazz, Aston shares about her end of the year blues, and we all sing Prince's Seven together. As if all these good natured hijinks weren't enough, we still managed to get into plenty super silly improv scenes including a scene about a very relaxed and laidback crew of space explorers. This episode really delighted me, and I'm so thankful it's our first episode of the year. Shawn and I have known each other nearly a decade and we have worked a lot with Zarif, I couldn't have thought of a better set of guests to kick the year off with. Thank you to all of you who listen to the podcast and enjoy it. Starting off on this note I feel excited about what this year will bring about for the podcast. I appreciate you being on this journey with us. Enjoy this episode!
